For animal lovers eager to contribute to wildlife conservation while travelling, the Endangered Elephant Shelter in Thailand offers a meaningful volunteer program. This reserve cares for 24 Asian elephants, the majority of which were rescued from elephant riding camps where they were cruelly used to entertain tourists. Unlike unethical facilities, it is Asia’s first chain-free elephant reserve, providing 18 hectares of forests, lakes and grazing (放牧) grounds for elephants to wander freely and enjoy their retirement as they deserve.
What will you be doing
Volunteers will engage in daily elephant care: cleaning enclosures and pools, harvesting food like banana trees, creating enrichments and accompanying elephants to eat in forests. The workday runs from 6:30 to 17:00, six days a week, with scheduled breaks.
Volunteers will also learn about the difficult situation of Thai Asian elephants — only 3,000–3,500 wild individuals remain, and many captive ones suffer from tourism or street begging.
What is included
Program fees ($ 543 per week, 1–12 weeks available) cover accommodation, three daily meals, airport collection, on-site support, Wi-Fi and group tours. Exclusions include flights, travel insurance and vaccines (疫苗).
What are free-time activities
Free-time activities range from temple visits and river swimming to exploring local markets in Cha-am and Hua-Hin.
What are requirements
The program welcomes international volunteers with basic English or Thai skills, a passion for animal welfare and the ability to tolerate Thailand’s hot, wet climate. You must be 18 years old or over.
1. What do we know about the elephants in the Endangered Elephant Shelter
A. They are chained up at night. B. They are approaching retirement.
C. They live a free and peaceful life. D. They were all mistreated in the camps.
2. What are the volunteers expected to do at the shelter
A. Raise money for the elephants.
B. Take elephants to forests for food.
C. Plant banana trees as elephant food.
D. Publicize the animals’ troubles to tourists.
3. Which of the following is required for joining the program
A. Speaking both English and Thai. B. Adapting to the tropical weather.
C. Having experience in animal care. D. Serving the shelter at least 12 weeks.

Since 2018, British physicist Jessica Wade has been writing Wikipedia articles to elevate the profiles of female scientists. This initiative was inspired after she met climate researcher Kim Cobb at a conference. Impressed by Cobb’s work, Wade was horrified to find no Wikipedia page for her. That’s when Wade made the decision to write the first of many biographies (传记).
Since then, Wade has dedicated herself to increasing diversity in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). In less than a decade, she has created over 2,000 Wikipedia entries. Her focus is on women and other underrepresented scientists who have been overlooked. She highlighted a significant gap in a 2024 podcast, noting that while women make up 51% of the global population, only about 19% of English Wikipedia biographies are about women across all professions.
Through her research, Wade has rediscovered numerous pioneers. These include Dawn Shaughnessy, part of a team that discovered five super-heavy elements; Roma Agrawal, the lead engineer for London’s Shard skyscraper; and Gladys West, a Black mathematician whose work is crucial for GPS technology. Wade’s efforts have earned her recognition, including a TEDx Talk, the Rosalind Franklin Award, and praise from Wikipedia’s founder, Jimmy Wales.
However, Wade’s mission has faced opposition. Her biography on Clarice Phelps, a Black nuclear chemist involved in discovering a new element, faced scrutiny and even deletion threats from other Wikipedia editors. Wade successfully fought to keep the entry online.
Wade argues that the lack of diversity in science is not just unfair but negatively impacts research and innovation. Citing data from the American Association of University Women, she points out that women comprise only 26% of the STEM workforce, with Black and Hispanic (西班牙裔) women accounting for just 2% of engineers. She challenges the assumption that girls lack inspiration, stating that girls are already interested in science, and the key is to increase the proportion of women who stay in the field.
4. What motivated Wade to write her first Wikipedia entry
A. Her desire to win scientific awards.
B. Her passion for promoting scientists.
C. A request from Wikipedia’s founder.
D. A noted scientist lacking Wikipedia page.
5. What was the main focus of Wade’s contributions to Wikipedia
A. The scientific discoveries in the 21st century.
B. The careers of Black and Hispanic researchers.
C. The work of women and other ignored scientists.
D. The lives of the Rosalind Franklin Award winners.
6. What does the underlined word “scrutiny” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Public praise. B. Warm support.
C. Complete rejection. D. Thorough review.
7. What does the last paragraph present
A. Wade’s main achievements.
B. Wade’s opinions on scientific circles.
C. The necessity of enhancing diversity in STEM.
D. The recognition Wade has received in STEM.

Today, artificial intelligence (AI) has deeply spread into work and daily life. Recent industry surveys highlight that over 60% of office workers now rely on AI to handle repetitive, time-consuming routine tasks, while more than 40% of content creators, including bloggers and graphic designers, turn to AI tools for initial inspiration or draft outlines. While this technological shift has undoubtedly boosted work efficiency, young professionals are engaging in independent brainstorming far less frequently, and many college students openly admit they struggle to complete academic essays without AI’s support.
Tech scholars Lisa Morrison and David Chen have warned against this over-dependence in their influential paper AI as a Tool, Not a Substitute. They stress that AI should serve to enhance creative power, rather than replace independent thinking. The core strengths that make humans unique, such as deep emotional perception, flexible logical reasoning, and breakthrough innovative thinking, cannot be truly copied by AI, which operates only on pre-trained data and fixed algorithms (算法). Over-reliance on AI, they argue, will gradually reduce the drive of societal innovation.
Negative impacts are already clear: Some online writers use AI to piece together plot models, resulting in similar stories that lack genuine emotional sincerity; young product designers often apply AI-generated drafts directly without secondary creation, leading to identical-looking products lacking in cultural depth. Yet positive cases exist too: celebrated sci-fi writer Eleanor Carter uses AI to collect data on future tech trends, and then integrates her reflections on humanity to craft bestsellers like The Boundary of Time. Similarly, digital art team “Light and Shadow Studio” improves AI drafts with artistic insights, mixing traditional techniques and modern aesthetics (美学) for award-winning works.
AI’s convenience is undeniable, but it can never produce truly pioneering, revolutionary ideas. The integration of AI into our lives should be approached with a balance that prioritizes human creativity. Individuals must keep practicing independent thinking; schools should add courses on critical thinking to guide sensible AI use; society should praise works rooted in human creativity. Only then can AI serve progress, and creativity remain the engine of social development.

A. A substitute to copy originality.
B. A tool to inspire human creativity.
C. A replacement for human emotions.
D. A support system for fixed algorithms.
10. What can we infer from the third paragraph
A. AI-generated designs lack cultural depth.
B. All online writers use AI to create stories.
C. Digital works are not emotionally sincere.
D. Using AI properly helps create brilliant works.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Balancing AI Use and Creativity B. Tapping into Your Innovation in AI
C. More Self-control, More Innovation D. The Less AI Use, the Smarter You Are
D
Recently, a team of engineers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) published a study in Nature Communications, introducing an ultrasonic-based atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) technology. This innovative approach enables rapid abstraction of drinking water from sorbents (吸附剂), offering a new solution to water shortage in dry regions.
Atmospheric water harvesting technology captures dampness from the air using sorbents. However, conventional AWH systems rely on solar heat to evaporate (蒸发) and cool water from these sorbents, a process that takes hours or even days, leading to low efficiency. The MIT team’s important achievement lies in replacing solar heating with ultrasonic waves, whose working principle centers on high-frequency shakiness to break the weak bonds between water molecules (分子) and the sorbent’s absorption sites.
Ultrasonic waves, which work at frequencies above 20 kilohertz (not heard by humans), create targeted disturbances that generate force to release water molecules from the sorbent. The core of the device is a flat ceramic ring that shakes when electricity is applied, surrounded by an outer ring fitted with tiny tubes. The shaken-out water drops pass through these tiny tubes and are collected in containers attached above and below the shaking ring.
In tests conducted under different dampness conditions, the device successfully abstracted all water from fully wet sorbent samples in just a few minutes rather than the tens of minutes or hours needed for heat-based approaches. The researchers calculate that, compared to heat-based approaches, the ultrasonic device is 45 times more efficient at recovering water from the same material and can be an add-on to almost any sorbent material.
Unlike heat-based designs, the device does require a power source. The research team imagines that the device can be powered by a small solar cell, which can also act as a sensor to detect when the sorbent is full and automatically start the abstraction process, enabling multiple harvesting cycles in a single day. In the future, it is expected to develop household-level devices to provide a stable supply of drinking water for water-short communities.
12. What is the MIT team’s breakthrough in collecting water from the air
A. Employing ultrasonic waves. B. Expanding the size of sorbents.
C. Equipping more solar collectors. D. Updating experimental facilities.
13. What are the tiny tubes used to do in the ultrasonic device
A. Channel the water drops. B. Store the collected water.
C. Secure the two rings firmly. D. Absorb dampness from the air.
14. What does the author try to demonstrate by mentioning the heat-based method in paragraph 4
A. The accuracy of the test results.
B. The impact of conditions on the tests.
C. The difficulty in selecting sorbent materials.
D. The advantage of the ultrasonic-based method.
15. How does the author close the text
A. By explaining the limitations of the study.
B. By presenting future application prospects.
C. By comparing various water collection methods.
D. By stressing the significance of further research.

For four months, 15-year-old Ethan had buried himself in his bedroom workshop, his days and nights filled with wires, circuit boards, and endless adjustments. His dream was to submit his self-designed “Smart Plant Care Device” — inspired by his grandmother’s struggle to keep her potted plants alive during business trips — to the school’s annual Tech Innovation Contest. This year, the top 8 entries would be displayed at the school science fair, a rare opportunity for young inventors.
His best friends Maya and Sam were always there to help. After school, they’d crowd around Ethan’s workbench, passing him tools and cheering him on: “That sensor design is genius! It’ll definitely help your grandma’s plants prosper!” Sam, who loved coding, even offered to help improve the device’s control program.
Just as Ethan was about to test the final prototype (原型), disaster struck. One evening, while moving the device out for a power test, he tripped over a loose wire. The prototype crashed to the floor, its circuit board broken into pieces. What was worse, most of the custom components were not repairable, and the contest submission deadline was only two weeks away. “I can’t fix this in time,” he whispered desperately.
Ethan laid the broken prototype into a box under his bed, stopped talking about the contest, and even avoided Maya and Sam. He was afraid they’d laugh at his failure, or that Mr Torres, his science teacher who’d praised his idea, would think he was a quitter.
Mr Torres noticed his sudden withdrawal. He pulled Ethan into his office after class one day and said softly, “Invention isn’t just about building something perfect on the first try. Maybe we can present it in a different way.” He pulled out a laptop and showed Ethan a 3D modeling software. “You can create a digital prototype, add animation (动画) to show how it works, and explain your design process in detail. That’s just as valuable as a physical device.”

An Encounter with Chinese Calligraphy
Last month, I participated in a school workshop on Chinese calligraphy. Under the guidance of a master, I learned to hold the brush correctly and practiced basic strokes on rice paper. At first, my strokes were messy, but I followed the teacher’s guidance patiently. After repeated practice, I successfully wrote the character “Fu” (blessing) neatly.
This experience made me appreciate the elegance of calligraphy. It helped me see Chinese calligraphy carries timeless values, like focus and harmony, which still matter today. I came to understand that traditional arts are precious treasures that we should inherit and carry forward.
【答案】One possible version:
Ethan had never used 3D modeling software before, but he was willing to try. Mr Torres stayed late every day that week, teaching him the basics. Maya and Sam joined too. Maya helped draft clear, engaging explanations for the presentation, while Sam assisted with adding interactive elements to the model. Every afternoon, the three gathered in the school computer lab, buried in building a digital prototype. Gradually, Ethan regained his passion for the project. After finishing the final presentation, he submitted it to the contest.
The day came when the contest results were announced. Ethan’s heart raced as he stood in the school hall with Maya and Sam. When the host read out his name as one of the top 8 winners, Ethan couldn’t believe his ears. The three hugged tightly, cheering loudly. Later, he found Mr Torres and said, “Thank you for showing me that a broken prototype doesn’t mean a broken dream.” Ethan finally understood: Dreams don’t vanish when things go wrong. With friends who stand by you, a teacher who guides you, and the courage to try something new, new possibilities will always bloom.
