Summer camps everywhere are filling up fast, but opportunities remain open for camps where fun and games centre around food—growing it, that is. Your kids will learn how to tend to vegetables and livestock(家畜) and almost certainly taste the fruits of their labour. Here's a small sampling of what's out there.
Muscoot, New York
This farm offers a half day Wrangler Camp(a livestock centred experience) for kids and a two week long Young Farmers camp for kids in grades one through eight. Camps range from $150 for week long half day sessions to $350 for full day sessions.
Sproutin' Up, Colorado
An agriculture farm with a focus on education, Sproutin' Up offers skill building programmes for teens throughout the year, but their summer camp for kids is all about fun. In addition to farm activities, the kids spend time at a local climbing gym. Three weekly half day sessions are available for $200 each.
Humboldt, California
Located north of San Francisco, this sleepaway camp spreads out over several hundred acres in the coastal hills of Sonoma County. The lodging(住处) is tent style, with outdoor showers. A range of farm activities, are available throughout the summer.

Like many of the Indigenous(土著的) communities across the Australian continent, the remote communities in north west New South Wales are struggling. Many of the 300 or so residents rely on welfare. Higher electricity bills—up to $3,000 a quarter for some households—further worsen the poverty. They're always at the end of the power line, so the service there is quite extraordinary in terms of cost. It's a real problem that needs to be fixed.
To that end, Anderson and other Indigenous leaders have formed the First Nations Renewable Energy Alliance(FREA) to push for renewable energy in Indigenous communities. They partner with private enterprises to support Indigenous communities looking to switch to renewable energy.
“We can build a power station where the community exists,” Anderson says, “so people are able to successfully live in the environment the way they want to live and have access to power which enables them to better determine their economic future.”
Only a handful of Indigenous communities have set up renewable energy projects in Australia. The Indigenous owned and operated company AllGrid Energy, for instance, has installed solar panels and battery storage systems to replace diesel(柴油) generators in the communities of Ngurrara and Kurnturlpara in the Northern Territory's Barkly Tableland. Within two months of the system being installed in May 2016, people were moving back to their homelands, the communities growing from just two permanent residents to about 40.
But FREA will go one step further, working with community leaders and acting as a conduit(纽带) between the communities and the businesses they are dealing with. This is essential, says Anderson, to avoid predatory(吞并) practices they have seen in the past, with companies “playing on the psychology of poverty” to gain advantage. The FREA has drafted terms of agreements that will guide how companies engage with Indigenous communities for renewable energy projects.
One of the next steps for FREA will be to identify a community that can act as a test case for a renewables project. “Our experience is that if we can make it work for one community, it will work in every other community,” Anderson says.
( ) 4. What is FREA expected to do for the remote Indigenous communities
A. Increase power supply to them. B. Help them return to their homelands.
C. Shake them off poverty. D. Reduce their higher power costs.
( ) 5. What does the author indicate by mentioning AllGrid Energy
A. Renewables projects are inaccessible.
B. Renewables projects are quite workable.
C. Renewables projects can increase locals' income.
D. Renewables projects can coexist with diesel power plants.
( ) 6. What's Paragraph 5 mainly about concerning FREA
A. Its strategies to win over the businesses.
B. Its cooperation with community leaders.
C. Its potential conflict with energy companies.
D. Its innovation in directing renewables projects.
( ) 7. What's FREA going to do next
A. Consult the experts.
B. Select a pilot community.
C. Collect sufficient construction funds.
D. Make renewables projects available to all.

Jude and Leo Hawes have come a long way since they entered the world, born at just 29 weeks. Airlifted from their home in Launceston to hospital in Hobart, the twins, now happy and healthy four year olds, were delivered into the ICU to be cared for and monitored. A gift from the Tasmanian branch of Octopus(章鱼) for a Preemie(早产儿) was a light in the dark for them.
“These stories really do remind us why we all spend so much time and our own money making these octopuses,” Bianca, the co founder of the project, tells Woman's Day. “It means the world to me that I can do something in whatever small way to make the journey for the babies and parents just that little bit easier. I believe if we can help others, no matter how small a way it is, then we should.”
The eight legged creatures are specially created to calm and comfort early newborns. “In instances where the babies can't be held for weeks, or even months, the familiarity of the parents' scent(气味) on the octopuses can help with the bonding process because babies already know it as a safe scent when parents can finally hold them,” Bianca says.
The volunteer project began after a nurse reached out to Bianca to create a prototype of octopus she could take into hospital for a trial.
“It took me a good four to five months to teach myself how to write a pattern and get it approved,” explains Bianca, who creates the handmade helpful octopuses for no cost to families in need.
“I started making them as fast as I could, but I wasn't able to make the amount they needed.” Soon Bianca met the group's other co founder Andrea Carey and the pair started creating the creatures together in their spare time.
“I have always enjoyed being creative and my imagination runs wild with colour combinations,” says Bianca, her Facebook page Octopus for a Preemie Tasmania accumulating more than 2,000 followers. “It makes my day!”
( ) 8. What is the purpose of the project
A. To promote octopuses to preemies.
B. To comfort the preemies' parents.
C. To reach out to nurses for preemies.
D. To bring a sense of security for preemies.
( ) 9. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “prototype” in Paragraph 4
A. Certificate. B. Model. C. Patent. D. Trademark.
( )10. What can we learn about the project from the last two paragraphs
A. It is well received. B. It is highly profitable.
C. It needs to be improved. D. It takes ages to see the results.
( )11. What does Bianca's story imply
A. Good is rewarded with good. B. Two heads are better than one.
C. Small deeds make a difference. D. Actions speak louder than words.
Almost half a billion small, cheap electrical everyday items from headphones to handheld fans ended up in landfills in the UK in the past year, according to research.
The not for profit organization Material Focus, which conducted the research, said the scale of the issue was huge and they wanted to encourage more recycling.
More than half a billion cheaply priced electronic goods were bought in the UK in the past year alone—16 per second. Material Focus findings showed that of these items, 471m were thrown away. This included 260m disposable vapes, 26m cables, 29m LED, solar and decorative lights, 9.8m USB sticks, 4.8m miniature fans, etc.
Scott Butler, executive director at Material Focus, described it as “fast tech”. He said, “People should think carefully about buying some of the more frivolous items in the first place.” He said the items people bought were often “cheap and small”, and that consumers may not realize they contain valuable materials that could be salvaged if recycled.
Small electricals can contain precious materials including copper, lithium and stainless steel. These components can be recycled and used in wind turbines, medical devices and electric vehicles. Material Focus said that while people were used to the idea of recycling larger electrical items such as fridges, lots of smaller devices were left unused in houses.
Butler said, “We want to get the message across that anything with a plug, battery or cable can be recycled and there's somewhere near you to do it. The scale of the issue is huge, but there's an easy solution—just as the trend for recycling and repurposing fashion has grown and grown, we want to encourage the nation to recycle fast tech, guilt free and fuss free.”
Material Focus said that when consumers bought a cheap item, they saw it as disposable. They estimate that UK citizens spent more than £2.8bn on these cheap products in the past year. The non profit group described it as “the tip of the iceberg” when it comes to the growing issue of wasted electricals in the UK. More than 100,000 tonnes of waste electricals are thrown away every year, and there are 880m electrical items of all kinds lying unused in the UK homes.
( )12. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage
A. The research was carried out by the authorities to encourage recycling.
B. Cheaply priced electronic goods are easy to be thrown away around the world.
C. Disposable vapes made up the majority of cheap electrical goods that ended up in landfills.
D. British people are inclined to buy cheap electrical goods.
( )13. What can we infer from Butler's words in Paragraph 4
A. Cheap items don't deserve consumers' careful use.
B. Valuable materials can be found in these cheap and small electrical goods.
C. Low quality electrical goods are easy to be recycled.
D. Consumers should stop buying these “fast tech” in the first place.
( )14. What did Butler appeal to people to do
A. They'd better recycle small devices as well as larger ones.
B. They'd better set up somewhere near them to do the recycling.
C. They'd better catch the trend of disposing small and cheap items.
D. They'd better spread the idea of “fast tech”.
( )15. What's the main idea of the passage
A. Tons of small and cheap electrical items are thrown away.
B. Legal efforts should be made to ban small electrical items.
C. “Fast Tech”—the future generation.
D. Recycling valuable materials from electronics is urgent.

Lily was cleaning windows, and it was what she must do for her family's new Chinese restaurant. Everything had to be absolutely perfect: unique decorations, skillful employees, and delicious traditional food. Then customers would love the place, making the business a success.
Lily's family had just moved here from San Francisco, having bought a small restaurant, which was opened yesterday. She was new in the neighborhood and had few friends. The first few days at her new school hadn't been easy, either. She found it hard to talk to people she didn't know and it seemed like the students hadn't even noticed her. She was eager for a friendship, though.
Lily shifted her vision to look outside the restaurant as a girl about her age, with abundant red hair, walked up the street. The girl paused to study the sign announcing their opening and then looked directly at Lily with a friendly smile. Lily smiled back shyly and lifted a hand, accidentally waving with the cleaning cloth. The girl smiled at her amusement and waved back happily.
Lily hesitated, not accustomed to starting friendship, but she felt courageous, so she opened the door. “Hello,” she said, adding the first thing that entered her head, “do you like Chinese food?”
“I don't know, but I like to try new things,” the girl remarked, and then she introduced herself as Gabriela.

根据上文“we committed ourselves to completing the highest 35 mountains in the Catskill region”可知,作者要完成卡茨基尔地区最高的35座山的徒步旅程;结合下文“but Mica bravely conquered those mountains at age twelve”可知,Mica在12岁时勇敢地征服了那些山,由此可知,此处指的是徒步旅行的强度。
根据语境及下文“Mica's spirit has shown me just what a miracle is.”
36. kicking 37. a 38. would be made
39. which 40. if/whether 41. beyond/outside
42. strategic 43. to contain 44. updated
45. and
kick off在句子中不做谓语动词使用,它和“China plans to start building a lunar base in about four years”之间为主动关系,因此使用现在分词kicking做状语。
故填would be done。
be believed to do意为“被认为做某事”。
根据for the next three Chang'e missions可知,Chang'e 6和Chang'e 7及Chang'e 8是并列关系,使用并列连词and来连接。
One possible version:
Dear_Sir/Madam,
I'm_Li_Hua,_an_exchange_student_from_China_during_this_summer_vacation. I'm delighted to learn that volunteer students are wanted for an exhibition of Chinese ceramics to be held in the local art gallery. Now I'm writing to apply for the position.
The reasons for my application are as follows. First of all, having been exposed to foreign teachers since a young age, I can communicate freely with others in English. What's more, years of experience of being the monitor makes me a brilliant organizer, which will help a lot to keep the exhibition in order.
I'd appreciate it if you could take my application into consideration.
Yours,
Li_Hua
One possible version:
Lily_could_not_think_of_an_additional_conversation_until_she_had_a_sudden_idea. She ran into the kitchen and came back with a small package. “Some Chinese candy for you to try,” she explained. “If you enjoy it, I hope you'll return and tell me.” “Excellent, I'll see you around soon.” Gabriela headed down the street, glancing back with a cheerful wave. Lily spent the remaining afternoon hoping Gabriela really would return and not think her gift was strange.
The_following_day,_Lily_was_doing_her_restaurant_routine_when_she_heard_an_unexpected_knock. It was Gabriela with a plate covered with plastic wrap. Lily grinned with enthusiasm and opened the door with an excited greeting. Gabriela presented the plate and said, “I brought biscuits made from my grandmother's recipe to thank you for the delicious candy.” “Come in, and we can have some biscuits right now,” Lily stammered, happy inside. Lily was now positive that the restaurant would make a wondrous impression on the customers and that she was going to enjoy life here immensely.
