(2025·扬州中学高二期末)The only science fiction that ever really caught my attention when I was growing up, besides Star Trek and Robert A.Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land, was the novel Contact by Carl Sagan. When I was 15, I saw the 1997 film version of this. Later, as a 17-year-old adapting to my first semester at university, I read the book. Contact eventually became the gateway for me to try more popular science books.
One thing that interested me was the bitter fights the researchers got into with one another about their different ways of measuring the expansion rate of space-time. On second thoughts, maybe this was a lesson I was supposed to draw from Contact, but, at the time, I didn't regard such politics as scientists' problems. Instead, what caught my attention was the portrayal of Ellie Arroway, a scientist who searched for alien intelligence. In the film version, Ellie is seen listening to space using a pair of headphones connected to the Very Large Array(VLA)—a real facility in New Mexico. The filmmakers take advantage of the fact that the non-expert reader or viewer feels they understand these devices.
Astronomers don't really do this for the purposes of actual research because there is rarely any point. This is the kind of detail that is unimportant for the purpose of the film of Contact, but how it portrays radio astronomy is one of the inaccuracies I occasionally hear scientists complain about. I was lucky enough to observe the behaviour of some water molecules (分子) in the universe using the VLA for my third-year lab course. We didn't hear the data. Instead, we processed it so that we could look at it.
That was probably the only time I ever shined in the lab, and I was so excited to be a real-life Ellie Arroway. Later, I was forced to think more about the human aspects of my working experience. I witnessed unnecessarily heated arguments between scientists, complete with shouting and chalkboard punches But, thankfully, Contact had not only introduced me to the idea of radio astronomy as a possible career path, it had also given me a road map for remaining calm in the confused conflict of astronomical wonder and human politics.

(2025·哈尔滨三中期中)When we think about lives crammed with meaning, we often focus on people whose grand contributions benefited humanity. Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela surely felt they lived life to the full and had a worthwhile life. But how about us ordinary people, struggling in a typical existence
There is an important element to consider. Think about the first butterfly you stop to admire after a long winter or imagine the scenery at the top of a hill after a fresh hike. Sometimes existence delivers small moments of beauty to us. When people are open to appreciating such experiences, these moments may enhance how they view their life. This element is defined as EA (experiential appreciation) by Joshua Hicks, a psychological professor at Texas A & M University.
Recently, he and his research team set out to figure out whether EA was related to a person's sense of meaning in a series of studies that involved more than 3,000 participants. In an initial test, researchers had participants rate their agreement of different coping strategies to relieve their stress. They found people who managed stress by focusing on their appreciation of life's beauty also reported experiencing life as highly meaningful.
Researchers then conducted a series of experiments, in which they gave participants specific tasks and, once more, asked them to report how strongly they identified with statements linked to purposes, etc. In one case, participants who watched an awe-inspiring video reported having a greater sense of EA and meaning in life, compared with those who watched more neutral videos. After reflecting on the results collected from the participants, researchers confirmed their original theory.
But applying that insight can be difficult. Our modern, fast-paced, project-oriented lifestyles fill the day with targets. We are on the go, and we attempt to maximize output both at work and at leisure.
This focus on future outcomes makes it all too easy to miss what is happening right now. Yet life happens in the present moment. We should slow down, let life give us a pleasant surprise and embrace the significance in everyday life.

A.To introduce a concept.
B.To attract readers' interest.

6.How did the researchers conduct the study
A.By studying previous research data.
B.By shooting videos starring the participants.
C.By designing different strategies to reduce stress.
D.By analyzing the response from the participants.

A
A few years ago, we bought a
Taj Mahal (泰姬陵) model for my dad's birthday, hoping
to combine his love for architecture with family time.
Each evening, my dad and I gathered around the large dining table to build the model. We faced thousands of tiny white pieces, each packaged with precision in numbered plastic bags, accompanied by a thick instruction book.
The evenings passed quickly, and the building rose before our eyes. We could see our efforts producing good results, and as we turned to the boring task of ordering the colored bricks on the building's floor, our conversation too took a turn.
We were amazed by how complex the model and its instruction book were. We realized the book itself was a work of art, beautiful, but also surprisingly detailed and clear. It provided us with the comfort of certainty. We knew if we followed all the instructions, we would end up with a model that looked exactly like the picture on the box. If we made a mistake, all we had to do was to repeat our steps and start again.
Life, however, does not fit together so neatly and rarely provides us with such clear instructions. We talked over our respective lives, decisions made, and actions and choices never taken. Dad reflected on a life well lived, and I, in my mid-thirties, on the uncertain path that lay ahead.
Here, we were the expert architects doing the assembling (组装), but out in the world, we were the ones being assembled. We think we're in control, but our choices are shaped by forces beyond our control. In the face of uncertainty, we have to proceed, trusting both in the process and the end result.
Sometimes, on the days I return home, I go to the spare room to look at the completed model, which brings forth a sense of happiness and comfort. It reminds me that life is built slowly, with mistakes, an element of uncertainty and no instruction book. It shows that consideration, warmth and faith will result in a life well lived. Life itself is not about what we materially create or leave behind, but rather how we live it.

(2025·重庆育才中学月考)Do you have a suit or dress in the closet that you haven't worn for years but are reluctant to get rid of Maybe you say instinctively, “I can't throw that away because I paid good money for it.” If you recognize this in yourself, then you are suffering from commitment to the sunk cost fallacy It occurs when we feel that we have invested too much to quit. This psychological trap causes us to stick with a plan even if it no longer serves us and the costs clearly outweigh the benefits.
Arkes and Blumer conducted a survey revealing that people are influenced by the sunk cost fallacy in their decisions. Participants were asked to imagine a situation where they accidentally booked two ski tickets for the same date, spending $100 on a ski trip to Michigan and $50 on Wisconsin. They were also told the latter would be more enjoyable. It turned out that 54% chose to go up to Michigan despite the reasonable choice being Wisconsin, because they had made greater initial investment.
The sunk cost fallacy takes place when we let emotions cloud our decisions. Once we've invested in a choice, we feel guilt or regret if we don't follow through, without realizing that past investment won't be recovered. Instead, we base decisions on past costs, ignoring present and future costs and benefits. This may be due to loss aversion (厌恶), where people place more weight on losses than on gains. As a result, our decisions often aim to avoid losses instead of seeking the benefits gained if we let go of the past commitment.
No one can deny the fact that we benefit a lot from perseverance. So our society loves to emphasize perseverance with some phrases, like “Never give up! Don't waste.” But only you know the right path for you. Sometimes walking away is the hardest choice of all. You might realize a path you're on is no longer the right one or never was. That's a painful recognition.

5.What phenomenon does the author describe at the beginning of the passage
A.People benefit from sticking with a plan.
B.People's consumption view has changed.
C.People refuse to give up the past commitment.
D.People's clothes are becoming more expensive.
根据第一段中舍不得丢掉很多年都不穿的旧衣服的例子及“It occurs when...outweigh the benefits.”

6.Why did 54% of the participants choose the Michigan trip
A.To save more of the loss.
B.To appear more reasonable.
C.To make greater investment.
D.To enjoy more of themselves.
根据第二段最后一句和第三段中的“This may be due to...the past commitment.”

7.When does the “sunk cost fallacy” occur
A.When we don't follow through our choices.
B.When we attach more importance to potential gains.
C.When we feel it worthwhile to invest in past decisions.
D.When we emotionally stick with investment already made.
根据第三段中的“The sunk cost fallacy takes place... future costs and benefits.”

8.What is the author's attitude toward “perseverance”?
A.Favorable. B.Objective.
C.Critical. D.Unclear.
根据最后一段中的“No one can deny the fact...But only you know the right path for you.”

A
Recently, I found myself back at the Tube station.
It had been my home station when I first lived in
London in my 20s. When I stepped off the train and
onto the platform, a strange thing happened. For a moment, I felt time collapse, and my feet automatically (自动地) picked up the way they'd followed every day for seven years.
At that time, I couldn't have told you whether I was 24 or 42. The girl from the past and the woman here now were one and the same. I felt her enthusiasm and sense of self-belief, realizing them as real and as a memory at the same time. When I came out of the station, my body was made to go left—to follow the path home—until my mind corrected it, turned me right, and sent me off into the day. At that moment I was very clear about what I was thinking, but it made me wonder about what it would be like to go back.
When I stood at the station, however, I saw the advantage in looking back. I asked myself if my 24-year-old self would be proud of me today. Perhaps there would be something that she'd be excited about—the people I've worked with and the friends I've kept. Maybe that's what she'd cherish, while I tried to explain to her the concepts of “cost-of-living” and mortgage
Looking back also allowed me to remember how big she dreamed and how enthusiastically she believed in things. I remembered her love of fun and how much she enjoyed a party. A few days after, I found myself turning to music lists belonging to my 24-year-old self and dancing to them, timelines merging once again. Looking back gives me the energy to move forwards.

This is the best time and this is the
worst time; this is the time of great material richness and
this is the time of desert of soul. Everyone seems to be
rushing around for something but they have never fulfilled
their dreams. Everyone tries to seek happiness but it seems to be nowhere to be found.
When asked “What on earth can make you happy?”, most modern men would give similar replies such as becoming extremely wealthy, or getting promoted in work and then becoming very wealthy. When asked “What will you do with your wealth?”, they would make a long list of things they have been longing for. However, haven't you noticed the multibillionaires (大富豪) are not as happy as we common guys suppose them to be Haven't you noticed that the multibillionaire celebrities don't even enjoy the fundamental freedom of going shopping with their own families without being followed by annoying paparazzi
If we focus our happiness on such big issues, we are bound to be unhappy all through our life, because those big issues might just occur to us once in a blue moon.
As Socrates (苏格拉底) once put it, “He is the richest man who is content with the least, for content is the wealth of nature.” But how can we “be content with the least”? If you pay due attention, our life is crammed with little joys, sometimes too little to be noticeable. Stop once in a while in your rush to your destination, look around and you will see that there are always little things worth cheering for. You got an “A” in a test. Good! You listened to an inspiring lecture. Great! You offered a helping hand to someone who had a flat tire. Amazing! Your dream girl or boy greeted you with a sweet smile. Fantastic! And so on and so forth. Let's cheer for the little joys in life!
Please keep in mind that never should we wait to be happy!

5.What does the underlined part “once in a blue moon” in paragraph 3 probably mean
