When Jack, my husband, and I drove past a fire station with a sign reading, “Are you ready for the next storm ” Our area had just been in the path of Hurricane Irma, causing downed trees and outages. We were stuck in the dark and cut off from the outside world.
We have had our share of storms in the past years — a snowstorm and other heavy snows that knocked down trees, sometimes up to a week at a time. Those days in a cold house weren’t fun, but we learned so much from those early storms, things that made later storms easier to bear.
Now we have stored up flashlights, lanterns and candles. We bought a battery-operated radio to keep up with the news. We stocked up on batteries so that we’d have plenty for extended power failures. We make sure our grill (烤架) is ready and its tank is full, and we purchase food that can be easily prepared and then cooked or heated on the grill. And we don’t forget to buy emergency chocolate! We have book lights to read in the dark. We keep our car gas tanks full and have emergency cash on hand.
We’re ready for the next storm, but we wouldn’t have learned to do all those things if we hadn’t encountered a storm in the past. The same is true spiritually. Those little storms in our lives are never fun, but they prepare us for the big storms — the big trials — that will come our way. They can teach us some valuable lessons.
Are you ready for the next storm Now is the time to get ready, not when the storm arrives.
4. Which can replace the underlined word “outages” in paragraph 1
A. Traffic accidents. B. Power failures. C. Natural disasters. D. Bad weather.
5. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. The importance of storing up daily goods. B. The experience of dealing with housework.
C. The items the author bought for her daily life. D. The preparations the author made for emergency.
6. What does the author think of experiencing the past storms
A. It was instructive. B. It was satisfactory. C. It was unbearable. D. It was destructive.
7. What can we learn from the author’s story
A. Strike while the iron is hot. B. Take precautions before it is too late.
C. Kill two birds with one stone. D. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.
【答案】4. B 5. D 6. A 7. B

Here is an astonishing and significant fact: Mental work alone can’t make us tired. It sounds absurd. But a few years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the human could labor without reaching a stage of fatigue(疲劳). To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all! If we took a drop of blood from a day laborer, we could find it full of fatigue toxins(毒素) and fatigue products. But if we took blood from the brain of Albert Einstein, it would show no fatigue toxins at the end of the day.
So far as the brain is concerned, it can work as well and swiftly at the end of eight or even twelve hours of efforts as at the beginning. The brain is totally tireless. So what makes us tired.
Some scientists declare that most of our fatigue come from our mental and emotional(情感的) attitudes. One of England’s most outstanding scientists. J. A. Hadfield, says, “The greater part of the fatigue from which we suffer is of mental origin. In fact, fatigue of purely physical origin is rare.” Dr. Brill, a famous American scientist, goes even further. He declares, “One hundred percent of the fatigue of a sitting worker in good health is due to emotional problems.”
What kinds of emotions make sitting workers tired Joy Satisfaction No! A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry, a feeling of not being appreciated---those are emotions that tire sitting workers. Hard work by itself seldom causes fatigue. We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body.
8. What surprised the scientists a few years ago
A. Fatigue toxins could hardly be found in a labour’s blood.
B. Albert Einstein didn’t feel worn out after a day’s work.
C. The brain could work for many hours without fatigue.
D. A mental worker’s blood was filled with fatigue toxins.
9. According to the author, which of the following can make sitting worker tired?
A. Challenge mental work.
B. Unpleasant emotions.
C. Endless tasks.
D. Physical labor.
10. What’s the author’s attitude towards the scientists’ ideas
A. He agrees with them.
B. He doubts them
C. He argues against them.
D. He hesitates to accept them.
11. We can infer from the passage that in order to stay energetic, sitting workers need to ______.
A. have some good blood
B. enjoy their work
C. exercise regularly
D. discover fatigue toxin
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. A 11. B

Davey’s new game
Davey was in middle school. He enjoyed kicking the ball around, swimming, riding his bike, and running about in the playground with his friends. But then his birthday arrived.
For his birthday, Davey had asked for a new electronic game, one that he’d heard some kids talking excitedly about. He was a well-behaved child, so his parents were glad to realize his wish. However, from the moment he received the game, everything changed.
Davey loved the brightness of the display and the loud, integrated sounds. As soon as he switched on the device, his eyes lit up, his fingers stuck to the controller, and his ears stopped hearing external sounds.
“Davey, wanna go out and play ” asked his little brother, holding a football.
“No thanks, maybe later...” Davey answered automatically, without tearing his eyes away from the flashing screen.
“But Davey, all our friends will be there and take some photos together,” his brother insisted. Davey didn’t even respond anymore. So his brother left alone to join their friends.
Outside, the kids kicked the ball back and forth and had loads of fun. Davey, on the other hand, spent the whole afternoon curling up on the sofa with all his attention focused on the game. Only when the battery died and the controller stopped working did he wake up from his state of fascination. He then realised it was already dark outside.
The next morning, the game tempted (诱惑) Davey again. He resisted briefly, but soon gave in. When his brother invited him to swim, Davey just shook his head. So once again, his brother went on his own to join their friends. And how they enjoyed themselves! Davey, on the other hand, was still caught in the glow of the display screen, and only came out of its spell when the game was over. It was late at night again.
A new morning meant a new fight. He resisted for a bit longer, but again lost the battle. He played his game non-stop of course. When Davey put his game away that day, he felt burnt out.

【答案】Then he noticed some photos on the table, and his mum must have left them there. His heart ached as he looked through them. They were of his brother and friends, their faces beaming as they kicked the ball and jumped into the pool. Davey froze there, feeling annoyed with himself. He could have made some wonderful memories with them together. At that moment, his mum entered the room. “I know the game must be fun. But you’ve seen what happens when you forget about everything else. How about putting it away for a few days ” suggested his mum. Davey immediately agreed. He grabbed the components, locked them in a drawer and left the key with his mum. “There, no game is going to steal my playtime with my brother and my friends!” he exclaimed in a determined voice.
The next morning, Davey looked at the drawer where he locked the game with mum’s help. It was as if the spell had been broken! Davey was ready for the brand new day ahead. “Good morning!” Davey greeted his brother eagerly. “And what are we going to do today ” His brother widened his eyes in surprise. “So does this mean you’ll finally be joining us Wow!” and he whistled his loudest whistle. “Then let’s go into the woods and build a fort!” The two brothers enjoyed a fantastic day in the forest together with their friends. The sun shone on their heads, the wind brushed against their faces, and they laughed even harder than usual. When evening came, Davey flopped onto his bed and fell fast asleep, feeling thoroughly content, full of new memories and experiences. And he couldn’t wait to see what kinds of excitement tomorrow would bring.
