Space engineer Barbara Braun is working to turn the dream of living on Mars into reality, starting in a remote part of
Utah, a place whose environment has much in common with that ofMars. As a mission officer, she leads missions that copy
life on Mars to test how humans can survive in space. Braun studied space engineering at MIT and also became a qualified
emergency medical worker — someone trained to give emergency medical care. This
skill later proved to be extremely valuable.
Her most important test was a two-week mission at Utah’s Mars Desert Research Station. As the health and safety
officer, she led explorations in simulated (模拟的) spacesuits, where her team tested technologies like 3D mapping drones
and radiation-detecting tools. The mission was full of challenges. The team had to deal with many unexpected problems from
broken spacesuits to a broken toilet. Solving such practical issues was a core part of the experience. “There’s no pipe repairer on
Mars,” she says, “so you need to be handy.”
Braun’s wide range of skills sets her apart. Her training as an emergency medical worker, combined with volunteer
work as a firefighter, helped her develop skills needed for space exploration: thinking quickly and staying calm in stressful
situations. She believes these practical experiences are as important as her school education. “These experiences prepared
me for the unexpected — on Earth and Mars,” she notes, highlighting the connection between her daily life and her space-
relatedwork.
Looking ahead, Braun acknowledges challenges like radiation but remains optimistic. She believes building a
community on Mars will require all kinds of people, not just scientists. “We need pipe repairers, metal workers, and everyday
people in space,” she says. To young space lovers, her advice is to read widely and try out different things with passion — you
never know which skill will prepare you for space. Through her work, Braun is helping to make humanity’s next space
homea reality.
24.WhydoesBarbaraBraun conduct herwork in a remote part ofUtah
A. It is available to humans.
B. It has advanced technology.
C. It has emergencymedical care
D. It has a similar environment toMars.
25.What does paragraph 2mainly talk about
A. The function ofUtah’sMarsDesert Research Station.
B. The advanced technologies tested in theMarsmission.
C. TheMars simulationmission and its tough difficulties.
D. The responsibilities of a health and safety officer in space.
26.What canwe learn fromBraun’s advice
A. Practicemakes perfect.
B.Booksare the ladder to success.
C. Many skills make light work.
D.Where there’s passion, there’s success.
27.Which of the followingwords can best describeBarbaraBraun
A. Passionate and all-round. B.Ambitious andgenerous.
C.Knowledgeable andmild. D. Specialized and conventional.

A dropped bag of chips disturbed a cave ecosystem in Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico. This cave is
almost cut off from the outside world, so introducing anything foreign can be harmful. “Things in the damp cave get wet
quickly,” says park guide Ashley. The snack attracts tiny organisms, causing unwanted growth. Soon,
small animals like crickets and spiders came to eat, spreading the pollution. Rangers found the bag within hours. “But that
can be all it takes,” says Ashley. “I’m sure some crickets got a bit of the snack.”
Over 500 million people visit American public lands each year, creating many chances to harm wild places. “When
you look at the numbers, it’s incredible,” says Watts, head of the Leave No Trace Center in Colorado, an organization
aimed atminimizing human impact on nature.
Food waste takes a long time to break down, especially in certain areas. “It takes much longer for an apple core to rot
in a desert than in a forest,” says Blye, a teacher at the University ofUtah. Leaving waste introduces animals to an unnatural
diet and changes their behavior with sometimes disastrous results. Bears who taste garbage and become a threat to humans may
have to be put down. “Bears can get used to unnatural food in three weeks,” saysWatts. “Everyone loses in this case.”
Biologicalwaste is also problematic.Dogwaste brings new bacteria into the ecosystem and scares away deer.Meanwhile,
humanwaste and toilet paper introduces dangerousbacteria intowater sources.
In national parks, trails (小路) are designed to avoid sensitive areas. Stepping off the trail, even for a quick photo,
can scare wildlife away. Impacts from many visitors result in long-term damage to nature and wildlife. But people don’t
think of that when they see the perfect photo opportunity. “It’s just such a hard thing to resist,” says Blye. The risk to
sensitive ecosystems isn’t obvious. “It’s easy to think, oh, there’s wildflowers over there. I shouldn’t step on that,” says
Blye, but these tiny ecosystems full of microscopic organisms essential to desert life provide many benefits, including
reducing the risk of erosion (侵蚀) and helping absorb rainfall, and can take hundreds of years to return to its original state.
28.What doesAshleymean by “But that can be all it takes.”
A. The rangers’work is efficient. B. The damage has been done.
C. The cleanup takes a long time. D. The pollution has spread widely.
29.What is a result of foreignwaste in public lands
A. A shift in animal behavior. B. A shortage of food supplies.
C. A decline in bacterial species. D. An increase in regional conflicts.
30.Why does thewritermentionwildflowers in paragraph 5
A. To praise their benefits to desert life.
B. To highlight our damage to ecosystems.
C. To stress their significance for photography.
D. To showour unawareness of nature’s sensitivity.
31.What shouldwedoaccording to the passage
A. Leave no trace in the wild B. Encourage wildlife protection
C. Promote national park tourism D.Restore ecological damage

With rows of sharp teeth andpowerful jaws, bull sharks are someof themost aggressive and dangerous sharks on the planet.
Despite their fearsome reputation, these massive creatures also seem to have a more sensitive side: Bull sharks form friendships
of sorts with other members of their species, just like humans, according to a study published in the journal Animal
Behaviour.
Marosi, a shark behavior researcher at the University of Exeter in England, and her colleagues spent six years observing
184 bull sharks — 33 males and 151 females — at the Shark Reef Marine Reserve. The creatures were either tagged or
identified via unique features, like scars, and were divided into three age categories: subadults (not sexually mature), adults, and
advanced adults (past reproductive age). Researchers swam among the sharks five times a week between 2018 and 2023,
making detailed notes about the way they socialized with one another and recording videos, during which they wrote down
momentswhen sharkswerewithin one body length of one another andwhen they swamalongsideorbehindeach other.
The data revealed that sharks seemed to prefer to associate closely with some individuals while actively avoiding
others. The most common interactions were among sharks of a similar size. Then, females were the most popular companions
among both sexes, the team also found. Meanwhile, adults were the most social and seemed to form the core of the social
network. Younger sharks likely avoid socializing to reduce the risk of attacks while older ones show reduced sociability
because social bondsbecome less critical to their survival, the researchers assume.
Overall, sharks are often thought of as lonely creature. But the findings add to the growing body of research suggesting
these creatures are quite varied. In addition to bull sharks, past research has suggested that other shark species may also have
complex social lives. Understanding these social interactions could help conservationists better protect sharks threatened by
climate change, overfishing, bycatch, pollution and other challenges.
32.What is a feature of the researchmethod
A. Focusing on a specific age group. B.Conducting three lab experiments.
C.Using immersive field observation. D.Measuring the body length accurately.
33.What canbe concluded about the social behavior of the sharks
A.They prefer to associatewith the opposite sex.
B.All age groups showequal social engagement.
C. Females secure a center place in socialnetwork.
D.Their social pattern is shapedby survival needs.
34.What is the significance of the research findings
A.They caution against the threats to sharks.
B. They guide efficient conservationmeasures.
C. They reveal varied categories ofbull sharks.
D. They confirm the popular belief about sharks.
35.Which of the following can be a best title
A. Bull Sharks: The Lonely Killers of the ocean
B. From Jaws to Friends: The Social Lives of Sharks

There’s just something about Labubu. You hear the sound ofopening a blind box, see that cheeky smile and
suddenly you’re attracted. But once the excitement fades, you can’t help butwonder, why dowe keep chasing more,
evenwhenwealreadyhaveenough
Evolutionary psychology gives us a fascinating answer. A lot of what we do comes from what once helped our ancestors
survive. 36 That could mean the difference between thriving (繁荣) and going without. Over generations, we’ve
beenwired to findjoy in havingmore thanwe require.
Labubu represents a modern form of this instinct (本能). The blind-box model mirrors ancestral uncertainty: investing
effort toward an uncertain payoff with the possibility of a rare, high-status “secret” find. The uncertainty of the reward
activates dopamine pathways in the brain 37 This explains why collectors sometimes keep buying long after they’ve
achieved their goal.
38 When collecting remains a source of joy and social connection, it can be adaptive. Many Labubu collectors
share mini furniture, and fan-made content. 39 But when over-marketing and rocketing resale prices step in, the
whole environment changes. Suddenly, it’s less about the joy of owning something you love and more about showing off or
reselling it for a profit.
In questioning whether hoarding is simply collecting gone mad, it becomes clear that human psychology hasn’ t
fundamentally changed. Social media, over-marketing, and resale culture supercharge ancient drives. The challenge is to
keep those drives in balance. 40 Ask yourself: Does it truly spark joy or creativity In the end, Labubu is more
than a toy. It’s a little mirror, reflecting both our ancient instincts and modern anxieties, and showing just how easily a fun
hobby can tip into full-blown craze.
A.Collectwhat brings genuine pleasure.
B. But how does collecting slip into disorder
C. Buyers don’t knowwhich figure they will get.
D.Back then, collectingwas about saving tools or food for later use.
E.Collecting becomes a problemwhenpossessions damageour daily life.
F. Itmakes us “want” the experience evenwhenwealready “have” enough.
G. Such are formsof self-expression that enrich rather thanmess up our life.

Mary was very happy when she got her dream part-time job at the local bookshop. It was right next to her school, so
she could walk there after classes. Her boss, Mr. Thompson, was very nice and trusted her with lots of important tasks from
the beginning.
One afternoon, Mr. Thompson gave Mary and her classmate Alex a special task. He wanted them to make a
plan to promote a new book series all written by teenagers. “This series is unique because it reflects the voices of young
authors,” Mr. Thompson explained, “I’m counting on you two to come up with something that will truly connect with
the young readers. You’ll have to finalize your plan before Friday since the school Reading Festival is just around the corner.”
Mary was very excited and happy to help. She nodded eagerly. “Absolutely, Mr. Thompson! I can’t wait to get started”
She was so thrilled that she couldn’t stop smiling, on her way home. Finally, there was a chance to show everyonewhat she
could do.
But working with Alex wasn’t going to be easy. Alex was known for being bossy and having strong opinions. When
Mary met up with him at the library to discuss their project, she knew it would be tough. “I’ve worked on similar projects
before, and simple booths (展位) in the school courtyard always work and we could hand out flyers” Alex said, without even
looking atMary.
Mary frowned as she thought aboutAlex’s idea. She knew that booths worked well, but she felt they could do something
more exciting to catch the attention of their classmates. The new book series deserved a special promotion. “If we just
follow the same old methods, how will this book series standout ” Mary argued. “What if we have a book reading session
with someauthors Or… ”
Alex, however, didn’t seem interested in exploring new ideas. He rolled his eyes at Mary’s suggestions for creativity,
arguing that they didn’t have the time or resources to try new things. He believed the usual methods wouldwork best.

Despite their different opinions, Mary tried to find a solution that both could agree on. _________________
