(2025·昆明八中高二期末)“I have travelled the world for 25 years in search of trouble,”admits Dr. David Nott in his autobiography, War Doctor: Surgery on the Front Line. “It is a kind of addiction, a pull I find hard to resist.”This pull has seen him use his surgical skills to help those in need by taking unpaid, month- long breaks from his “day job” as an NHS surgeon in the UK every year to work in conflict zones and disaster areas.
He first worked in Sarajevo in 1993 as a volunteer with the French charity Médecins Sans Frontières. The hospital he worked in had so many holes in its walls caused by bombing and sniper fire that it was called the “Swiss Cheese Hospital”.It was his first insight into the terrifying reality of treating patients in a war zone. The hospital suffered power cuts during operations and he and his team were regularly shot at.
But Nott found this exhilarating.“Going to Sarajevo, almost getting killed, I had never felt so wonderful. I really felt as though somebody bad injected me with something. I think to skirt death—and then to realize how close you are to death and that you survive it—is exciting. And that's the experience I've had many times over.”
This attitude may seem reckless (鲁莽的), but it means that Nott has saved lives in desperate situations. In Gaza in 2014, he decided not to abandon a young girl in the middle of surgery despite being told that the hospital was about to be bombed. He carried on, no bombs fell and the girl survived. He has kept a photograph of them taken together three days later. In Yemen, he operated on the wife of a bomb- maker who had accidentally blown up his own house. Nott found a detonator (雷管) buried in her leg and had to carefully get rid of it before continuing the operation.

(2025·河南部分重点高中质量检测)Gettysburg National Military Park was established in 1895, 32 years after the deadly battle. Gettysburg is the most-visited of the Civil War battlefields.
Many visitors start their visit at the Gettysburg Museum of History. The museum has the world's largest collection of Civil War objects. It has more than 1 million items, from soldiers' private notebooks and uniforms to original maps of the battlefield. The museum also houses the Gettysburg Cyclorama(风景画幕), showing the final attack in the Battle of Gettysburg: Pickett's Charge. George Pickett was a Confederate general. On July 3, 1863, he led a charge against the stronger Union forces. It was a disaster for the Confederate troops.
French artist Paul Philippoteaux and a team of 20 artists created the painting in the 1880s. They visited the battlefield and it took more than one year for the huge painting to be complete. The cyclorama is 114 metres long and almost 13 metres tall. It has long been one of the most popular parts of the Gettysburg experience. But by the 1990s, the painting was in poor condition. Experts warned that if the cyclorama was not repaired, the paints could be lost.
A restoration project began in 2003. The cyclorama was cleaned and separated into its 14 parts, and later moved into the new centre. There, the original canvas (画布) was sewn onto new cloth made in China. Park service officials said China was one of the few countries able to produce cloth in the sizes needed. Then each part was hung and sewn together.
A team of cyclorama experts from Poland worked on the project in Gettysburg. The repair work of the Gettysburg Cyclorama marked one of the largest art conservation efforts ever in North America.
After the museum, tourists can visit the Soldiers' National Cemetery, where many of the Union soldiers who died during the Battle of Gettysburg are buried. The cemetery was dedicated on November 19, 1863, the same day President Lincoln gave his “Gettysburg Address”. Historians agree that Lincoln's “Gettysburg Address” defined Americans as a people who believed in freedom, democracy and equality.

Sharon Taylor has no firsthand memories of her father. The fighter pilot was shot down over Germany in April 1945, when Taylor was just three weeks old.One day when Taylor was seven, her grandmother shared stories about their fallen hero, her eyes welling up as she remembered her late son.“Nana, it's OK,” Taylor assured her. “I'll find him and bring him home.”
It was a promise Taylor, now a retired professor, would keep.Promoted by clues she pieced together from her parents' wartime letters—with help from military historians, eyewitnesses, and an excavation (发掘) team—Taylor concluded a multi-decade mission to recover her father's remains and bring him home.
In 1989, Taylor visited the potential crash site and connected with DPAA, which agreed to send a recovery team to find and identify any human remains. In 2005, the DPAA team, accompanied by Taylor, led a three week excavation.Taylor said that from the moment she set foot on the site, she could feel that her dad was there.DNA analysis confirmed that the remains were his.
On October 6, 2006, Taylor and her family buried her father's remains at Arlington National Cemetery.Beyond fulfilling her promise to her grandmother, Taylor said her mission had been to get closer to her father and his legacy.“I wanted to know the truth,” she said.“I wanted his memory and what he did to never be forgotten.”
She came to realize that she's not alone in her pursuit to know the truth about her father's death. There's an entire population of Americans who've lost loved ones in military conflicts overseas.Taylor shares her story widely, raising attention to soldiers who never return from war and the importance of recovery efforts.“Our reality was never,” Taylor says.“Our rights have been deprived (剥夺).I think it's hugely significant.”
Taylor will never know exactly what her father's final moments were like. But as she viewed the Expressions of America exhibition and saw his loving words to his “Angel Girls”, she felt, in a way, that he had finally come home.

(2025·河北正定中学高二月考)Anthony Doerr's bestseller, All the Light We Cannot See,holds special appeal for me. That's how I would describe it. From the poetic language, I realize what the title actually means—underneath the surface of history, there is light that has not been seen, and stories that have gone untold.
I'm going to be honest—love for this book didn't hit me straight away. In fact, my first attempt to read it last month ended with my putting it aside and going to find something easier, lighter and less descriptive to read. But this book is built on beautiful imagery in both the literal sense—the physical world of 1940s Paris and Germany, and the metaphorical sense—scientific and philosophical, references to light. It's a beautiful work of genius, but it does get a little complicated at times.
However, when we get into the meat of this World War Ⅱ novel, it's also an upsetting story of a childhood torn apart by war. It's about Parisian Marie -Laure who has been blind since she was six,and a German orphan called Werner who won himself a place at the center of an organization. Both of their stories are told with sensitivity and sympathy, each one forced down a path by their personal circumstances and by that destructive monster—war.
I think this is the kind of book you will never appreciate if you stop too soon—I learned that lesson. From the first to last page, there is a theme of invisible lines running parallel (平行的) to one another and sometimes, just sometimes, crossing in the strangest way. These two lives we are introduced to seem to be worlds apart, and yet they come together and influence one another. It was this, more than the predictably awful tale of war, that particularly stirred (激起) my emotions.

(2025·哈尔滨市三中校验收考试)In the late 1930s, people could donate blood, but very few hospitals could store it for later use. Whole blood breaks down quickly, and there were no methods at the time for safely preserving it. As a result, hospitals often did not have the appropriate blood type when patients needed it. Charles Drew, a surgeon and researcher, helped solve this monumental problem for medicine, earning him the title “Father of the Blood Bank”.
In 1938, while obtaining his doctorate in Philosophy, Drew became a fellow at Columbia University's Presbyterian Hospital in New York. He studied the storage and distribution of blood, including the separation of its components, and applied his findings to an experimental blood bank at the hospital.
As Drew was finishing his academic degree at Columbia, World War Ⅱ was erupting in Europe. Great Britain was asking the United States for desperately needed plasma (血浆) to help victims. Given his professionalism, Drew was selected to be the medical director of the Blood for Britain campaign. Using Presbyterian Hospital's blood bank as a model, Drew established uniform procedures for collecting blood and processing blood plasma from nine New York hospitals, thus making the hospitals' standards all the same. The five -month campaign collected donations from 15,000 Americans and was considered a success. His discoveries and his leadership saved countless lives.
With the increasing likelihood that the nation would be drawn into war, the United States wanted to capitalize on what Drew had learned from the campaign. The government appointed him as assistant director of a three -month pilot program to mass -produce dried plasma in New York, which became the model for the first Red Cross blood bank. His innovations for this program included mobile blood donation stations, later called bloodmobiles.

(2025·河南省豫南名校第二次质量检测)The United Kingdom hosted the AI Safety Summit, bringing politicians, computer scientists and big AI company leaders to a site chosen for its symbolism:Bletchley Park, the birthplace of computing and code breaking (密码破译).
During World War Ⅱ, a group of mathematicians, chess masters and other experts gathered at the Victorian country house 72 kilometers northwest of London to start a secret war against Germany. Their goal was to break a set of constantly changing codes produced by Germany's Enigma machine. To crack it, mathematician Alan Turing—building on work done by Polish code- breakers—developed the Bombe, a forerunner of modern computers. Later, Bletchley Park's wartime scientists developed Colossus, the first programmable digital computer. Some historians say cracking the code helped shorten the war by up to two years.
“It has oversimplified its true contribution to describe Bletchley Park as a playground for Turing and other scientists,”said historian Chris Smith, author of The Hidden History of Bletchley Park. “It fits into the romantic idea that a group of smart men with a bit of wool and some yards of wire can win the war. In fact, almost 10,000 people worked at Bletchley Park during the war. Three quarters of them were women. It was basically a factory...Twenty- four hours a day, seven days a week. When peace came, the code -breakers returned to civilian life and promised to keep their wartime work secret. It was not until the 1970s that the work at Bletchley Park became widely known in Britain.”
In 1994, the site opened as a museum, after local historians banded together to prevent it from being pulled down to build a supermarket. It was restored to its 1940s appearance, complete with old typewriters, phones and cups—including the one chained to a radiator (暖气片) in Hut 8, where Turing led the Enigma team.

A.It was invented by Germany.
B.It was designed to send secret messages.
C.Its goal was to produce the first computer.
D.Polish code -breakers also made a contribution to it.
解析:细节理解题。根据第二段中的“To crack it, mathematician Alan Turing...a forerunner of modern computers.”可知,数学家艾伦·图灵在波兰密码破译人员所做工作的基础上研发了Bombe,即波兰密码破译者也为Bombe的研发做出了贡献。

6.What did Chris Smith most probably imply
A.Women's hard work was overlooked.
B.The secret should not be kept for so long.

7.Why is the cup mentioned in the last paragraph
