Discuss and predict
Why do Chinese people buy “east and west”
When I first moved to China with my parents at the age of 15, I could only say nihao and xiexie. But since then, I’ve learned a lot about the language.
One thing that I really like about Chinese is that there are plenty of strange words, like dongxi. The first time I heard this word from my Chinese friends, I didn’t understand and felt quite curious. They would say qu mai dongxi. How could they buy the two directions I asked them, “Can we buy nanbei ” My friends laughed and told me a story. Since all markets in ancient China were set up from east to west, people just used dongxi to mean things. Isn’t this amazing
After that, I became more interested in studying Chinese. It’s not only about learning a new language but also learning a different culture. Learning a new language seems to be a challenge, but it’s also fun.
Q&A Chain
1. Why does "dong xi" seem to mean directions
He took the words literally.
2. What if you heard "qu mai dong xi"
Its true meaning is go shopping / buy something.
If you don't understand new words:
Ask a friend / Look it up / Guess from context.
3. Any cultural insight
In ancient China, old markets ran from east to west.
Language Points
Isn’t this amazing
This is a rhetorical question. It doesn’t need an answer.
Since then, I’ve learned...
Since means from that time.
But in writing, since can also mean because.
Which "since" means "because"
a) I’ve learned a lot since I moved to China.
b) I was confused since I thought "dong xi" meant directions.

Step 1: Let’s go deeper into the story

Step 1: Another short misunderstanding story
“The ‘library’ mistake”
When I first learned English, I heard the word “library”. I thought it meant “bookstore”, since in my language “libro” means book. One day I told my friend, “Let’s go to the library to buy a dictionary.” He laughed and said, “You don’t buy books there. You borrow them for free.” Wasn’t I surprised Now I love borrowing books from the library. Isn’t it great to learn the real meaning
