Like many young people, Chen Zhen, a young inheritor of straw weaving (草编), once worked in a city, far from her hometown’s traditions. However, during a visit back home, she was deeply moved by the beauty of straw weaving and concerned about its fading future. Carnival season is at its height this weekend. New Orleans’s annual series of parades began more than a week ago. Thousands attend the parades and they leave a mess of trash behind. Despite a busy daily cleanup operation that leaves the post-parade landscape remarkably clean, uncaught beads (珠子) hang from tree branches or get ground into the mud under the feet of passers-by. They also flow into storm drains, and finally these non-biodegradable plastics (不可降解塑料) flow into Lake Pontchartrain, polluting the water and threatening local wildlife.
“The plastics disaster is becoming a defining characteristic of this event,” said Brett Davis, a New Orleans native who grew up catching beads at Mardi Gras parades. He now heads Bead Reborn NOLA — a nonprofit organization that works to reduce the waste. One way to use less new plastic beads is to use old ones again. Parade-goers can now donate their caught beads to the organization and it repackages and resells the products to raise money for the services it provides to adults and children with disabilities. The city has also placed collection stations along parade routes to encourage recycling.
Aside from recycling, there’s a small but growing movement to find something to replace plastic beads, such as beads made from paper, recycled glass, or even seeds; headbands made from old T-shirts; and small packages of local food products. These options are gaining attention as ways to keep the fun while mitigating the harm caused by waste.
However, changing a long-standing tradition is not easy. Plastic beads remain widely used because they are cheap and popular. Still, Brett Davis believes that with growing awareness, Carnival season can become greener.
28.What does the author point out in the first paragraph
A.The great joy Carnival season brings to visitors.
B.The successful daily cleanup after each parade.
C.The serious plastic waste problem caused by Carnival season.
D.The long history of carnival-season celebrations in New Orleans.
29.How does the organization deal with the plastic beads
A.It stops the use of them. B.It recycles them.
C.It cuts down their production. D.It sells them to the disabled.
30.What does the underlined word “mitigating” probably mean in paragraph 3
A.Studying. B.Accepting. C.Adding. D.Reducing.
31.What is Davis’s attitude towards an eco-friendly Carnival season
A.Positive. B.Doubtful. C.Uncaring. D.Unclear.
Scientists in San Juan Island are testing a new method to listen to whales. They are using hair-thin fiber-optic cables (光纤) as underwater microphones. This technology is called Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS).
Unlike traditional tools that listen from one spot, DAS can use the whole length of the cable as a sensor. This allows scientists to find the exact place of a whale and track its direction.
The researchers have already proven that DAS works for large baleen whales (大型须鲸). In a test, they recorded the sounds of fin whales and blue whales by using it. Now, they face a new challenge: Seeing if it works for killer whales. Killer whales use high-frequency clicks, which are harder to detect (监测).
This research is important. The local killer whales, known as Southern Residents, are disappearing, with only about 75 left. They face three main threats: underwater noise from ships, a lack of their main food — Chinook salmon, and toxic pollution. Ship noise can cover up the killer whales’ clicks, making it hard for them to hunt the already few salmon.
If successful, the DAS system could provide real-time data on where the killer whales are. For example, if scientists detect killer whales moving towards a busy shipping lane, they could tell nearby ferries to slow down or reduce noise, giving the whales a safer path. The method could also open a new window into killer whales’ behavior and communication.
With thousands of miles of cables already on ocean floors worldwide, this technology could create a huge global network for monitoring underwater life and helping with conservation efforts.
32.What do the researchers use DAS for
A.Guiding whales. B.Tracking whales. C.Discovering whales’ food. D.Repairing ships.
33.What is the researchers’ next plan after using DAS on large baleen whales
A.To apply DAS to killer whales.
B.To build a cheaper DAS system.
C.To study fish species in deeper water.
D.To record the sound of baleen whales.
34.What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A.How DAS works.
B.Why it is difficult to find killer whales.
C.What killer whales suffer.
D.How the research is carried out.
35.What can be inferred from paragraph 5
A.Ocean life will be protected worldwide.
B.DAS has already worked well on killer whales.
C.Killer whales can reduce noise by slowing down.
D.DAS may help protect and study killer whales.
Many new gardeners dream of harvesting baskets of vegetables. 36 . If you want to head straight to success, these four foundational (基础的) steps will guide you from planning to harvest.
Choose the right location
The success of your garden begins with its location. 37 . Ensure the area has good drainage (排水) and is protected from strong winds.
Fill your raised beds with quality soil
38 . For raised beds, use a well-draining mix like sandy loam (砂壤土), which supports strong root growth and nutrient uptake. You can buy this from a local garden center. Fill the beds completely to the top, taking care not to damage the sides during the process.
39
After preparing your garden, understanding your climate is key to choosing suitable plants. Record your area’s average monthly high and low temperatures. Sort each month into cold, cool, warm, or hot. This will clearly show what your garden will experience throughout the year and guide your planting schedule.
Choose suitable plants
Finally, choose plants that match your climate, season, and garden conditions. Beginners should start with easy-to-grow varieties like cherry tomatoes, lettuce, or herbs. Consider plant height, growth habits, and compatibility. Plant together those that need similar amounts of sun and water. 40 .
A.Consider garden types
B.Understand your local climate
C.Healthy soil is the foundation of a productive garden
D.This makes care easier and helps your whole garden go well
E.In reality, they often end up with a handful of lessons on what not to do
F.Choose a place that receives at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight daily
G.This gives you a clearer picture of where to place your garden for the best sunlight

Chinese words are often formed by 57 (put) different characters together, and sometimes a single character can be a word. The old 58 (sign) from Sumer and Egypt are gone, while Chinese characters have kept changing and still play 59 important part in Chinese culture.
According to a story, Chinese writing 60 (invent) by a man named Cang Jie. Over time, these drawings became more standardized (规范化的).
Characters can also be put together to express more difficult ideas. For example, the character for “rest” puts together the characters for “man” and “tree,” while “prisoner” is a “man” inside a square. However, these characters don’t show 62 (they) pronunciations. So, a system 63 one part of a character shows the meaning and another part suggests the pronunciation was developed.

Leo’s heart was filled with pity for this little bird. His mom noticed his concern and said, “Let’s help it together.” Carefully, Leo picked up the bird and brought it home. With his mom’s help, Leo used an old shoe box as the bird’s nest and put in some cotton. Every day, he gave the bird water and small pieces of bread. He named it Pip. At first, Pip was afraid and didn’t eat much. But Leo never gave up. Slowly, Pip began to trust him. Its wing started to heal (痊愈), and it grew stronger day by day. Leo felt happy watching Pip recover. Sometimes, the whole family would watch Pip hopping (跳) around the room, and Leo’s mom would smile and say, “Darling, you’ve done a good job.”

Thursday, May 16th Sunny
This morning, on my way to school, my bicycle chain suddenly came off. I was standing helplessly by the roadside, and just as anxiety began to overwhelm me, a middle-aged stranger stopped. Without hesitation, he knelt down and fixed it for me. With skillful hands, he resolved the issue in just a few minutes.
In that moment, I realized how a simple act of kindness could brighten someone’s entire day. Not only did he save my morning, but he also inspired me to become someone who offers help readily.

Standing close to Pip, Leo held the box tightly and said, “No!” “I can’t let it go. It’s safe here with me. What if it gets hurt again ” he continued. His mom put a hand on his shoulder and said, “I understand your fear, son. But think about it — is keeping Pip in a box an act of love Or is the love about letting it go ” Leo looked at Pip, who was pecking at the window sometimes, and for the first time, he saw not a pet in a cage, but a creature gazing longingly at its true home—the vast sky. Leo took a deep breath and nodded. He put Pip in the box, and then took it to the park together with his mom.
Under the same tree where Pip had been found, Leo gently opened his hands. Pip hesitated for a moment, and then flew up to a low branch. It turned back, chirped softly as if saying thank you, and then flew higher and farther until it disappeared into the blue sky. Though a little sad, Leo felt peaceful in his heart. He realized that every life, no matter how small, deserves freedom and respect. True kindness means caring without holding on.
