Save Sea turtles!
In 1980, scientists put the total number of global sea turtles at around 6 million. Over the following decades, researchers began to notice changes in the numbers recorded at many nesting (筑巢) areas. Nesting surveys in Florida showed that number has remained largely unchanged, with 110,122 loggerhead turtle nests recorded in 2024. However, at several other major nesting sites, annual counts have fallen into just tens of thousands. At some smaller beaches, only 2,000 to 3,000 turtles are recorded in a whole nesting season.
Why Are They Endangered
In many coastal waters, plastic bags, bottles, and other waste can often be seen floating (漂浮) in the sea. Sea turtles sometimes mistake these objects for food. After eating them, the turtles may become weak or unable to survive. Changes have also appeared on the beaches where turtles lay their eggs. Female turtles usually choose quiet and dark places along the coast. However, many of these beaches now have hotels, bright lights, and busy tourist activities. When baby turtles finally leave their nests, the lights from buildings may lead them away from the ocean.
What Is Being Done
In recent years, people have begun paying closer attention to sea turtles. During nesting seasons, some beaches are protected so that turtle eggs remain unaffected. Researchers also study the movements of sea turtles in order to better understand their long migrations and protect their habitats.
Sea turtles have lived in the oceans for millions of years. It is high time that we took action to protect them and keep our oceans safe and clean.

Maya had always been the type who planned everything. She kept color-coded calendars and believed that hard work could control any outcome. This approach served her well through high school — her grades were excellent, and her future seemed clearly mapped out.
Then came the ice storm. It hit on a Sunday evening in February, when Maya was going over her study schedule. The wind roared outside, and within an hour, tree branches crashed down across the neighborhood. The lights went out, enveloping the house in sudden darkness. Maya fell silent, then stormed out of the room. She had been ready to spend the evening going through math problems, and the unexpected cutoff had broken her carefully arranged plan.
Her mother lit candles while her father searched for the radio. Cut off from Wi-Fi and mobile service, the family sat together in the living room. Maya’s younger brother suggested they tell stories, something they had not done together in years. Though unwilling at first, Maya listened as her parents shared memories from their own childhoods — moments she had never known before. When it was Maya’s turn, she talked about a summer camp she had joined years ago. She described the girl who taught her to take a boat, the night they lay watching shooting stars, and the lightness of being free from busy schedules. As she spoke, she realized how seldom she let herself hold onto moments that could never be planned.
The power stayed off for three days. Maya did not open a single textbook. Instead, she played board games with her brother and discovered that her father knew every word to songs from the 1980s. She also spent long hours by the window, watching ice turn the familiar streets into something strangely beautiful.
When the electricity finally returned, Maya did not hurry back to her old habit. Something inside her had changed. She had come to see that life’s unexpected breaks were not always losses. Sometimes they were chances to notice what she had been too busy to see.
24. What can we know about Maya from paragraph 1
A. She was unwilling to try new things.
B. She preferred to live a well-organized life.
C. She was easy to get satisfied with small gains.
D. She cared little about her school performance.
25. How did Maya feel about the power cut at first
A. Annoyed. B. Confused. C. Relieved. D. Frightened.
26. What happened during the three days without power
A. Maya stuck to her study plan as usual.
B. Maya cleared the ice-covered streets outside.
C. The family spent some quality time together.
D. The family made up many interesting stories about kids.
27. What quality has Maya most probably developed through this experience
A. Responsibility. B. Independence. C. Determination. D. Adaptability.
【答案】24. B 25. A 26. C 27. D

Cancelled plans — especially a meeting at work — often feel like an unexpected gift. Even if it is only an hour, receiving a message that a meeting has been cancelled can bring a strong sense of freedom. But why does this happen Researchers believe that unexpectedly getting time back can change our psychological perception (心理感知) of time, which then influences how we choose to spend it.
Gabriela Tonietto, a researcher at Rutgers University, explored this question in a study published in the Journal of the Association for Consumer Research. Tonietto studies time management and how people respond to busy schedules. Her earlier research examined issues such as over-scheduling and the feeling that people never seem to have enough time. In the new study, Tonietto and her co-workers focused on what happens when people suddenly gain time, which they call “windfall time”. The research team carried out seven surveys involving more than 2,300 participants from universities and online platforms.
The first four surveys asked participants to compare unexpected free time, such as a cancelled meeting, with free time that had already been planned. The results showed that a gained hour often feels longer than a normal free hour. According to the researchers, this happens because people compare the gained time with the expectation of having no free time at all. This comparison makes the extra time feel more noticeable and valuable.
The researchers also examined how people use this windfall time. In the remaining surveys, participants reported their intended or actual behavior when they suddenly had more time available. Many people preferred to do things that demanded more time than usual. For example, someone with an unexpected free hour might start a longer task or walk to a coffee shop instead of quickly getting a drink nearby.
Tonietto suggests that understanding how people view gained time may help organizations design more flexible (灵活的) schedules. However, when free time appears suddenly, people are often more likely to relax rather than fix attention on work.
28. How does the author introduce the topic of the text
A. By quoting a famous psychologist. B. By describing a common phenomenon.
C. By stressing the importance of freedom. D. By presenting a tough scientific question.
29. What makes an unexpected free hour feel longer
A. The low expectation of daily work tasks.
B. The poor psychological perception of time.
C. The good mood brought by unexpected gifts.
D. The difference between expectation and reality.
30. What will people do with the “windfall” time according to the new study
A. Manage household affairs. B. Make plans for future schedules.
C. Finish small tasks at hand quickly. D. Choose activities that take longer.
31. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Flexible schedules are hard to carry out.
B. People may waste unexpected free time.
C. Sudden free time may lower work focus.
D. Companies object to changing work plans.
【答案】28. B 29. D 30. D 31. C

A well-designed theater requires far more than simply putting in a stage and seating inside a huge room. The best theaters are carefully built using a mix of materials that address spatial considerations while maximizing the overall sound. But as a study published today in The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America suggests, there is another factor that often affects how much you enjoy a show.
“Our feeling about a room’s sound comes from many sides,” said Stefan Weinzierl of Technical University of Berlin. The key is how we feel about a theater, and not necessarily its measurable sound qualities. In addition to reverberation (混响) and timbre (音色), the theater’s appearance also influences how we understand the sound we hear. “A hall can appear warm, or it can appear bright or metallic in sound,” Weinzierl continued.
To illustrate this phenomenon, Weinzierl’s team asked volunteers to experience concerts in various theaters — but with a catch. Given the challenge of moving participants around many locations, the team broadcast the performances to the volunteers on virtual reality (VR) headsets. Each person then watched four shows in 12 different theaters featuring various combinations of color and brightness. To increase the realism, the VR headsets changed the sound by itself when people moved their heads.
Following each concert, volunteers rated them based on enjoyment, timbre, reverberance and strength. The results were clear. There was a clear correlation between a music hall’s visuals and the perceived timbre of songs. Brighter or cooler colors like blue and green made the sound feel “colder.” Darker theaters also often increased how much a participant liked the music they heard. At the same time, there was no change in perceived volume (音量) depending on coloration — a finding supported by past studies.
The study’s authors said that while theater designers should still focus on making the sound great, these visual signs warrant important considerations.
“All the money that is spent for making a concert hall sound well — I think it should not be overlooked that the visual appearance makes its contribution to the sound of the hall,” added Weinzierl.
32. What affects people’s feeling about a theater’s sound besides sound qualities
A. The size of the stage. B. The look of the theater.
C. The number of viewers. D. The time of the concert.
33. What can be inferred about the VR headsets used in the experiment
A. They made the experiment more practical to conduct.
B. They were used to replace traditional seats in real halls.
C. They offered a more realistic experience than real theaters.
D. They helped researchers control the volunteers’ movements.
34. What does the underlined word “warrant” in paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Explain. B. Require. C. Observe. D. Benefit.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. How to Build an Excellent Theater
B. How to Improve Concert Sound Quality
C. Visuals Affect People’s Listening Experience
D. Virtual Reality Helps Test Stage Show Effects

My husband’s company promoted him and relocated us to New York City. Our first order of business was to find a safe, affordable place to live. I refused to live in a crowded part of the city, so we compromised (妥协) and agreed to move to Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, which was a quiet residential neighborhood in the southwest corner of New York.
I loved our sixth-floor apartment. It was quiet and close to the subway, making life in the city convenient. Soon after settling in, I found a job as an administrative assistant at a famous advertising agency. I had studied English education and dreamed of being a teacher, but I took the job for its good pay.
The work was boring and tiring. I typed letters, answered phones, organized meetings and arranged travel every day. I just watched the clock, waiting for breaks and the end of work. Many documents on my desk had clear grammar and spelling mistakes, but I never corrected them. I thought it was not my duty and I only needed to do what I was paid to do. I felt my job was tiny and meaningless.
One day, I complained (抱怨) about my job to my grandma. She was a wise and brave woman who had joined a women’s rights march and believed in fighting for what was right. She listened quietly, then said gently, “Honey, don’t just do enough to get by. Always do your best. Whatever you do, put your whole heart into it.”
She told me to correct the mistakes if I noticed them and to show my real ability. Her words hit me deeply. I decided to change myself completely. From that day on, I took every task seriously and tried my best to do it perfectly.
My co-workers and boss soon noticed my hard work and my good English skills. They praised me and planned to offer me a better position. Just then, a high school English teaching position opened up. It was exactly what I had been dreaming of.
注意:(1)词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Without a second thought, I applied for the teaching position.

____________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Without a second thought, I applied for the teaching position. I felt a little nervous but also confident, because my grandma’s words encouraged me to show my real ability. During the interview, I told the principal about my love for English and my dream of becoming a teacher. I also shared the lesson my grandma had taught me — to always do my best in whatever I did. The principal listened carefully and asked me several questions. A few days later, I received wonderful news: I had been offered the job. I was so excited that I could hardly believe it. My dream had finally come true.
My grandma’s words guided me in my teaching job from then on. I worked hard and put my whole heart into every class. I carefully prepared my lessons and patiently helped students when they had difficulties. I also joined different school activities and tried to do everything well. Gradually, my students began to enjoy my classes, and my work was highly praised by the school. Although my grandma is no longer with me, I still remember her advice. Her simple words changed my attitude toward work and led me to the career I truly love.
