Last Friday witnessed a school charity sale in our school playground. Organized by the Student
Union it was available to all students, with the aim of cultivating students' good quality of caring for
others.
The sale kicked off at 5 PM, lasting for an hour, with well-prepared items of every class put on sale.
At each and every stall lay a wide range of books, school supplies, sports equipment, or whatever. Within
an hour all the items were sold out. It is said that the money raised for charity will be donated to the
disabled children in our city.
The activity greatly won our favor. Not only did this sale equip us with the organizational
capabilities, it also enhanced the awareness of all teachers and students to give love.
读后续写
Then, he bought a small cage and kept Lucky in it. In the beginning, Lucky seemed fine inside it. He
believed he had made the right choice to keep Lucky close and secure. However, as time passed, things
took a turn for the worse. After a fully recovery, Lucky wanted to spread its wings and fly in the sky.
When all its attempts failed, what Lucky could do was sitting inside the little cage and squawking sadly.
Several days later, Lucky refused to eat and drink. Worried and confused, he didn’t know what to do
about it.
Knowing the bad situation, Albert’s parents decided to help Lucky and their son. They told their son,
“If you really love Lucky, you should think of how to make it happy.” After careful consideration, Albert
opened both his heart and the cage. Lucky was released and flew away. Two weeks later, a wonderful
thing happened: Lucky returned, flying around Albert and chirped happily, seeming to say thanks to him.
This had happened from time to time since then. Instead of losing a forced friend, Albert had made a
permanent one.

board games, chat about travel stories, and enjoy classic movies. It’ll be nice to hear about your trip to
Yunnan. I bet you took lots of pictures! Our address is 14 Green Street, but it’s easy to miss because the

Summer presents a collection of festivals that combine fun, charity, and awareness. Here are
four special celebrations happening in June:
National Go Barefoot Day (June 1)
Established after the 2004 tsunami, this day promotes barefoot walking for health benefits
like stronger muscles while supporting Soles4Souls, a non-profit that has provided 19 million
shoes globally. You can join barefoot activities or organize shoe collections. By simply taking off
your shoes, you can improve your own health while helping children get the shoes they need.
World Oceans Day (June 8)
Oceans cover 66% of Earth and provide 50% of our oxygen, yet 8 million tons of plastic
waste pollute them yearly. This day honors the ocean’s irreplaceable roles while inspiring
worldwide participation. People can get involved by cleaning beaches, reducing single-use plastics,
and watching educational films — turning awareness into action for a healthier planet.
Be a Kid Again Day (June 12)
This lighthearted day encourages adults to relive childhood joys — whether sliding down

playground slides, building sandcastles, or re-watching classic kids’ movies. Beyond personal
enjoyment, the celebration also supports meaningful causes like A Kid Again, a US non-profit
organization that provides fun-filled adventures for children with life-threatening illnesses.
Helen Keller Day (June 27)
Held every year on June 27, this day honors Helen Keller (1880-1968) who became the first
person with her disabilities to earn a college degree and wrote 12 books. While celebrating her
amazing life, the day also recognizes all those who support the blind and deaf community through
events like charity fashion shows and public readings of Keller’s inspirational works.

Spanish scientist Pilar Bosch has found a way to use bacteria (细菌) to repair 18th-century
paintings.
Bosch, a microbiologist, tells Reuters she got the idea for the method while considering
possibilities for a paper toward her doctoral degree. During this process, she discovered someone
else’ s paper that suggested bacteria can be used to repair artworks.
At around the same time, Bosch learned that her mother was struggling to find a good method
for repairing 18th-century paintings. The paintings sat in Santos Juanes — one of the oldest
churches in the city of Valencia.
Bosch said her mother, Pilar Roig, mentioned how difficult the repairing process at the
church was. One reason was the glue used to remove the paintings from the walls in the 1960s. It
was nearly impossible to remove it completely.
“My mother had a very difficult problem to solve and I found a paper about bacteria used to
clean frescoes in Italy,” Bosch said. A fresco is a kind of painting that often appears across a large
wall.
第 4 页 共 12 页
Bosch added she decided to write her doctoral paper on the same subject. That was more than
ten years ago. Today, she gets to work with her mother on the church repair. They are using the
bacteria method to remove glue from artworks. The $4.46 million project is being provided by
local organizations.
The process involves feeding small amounts of the glue to the bacteria. After a time, the
bacteria begins to break down the glue. The mother-daughter team then mixes the bacteria with a
natural substance, called a gel, and places it onto the paintings. They say that after about three
hours, the gel mixture is removed, leaving the paintings glue-free.
Bosch has also used her bacteria removal process in other repairing projects in Italy and
Spain. And she is now training other scientists to use a different kind of bacteria to clear walls of
painted graffiti.
24. According to Pilar Roig, why was it difficult to restore the paintings at the church
A. It was impossible to use the glue. B. The paintings were too old to restore.
C. It was unlikely to fully remove the glue. D. The paintings sat at the oldest church.
25. What can we learn about Bosch’s doctoral paper
A. It was written over ten years ago.
B. It was published by local organizations.
C. It was one and only rewarding paper.
D. It was about using bacteria to protect glue.
26. What does Bosch’s mother probably work on
A. Researching bacteria and medicine. B. Repairing old churches and works of art.
C. Studying different kinds of artworks. D. Teaching biology in a key university..
27. What’s the best title of the text
A. Repairing 18th-century Paintings Is Very Difficult
B. Different Kinds of Bacteria Have Different Functions
C. A Spanish Scientist Writes the Doctoral Paper on Bacteria
D. A Spanish Scientist Uses Bacteria to Repair Old Artworks

Dialects(方言) are a cultural resource and the collection of ordinary people’s wisdom. They
promote the culture of a region. When an area’s dialect dies out, it means the failure of the local
culture. Dialects are also an essential material to study the history of a country’s language and its
evolution, making up for lack of documents.
第 5 页 共 12 页
According to UNESCO, nearly 7,000 languages and dialects worldwide are facing extinction
(消亡), falling out of use at the rate of about one every two weeks. In China, there are over 120
languages at risk of extinction. More than half of them is spoken by fewer than 10,000 people.
Xu Kaifei, a new media journalist who has a 7-year-old son, finds that Hainanese is not being
spoken by the younger generation: “Children do not use the dialect, and some can’t even
understand it.” So, he started to teach his son the language word by word, uploading videos on
social media platforms for viewers interested in Hainanese.
Due to education and work, where standard Chinese is used, many young people who spoke
dialects have turned to standard Chinese. Some think speaking only a dialect is a barrier to finding
jobs in cities, where standard Chinese is widely used. So, they stop using their native tongue. In
many families, the parents guide the switch for their children.
To research dialects, Zhao Rixin, a professor studying dialects at the Beijing Language and
Culture University, has visited over 100 places, mostly villages. “Villages are the best sites as their
dialects are well preserved, thanks to the small-scale input of outsiders,” he said. His last survey
was done in a village in Chengde, Hebei Province in north China, whose dialect is close to
standard Chinese. “The dialects in north and northeast China have been better preserved than in
other places”, he said. The dialects of northeast China are popular due to their culture, tradition
and economic development. The development of the media and genres (类型 ) of art has also
enhanced people’s pride in this region’s language.
28. Why are dialects considered valuable
A. They are created by both the official and the folks.
B. They document the development of a country’s language.
C. They are mainly used in formal education systems.
D. They have been replaced by written documents in most regions.
29. Why was Xu Kaifei’s son mentioned in paragraph 3
A. To give an example of a child learning Hainanese.
B. To explain how social media spreads dialects.
C. To show younger generations’ dialect loss.
D. To highlight a parent’s effort to save dialect.
30. What does “the switch” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A. Speaking standard Chinese in big cities.
B. Speaking more dialects when finding jobs.
第 6 页 共 12 页
C. Taking seriously parents’ advice on language learning.
D. Giving up the native tongue for the standard Chinese.
31. What do Zhao Rixin’s words imply
A. The northern dialects are popular and easier to understand.
B. Many local dialects are very similar to Standard Chinese.
C. Dialects are better preserved in areas with fewer outsiders.
D. Economic development in the north is faster than that in the south.
D
Whether it’s a cup of coffee or tea, many people look for a caffeine (咖啡因) fix to kick-start
their day. During waking hours, caffeine helps improve concentration. But how does it influence
sleep
“A person’s sleep is unique to his body type, health and age,” said Lauri Leadley, the founder
of the Valley Sleep Center in Arizona. “Everyone is genetically (基因地) programmed to follow
the rising and setting of the sun. But caffeine can break this natural sleep-wake habit, influencing
sleep.”
According to a 2022 review, adenosine levels are higher at night, meaning people feel sleepy
by bedtime. Having caffeine controls it, which makes it difficult for people to fall asleep. Caffeine
also controls other chemicals produced in the body. “When we have caffeine during the day, by
nighttime it causes a fall in melatonin (褪黑激素), something that improves sleep, which is one of
the reasons why sleep is influenced,” said Dr. Peter Polos, a sleep medicine specialist.
“Once in the body, caffeine remains for several hours, taking about 6 hours for half of its
influence to disappear,” said Leadley. A 2013 study divided people into three groups, with people
drinking caffeine 6 hours, 3 hours or immediately before bedtime. Even those who stopped
drinking 6 hours before bed had their sleep cut by a whole hour.
However, caffeine doesn’t just influence how long you sleep but how well you sleep.
“Studies show caffeine cuts down slow-wave sleep, the period of deep, restful sleep that leaves us
feeling lively in the morning,” Polos said. It’s a period of sleep that seems to play an important
role in growth, memory, and disease prevention. Most adults spend 10% to 20% of sleep on
slow-wave sleep.
However, the influence of caffeine on a person is subject to things including age and genes.
One 2017 review in the Sleep Medicine Reviews suggests that people become more sensitive to
caffeine as they get older, while differences between people of the same age could be related to
第 7 页 共 12 页
genetic differences.
32. How does caffeine influence people’s sleep
A. By changing people’s genes. B. By increasing slow-wave sleep.
C. By cutting chemicals like melatonin. D. By righting people’s sleep-wake cycle.
33. Why does the author mention the 2013 study
A. To introduce a new idea. B. To back up Leadley’s argument.
C. To compare different studies. D. To show the bad influence of caffeine.
34. What can we infer about slow-wave sleep
A. It is important to human health. B. It influences the length of sleep.
C. It takes up less and less of sleep time. D. It can be increased by more daytime rest.
