Of all the sports, I like swimming best. It’s an excellent full-body workout and it’s suitable for people of all ages.
In my daily life, I go to the swimming pool near my home once a week. Before entering the water, I do some stretching exercises to relax my body. Every time I step into the water, I feel fresh and relaxed. I can swim in different kinds of strokes (游泳姿势), like freestyle, butterfly stroke and breaststroke. It is my father who teaches me these movements. Swimming is not a team sport, so you can start without others. However, I also often invite my friends to swim together. It was about ten years ago, on a cold gray winter day. I was walking over to visit my dad when it began raining heavily. My clothes got wet, and my face was freezing cold. I knocked on his door and walked into his house. Warm steam (蒸汽) came from the kitchen. It touched my nose, and suddenly, I felt like I was 8 years old again. Dad was making Nana’s special spaghetti sauce (意大利面酱).
When I was growing up, Nana would make us a big Italian meal every Sunday. She would slowly cook her spaghetti sauce for hours. Then she would drop in potatoes, chicken, meatballs, sausage and sometimes even steak. When it was ready, we would mix it in the spaghetti, fix the plates and put cheese on it. It always made our bellies full, our hearts happy and the house smell delicious. Years later, the memory of those meals still makes my heart full.
I sat down while Dad made me a plate. It felt so good having a meal like we used to when I was a boy. We talked about those old times, and my warm-hearted aunt laughed over the memories, both good and bad. I didn’t feel cold any more.
Dad and Nana have been gone for years now. I still miss them. Although my daughter and I both know how to make Nana’s special sauce, we don’t cook it as often as we could. Maybe it is because no matter how hard I try, I can never get it quite right. Maybe it was just the love with which they cooked it that made it so delicious. Family rules help children learn what is OK and isn’t OK in the family. Following them can help children learn to follow rules in other places, so it’s not good to make rules too late. Good family rules are easy for children to understand (理解).
Today, on the way home from school, my mom tells me she starts to make some family rules. Clean your room every other day. Be ready for dinner at 7:00 p.m. That means sitting at the table, with clean hands. If Mom is having a meeting in the house, be very quiet. That means turning down the music and the TV. Be ready for bed at 9:30 p.m. and get up at 7:30 a.m. to get ready for school. Take out the rubbish (垃圾) on Monday morning before school. Clean the bathroom on Friday.
Following these rules isn’t too hard, and sometimes it’s even fun. Other times, it can be tough. For example, if your room is really dirty and you can’t finish cleaning it on that day, you have to finish it on the next day, along with something else you have to do. That isn’t easy.
Mom makes these rules because she loves me a lot. She wants me to learn how to be on time, be clean and tidy and be polite (有礼貌的). Every day, I try to follow her rules. These rules help make my family warm and happy. I feel lucky to grow up in such a family.
