Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
(2025·德州一中月考)In 1880, fourteen -year- old Matthew Henson was fascinated by the tales of sailors' exciting lives at sea. One day he set out on the forty -mile journey to the nearest large port to seek work on a sailing ship.
In Baltimore, Henson found a job as a cabin boy on a beautiful ship called the Katie Hinds. For the next five years, Henson sailed around the world. By the time he left the Katie Hinds in 1885, Henson was well -educated, thus becoming an excellent seaman.
Unable to find work anywhere else, Henson took a job in a hat shop in Washington, D.C. One day in 1887, a man came in to buy a hat. The man, Robert Peary, asked the owner if he knew anyone with experience at sea. Peary would soon travel to South America for the U.S. government. He needed experienced men to accompany him.
The shop owner knew about his young employee's skills and experience on ocean voyages, so he introduced Peary to Henson. Henson and Peary soon found they had a great deal in common, including their love of the sea.
Using his map -reading and sailing skills, Henson proved himself to be a worthy and intelligent seaman. One day Peary told Henson about his real dream: to be the first man to stand on “the top of the world” at the North Pole. He asked Henson to help him make his dream come true.
Over the next five years, the two explorers made two trips together to the Arctic. However, they were not able to reach the pole each time.
In 1908, Peary and Henson were ready to make their final attempt at reaching the North Pole. Both men were over forty years old. The years of hardship and suffering in extreme cold had taken their toll on both men. This would be their last chance.
In April 1909, Henson's instruments showed they were standing at the North Pole. Together Henson and Peary planted an American flag in the snow. They were greatly honored for their achievement. Today, the two friends and fellow explorers lie in heroes' graves not far apart at Arlington National Cemetery.

Scrolling through social media can quickly convince you that everyone's life is more interesting than yours.During a particularly adventurous week on social media recently, I saw water skiing in Maui, hiking in Yosemite and swimming with wild pigs in Bermuda. I started searching for flights to new places. Then I ordered pho, Vietnam's national dish, from the same Vietnamese place I eat every week and returned to the same old routine and I felt bad about not trying somewhere new.
Evolutionarily, human brains tend to find newfangled experiences more exciting and attention- grabbing than repeated experiences. They can't process all the thrills around us, so we evolve to pay attention to new, flashy and potentially dangerous things more intently than familiar things, which we've seen enough to know they're not dangerous. What's more, words like “repetition” and “repetitiveness” tend to be associated with more negative emotions.
However, recent research published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology suggests we should reconsider how we digest those feelings of monotony (单调).Some previous research has painted a negative picture of repeated experiences, saying that doing the same thing twice can feel less valuable. But Ed O'Brien, a professor of behavioral science, wondered whether people actually underestimate how positively they react to repeated experiences.
To test this theory,Mr O'Brien and his team exposed all participants to the same stimulus (刺激)(various stimuli were tested, including museum visits, movies and video games).Next, after dividing them into two groups, the first group of participants were asked to imagine repeating the experience, while the second actually did repeat the experience. Counter to previous research, Mr O'Brien found that across the board, repeated experiences were far more enjoyable than participants expected. In other words:You're far more likely to enjoy something the second time around than you think.
“Brand new experiences are definitely great for enjoyment,” said Mr O'Brien. “And our studies don't go against this idea. In many cases, the brand new option is better. But,what our studies emphasize is that repeated options might also have high hedonic (享乐的) value and might also come with lower costs than a purely new option.”
【解题导语】 本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了很多人都喜欢冒险,追求新鲜感,但是研究发现重复也能给我们带来快乐。

(2025·济宁一中月考)Growing up on a farm, Tori James spent most of her early years outdoors, building shelters and playing in muddy streams. She describes herself as an ambitious, adventurous child who was fascinated by the survival guidelines on her bedside table. Even so, James says she was unaware at that time that, one day, she might be the youngest British woman to reach the summit of Mount Qomolangma.
Today, James is a professional adventurer. Yet ahead of her first expedition at the age of 18, she spent a long time mapping the cracks of Iceland's Vatnaj kull Glacier with the British Exploring Society. James recalls doubting her ability to last a month out in the cold without the comfort of a hot bath. “It's by stepping out of our comfort zone that we understand our true potential,” she explains. “That's when the magic happens.”
Although James has spent a significant part of her life exploring some of the most remote landscapes in the world, when it comes to traveling, she believes that there are numerous ways for everyone to push back their boundaries, other than by undertaking physical challenges. James also encourages would -be adventurers not to be put off by the stereotypical (成见的) image of the rugged, hardy explorer. “I am such a believer that, with the right support and skills, everyone can bring something to an expedition,” she says.
Sometimes, she adds, it's only out in the field that someone's hidden talents emerge. A diverse team can be the key to a successful trip, particularly given the role of exploration in today's world. “Historically, exploration has been about people finding nature's hardest obstacles and trying to either overcome them, or beat them,” says James. “But now, for me at least, exploration is about connecting with nature, not conquering it. It's about our connection to the living world around us, it's about sharing its importance once we've returned and it's about figuring out how to go on an adventure sustainably.”

(2025·驻马店经济开发区高级中学月考)While temperatures continue to climb, visitors are still coming to visit Death Valley National Park on the border between California and Nevada. The park is known as the hottest place on Earth. This past weekend, the temperatures climbed to 54.4 ℃. Most visitors at this time of year make it only a short distance to any area in the park before returning to the cool air in their vehicles.
Early information from the park service shows that across the nation's 424 national parks, at least four people have died from heat related causes in 2023. That includes a 65- year -old man from San Diego who was found dead at Death Valley.
Death Valley National Park suggests visitors be careful and not have expectations of rescue. While park rangers (护林员) drive on park roads and can aid tourists in need, it is unsure that lost visitors will get help in time.
Physical activity can make the heat feel even worse and leave people exhausted. Alessia Dempster, who was visiting from Edinburgh, Scotland, said, “It's very hot especially when there's a gentle wind. You would think that maybe that would give you some slight relief from the heat, but it just really does feel like an air blow dryer just going back in your face.”
Death Valley is a narrow area that is below sea level and surrounded by high mountains, the park service's website says. The dry air and small plant coverage let sunlight heat up the park surface. The heat then becomes trapped in the valley.
Still, several areas in Death Valley continue to draw tourists. Badwater Basin, made up of salt flats, is considered the lowest point in all of North America. Ubehebe Crater dates back over 2,000 years. And Zabriskie Point is a great sunrise viewing spot.
Josh Miller, a visitor from Indianapolis who has been to 20 national parks so far, shared that feeling. “It's hot, but the scenery is awesome,” he said.
【解题导语】 本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了美国死亡谷,尽管这里的气温非常高,但还是吸引了很多人前来参观。

6.Why does the author mention the 65 -year- old man in paragraph 2
A.To encourage the elderly to travel more.
B.To express admiration for mountain climbers.
C.To advise people to tour Death Valley more often.
D.To show the danger of traveling in Death Valley.
解析:推理判断题。根据第二段中的“across the nation's 424 national parks...was found dead at Death Valley”可推知,作者提及这位65岁的老人是为了说明在死亡谷国家公园游玩的危险之处。

7.What does paragraph 5 mainly tell us about Death Valley
A.Its covering area.
B.Its attractive spots.
C.The reason why it is so hot.

8.What can be inferred about Death Valley from the last two paragraphs
A.It has a short history.
B.It is worth visiting.
C.It draws fewer and fewer tourists.
D.It is unsuitable for viewing sunrise.

A
(2025·茂名七校联考)In 2004, Pen Hadow became
the first person to trek (跋涉) to the North Pole alone,
without being resupplied on the way. That meant swimming through cold waters, and risking meeting polar bears. Just eight months later, he made a similar trip to the South Pole. Now he is back in the Arctic
again, preparing for a more ambitious expedition (远征). This time, however, more significance is attached. Pen and two colleagues will set out on a three- month, 1,000 -kilometre trek to the North Pole, taking detailed measurements of the thickness and density of the ice. Nobody has ever done this before, and he knows the results will be of vital significance to the scientific community. This will be the truest picture so far of what global warming is doing to the ice that covers the polar region.
Pen and his wife, Mary, live in the country with their two children. “It's much harder to be away from them this time,” he admits. “They were one and five when I last went, and I made a mistake in the way I said goodbye. I thought it would be a good idea to say to my son, ‘You're the man of the house now. Look after your mum and your sister.’ He absolutely took it to heart, asking his mum how she was all the time, but the stress eventually became too much. While it was well intentioned, it was an unfair thing to do.”
He is spending these last days before departure preparing his things. With him will be Ann Daniels, one of the world's leading polar explorers, and the photographer, Martin Hartley. They will be supported by a crew of six, flying in supplies. Being part of a team is actually more stressful to someone like him. Besides, something else is on his mind too. “I'm going to be 47 on Thursday. I've done far less training. Why Organizational things always seem more urgent. So I'm almost fearful of what I'm going to ask of myself.”
Pen believes his mission reconnects exploration with the search for knowledge that drove previous generations into the unknown. “Making it to the North Pole was a personal ambition and of limited value to anyone beyond the polar adventuring community. This time, scientists will profit from the data, and we're creating a platform to expose as many people as possible to what's happening in the Arctic Ocean. This is important work, and nobody can do it but us,” he says. “Our skills, which are otherwise not that necessary, have become really relevant. Suddenly, we're socially useful again.”

(2025·中山期末)When you look at the public maps of the seafloor, you can get the impression that the job of mapping the planet is over. However, far from it.
Even these seemingly precise representations, often based on satellite estimates of ocean depths, are not particularly revealing. They're rather like throwing a wet blanket over a table set for a fancy dinner party. You might see the outlines of a big table surrounded by a dozen chairs, perhaps some drinking glasses if the blanket's really wet. But that's about it. You wouldn't see the plates, let alone what's for dinner. Satellite data, in other words, only give a rough idea of what lies beneath the sea.
That's why exploration and mapping, and making the data open source, would be necessary for the betterment of all citizens, not just in economic terms but in opportunities for unexpected discoveries.
In one way or another I've been exploring and mapping the ocean since 1967. In 2013 I mounted the latest multi -beam sonar (多波束声呐) on Nautilus, a large ship operated by the Ocean Exploration Trust, the nonprofit education and research organization I founded. The set of instruments can make highly accurate 3D maps, detect if the seafloor is hard or soft, and can even discover oil and gas in the water column. One of our standout missions included surveys over natural gas leakage (渗漏) in the Gulf of Mexico, where Nautilus mapped the wreck (残骸) of the U -166, the only German U -boat known to be sunk during World War Ⅱ.
All in all, Nautilus has helped us map nearly 40,000 square miles of the seafloor—a vast area the size of Kentucky, but a drop in the bucket compared with what's left to do. Next year's expeditions include trips south of the equator for the first time, where the ocean covers more than 80 percent of the area and where few other explorers have ever been.

8.What is probably the author
A.An official. B.A detective.
C.An explorer. D.A businessman.
解析:推理判断题。根据第四段中的“In one way or another I've been exploring...multi beam sonar on Nautilus”可知,作者一直在探索和绘制海洋地图。由此可推知,作者是一个探险家。
