North America's birds are disappearing from the skies at a rate that's shocking even to ornithologists (鸟类学家).Since the 1970s, the continent has lost 3 billion birds, nearly 30% of the total, and even common birds such as sparrows and blackbirds are in decline, U.S. and Canadian researchers report this week online in Science. The findings raise fears that some familiar species could go the way of the passenger pigeon, a species once so abundant that its extinction in the early 1900s seemed unthinkable.
The results, ever done to North American birds, point to ecosystems in disorder because of habitat loss and other factors, researchers say. Yet ecologist Paul Ehrlich at Stanford University, California sees some hope in this new bad news: “It might encourage needed action in view of the public interest in our feathered friends.”
In past decades, Ehrlich and others have recorded the decline of particular bird groups, including migratory songbirds. All together, they studied 529 bird species, about three-quarters of all species in North America, accounting for more than 90% of the entire bird population. Rosenberg and his colleagues report grassland birds have declined by 53% since 1970—a loss of 700 million adults in the 31 species studied. Habitat loss may be to blame.
The familiar birds that flock by the thousands in suburbs were not exempt (获豁免的).“There's a decline of the number of common birds,” Rosenberg says. His team determined that 19 common species have each lost more than 50 million birds since 1970.Twelve groups, including sparrows, warblers, finches, and blackbirds, were particularly hard hit. Even introduced species that have increased in North America, such as starlings and house sparrows, are losing ground.

(2025·天津河西区期中)My doctor took me for a walk around the farm where she lives. I was physically and emotionally exhausted and discouraged by anxiety and depression.
The place was full of life. There were insects, horses, rabbits and a cat. She told me to focus on my body in the environment.
When I was ill, I tended to retreat into my mind and disconnect from the here and now. So, when I met a horse named Fira, I expected nothing.
As I got closer to Fira, she nuzzled (用鼻子轻轻摩擦) my chest, putting gentle pressure over my heart. Something happened inside me: I felt as if I had reached a wellspring (源泉) of past hurts, fears and failures. I began to melt emotionally.
I patted Fira's nose and breathed in her smell. I found I didn't have to concentrate on feeling better; Fira helped me feel loved and safe.
I worked with Fira often, learning basic communication and leading methods to work together with her. Initially, I wasn't sure exactly what one would do with a horse except riding it. But I knew that Fira had touched me in an uncommon way and had made me feel better. She connected with me by reacting to my emotional state and reflecting it back to me in an open, affectionate way.
In my meetings with Fira, I found that I lost my usual self-consciousness and I would focus entirely on communicating.
I learned to live in the present, to focus on what was happening this day, at this moment, in this place. I learned to forget the past, with all its hurts. I learned to forget the future, which hasn't happened yet. When you stand beside a horse, you exist completely in the moment.
With Fira by my side, I saw into a life in which trust comes first, and compassion follows.
I found a deep peace in leading her along a path, by using my own power of intention to indicate whether to start, stop, turn left or turn right. I felt inner quiet and even joy. My work with this horse was part of a journey out of a very dark night in my soul.

(2025·湖州期中教学质检)There's some talk of building settlements on the Moon or Mars to help make sure humanity survives long into the future.Others have their sights set closer to home:on future cities under the ocean.
“Technologically speaking, it is absolutely possible to colonize (移民于) the bottom of the sea,”says Fabien Cousteau,a well-known ocean explorer who once spent 31 days living in what is now the world's only functioning undersea habitat, Aquarius. It's about the size of a school bus and located 62 feet below the ocean surface off the Florida Keys.
Just as astronauts test what it will be like to live in space, aquanauts try out undersea living with an eye on the future.Escaping from disasters such as climate change, wars, or pandemics is one reason to live under the sea.Others include studying, exploring, or appreciating the ocean. It's costly and expensive to constantly keep up an ocean habitat which must pump or make its own air, electricity, and fresh water. Inhabitants have to deal with high pressure. And infections can develop rapidly due to high humidity (湿度).
Despite the challenges, several new ocean habitats and cities are under construction.A series of undersea living quarters like space stations for aquanauts called Proteus is scheduled to be completed off Curacao, an island in the north of Venezuela in South America. An undersea colony called Vent Base Alpha will be built near a hydrothermal vent (热液孔), which will supply it with energy.Meanwhile, an undersea city called Ocean Spiral in Japan will link its surface to the deep sea, using the difference in pressure to generate energy and produce fresh water. This sounds amazing, but it will be extremely expensive and remain just a design.
Not everyone agrees that building homes in the ocean is a good idea. This type of development could place even more pressure on ecosystems that are already struggling with pollution and climate change. It's important to make sure that any construction is done carefully, says Susanne Menden-Deuer, an oceanographer at the University of Rhode Island. She says wild undersea habitats should be treated as “the precious, irreplaceable resource that they are”.

(2025·东北育才学校月考)Wildlife populations around the world are facing dramatic declines, according to new figures that have led environmental campaigners to call for urgent action to rescue the natural world. The 2022 Living Planet Index (LPI), produced by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), reveals that studied populations of mammals, birds, reptiles (爬行动物) and fish have seen an average decline of 69 per cent since 1970, faster than previous predictions. The LPI tracked global biodiversity between 1970 and 2018, based on the monitoring of a population of 31,821 of 5,230 vertebrate (脊椎动物)
species. Mark Wright of WWF says the degree of decline is destructive and continues to worsen. “We are not seeing any really positive signs that we are beginning to bend the curve of nature,” he says.
Freshwater vertebrates have been among the hardest-hit populations, with monitored populations showing an average decline of 83 per cent since 1970. The Amazon River Dolphin, for example, has experienced a 65 per cent decline in its population between 1994 and 2016. Meanwhile, some of the most biodiverse regions of the world are seeing the steepest falls in wildlife, with the Caribbean and central and south America seeing average wildlife population declined by 94 per cent since 1970. Habitat loss and reduction is the largest driver of wildlife loss in all regions around the world, followed by species over exploitation by hunting, fishing or poaching (偷猎).
In December, 2022, governments from around the world gathered in Montreal, Canada, for COP15, a much-delayed summit that aims to agree on a set of new targets intended to prevent the loss of animals, plants and habitats globally by 2030. “This is a once-in-a-decade opportunity that's coming up,”says Robin Freeman of the ZSL. He says it is crucial that governments use the summit to agree on “meaningful, well measurable targets and goals”. “We need governments to take actions to ensure that those goals deal with the complicated combined threats of climate change and biodiversity, in order for us to see a meaningful action,” says Freeman. But some researchers are critical of the LPI's use of a headline figure of decline, warning it is easy to be misunderstood.
The findings don't mean all species or populations worldwide are in decline. In fact, it is estimated that approximately half the populations show a stable or increasing trend, and half show a declining trend. “I think a more appropriate and useful way to look at it is to focus on specific species or populations,” says Hannah Ritchie at Our World in Data. But Wright says the LPI is a useful tool that reflects the findings of other biodiversity indicators. “All of those show they all scream that there is something going really very badly wrong,” says Wright.

(2025·安徽皖江名校联考)With needle-like teeth and a sharp pointed nose, a gray nurse shark isn't a creature that most people would want to meet. But Shalise Leesfield isn't one of them.
[综合能力提升练]
The Australian teenager couldn't think of a better creature to meet when scuba-diving off the coast of South West Rocks, near her home in Port Macquarie, a coastal town north of Sydney.
“Many people say gray nurse sharks look terrifying, but I think they are the sweetest animals ever,” she says.
The slow-moving sharks, which like to stay near the seafloor in warm, shallow waters, are—for the most part—harmless to humans. But the gray nurse shark is under threat. Populations have fallen and habitats have been lost due to ocean warming and human development, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which lists the species as seriously endangered.
One area where they can still be seen is Fish Rock Cave, an underwater cavern (大洞穴) with a unique ecosystem, 40 miles up the coast from Leesfield's home. But fishers are allowed access within 200 meters of Fish Rock Cave. This is leading to a drop in the number of gray nurse sharks and increasing pollution, says Leesfield. She wants to enlarge the no-fishing area, establishing a protected zone.
With Leesfield's efforts, the area has been nominated as a Hope Spot, which is part of the Mission Blue program launched by famous oceanographer Sylvia Earle that identifies places as critically important to the ocean's health and supports protection.
“When people think about Hope Spots, they think about Sydney Harbour or the Great Barrier Reef. So to get Fish Rock Cave up on that list is just such incredible news,” she says.
Now, Leesfield is working with politician Cate Faehrmann, marine spokesperson for the Australian Greens Party in New South Wales, to legalize protection of the sharks and make the no-fishing zone protected by the law.

(2025·长沙南雅中学校联考期中)Within the next 30 years, urban expansion is due to result in up to 1.53 million square kilometers of newly urbanized land, directly threatening 855 species, according to the findings of a new Yale-led study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The study identified hotspot cities that are expected to have particularly large impacts on species habitats. Many of these cities are in equatorial (赤道的) regions where urban growth is in line with biodiverse habitats. The cities that present the greatest threat to species due to expansion are mostly located in the developing regions of sub-Saharan Africa, South America, Mesoamerica, and Southeast Asia.
The study relied on data from Yale's Map of Life—a collection of species distribution (分布) data used to monitor, research, and create policies that protect species worldwide. It also used recently developed land-use plans to estimate future habitat loss from urban land expansion for more than 30,000 species globally. It found that urban land expansion is a significant driver of habitat loss for about one-third of these.
This study throws light on the need for global protection efforts to include policies to preserve species in urban lands. “Cities are actually part of the solution,” said co-author Karen Seto. “We can build cities differently than we have in the past. They can be biodiversity centers and save land for nature.”
“We are at a vital moment when the world's governments are reconsidering their commitments to Convention on Biological Diversity. This study is important since it lets us quantify (量化), for the first time, which specific species are most threatened by urban growth and where urban protected areas are needed to preserve them,” said co-author Robert McDonald.
“Despite the risk of species loss from land expansion, the study highlights how cities can proactively protect biodiversity,” Seto said. “The majority of these places have yet to be built. Science-driven policies that guide how the cities of tomorrow get built will have an enormous effect.”
