Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
The Mayan Indians lived in Mexico for thousands of years. The Maya were so bright that they achieved a lot. They had farms, temples and cities with many buildings. They knew much about nature and the world around them. This knowledge helped them to live a better life than most people of that time.
In ancient Mexico there were many small clearings in the forest. In each clearing was a village with fields of crops around it.The Maya planted seeds after they cleared the land.A farmer was able to grow crops that produced for several people. But not every Maya had to be a farmer. Some were builders or priests (祭司).
The Maya believed in many deities. They built large temples to honor them.Skillful workers built cities around these temples. It was difficult because they had to carry all of the building materials themselves.Today, many of these ancient Mayan cities and temples are still standing.
Although the Maya worked hard to build the beautiful cities, very few of them lived in them.Usually, only the priests lived in the cities. The other people lived in small villages in the forests.Their houses were much simpler. Most Maya lived a simple life close to nature.
Around the year 800 AD,the Maya left their villages and beautiful cities, and never returned. No one knows why this happened. They may have died from a deadly disease. They may have left because the soil could no longer grow crops. The lost secrets of the Maya are still beyond the reach of modern people. They are still one of our greatest mysteries.

Palestinian farmer Salman al-Nabahin was working in his garden in Gaza when he noticed that some of the new trees he'd planted on his land did not root properly. Curious about what might be causing the issue, al-Nabahin asked his son to help him start digging.
His son's ax (斧子) struck something hard. When the two men began to clear away the dirt, they discovered an item they did not recognize.A little Internet searching provided the answer to their mystery: They'd come across a Byzantine-era floor mosaic (拜占庭时期马赛克地画) featuring birds and other animals.
This happened six months ago. Now, archaeologists (考古学家) are hard at work studying the flooring to learn more about its secrets and civilization values.
The mosaic features 17 images of birds and other animals presented in bright colors. Archaeologists believe artists created the flooring sometime between the fifth and seventh centuries, though they don't know whether the mosaic had religious origins. In total, the land covering the entire mosaic is about 500 square meters, and the mosaic itself measures about 23 square meters. Some parts of the mosaic appear to be damaged, likely from the roots of an old tree.
“These are the most beautiful mosaic floors discovered in Gaza, both in terms of the quality of the vivid representation and the complexity of the pattern,” says René Elter, an archaeologist in Jerusalem. “Never have mosaic floors of this precision in the patterns and richness of the colors been discovered in the Gaza Strip.”
The Gaza Strip, which is located between Israel and Egypt and was a busy trade route throughout history, is home to many ancient civilizations. The farmer and his son discovered the mosaic about a kilometer from the border with Israel. Archaeologists and other experts are concerned about the mosaic's future because of the ongoing conflict there and a lack of funding for historical protection.

(2025·沧州高二检测)Magnetic fields are promising to be a useful tool in the hunt for human settlements that have been lost to the sea off the coast of the UK.An upcoming project is set to use magnetometry (磁力测定) data to seek Doggerland, the flooded land that connected Britain to mainland Europe until the end of the Ice Age, but there's hope that this technique could be used to find long-lost civilisations all over the world.
The study comes from the University of Bradford in the UK.Their plan is to closely look at magnetometry data gathered from a portion of the North Sea and attempt to identify any strange anomalies (异常) that could suggest the presence of archaeological structures.
The team is especially keen to use these techniques to look for traces of human activities beneath the North Sea since it's thought to have been home to some of the largest prehistoric settlements in Europe. Before it was flooded over 8,000 years ago,Doggerland was a rich and diverse habitat that likely attracted prehistoric humans and others.Despite its potential that lays beneath the North Sea, we know relatively little about the culture that once was developed here.
“As the area we are studying used to be above sea level, there's a small chance that this analysis could even reveal evidence for hunter-gatherer activity. That would be the most important part,” Ben Urmston, a PhD student at the University of Bradford, said in a statement.“We might also discover the presence of middens, which are rubbish dumps that consist of animal bones, shells and other biological material that can tell us a lot about how people lived.”
Remarkably little of the world's oceans have been explored, let alone for the purposes of archaeology.Nevertheless, advances in technology are continuing to show that the coastlines are hiding countless traces of ancient human activities, even evidence of long-lost civilisations.
Thanks to projects like the one at the University of Bradford, as well as many others, the future of marine archaeology is looking promising.Nevertheless, we have to be patient.Just don't expect to stumble across the sunken city of Atlantis anytime soon.

(2025·保定期中)Great white sharks, the largest predatory (捕食性的) sharks in the world with the most fatal attacks on humans, are tough to imagine as newborn babies. That is partially because no one has beheld one in the wild, it seems, until now.
Wildlife filmmaker Carlos Gauna and UC Riverside biology doctoral student Phillip Sternes were scanning the waters for sharks on July 9, 2023, near Santa Barbara on California's central coast. That day, something exciting appeared on the viewfinder of Gauna's drone camera. It was a shark pup (幼畜) unlike any they'd ever seen.
“We expanded the images, put them in slow motion, and realised the white layer was being shed (蜕) from its body as it was swimming,” Sternes said. “I believe it was a newborn great white shark shedding its embryonic layer.”
These observations are logged in a new paper in the journal Environmental Biology of Fishes. What Gauna and Sternes observed could help solve the long-standing mystery of the great white shark's birthing habits. This may well be the first evidence we have of a pup in the wild. Great white sharks, referred to only as white sharks by scientists, are gray on the top and white on the bottom. But this roughly 5-foot-long shark was pure white.
Though the paper authors acknowledge that it is possible that the white layer the shark shed might have been caused by a skin condition, the two believe what they saw was in fact a newborn great white shark. First, female great white sharks give birth to live pups. A second reason is the presence of large, potentially pregnant great white sharks in this location. Finally, this location off the coast of central California has long been proposed as a birthing location for great white sharks. Many scholars believe great white sharks are born farther out at sea.
Great white sharks are listed as a critically endangered species. “Further research is needed to confirm these waters are indeed a great breeding ground. But if they are, we would want lawmakers to step in and protect these waters to help great white sharks keep thriving,” Sternes said.

(2025·河南豫北名校期末)Born in Wales in 1950, Martin Lockley was a pioneer in the study of the dinosaur tracks and footprints preserved in rocks around the world. His work helped his fellow paleontologists (古生物学家) understand what the footprints can tell us about dinosaurs and the world that they lived in.
The footprints and tracks left behind by dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals are called trace fossils (痕迹化石). They can offer clues to how quickly an animal walked or ran and even what their skin may have looked pared with the body fossils of bones and teeth, trace fossils contain evidence of the interactions that the animals had with their environment and can describe what the physical environment may have looked like. They offer a more reliable way to imagine the speed of a dinosaur than analyzing the bones.
Lockley's mother and father were nature lovers. Lockley loved to observe nature. His father inspired him to “just go out and observe and trust your observations”, which proved important in Lockley's launching his future career in dinosaur research. He took that advice with him to Gunnison, southwest of Denver, the United States. While North America is home to some of the largest number of fossil footprints in the world, Lockley's work with prints and his father's words took him far and wide. He explored fossil and track sites in China, R.O. Korea, Spain and the United Kingdom.
In addition to finding the tracks, Lockley devoted time and energy to preserving these important parts of the fossil record. This includes guiding the politics needed to create UNESCO World Heritage Sites so that future generations wouldn't lose out on these precious relics of the past.

(2025·重庆市巴蜀中学校期中)When British archaeologist Howard Carter opened King Tut's tomb (坟墓), it was full of gold and other valuables. When he and his team then attempted to remove King Tut's mummy (木乃伊), they did a great deal of damage to the mummy.
Decades later, in 1968, experts conducted an examination of King Tut's mummy using simple X-ray technology. Three important discoveries led to various theories about his death. First, the X-rays showed that bones in Tut's chest were missing. Some guessed the damage was caused by a war injury or an accident. Plus, there was a small hole in the back of the skull (头骨), and pieces of bones were inside it, causing many to believe that Tut was killed by a blow on the
back of the head. Was he murdered by people wanting to take control of Egypt Finally, a serious broken bone was discovered on Tut's left leg. Tut was hurt a few hours before his death. This could have been the result of an accident. Could an infection from the injury have killed Tut
In 2005, scientists under the direction of Zahi Hawass used new X-ray technology to study the mummy. They discovered that the damage to Tut's chest was caused by Howard Carter, and that the hole in Tut's skull was made when the body was getting ready for burial. While this ruled out the theory of murder, it still didn't tell us exactly how he died.
Then, in 2008, when Hawass and his team analyzed the DNA of the mummies in other tombs nearby, they made some shocking discoveries. They found Tut's father and mother, who had similar DNA, were actually brother and sister. The DNA they passed on to Tut might have made it easy for him to catch a disease. Did an infection that started in his broken leg cause his death No one knows for sure. But Hawass and his team hope they will someday have an answer to this age-old mystery.
