〔公益事业——在儿童医院担任教师〕
(2025·全国二卷)Kathy Ho teaches high school inside Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford (LPCH).“Sometimes I don’t like saying that I’m a teacher,” says Ho.“People get in their minds an idea of what teachers do, but that’s not really what it is here.”
“Here” is room 386, where each year, about 500 LPCH patients also become students. The hospital school is free of parents, doctors, and medical procedures. It’s a place of learning.About half of Ho’s students stay for a week or less; others are there for more than a year. Most of Ho’s students will recover, which means that preparing them to return to school is an increasingly important component of care.
Still, in room 386, academics don’t come first.Physical health and mental health are the priority.“If you’re scared about something and thinking only about that, there’s no way you’re going to be able to learn,” Ho says.“I’m a coach, an adviser, and a comforter, and that’s what it means to be a hospital teacher.”
There are up to 30 students at any given time in Ho’s class. She generally works with their regular teachers to get lessons and tests being used at their home schools. Some teachers don’t give the kids any assignments; they express sympathy instead.“I feel like is a disservice to the kids,” Ho says.“They think their teachers don’t care about their schoolwork.”
it
Ho recognizes the psychological benefit of helping kids keep up with their peers (同龄人) outside the hospital.“I actually think the medicine is only a small piece for some problems,” says Julie Good, director of pain management services at LPCH. “It’s about problem- solving around what it means to have a full life. Those kids have dreams.School can keep those dreams alive by giving kids a way to learn and grow.”

(2026·长春质检)Each birthday,Charlie Jeffers would receive brand-new building block sets. One day in 2020 he was home building with them when it struck him that many kids couldn’t play with building blocks because of their cost.“Building blocks bring me a lot of joy,and I want to spread that joy to other kids,”he said.Given that some unwanted building block bricks might end up in landfills,he decided to do something to address the problem.
Charlie put up posters around his neighborhood, asking people to donate their unwanted building block bricks.Because most of the donations were loose bricks and not in complete sets,he used them to develop new sets with fun themes.Charlie delivered the sets to a local Boys and Girls Club. The kids were thrilled to receive them.
A local newspaper ran a story about what he was doing.“Word spread quickly, and soon I had more donated bricks,”he recalls.Charlie recruited (招募) some volunteers, and through social media, the project expanded across the Bay Area. Then people in other states began reaching out to Charlie, asking him how they could get involved.Pass the Bricks,a nonprofit organization, was born.
Mailing bricks to other states can be pricey,so Charlie developed a network of helpers. They do what Charlie does but in their own communities.Recipients (接受者) have included children receiving cancer treatment in San Francisco,a boy who was shot while playing outside his house in Alabama, and school kids in Micronesia.Pass the Bricks has donated more than 13,000 sets to kids in need and collected nearly 7,000 pounds of used building block bricks.
With every building block brick finding a new home,a future where every child has the chance to play, learn, and grow through the magic of the building block is in sight.

(2026·陕西适应性检测)Long Haifen, from a mountainous village in Guizhou Province, is now a freshman at Huazhong Agricultural University(HZAU). Ordinary as she may seem, she represents the strong bond between her hometown and the university, as well as the transformative power of education and sympathy.
In July 2002, Xu Benyu, then a junior student at HZAU, volunteered to teach in the rural areas of Guizhou. The following year, he gave up postgraduate studies and returned there, teaching at two schools for two years, including Long’s elementary school. In 2005, HZAU established the “Benyu Volunteer Service Team”, engaging students annually to continue providing educational support.
In 2017, the 19th volunteer group, including Cao Yuanyuan and Li Zongqing, arrived at Long’s school, Weimin Elementary School, which had 174 students from kindergarten to sixth grade but only six classrooms. The school was severely understaffed. Cao had to teach four subjects while Li managed 23 classes per week. Long and her classmates cherished the opportunity to learn and worked diligently.
The volunteers not only taught knowledge to Long but also developed her personal growth. They encouraged her to deliver speeches at the school’s flag-raising ceremonies, helping to build her confidence. They also broadened her views beyond the mountains. In August 2017, Long participated in an educational trip to Beijing organized by the volunteers, which strengthened her courage to study outside the mountains and have access to better educational resources and a wider world.
Unfortunately, in 2020, her father was involved in a car accident, placing the family in financial difficulty. Hearing this, the volunteers quickly raised enough money, ensuring Long’s following education. All these efforts paid off. Long was admitted to HZAU.
Looking ahead, Long is excited to welcome college life. She hopes to give back to society, become a volunteer like her teachers, and help more children plant the seeds to grow and thrive.
