Today, teamwork is important in many fields (领域). Most people think the best way to build a great team is to bring together the most talented people. For example, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg once said one great engineer is as useful as a hundred common ones. Do you think this is always true Can more talents always help us do better
Animal scientist William Muir did an experiment with chickens. He chose some strong chickens that could lay many eggs. He kept them for a long time and made them Group A.He also used some common chickens as Group B.But the result was surprising. Chickens in Group A laid fewer eggs than those in Group B.They used too much energy competing (竞争) with each other. So they had little energy left to lay eggs.
This finding made scientists interested in studying teams. They did some studies on three sports: football, basketball and baseball. In football and basketball, teams worked better when there were some excellent players. But when more than 70% of the players were very good, the team did not do better. In fact, it did worse. However, things were different in baseball. More excellent players still made the team work better.
There are two reasons for this. First, in football and basketball, players must work together very well. If there are too many great players, they may care more about themselves than the team. This makes the team do worse. Second, when there are many great people in a group, some players may rely on (依赖) other teammates too much and not work hard.
In the end, it is not easy to build a great team just by choosing great members. We need a good balance. We need some excellent members. We also need good cooperation and strong teamwork. If we work together and try our best, we can turn our strength into real success.

The third year of junior high school is hard and busy. You may not have enough sleep. As we all know, being short of sleep is bad for health. What’s more, experts have found that it could let you have trouble making friends.
A study of a Tsinghua University research team showed people who don’t get enough sleep can be less willing to make friends. They are too tired to go out.
The researchers did a survey about 100 middle school students. When they had a good sleep at night, they could talk to strangers easily. When they stayed up late, all of them wanted to be alone in the next day.
Dr. Song, the leader of the team, said, “The less sleep you get, the fewer friends you will make. At the same time, people may think you are strange and stay away from you. This can make you feel lonely and cause you to sleep even less.”

Communication is the bridge between people. Good communication skills can help us get along well with family members, classmates and friends. However, many teenagers often have arguments and misunderstandings with people around them, which makes them feel lonely and sad. Learning correct ways to communicate is necessary for middle school students.
Many conflicts happen between teenagers and parents. Parents always hope children study hard and stay away from bad habits. They care about kids’ grades, daily safety and future development. But young people want more personal space and freedom. They hope parents can respect their hobbies and choices. Sometimes parents speak in a strict tone, teenagers will refuse to talk back. To solve this problem, children should take the initiative to share school stories with parents. When having different ideas, talk calmly instead of shouting angrily. Parents also need to listen to children’s true thoughts patiently.
Disagreements also appear among classmates and friends. We may have different opinions on group activities, sports games or class rules. Some students insist on their own ideas and refuse to accept others’ advice, which breaks friendship. When facing differences, we should learn to put ourselves in others’ shoes. Think about things from friends’ side, then we can understand each other better. Say polite words and give sincere suggestions properly. If you hurt your friend carelessly, bravely say sorry at once.
Besides daily talk, body language also plays an important role in communication. Smiling faces show kindness and friendliness. Eye contact means you are listening carefully. Nodding heads stand for agreement. Bad gestures and impatient expressions will make others uncomfortable. Avoid cold words and rude attitudes in daily communication.
No one can live alone in the world. Nice communication removes gaps between hearts. Mastering communication skills helps us build harmonious relationships and live a happier teenage life.

Nature is full of wonderful sights that never fail to amaze us. From the highest mountains to the deepest oceans, every natural wonder tells a story of nature’s power and beauty. Last year, I had the chance to visit two amazing natural wonders, and the experience changed my view of nature.
The first wonder I visited was the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. It is famous for its tall and strange rocks that stand straight in the forest. The rocks are covered with green plants, and when the mist comes, the park looks like a fairyland. I walked along the path and enjoyed the fresh air and beautiful scenery. I also saw many monkeys playing in the trees, which made the park full of life. This visit made me realize how beautiful and magical nature is.
The second natural wonder I visited was the Dead Sea. Unlike other seas, the Dead Sea is so salty that no fish can live in it. When you go into the water, you can float easily without swimming. My parents and I floated in the water and took many photos. I also learned that the Dead Sea has special minerals that are good for our skin. You probably remember the Flaming Mountains from Journey to the West. But do you know where the real Flaming Mountains are They are in Turpan (吐鲁番), in the east of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (新疆维吾尔自治区).
It’s known as one of the hottest areas in the world. The desert sand can be as hot as 80°C in mid-summer. That’s enough to make your feet burn! It may sound crazy, but the locals can cook an egg on the desert sand. Rainfall in Turpan is only 16 mm a year. It is one of the driest places in China. How do people survive in such a terrible climate The secret lies in the ancient karez system (坎儿井系统).
The karez system in Turpan includes more than 1,000 wells (井). They appear every 20-30 metres. Some of them are 100 metres deep! Under these wells are large underground canals (运河). Water from the mountains falls into the wells. It then runs underground in the canals. It is kept cool and safe from the desert heat. There are over 5,000 km of underground canals in the area. That’s nearly as long as the Yellow River! Thanks to the karez system, people can grow plants for food in this difficult environment. And amazingly, all of this was completed with only hand tools! No wonder it’s among the top three projects of ancient China.
Today, the area faces a water shortage (短缺). There is less water from the mountains, lower rainfall and a large increase in water use. Although modern technology is solving some problems, the karez system still plays an important role. Now, more and more young people are taking action to protect it. The centuries-old water system will surely be carried into the future.

In today’s fast-paced world, stress has become a common problem for people of all ages, especially teenagers. Many teenagers struggle with stress from school, exams, friendships, and family expectations. However, there are many effective ways to manage stress and live a healthier, happier life.
First, regular exercise is one of the best ways to reduce stress. When you exercise, your body releases endorphins, which are chemicals that make you feel happy and relaxed. Even a 30-minute walk, a game of basketball, or a yoga class can help you feel better. Exercise also helps you sleep better, which is important for managing stress.
Second, talking to someone you trust can also help. Whether it’s a parent, a friend, a teacher, or a counselor, sharing your feelings can help you feel less alone. Sometimes, just talking about your problems can help you see them in a different way and find solutions. Many schools also have counselors who are trained to help students deal with stress and other issues.
Third, practicing mindfulness and relaxation techniques can be very helpful. Mindfulness means paying attention to the present moment without judgment. You can practice mindfulness by meditating, doing deep breathing exercises, or just taking a few minutes to focus on your surroundings. Relaxation techniques like progressive muscle relaxation or guided imagery can also help you calm down and reduce stress.
Fourth, taking care of your body is also important. Eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, and avoiding caffeine and sugar can help you manage stress. When your body is healthy, you are better able to handle stress. It’s also important to take breaks from school and technology. Spending time outdoors, reading a book, or doing a hobby you enjoy can help you relax and recharge.

In a world where social media is part of daily life, Australia has made a historic decision: it is the first country to ban (禁令) children under 16 from having social media accounts. This new law came into force on December 10, 2025, and it has drawn much attention around the globe.
The government says the rule is to keep teenagers safe online. Everyone knows that young people may face many risks when using social media. For example, some algorithms are designed to make users spend more time on the apps, which can be addictive. Besides, cyberbullying often hurts teens’ feelings, and there are even dangerous people who try to harm them online. The new law aims to stop all these bad things.
Big social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok have to check users’ ages strictly. If they don’t shut down accounts of under-16 users, they may have to pay a fine of up to 49.5 million Australian dollars. Most platforms agree to follow the rule, but X, the app that used to be called Twitter, thinks the ban limits people’s free speech.
Not all apps are included in the ban. Some useful or kid-friendly ones like WhatsApp, YouTube Kids and Roblox are still allowed. The government says this list might change as new apps become popular.
Parents are mostly happy with the ban, as they worry less about their children’s online safety. However, critics have different ideas. They say teenagers might just move to other platforms with less regulation. It’s like playing a “whack-a-mole”game—when you hit one mole, another pops up, bringing new risks.

Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia was set up in 1949 and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It covers over 296 square kilometres and is visited by almost two million people a year. Its name comes from the Croatian word for “shallow” because of its unusual shallow lakes.

“I don’t want to go to school, Mum. I feel a bit sick.” “If you have a school problem, just tell me. When I was a little girl, sometimes some boys called me terrible names.” Ollie looked up and asked, “Why did they do that ” “Some children could be unkind, especially if they don’t feel good about themselves. Is that your problem ” It took Ollie a long time to reply. “Yes, it is. They call me Mini-Me, just because I’m a bit small. And two boys often push me around... and it hurts.”
Mum asked, “Did you tell your teacher ” “No. That would make things worse.” “Bullying is wrong, Ollie. Maybe we can talk to your teacher together.” Ollie thought for a long time and finally decided to have a try.
Ollie and her mum met up with Ollie’s teacher after school, with nobody around. The teacher was glad that Ollie told her all about it.

Every year wildfires burn down tens of thousands of square kilometres of forest. People lose their homes. Some get hurt or even die. Smoke jumpers play an important role in fighting against these fires.
Firemen usually work together to save people in places on fire, like a burning apartment or factory. But smoke jumpers are special firemen. They work in places that are hard to reach, like in the mountain forests. They get there by jumping from planes. When arriving, smoke jumpers first look around the land and make a plan to stop the fire. They use axes to cut down dead trees. They bring water with them too, but not a lot.
Although most smoke jumpers are men, more women are joining the team. To become a smoke jumper, they must meet some physical requirements (要求). In the USA, for example, they need to weigh between 54 kg and 91 kg. So strong winds can’t blow them away. Smoke jumpers also need to know how to live in the wild, like finding food in the forest.
The job is dangerous and tiring, but many smoke jumpers enjoy it. Alexi Tishin, a Russian smoke jumper, said, “This is the best job for tough people.” For these firemen, smoke jumping is more than a job — it’s a way of life.
