about a teenager named Kenneth Shinozuka. His grandfather has dementia and
would often leave his bed at night unnoticed. Kenneth’s aunt struggled to keep track
of him. Once, the police found him walking beside a busy freeway. This incident
inspired Kenneth to find a solution. He invented a small device named
SafeWander. It’s a thin wireless sensor that sticks to the bottom of the foot. When
the person stands up, the sensor detects the pressure change and immediately sends
an alert to the caregiver’s smartphone. Kenneth’s aunt tested it on his
grandfather for eight months. It worked every single time—no more unnoticed
wandering. His aunt could finally rest easier.
For this invention, Kenneth won a major science prize. Now, he’s still improving
SafeWander and testing it in senior care centers nationwide. Staff at these
centers have shared that it’s already made their care work much easier. It’s a
