(2023·全国乙卷)If you want to tell the history of the whole world, a history that does not privilege one part of humanity, you cannot do it through texts alone, because only some of the world has ever had texts, while most of the world, for most of the time, has not. Writing is one of humanity’s later achievements, and until fairly recently even many literate (有文字的) societies recorded their concerns not only in writing but in things.
Ideally a history would bring together texts and objects, and some chapters of this book are able to do just that, but in many cases we simply can’t. The clearest example of this between literate and non-literate history is perhaps the first conflict, at Botany Bay, between Captain Cook’s voyage and the Australian Aboriginals. From the English side, we have scientific reports and the captain’s record of that terrible day. From the Australian side, we have only a wooden shield (盾) dropped by a man in flight after his first experience of gunshot. If we want to reconstruct what was actually going on that day, the shield must be questioned and interpreted as deeply and strictly as the written reports.
In addition to the problem of miscomprehension from both sides, there are victories accidentally or deliberately twisted, especially when only the victors know how to write. Those who are on the losing side often have only their things to tell their stories. The Caribbean Taino, the Australian Aboriginals, the African people of Benin and the Incas, all of whom appear in this book, can speak to us now of their past achievements most powerfully through the objects they made: a history told through things gives them back a voice.
When we consider contact (联系) between literate and non-literate societies such as these, all our first-hand accounts are necessarily twisted, only one half of a dialogue. If we are to find the other half of that conversation, we have to read not just the texts, but the objects.

B. He represented the local people.
C. He ruled over Botany Bay.

3. What does the underlined word “conversation” in paragraph 3 refer to?( )

4. Which of the following books is the text most likely selected from? ( )
A. How Maps Tell Stories of the World
B. A Short History of Australia
C. A History of the World in 100 Objects
D. How Art Works Tell Stories

Yes, There’s a Museum for That!
Nowadays you can find a museum for absolutely everything and everyone, from the International Banana Museum to the National Mustard Museum. Here are some of the most fascinating museums.
International Tennis Hall of Fame(ITHOF) in Newport, Rhode Island was built on the site of the first United States National Lawn Tennis Championships in 1881. A highlight is a Kings Court for “court tennis”, which isn’t so much a tennis court but an off-kilter rectangular room with surprising slopes and angles. Ten such courts in North America cost approximately 3 million to make, but visitors to the museum can rent it and play.
National Comedy Center(NCC) in Jamestown, New York is located in the hometown of Lucille Ball. It features exhibits like Joan Rivers’s joke catalog. Visitors create their “sense of humor profile”, which is used to customize their comedy experience through a device called a LaughBand, before they go through the turnstiles.
Spam Museum(SM) in Austin, Minnesota is dedicated solely to the precooked meat brand, Spam. This free 14,000-square-foot museum tells the history of the Hormel company, the originator of Spam, and its mark on the world. Highlights include Monty Python’s famous “Spam” sketch and free “spamples” given out by volunteer guides, who are known as the Spambassadors.
Museum of Motherhood(MOM) in St. Petersburg, Florida is the first of its kind — a museum and educational center covering the art, science and history of mothers. It provides interactive experiences like trying on pregnancy vests to help visitors understand the experience of motherhood.

Nestled along the shores of Lake Mergozzo in northern Italy stands a 1960s architectural relic reborn as a sanctuary of retro charm. The house, constructed in 1963 during Italy’s postwar design renaissance, had languished for years until Hilary Belle Walker — a San Francisco-born vintage fashion entrepreneur — stumbled upon its listing on a Milan real- estate portal in 2018. Though Hilary resided in Milan, her fascination with the lake region’s unspoiled beauty compelled her to purchase the property sight unseen, relying solely on photographs and trusted associates’ assessments.
Restoration posed unique challenges. While preserving original elements like pistachio-green terrazzo (水磨石) floors and mid-century wood paneling (镶板), Hilary strategically sourced period-accurate décor. She combed European flea markets for discontinued Swedish floral wallpaper from 1965 and salvaged unused avocado-toned bathroom fixtures from a shuttered Turin warehouse. The living area juxtaposes two rare Missoni wool rugs — one unearthed at a French estate sale, the other from a Bergamo antique dealer — their geometric patterns echoing the home’s recurring plum-and-moss-green palette.
A daring maroon ceiling installation modernizes the retro aesthetic without overshadowing vintage foundations.
The lakeside setting dictated design choices. A sliding glass wall — an engineering feat for its time — opens to a balcony retaining original hexagonal cement tiles, framing panoramic lake vistas. Outdoors, a two-tonne sandstone table hauled from a disused Alpine quarry now anchors alfresco (户外的) gatherings under a century-old oak. Hidden across the adjacent gravel road lies Hilary’s coup de gr ce: a secluded pebble beach accessible via a camouflaged path, where dawn swims occur in near-total solitude.
Lifestyle contrasts with urban modernity define the home’s ethos. While Hilary’s Milan apartment buzzes with digital conveniences, here a 1963 Garrard turntable spins jazz vinyls, and a boxy Philips DVD player replaces streaming services. Provisions come exclusively from Mergozzo’s family-run bottega (作坊), adhering to Hilary’s philosophy of “slow consumption”. This intentional disconnect extends to the region’s cultural hybridity: Swiss-Germanic influences permeate local dialects and customs, a legacy of cross-border traditions.
Critics might question the practicality of such meticulous restoration, particularly the decision to retain original single-pane windows despite their thermal inefficiency. For Hilary, however, authenticity trumps modernity. “The flaws are heirlooms,” she insists, noting how winter frost patterns on the glass recapture her childhood memories of Lake Tahoe. Even the master bedroom’s creaky parquet flooring — a tripping hazard by contemporary standards — remains untouched, its imperfections deemed narrative artifacts.

4. What was Hilary’s key principle in selecting materials during restoration?( )
A. Prioritizing modern convenience.
B. Balancing aesthetics with functionality.
C. Sourcing materials matching the historical context.
D. Strictly using original 1960s components.

5. What can be inferred about Hilary’s attitude toward modern technology in the lake house?( )
A. She deliberately avoids it to preserve historical authenticity.
B. She embraces it cautiously to balance aesthetics and function.
C. She prioritizes affordability over technological advancements.
D. She incorporates it minimally due to limited local resources.

6. What is the primary purpose of the paragraph 3?( )
A. To contrast architectural styles between Milan and Lake Mergozzo.
B. To explain how natural surroundings guided design decisions.
C. To criticize the impracticality of preserving outdated materials.
D. To emphasize the financial challenges of the restoration process.

7. Which statement best captures the central theme of the passage? ( )
A. Architectural preservation requires sacrificing modern comforts.
B. Postwar Italian architecture holds unmatched historical significance.
C. Cultural identity can be woven into design through intentional curation.
D. Lakeside properties demand constant modernization for functionality.

Architects have long turned to the past for inspiration. In this age of concrete and steel, however, they’re more likely to look for aesthetic (美学的) influence than technical know-how. But an ancient Chinese construction technique called dougong is a remarkable exception.
Consisting of a series of wooden brackets (支架) with no nails or fasteners, it’s over 2,500 years old and commonly found in Chinese architecture, such as Beijing’s Forbidden City. Many structures built during the Tang and Song dynasties featured “curtain walls” which were non-load-bearing. As a result, the unsupported wood shouldering the weight might break. Designers needed a technique which would more evenly spread the burden across their structures. Their solution was dougong.
Engineering has come a long way since the ancient Chinese building technique was in fashion. But there’s a timeless quality to it. Modern- day designers in many areas are adopting it to produce amazing and stable work of architecture. Among them is Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, who used dougong-inspired methods for his recent buildings: Yusuhara Wooden Bridge Museum and Café Kureon, a 2,120-square-foot restaurant.
For architect Terrence Curry, the attraction of using ancient methods is about finding something that can “speak to Chinese identity”. His structure Dougong Cube, now part of the School of Architecture, Tsinghua University in Beijing, was constructed using classical-style brackets and over 2,000 boards. “It has fundamental structures of dougong, but we just aren’t using it in the way it was intended to be used. We’re really pulling it out — emphasizing its beauty and complexity, and the way it works,” said Curry.
“The shape and function of dougong is directly related to properties of wood, and the ability of people who make these buildings. In this way, there’s little need for decoration because the structure and design give it its distinctive look.”

8. Why is dougong considered an exception?( )
A. It has existed for a very long time.
B. It keeps stable with no concrete or steel.
C. It was ignored by architects in the past.
D. It meets both structural and decorative needs.

9. What was the function of dougong in ancient times?( )
A. To beautify the structures.
B. To avoid nails and fasteners.
C. To distribute weight of buildings.
D. To replace unstable curtain walls.

10. What does the author want to show by mentioning Kengo Kuma’s buildings?( )
A. Dougong holds lasting appeal.
B. Dougong makes for great buildings.
C. Dougong deserves wide recognition.
D. Dougong plays a big role in engineering.

11. What can be learned about Dougong Cube?( )
A. It aims to explore Chinese identity.
B. It’s more complex than common structures.
C. It reproduces traditional use of dougong.
D. It’s a combination of tradition and innovation.
