(2025·郑州高一检测)Kristin Schell is the founder of The Turquoise Table, a movement of ordinary people who want to create community right in their own front yards.Ten years ago, she and her family moved to a new home in Austin, Texas.
One day, Kristin tried to connect with her new neighbors by hosting a party. She bought a few picnic tables but the delivery driver set one table down in her front yard by mistake.“After the party, I painted the table turquoise—my favorite color—and put it in the front yard, just a few feet from the sidewalk,” she says.
That turquoise table became the place where Kristin and her kids hung out. They played games, did crafts and ate snacks.“We got intentional about where we spent our time,” Kristin says.“We became ‘front yard people’.”
Neighbors began to stop by to introduce themselves and sit down for a chat.Kristin invited people to join her at the table for coffee or iced tea. Then neighbors asked Kristin if their family could put a picnic table in their front yard too.A movement was born.“It was a simple way to slow down and connect with others,” she says. The turquoise table was inviting and had a shared feel.
People often hesitate to invite others into their homes. They think their house is too messy, it's not big enough or they don't have enough time.“Our perfectionism can cause us to miss out on the joy of connecting with others,” Kristin says. Her picnic table takes away the excuses—and the pressure.
She likes how it enables her to take a small step toward easing loneliness and building relationships in her community.“People's greatest need is to know that they are loved and that they belong,” she says.
A decade after their Texas beginnings, thousands of Turquoise Tables exist in all 50 states and in 13 countries around the world. Not all of them are actually turquoise.“No matter what color it is, it's a friendship table,” Kristin says.

(2025·河南名校大联考)People often talk about cultural differences between Western and Eastern countries, but how about the Western world itself?Surprisingly,a closer look at it can reveal a good many curious details.
The most obvious characteristic of the majority of Americans is that they smile a lot.It does not matter whether they have a strong reason to smile;they do it,sometimes simply because they have to.A smile is not just a powerful marketing tool but also a way to show that someone is friendly, and that life in general is fine. Europeans, on the contrary, prefer to keep a more neutral (不露声色的) facial expression. They smile mostly when they are in a good mood,or feel amused;if not,a European's face will remain neutral,or even dull.In Russia, for example, there is a proverb saying that laughing for no reason is a sign of a fool.It does not mean that Europeans are serious, or that they do not have a sense of humor.
The same refers to communication in general.Americans are extremely communicative;small talk and chats are common.Europeans talk mostly when there is something to say, and rarely enter communication just for the purpose of talking to other people.American people prefer to express what they think carefully, considering how it might affect surrounding people.Europeans are more straightforward, even with unfamiliar people. European friends will almost always voice their opinions on different occasions, and will not hesitate to remind you that you need to lose some weight or take a shower.
It can be said that Americans are people of contrasts. They are open minded, flexible, and ready to accept everything new enthusiastically;but at the same time,American society manages to bring up unbelievable conservatives.Americans are extremely politically correct, which,in most cases, is indeed a secure and beneficial practice, but it can also mess up daily or even private communication, sometimes preventing having close relationships.Europeans,on the contrary, are more straightforward, preferring to tell the truth in direct ways. Each way of communication is different—neither is correct or incorrect.

5.What does the author say about smiling
A.It is culture -related within Western countries.
B.It is a powerful marketing tool across cultures.
C.It is thought of as a sign of a fool in America.
D.It is regarded as being socially necessary in Europe.

6.What is typical of Europeans' communication
A.Beating around the bush.
B.Having small talk and chats.
C.Hiding their feelings carefully.
D.Expressing themselves openly.
根据第三段中的“Europeans are more straightforward...take a shower.”

7.What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to
A.Being straightforward.
B.Being politically correct.
C.Accepting everything new.
D.Raising unbelievable conservatives.

8.How is the passage mainly developed
A.By analyzing cause and effect.
B.By making comparisons.
C.By classifying body language.
D.By discussing research findings.

A
I suffered from mental illness and depression when I was younger, which totally affected my teenage years. But after a long struggle, I found a hobby that changed my life.
My depression really kicked in after my parents moved to the UK when I was about 11 years old. Having to adjust to life in a foreign country was very difficult. The friends I knew were gone, and the changes in my environment led to my depression. I had problems in many parts of my life, which made it impossible for me to carry on.
At that time, I didn't understand that depression was an illness. I remember a particular day when I couldn't find enough strength to get myself home from playing in the park—it felt like I was carrying the world on my shoulders.
Other times, I just felt so trapped. I never really reached out for help, as I felt that there wasn't anyone who could help me out.
What turned my life around, however, was my discovery of street dancing. I was introduced to it by a friend, and I started taking classes at a studio in London. After a few weeks, I began to go out and meet a lot of other dancers to practice and train with them on a regular basis. It gave me a purpose, and eventually the happiness I gained from it helped me manage my depression. The dancing helped me get my life back, focus on my studies, and get through university.
My advice to anyone who might be going through something like I was is to reach out for help. The thing about life is that it changes, and you never know what might come your way. If someone had said to me during those dark moments that I would go on to achieve the things I have, I wouldn't have ever believed it.
Just take each day as it comes, and remember that there's always someone, or something, out there to help you.

(2025·深圳宝安区期末)Have you ever argued with a friend, and said or done something you regretted Sometimes it can be hard to put things right, especially when feelings have been hurt. Knowing how to apologise can help you become friends again and understand why you fell out in the first place.
We argue for all kinds of reasons. You might think your football team is fantastic but your friend disagrees; or maybe your sister is really annoying. Sometimes, especially if you're angry, things can spiral out of control and you'll say or do something you regret. Arguing and disagreeing with others occasionally is normal—we all do it—but it's important to resolve your differences afterwards so bad feelings don't get worse. This is where an apology can help.
We all make mistakes, and apologising is a way of admitting we've got something wrong and will try not to do it again. Dr. Jennifer Thomas, a psychologist and author, believes an apology needs to show the other person that we're genuinely (真诚地) sorry, that we accept responsibility for our actions and that we want their forgiveness.
Sometimes another person may pressure you into taking the blame when it's not your fault. If you feel that this is happening, try talking about why you argued in the first place and explain how it made you feel. If you still can't agree, you could ask a parent or teacher to help you resolve the problem.
Just saying “I'm sorry” might not always be enough, so try to ask the other person how they felt while you were arguing. Explain your side too, and make it clear that you'll try not to repeat the same mistake again. A genuine apology isn't a magic wand (魔杖); it may take someone some time to understand and forgive. Even after you've said sorry, you could still feel bad but you can feel good about trying to fix things and promising to do better next time.

这样的过去分词(短语)常见的有:seated、hidden、lost/absorbed in、dressed in、concerned about、stressed out等。

A
We often hear honesty is the best policy, and no one likes to be called a liar. But is dishonesty always wrong? Not necessarily.
According to psychologists, there are two types of lies:lies that help your relationships and the people around you are called pro-social lies;and lies that hurt them are called antisocial lies.
How often have you clicked “Like” on social media, not because you actually like what your friends posted, but because you want to show your support? This white lie is an example of a pro social lie. But when people tell lies on social networks to make their own lives seem more exciting,or to make others jealous, this is antisocial lying.
Workplace lies range from harmless lies to destructive untruthful statements. An example of a pro social workplace lie is complimenting someone on their presentation—even though it was only average—because you know they were nervous beforehand. In this case your intention is simply to protect your colleague's feelings. However, people sometimes tell bigger lies at work for the purpose of avoiding blame or to stay on the boss' good side. These are antisocial lies. They are antisocial because your boss is likely to discover the truth and, as a result, will probably stop trusting you.
Lying is also a significant part of the natural world. So it's little wonder we resort to it almost reflexively(下意识地).Human babies sometimes pretend to cry, check to see if anyone is listening, and then start crying again.By the age of five, children learn to say things that are completely untrue, and most nine-year-olds have mastered keeping secrets to protect themselves.
Lying can be incredibly harmful to our relationships and to the people around us.But that's only true for antisocial lies.Pro-social lies have the opposite effect—they can actually help us.

1.What may help us tell a pro-social lie from an antisocial lie
A.The purpose it serves.
B.The way it is told.
C.The occasion where it is told.
D.The people it is told to.

2.What does the underlined phrase “resort to” in paragraph 5 mean
A.Admit to. B.Turn to.
C.Show respect to. D.Look forward to.
根据画线词上文“Lying is also a significant part of the natural world.”

3.Which statement is supported by the passage
A.We usually tell pro-social lies to protect our own feelings.
B.Lying always hurts both the liar and the person being lied to.

Did you hear what happened to Adam last Friday?” Lindsey whispers to Tori.
With her eyes shining, Tori brags, “You bet I did.Sean told me two days ago.”
Who are Lindsey and Tori talking about It just happened to be yours truly, Adam Freedman. I can tell you that what they are saying is (a) not nice and (b) not even true. Still, Lindsey and Tori aren't very different from most students here at Linton High School, including me.Many of our conversations are gossip (闲话).I have noticed three effects of gossip: it can hurt people, it can give gossipers a strange kind of satisfaction, and it can cause social pressures in a group.
An important negative effect of gossip is that it can hurt the person being talked about. Usually, gossip spreads information about a topic—break-ups,trouble at home, even dropping out—that a person would rather keep secret. The more embarrassing or shameful the secret is,the juicier the gossip it makes.Probably the worst type of gossip is the absolute lie.People often think of gossipers as harmless, but cruel lies can cause pain.
If we know that gossip can be harmful, then why do so many of us do it The answer lies in another effect of gossip: the satisfaction it gives us.Sharing the latest rumor (谣言) can make a person feel important because he or she knows something that others don't. Similarly, hearing the latest rumor can make a person feel like part of the “in group”. In other words, gossip is satisfying because it gives people a sense of belonging or even superiority (优越感).
Gossip can also have a third effect: it strengthens unwritten, unspoken rules about how people should act.Professor David Wilson explains that gossip is important in policing behaviors in a group.Translated into high school terms, this means that if everybody you hang around with is laughing at what John wore or what Jane said, then you can bet that wearing or saying something similar will get you the same kind of negative attention. The dos and don'ts conveyed through gossip will never show up in any student handbook.
The effects of gossip vary depending on the situation.Next time you feel the urge to spread the latest news, think about why you want to gossip and what effects your “juicy story” might have.

The Pigeon and the Ant
An ant came to the river to drink, but unfortunately fell into the river. A pigeon saw it and threw down a branch to save it. Before long, the ant saw that a hunter was aiming at the pigeon with a gun, so it bit him hard in the foot sharply, not letting him shoot the pigeon. The pigeon was very grateful to the ant, and they became good friends from then on.

One possible version:
As Schopenhauer put in a fable: In winter, porcupines need to keep a proper distance to keep each other warm without hurting each other. From this story, we can get the enlightenment: Keeping a proper distance is of great importance.
The same is true of the interpersonal relationship between friends in real life.If too close, we will feel that we cannot get respect from each other. On the contrary, if the relationship between friends is too distant, it seems that there is a gap between us.
As the saying goes,“Distance produces beauty.”

1.My own experience is a typical example/a classic case. In an English speech contest I didn't do well and felt down. It was Li Lei who encouraged me. Without his help, I wouldn't have cheered up so quickly.
2.I get a better understanding of this fable from my own experience. I well remember it was a cold winter. I felt lonely for going to a new school. My friend Li Lei wrote to me every week. It was his letters that helped me get through the hard times.
3.My own experience in a writing competition can prove the importance of action. I used to plan well, but mostly failed to carry my plans out.

2.In a word, if we have true friendship, we should try to value it by keeping in touch with our friends.
3.All in all/In short/In conclusion/In brief, success comes from not only good planning, but also better doing.
