A
(2025·烟台一中高一期末)When I was growing up,my grandparents bought a second home in a small forest in Arkansas and would bring me there every single summer. I would spend a lot of time outside there following my grandfather around while he did yard work. We would collect cool-looking rocks and refill the hummingbird feeders.
I always remember my grandparents calling me over to the window when a deer family was in the yard or a few hummingbirds were at the feeders so that I could watch them. I would explore around in the yard by myself sometimes to look for interesting rocks and if I was lucky, I would find a turtle (龟). If I did find a turtle, my grandfather would put it in the kiddy pool for me to observe for a few minutes. I was always amazed by these creatures. After I finished observing the turtle, my grandfather would pick it
up and return it to the bush where I found it. I would watch in amazement as it slowly stuck its legs out and went back.
I always felt very at peace at my grandparents' home. It was quiet and full of interesting natural things I never got to see in Illinois. They disturbed the land around them as little as possible and didn't see it as a nuisance (讨厌的东西), but rather a beautiful view.
As Aldo Leopold, an American scientist, puts it, we should take time to enjoy and observe the natural world around us. When we do this,we find it brings us happiness and has a great value beyond just that of resources. Protection of the natural world is important because we are dependent upon it for life. We cannot worsen such a bountiful provider at such a speed because it will never return to anything like what it once was.
Whenever I get lost in the lights and noises in this forest of cement (水泥) high-rises,the memories will calm me down and make me smile.

The sun rises over the Cordillera mountain ranges in the Philippines, lighting up the beautiful terraced rice fields. Rows of
terraces wrap around the mountainsides from the ground to the very mountaintops, as far as the eye can see. Built with stone walls at least 1,000 years old, possibly 2,000 years, they are maintained by the ancient tradition and the lifestyle of the local Ifugao people.
But life here is changing, and with it comes threat to this World Heritage (遗产) Site.
Young people are influenced by modern media and no longer want to work such long hours. More educational opportunities mean that many choose to make a life outside of the villages and rice fields. Roads are being built, allowing trucks bearing agricultural goods and buses bringing more tourists to and fro. More tourists mean the need for more water and food, and the production of more
waste and pollution. Ugly tall buildings, rather than beautiful traditional wooden homes, spring up in some villages.
Can these changes be managed so that the terraces continue to produce rice, and remain a beautiful part of our world heritage?Jimmy Padchanan, an official of the village of Mayoyao, said in an interview, “We are combining the old societies with the new, while maintaining many of our values.” He and the local people were confident that they would keep the best of the new and the strength of the past to protect the terraces, which are described as “a living cultural landscape of breathtaking beauty”.

A
Ritz has been
teaching for nearly 10 years in a high school where
the early graduation rate of the students was just 17%.
He discovered a way to connect and intrigue these
students, especially the ones who seemed the hardest to reach.
Once, he received a package of flower bulbs (球茎) which he mistakenly thought were onions. He was afraid that they might become weapons (武器) in a classroom fight, so he hid them behind a radiator (暖气片) inside the classroom and forgot about them.
Six weeks later, an angry girl ran after a boy who always made troubles. As usual, Ritz rushed towards them to break up what he thought was about to become a disaster. He saw the boy reach towards the radiator and thought he might have hidden a weapon there. To his surprise, the boy suddenly pulled out a bunch of yellow flowers and gave them to the girl as a peace offering. The girl decided to take the flowers home to her mother and peace came back.
The forgotten bulbs were actually daffodils (水仙花). The steam from the radiator had forced them into flowers. From such an experience, Ritz realized that if there was power in plants to prevent a classroom fight, there must be power in plants to change students' lives. He turned the moment of growing plants into a green course, a movement that would change his life and the lives of his students. He designed vegetable gardens in part of the school ground and on top of a building.
Ritz's students now have not only near-perfect attendance and graduation rates, but also great green fingers.

Begun 30 years ago, the Kubuqi desert greening project has succeeded in not only controlling the fast growth of the seventh-largest desert in China, about the size of Kuwait, but
also turning about 6,000 square kilometers of the desert—more than one-third of it—green.
The desert lies about 800 kilometers to the west of Beijing in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the greening efforts have also controlled desertification (沙漠化) in the rest of the area.
The project, which began about 30 years ago, can be seen as an example of efforts to advance green development, in order to create harmony between humans and nature, and leave a better environment for future generations.
The success of the project, which has been praised by the UN Environment Programme as an “eco-pioneer”, sets an example for successful desertification control and ecosystem improvement based on effective government policies, supported by investment (投资) in the eco-industry and combined with the efforts of local farmers. These three aspects are the key to the success of the “Kubuqi model”.
A private ecology and investment company has invested about 38 billion yuan ($5.82 billion) in the Kubuqi desert greening project since 1988, helping to lift about 102,000 local farmers out of poverty. For example, the locals grow a drought-tolerant (耐旱的) plant, Chinese licorice, which is the most used herb in traditional Chinese medicine. The plant helps enrich the desert soil, with the bacteria around the roots of the plants producing nitrogen (氮气). Besides, Cistanche, another type of drought-tolerant herb, was
introduced after the successful planting of licorice. Under the company's guidance and with the local government's support, the local people benefit from the “environmental wealth”.
More companies should be encouraged to apply the “Kubuqi model” to other desert control projects in Inner Mongolia and neighboring Gansu Province, where the climate conditions are similar but not quite the same, so as to further gain experience and enrich the model in practice. Showing it can be successfully applied in other areas will help promote the model worldwide.

(2025·枣庄薛城区、滕州高一期中)Farmers in Italy's famous Tuscany area are struggling to save grape and olive (橄榄) crops influenced by a heatwave and dry conditions. A lack of rainfall
since spring has even influenced plants that traditionally grow well in hot and dry weather.
In San Casciano in Val di Pesa, near Florence, olive trees line the hillsides. But farmers say the dry soil is preventing the trees from producing the usual production of fruit.
Tuscany is famous around the world for its olive oil and wine from grapes. Growers in the area say dry, hot weather always has a great influence on the crops and harms production. But this year's heat and lack of water happened during an important time, when the flowers were changing to the fruit. Without water, many flowers fell
to the ground before they could produce fruits. This year's oil production could be cut by up to 60 percent.
Olive growers have decided to change some of their farming methods. They have used a new watering method to make up for the lack of rainfall and hot temperatures. The method works with a pipe placed under the trees to drop water little by little.
The influences of weather change have harmed production and plants, but they have also created new areas in Italy where crops can be grown. A few years ago, olive farms were mainly found in hot and dry areas such as Sicily. Now, areas such as Valle d'Aosta in the far north of Italy—which is famous for its snow sport holiday places and mountains—can produce their own oil.
Climate change is also influencing wine crops in Tuscany. In Chianti, for example, September is normally the month for the yearly grape harvest. But with continued high temperatures, many grapes are ripening (成熟) earlier than expected. Apart from the drop in grapes caused by the current heatwave, wine growers also have to deal with other serious weather events. An ice storm recently harmed 40 percent of grapes in the area.

In January 2023, Rio Verde Foothills, a desert community in Arizona, found itself in a bad situation:The water supply was cut off.
The community is made up of about 2,000 homes. For years, many in the community have depended on water trucked in from the nearby city of Scottsdale, which gets its water from the Colorado River. But the river is drying up. Scottsdale says it has to save
water for its own. Now people in Rio Verde Foothills must find a solution.
Some experts say the solution is to bring water from outside the state. One idea is to build a desalination (海水淡化) plant on Mexico's Sea of Cortez. The plant will take away salt from the water and supply that water to Arizona through a 200-mile pipeline (管道).Supporters say this can provide fresh water for about ten years.
Environmentalists say the desalination project will harm the planet in several ways. Some of the salt taken out of the Sea of Cortez might end up back in the ocean, harming wildlife. The pipeline will be harmful to land where people and animals live. And the desalination process uses lots of power. This will create greenhouse gases, which are causing the conditions that have led to Arizona's water problems.
Margaret Wilder, a professor at the University of Arizona, says the government should focus on reducing water demand (需求) rather than increasing supply. That means taking water-saving measures and controlling how many homes are built in the desert.“We need to start asking questions when people present us with unproblematic solutions to the water problem,” says Wilder.
People in Tucson,Arizona, have found a solution to the city's water shortage:rainwater. Thousands of households are collecting it and using it for cooking, for drinking, and for watering. Government leaders have taken notice. The city now requires publicly built roads to collect rainwater. Tucson also helps residents pay for equipment that collects rainwater for home use.
5.Why did Scottsdale cut off the water supply to Rio Verde Foothills ( )
A.The locals wasted plenty of fresh water.
B.Mexico's Sea of Cortez was polluted.
C.More and more people moved to the community.
D.The water level of the Colorado River had fallen.
根据第二段中的“For years, many in the...the river is drying up.”

6.What do the environmentalists think of the desalination project ( )
A.It won't solve the water shortage.
B.It can improve people's well-being.
C.It can't meet the community's needs.
D.It might be bad for the environment.

7.What does Margaret Wilder probably suggest ( )

8.Where is this passage likely from ( )
A.Newspaper. B.Guidebook. C.Diary. D.Novel.

(2025·安徽阜南高一期中)A simple and common way to water plants is to hold a garden pipe (管子) and let the water fall down directly on the plants and soil. This is a good choice that does not waste water. It can also help prevent plant disease. But a garden pipe is not the only way to water your plants.
The Time and Way of Watering
1._______________________________________________________ This lets the water go deep into the soil before the weather gets too hot. If you water the plants late in the day, the water will just evaporate (蒸发) from the surface. If you water the plants in the evening, the plants stay too wet overnight.
E.The best time to water your plants is in the morning.
解析:根据下文“This lets the water go deep...the plants stay too wet overnight.”
How you water the plants is just as important as when you water them. If you water the soil quickly every day, it does not help the roots, which can spread over 30 centimeters into the soil. Water the soil less often, but deep. Be careful when watering very dry soil because the water will just run off without getting into the soil.2.__________________________________________________________________
G.Water your plants slowly and make sure the water is taken in by earth.
解析:根据上文“If you water the soil quickly every day, it does not help the roots”可知,上文建议不要每天快速浇水,空处为本段最后一句,此处说明应该慢慢浇水,确保水被泥土吸收。
Collect and Reuse Water
One way to help keep costs low for watering plants is to use used water. Instead of emptying water out after boiling foods, keep it and reuse it to water plants.3. _______________________________
_________________ You can also catch and use rainwater.
C.Just make sure the water does not have salt in it.
解析:根据上文“One way to help keep costs low...and reuse it to water plants.”
Choose Plants
Most gardeners just think about which plants look good and the plants' sunlight needs.4. _______________________________________
____ Drought-resistant (抗旱的) plants should not be overwatered when you are trying to keep thirstier plants watered.
B.But watering needs should be considered, too.
解析:根据上文“Most gardeners just...sunlight needs.”
It is also best to use plants that are native to the area where you live. These plants are likely to be resistant to drought. 5._____________________________________________ After that, they can live on just rainwater except during times of extreme heat.
D.They just need watering for the first two years.
解析:根据上文“It is also best to use...to be resistant to drought.”
A.Put more pipes around the plants.
B.But watering needs should be considered, too.
C.Just make sure the water does not have salt in it.
D.They just need watering for the first two years.
E.The best time to water your plants is in the morning.

The earthquake that hit San Francisco on April 18,1906 shook down hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of walls and chimneys (烟囱). But the fire that followed burned up hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of buildings and homes. Never before in history had a city been so completely destroyed. San Francisco was gone. The factories, the great stores and newspaper buildings, the hotels, and the great houses of the rich were all gone.
On Wednesday morning at a quarter past five came the earthquake. A moment later, the disaster was a fact. South of Market Street, in the working-class neighborhoods and in the factories, fires started. Within an hour of the first quake, the smoke could be seen 100 miles away. The sun was red in the dark sky. There was no stopping the fires. The firefighters to whom the task was given did their best but there was no way to organize or communicate. The railway tracks were now useless and there was no water in water pipes. All of the ways man had made to keep the city safe were gone in the thirty seconds the earth moved.
On Wednesday afternoon, half the heart of the city was gone. At that time, I watched the disaster from a ship on the bay (海湾). Out at sea it was calm. No wind came up. Yet from every direction—east, west, north, and south—strong winds blew upon the unlucky city and those whose homes had once stood in its green hills.
Wednesday night saw the destruction of the very heart of the city. Man himself had to make ruins of some of the city's best buildings so that they would not be a danger to those in the streets. Tens of thousands who had lost their homes left the city to look for shelters from the fires. Some were dressed only in blankets and carried the things that they had been able to rescue from the fires. But there were no fights and no pushing or shoving. Somehow this worst of disasters brought out the best in the survivors. Never in all of San Francisco's history were her people so kind as on this night of terror.

Getting up early has been regarded as a good habit since ancient times. Many years ago, people thought that if we went to bed early and got up early, we would be energetic the whole day. So,getting up early is of great importance to us all.
In fact, morning is the best time of the day. In the morning, the air is the freshest and people are usually in the best condition. Many of us may have the experiences that we memorise some things more quickly and correctly in the morning than at any other time of the day. And it is certain that we find it easier to understand what we learn. If we get up early and do some morning exercises or only take a short walk in the morning, without doubt we can build up our bodies and become much healthier.
Also we will have enough time to make a plan and get ready for our work or study of the day if we get up early. For example, if everyone in the family gets up early, parents will have enough time to prepare the breakfast for the whole family and children will have enough time to catch the school bus. Everything is in order. However,if we get up late, we'll probably have to do everything in a hurry.
Let us remember getting up early is a good habit and try our best to keep it. Late risers may find it difficult to form the habit of getting up early. They have to make an effort to do so. If we stick to getting up early every day,we will certainly benefit a lot from it.

P)This forms clouds from which rain falls down onto the mountain terraces once again.
(2)(教材P)Although modern technology could help produce more crops, these terraces still mean a lot to the local people for whom traditions hold much value.
(3)(教材P)There are hundreds of waterways, along which rainwater moves down the mountains and into the terraces.
P)These terraces were built by the local Zhuang and Yao people, to whom Guangxi is home.
(2)(人教必修一U5)Written Chinese has also become an important means by which China's present is connected with its past.
(3)The Amazon River, from which the rainforest gets its name, is close to 6,400 kilometres in length—roughly 100 kilometres longer than the Yangtze River.
(1)根据定语从句修饰先行词的习惯来确定介词;
(2)根据定语从句中某些词或短语的习惯搭配来确定介词;
常见的这类动词短语有look at、 look into、 listen to、 hear from、 look after、 break into等。
P)But perhaps what is most significant is the way in which(=that) people have worked in harmony with nature to make these terraces and grow rice.
P)These terraces also provide a perfect environment for birds and fish, some of which feed on insects that can harm the rice crops.
(3)Great changes have taken place in the city in which(=where) I was born.
(4)Look at the building, the roof of which(= whose roof) is white.
(5)There are two buildings, the larger of which stands nearly a hundred feet high.
2.“代词(all/each/one/many/much/some/none/both)/数词+of+which/whom”通常在定语从句中作主语,说明整体中的一部分。
4.“the+名词+of+which/whom”引导定语从句时,of which/whom充当定语,修饰前面的名词,整个结构相当于“whose+名词”引导的定语从句。
5.“the+形容词比较级/最高级+of+which/whom”引导非限制性定语从句。
