Several months ago,I worked as a volunteer in an amateur (业余的) tennis tournament (锦标赛) called Tennis 123.One afternoon,I watched a match between a 5-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy.Wang, the founder of Tennis 123,told me that the 5-year-old was the youngest player in the tournament.
Tennis 123 has no age requirement and players compete according to their level from 2.0 to 5.0.But surprisingly, the younger players often beat the older ones.
In the end,the 5-year-old lost the match 0-4.She threw her racket (球拍) metres away and cried terribly for a long time.During the match, she often looked to her mother for help.I checked the girl’s previous results:she had lost 24 matches straight. That afternoon only brought two more losses, including the one with the boy I saw.
When a player’s win ratio (比率) drops below a certain number, they will be placed at a lower level. In the girl’s case, she was already at 2.0,the lowest level,so she had nowhere else to be placed.I discussed the possibility of improving the tournament rules with Wang to better protect these very young kids.
Wang told me that the tournament has matches for beginners, young children, and those who have never won a game before. However, the girl’s parents, both retired athletes themselves, believed that she should stay at the 2.0 level as the girl’s physical condition was quite good.
Still,I disagreed.I worried that continuing to play like this would hurt the girl’s confidence in the court and in her future life.I remember when I played at the 3.0 level two years ago and lost so many times that I went back to 2.5 — it was very frustrating (令人沮丧的).So I don’t think it’s a good idea to put so much pressure on children at such a young age.
Losing can be lonely, whether in tennis or in life. But losing is part of the path towards winning one day.By giving them better support,we can make sure young people grow up with confidence.

There is more of a connection between food and culture than you may think. On an individual level,we grow up eating the food of our culture. It becomes a part of who we are.
Many of us associate food from our childhood with warm feelings and good memories and it ties us to our families, holding a special and personal value for us.Food from our family often becomes the comfort food we seek as adults in times of frustration and stress.
On a large scale, traditional food is an important part of culture. It also operates as an expression of cultural identity.Immigrants bring it wherever they go,and it is a symbol of pride in their culture and a means of coping with homesickness.
Many immigrants open their own restaurants and serve traditional dishes. However, the food does not remain exactly the same. Some materials needed to make traditional dishes may not be readily available,so the taste and flavour can be different from what they would prepare in their home countries.Additionally, immigrants do not only sell dishes to people from the same countries as them, but to people from other countries. Therefore, they have to make small changes to the original dishes to cater to a wider range of customers. Those changes can create new flavours that still keep the cultural significance of the dishes.
We should not only embrace our heritage through our culture’s food, but also become more informed about other cultures by trying their food.It is important to remember that each dish has a special place in the culture to which it belongs, and is special to those who prepare it.Food is a window into culture, and it should be treated as such.

We are what we eat. From high-calorie meals to low-fat lunches, much of our health depends on what we eat.We know about the benefits of eating fittingly for our physical health,
but cooking food is proving to be good for our mental health as well.
Some people are now supporting the therapeutic value of cooking food. It’s not just about the end result but also the experience someone goes through.Dr Mark Salter,a consultant psychiatrist, told the media,“Baking and cooking are good therapies. They help patients develop planning skills,short-term memories and social skills—lack of which may lead to mental illness.”
A chef (大厨) called Hussain agrees that cooking is great for helping our mind. She loves to bake and became the champion of a TV show related to baking. She says that “Baking’s always been about therapy...It’s never really been about the cake.”And she thinks that baking is an important tool for our socialisation and mental health.
Certainly, creating some delicious food takes our mind off bad things and gives us something to do,helping us get through some difficult times.People have said that mixing dough (生面团) to make bread, for example, has given them a sense of calm and control.
Research has shown that doing creative tasks, like cooking, makes us feel happier.Nicole Farmer, who studies how food influences our biology, behaviour and mental health, told the media that “Cooking represents the human experience of food, and serves as a means of nurturing people through food,so there is no doubt that it can bring us timely positive feelings.”
Of course, cooking can be a very sociable activity, and sharing the end result is a rewarding experience.Hopefully,as we start to meet up with friends and family again,we can enjoy the benefits once more and put us all in the right state of mind.

Can you tell the difference between a glass of regular and diet soda No,you can’t.
36. .That’s where the trouble starts.Until recently, everything we have eaten contains some amount of calories.
So when we drink diet soda, the sweetness tricks our body into thinking it’s real sugar but when those energy-packed calories don’t arrive, the insulin in our brain has nothing to store.
37. .It’s called metabolic syndrome, which is a mix of conditions that include increased blood pressure, high blood sugar and weight gain which can increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease and strokes.
While drinking diet soda with the meal may sound like a tasty calorie-free alternative to plain water, this may be the worst time to drink it because the cheating calories in the diet soda could finally destroy the real calories we metabolise.38. .
Another problem could be the fact that artificial sweeteners in diet soda can be 10 to 100 times sweeter than sugar.39. .It’s like when you go to a party expecting loads of food and you end up with a handful of vegetables. You’re left unsatisfied and hungry.
In the same way, artificial sweeteners can leave our brains wanting more, which leads to increased appetite and potential weight gain.40. ,maybe just stick to water.

Growing up,I was always around my grandma Meredith. She was the one who originally inspired my love for cooking and my dream of becoming a chef.Yet,one day I received a text that would turn my whole life around,“Grandma is seriously ill,” the text read,“and we need your help in assisting with her care.”
Without a second of hesitation,I agreed to travel back home.Thankfully,my boss at the restaurant let me take unpaid leave for the next several months,so I could come home to help out with Gran. After driving across several states,I finally got back to our family home in West Virginia.Yet,what I saw was really hard for me to bear. The Meredith I saw then was not the lively, joyful Meredith I had seen while I was growing up.
“Tony!” she called to me from her bed.“It’s so good to see you!”
“Gran,” I sighed,“I’m not Tony.That’s Dad,your son.I’m Hank.”
This was the start of a months-long journey of helping out around the house-cooking,cleaning,and,most of all, keeping Gran in good health and good spirits.
Every day,I cooked delicious food to keep everyone’s spirits high. But,secretly,I hoped that cooking some dishes that we had made together in my childhood would somehow help get Gran’s memory of me back,if not just for a moment.
Stews (炖菜),chops (排骨),and roasts — I served all of these to Gran and my parents around the clock. When I wasn’t taking Gran out for strolls (散步) in her wheelchair or changing her bed sheets,I was cooking.I had cooked for dignitaries (显要人物) while at the restaurant in New York City, but never had I poured my heart out into my meals than I did then for Grandma Meredith.

M:Good afternoon, everyone.Welcome to another edition of Europe Today.Today I’ll talk about a survey that was done recently.A survey by the European Union of the standard of living in various member countries was published yesterday. This major study investigated prices and wages.
First, let’s see prices. They are based on the cost of the same basket of shopping in various European cities. These cities are not necessarily the capitals, but cities which represent the business and financial centres of each country. The most expensive places seem to be in Scandinavia, with Denmark coming top, followed by Sweden.France is not far behind. The cheaper places are in the new member states with Poland coming near the bottom of the table.
Now,let’s see wages. The results were calculated from wages and hours in twelve different jobs.Again,a Scandinavian country was top of the table, the highest wages being paid in Denmark, followed by Germany.Lower wages, again, were in the new member states, with Poland coming at the bottom of the table.Well, that’s all for today’s programme.See you tomorrow at the same time.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
