1. Learn and use the chunks like:
words: commute; outlook; upcoming; rehearsal; classify; quest; sponge; squeeze; finite; brainstorm
phrases: take up; lead to; stick to
sentence patterns:
Do some quick calculations, and it will occur to you that these essential activities take up an enormous part of your day, leaving only limited time to stay with family and friends, pursue a hobby or work on personal development.
It means that you will be able to accomplish much more with less effort in shorter periods of time.
Importantly, effective time management will not only support your studies today, but also help you throughout your adult life.
There are many things you can do, but let me share with you what I consider to be the three most important skills.
Get into the habit of thinking about upcoming events and making a monthly, weekly or even daily to do list.
Whether it is a planner that you stick on the wall or a calendar app on your smartphone, finding an organizing tool that works well for you is essential.
Then, record all important events such as exams, projects and rehearsals, so that you know all the dates and deadlines and can prepare accordingly.
After you have all that needs to be done in mind, you can set about creating favourable conditions to actually get things done.
Being well organized includes making sure you have everything ready for tomorrow's lessons and after school activities.
This includes putting away your mobile phone until you have finished everything that needs to be done.
There is only a limited amount of time in a day, and even with good planning and organization, it is not always possible to complete everything that needs to be done.
In such circumstances, you will have to decide which tasks should be completed first.
While choosing which task needs to be done first can be a difficult decision to make, it is important not to let peer pressure or the quest for short term rewards influence you, but to focus on the goals you have set for yourself and stick to them.
Time is a finite resource, but with a little effort you can always find the time to do what needs to be done.
I hope you have found my talk interesting and useful and that you never again have to say “I don't have the time to do that”.

Why do we like drinking water from plastic bottles(塑料瓶) Some people think it is healthy and clean. Others drink bottled water because it's easy—you can carry it around with you. In hot countries, like Greece, we often buy bottles of cold water in the summer.
Step Ⅴ:Homework.
However, making lots of plastic is not a good idea for many reasons. First of all, we need a lot of oil for plastic products. We usually use oil as a source of energy. If we reduced the number of bottles we made, we wouldn't need so much oil. Plastic bottles also pollute the environment. If we reused all our plastic bottles, we wouldn't need so much space for rubbish dumps. But in Greece, we don't reuse much of the plastic we use. In 2003, Greeks reused only about 10% of plastic waste. The rest became rubbish on land and in rivers and seas.
So next time you want to throw away a plastic bottle in the litter bin, stop and think. If you reuse it, you would help the environment. But what can you do when there isn't a bin near you Well, there are lots of useful ways that you can use your bottles again. For example, an empty bottle makes a great piggy bank for your pocket money, and if you cut a bottle in half, you will have a plant pot. Go green! You can make a difference.

1. Learn and use the chunks(语块) like:
words:punctual; overview; composite; reap; destiny; maxim; cable; strand; tremendous; transfix; superlative; eventful; imbed; procrastination; violate; cohesiveness; paradigm; spouse; forth; pseudo security; subordinate; proactive; visualize
phrases: break out of; search out; and so forth
sentence patterns:
“Sow a thought, reap an action; sow an action, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character, reap a destiny,” the maxim goes.
Because they are consistent, often unconscious patterns, they constantly, daily, express our character and produce our effectiveness … or ineffectiveness.
Superlatives such as“fantastic”and“incredible”were inadequate to describe those eventful days.
More energy was spent in the first few minutes of lift off, in the first few miles of travel, than was used over the next several days to travel half a million miles.
Breaking deeply imbedded habitual tendencies such as procrastination, impatience, criticalness, or selfishness that violate basic principles of human effectiveness involves more than a little willpower and a few minor changes in our lives.
The gravity pull of some of our habits may currently be keeping us from going where we want to go.
Unless I search out correct principles of human interaction, I may not even know I need to listen.
Even if I do know that in order to interact effectively with others I really need to listen to them, I may not have the skill.
The being/seeing change is an upward process—being changing seeing, which in turn changes being, and so forth, as we move in an upward spiral of growth.
By working on knowledge, skill, and desire, we can break through to new levels of personal and interpersonal effectiveness as we break with old paradigms that may have been a source of pseudo security for years.
Happiness can be defined, in part at least, as the fruit of the desire and ability to sacrifice what we want now for what we want eventually. 2. Write a short article according to the hints(提示), using the chunks that have been learnt.
Review the text of“The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”by retelling it in your own words. You may begin like this:

It is widely recognized that self discipline gives us freedom. Those who can control themselves have the ability to make the best use of their time, thus lost in the joy of freedom while other people suffer from “painful self discipline”, stuck in a difficult situation where they feel guilty for not being able to complete the missions on their never ending to do lists.
But do these pains come from self discipline Not exactly. The people who are anxious about being so called self disciplined masters are actually missing the point of this virtue. It's not a “the more the better” kind of thing. Rather, it's the capability to find a complicated balance between work and entertainment, which enables you to work more efficiently and to take control of your life. Thus, there's no need to push yourself too hard.
As a self disciplined student, I think I understand the key to easing the sometimes painful learning process with all kinds of after school activities. Self discipline urges me to set aside adequate time for all of my required schoolwork and to efficiently finish it. What's more, having a high learning efficiency means that if I am interested in a certain topic in my textbook or the knowledge of a specific field, I can spend more time exploring it in depth, while devoting myself to my own interests. However, each time the bell for the end of class rings, I'm always the first to grab the basketball and dash to the court to enjoy the thrill of a ball game with my friends until the sun sinks below the horizon.
As I said, the real freedom to enjoy a wonderful life is based on self discipline. And the final aim of self discipline is to enjoy a wonderful life. Being self disciplined is about doing the proper thing at the proper time. You have to push yourself under the guidance of self discipline to achieve high efficiency in your daily routine. But don't be too tough on yourself because unreasonable time management may drain you of the energy and passion you need to struggle on. Fit in adequate diversions from work within your carefully designed schedule, and I'm sure you can remove the obstacles that stand in your path to the ultimate freedom.
( ) 1. How does the author develop Paragraph 1
A. By giving an example. B. By making a comparison.
C. By analyzing a reason. D. By presenting a result.
( ) 2. What can we know about self disciplined students in Paragraph 3
A. They have great trouble easing the painful learning process.
B. They can hardly spare time to finish their assignments.
C. They can pursue their hobbies with high learning efficiency.
D. They spend most time enjoying ball games with their friends.
I can spend more time exploring it in depth, while devoting myself to my own interests”,并且放学后可以第一个冲出去和朋友打球。
( ) 3. What does the underlined word “drain” in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Exhaust. B. Increase. C. Provide. D. Preserve.
故选A。
【答案】 A
( ) 4. What is the main idea of the passage
A. Self discipline is the key to achieving high efficiency.
B. People should be strict with themselves to be self disciplined.
C. The pursuit of self discipline is a painful process.
D. Self discipline is about finding a balance and leading to real freedom.
1. Those who can control themselves have the ability to make the best use of their time, thus lost in the joy of freedom while other people suffer from “painful self discipline”, stuck in a difficult situation where they feel guilty for not being able to complete the missions on their never ending to do lists.
前一个分句主干是Those have the ability;定语从句who can control themselves修饰主语Those,不定式短语to make the best use of their time做后置定语修饰 the ability;过去分词短语thus lost in the joy of freedom做结果状语。后一个分句主干是other people suffer from “painful self discipline”,过去分词短语stuck in a difficult situation做结果状语,定语从句where they feel guilty … 修饰 a difficult situation。
2. What's more, having a high learning efficiency means that if I am interested in a certain topic in my textbook or the knowledge of a specific field, I can spend more time exploring it in depth, while devoting myself to my own interests.
动名词短语having a high learning efficiency为本句主语,means为谓语,that引导宾语从句,其中包括if引导的条件状语从句和while引导的时间状语从句省略句(省略了I am)。
3. However, each time the bell for the end of class rings, I'm always the first to grab the basketball and dash to the court to enjoy the thrill of a ball game with my friends until the sun sinks below the horizon.
I'm always the first, each time引导时间状语从句,不定式短语to grab the basketball and dash to the court做定语修饰the first,不定式语to enjoy the thrill …
1. Rather, it's the capability to find a complicated balance between work and entertainment, which enables you to work more efficiently and to take control of your life.
2. You have to push yourself under the guidance of self discipline to achieve high efficiency in your daily routine.
3. But don't be too tough on yourself because unreasonable time management may drain you of the energy and passion you need to struggle on.
Everyone experiences anger in their lives. Maybe you had a fight with your best friend; you didn't get that promotion you expected. __1__ However, it's important to find the right balance between having a bad mood or feeling angry and letting those negative feelings take control of you.
__2__ Anger creates tensions in relationships, especially familial or close relationships. Anger also causes your natural “fight or flight” response, which also causes other changes in the body. The health effects of poorly managed anger range from digestive issues to mental health challenges like anxiety and depression.
It's possible to overcome anger or a bad mood, but it takes a commitment to do it. Anger management is the process of learning to recognize when you're becoming angry and finding skills to express the emotion in a positive, constructive way. Therapists(治疗师) can help people explore the roots of their anger. __3__ They can also teach them better ways to communicate and ultimately, to manage, reduce and prevent harmful anger.
You can have control over your life or emotions by yourself. __4__ Here are some powerful ways you can overcome a bad mood or anger: acknowledge what you're feeling; step back and ask, “Why?”; practice assuming positive intention; exercise and smile; practice mindfulness; use visual reminders; call a friend; let it go symbolically; seek help if needed.
If you believe that you need anger management therapy, you may wonder what to expect. Anger therapy may take place individually with a therapist, or you may choose to take part in an anger management class. __5__
A. Anger can have severe consequences.
B. It just takes practice with effective ways.
C. They can train people in anger control techniques.
D. It's normal to have a bad mood or be upset sometimes.
E. Studies show men and women express anger differently.
F. Anger is often misunderstood as a purely negative emotion.
G. People can learn to unpack the anger with the anger therapy.
故选A。
【答案】 A
干扰项B主语是It,与前后句的主语Therapists/They无法连贯。故选C。
【答案】 C
4. 【解析】 本段首句提出“你可以自己控制情绪”,空后以“Here are some powerful ways …”

Early memories have the power to shape who you are. Unfortunately, in my life, many of my formative moments centered around my struggles with body image.
For most of my life, I have been highly conscious of others' perceptions of my appearance. Whenever I'm around someone I don't know well, I actively use body language to make myself appear thinner. When I was in fourth grade, I remember asking my best friend, “Do you think I'm fat?” She responded, “No, of course not.” But her response didn't comfort me. Since then, I have been vigilant of my body; I realized that the way I see myself isn't the same as how others see me.
Hearing people talk about weight gain as a negative has affected how I feel about myself. One friend used to tell me I'm on “the good side of plus size”. All it did was tell me that I'm overweight. In middle school, I felt like I had to prove to my friends that I was active and healthy. And even today, I worry over normal weight changes, all to try and avoid people sharing their “concerns” about my size.
Discussing body image is difficult. I have found that being allowed to speak openly without judgment builds my self confidence, because I feel that my voice is being heard. I am beginning to listen to my body and understand how it works. I hope to stop overanalyzing and build confidence—not through a number on the scale, but through self acceptance.
( ) 4. What does the author realize after talking to her best friend
A. Her friend truly understood her worries.
B. She needed to lose weight immediately.
C. Her self image differed from others' views.
D. Her appearance was objectively unattractive.
根据第二段中“I realized that the way I see myself isn't the same as how others see me.”
( ) 5. What does the underlined word “vigilant” mean in Paragraph 2
A. Slightly conscious. B. Extremely aware.
C. Completely confident. D. Comfortably familiar.
( ) 6. How did her friend's words “the good side of plus size” affect the author
A. It confirmed her fear of being overweight.
B. It provided comfort about her appearance.
C. It motivated her to exercise more regularly.
D. It helped her to understand body positivity.
根据第三段作者对朋友评价the good side of plus size的反应:“All it did was tell me that I'm overweight.” 故选A。
【答案】 A
( ) 7. What is the main message of the passage
A. Social approval determines personal worth.
B. Childhood experiences cannot be overcome.
C. Weight loss should be the primary health goal.
D. Self acceptance matters more than appearance.

“his smile, fearlessness and determination of a real hero”是官员们称赞他的理由,因此空处用表示“因为”的介词for。故填for。
故填was translated。
故填who/that。
故填the。

How to Build Up Self confidence
Self confidence plays an important role in our life. We can do nothing well without self confidence. There are, I think, three steps to build up our self confidence.
First, we should believe ourselves. This is the basic part of building self confidence. We should tell us that even we can't do it very well, but at least we can make some changes.
Second, to encourage ourselves, we should choose the simple and ordinary things. Rome was not built in a day. Our self confidence was built by starting from the easy part. Then we should make progress step by step by dealing with problems which are much harder to be done well.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Third, we should go farther after finishing the simple and easy part. When we find that we can handle most problems easily, we should know it is a sign of moving forward. For example, if you can run 3 miles in an hour easily, then you should try to run 4 miles in an hour, and then 5 miles. Just keep moving. The better you do, the more confident you will be. Then one day you will find you have surpassed most people around you. And at this time you will find that your self confidence is built up already.

Many people would be unhappy to see young children sitting next to them on a flight, but a man called Todd took it as an opportunity to give a hand to a helpless mom. Jessica spoke about what Todd had done to make her travels with her children much easier.
She was in a panic when she boarded the plane. Her 4 month old Alexander was screaming due to a series of unexpected events. Her 3 year old Caroline, who had been excited before boarding the plane, lost her courage and began screaming too. As Jessica tried to calm them down and help them get settled in, the man sitting next to them stopped in to help.
He reached for the baby and held him while Jessica fastened Caroline's seat belt, got her iPad and started her movie. Once Caroline was settled and relatively calm, he also played games with her so that Jessica could feed Alexander. The kids were calm, but he didn't stop there. Throughout the flight, he engaged 3 year old Caroline's best friend.
Much to Jessica's joy, the man was taking the same connecting flight, too. He helped them get off the plane and led them to the next gate, holding Caroline's hand. As if that wasn't enough, he changed his seat on the next flight so he could sit in their row to help them. He told Jessica his wife had had a similar experience when their two boys were young and that a stranger had done the same thing, which moved him to spread the kindness.
The heart warming story serves as a reminder to show kindness towards panic parents with young babies. Children don't yet know how to handle their feelings so they cry and scream when they are confused or uncomfortable in a new place. By offering a helping hand, we could not only help an overwhelmed parent but also make a child feel a little more comfortable.

As university doors opened in September for a new year, an estimated six million people across the world took to the streets in a historic week of climate action. The power of this youth led campaign reflected the urgency for action on the environment. So what now 1 Here are some ideas about how you can be sustainable as a student.
What you put on your plate matters: nearly a quarter of all greenhouse gases come from agriculture, and most of those are from meat and dairy. Meat and dairy consumption results in excessive(过度的) land use, industrial emissions, methane, water use and deforestation. 2 A meat free diet has been recommended as the single biggest way an individual can reduce their effect on the planet.
Forget fast fashion: keeping your clothes for as long as possible has much more than just monetary value. In the UK, clothing has the fourth largest environmental effect after housing, transport and food. __3__
For some freshers, this will be your first time living alone, which means doing your own washing, cooking and cleaning. 4 Wash your clothes at a lower temperature, and choose a bamboo toothbrush or more eco friendly sanitary(卫生的) products. When shopping, see if there's a zero waste shop nearby, where all products are free from plastic packaging. Just turn up with your own container. If you're planning a weekend away with new friends, try to travel by train or bus.
5 But campaigning is important too. University campuses can be the perfect place for this. If you don't know where and how to start, see if there are any societies at your university like Student Climate Network. Students using fossil fuels in 76 universities have now committed to it.
A. So recycle your clothes or mend them.
B. Meat consumption delays industrial development.
C. And clothing has a bigger impact on environment than food.
D. Cutting out meat is an easy way to reduce your carbon footprint.
E. There are simple ways you can change your habits to live more sustainably.
F. Individual actions matter, as they provide an alternative to how we can live.
G. For freshers starting a new chapter at university, deciding how to live your life is vital.
1._______ 2. _______ 3. _______ 4. _______ 5. _______

In the autumn of 1853 Thomas Butler Gunn got lost—temporarily rather than physically. On a visit to Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, and isolated from the outside world, his diary quickly divorced the time order of reality. Wednesdays are repeated and days go mislabelled. It took around a fortnight, and renewed contact with civilization, for Gunn to restore his weekly bearings.
Step Ⅴ: Homework.
The episode(经历), says David Henkin, suggests how fragile a sense of time can be—especially when it comes to weeks. Unlike months or years, these seven day groupings have no real basis in astronomy. People from Nigeria to China have lived well without them.
And yet the week has become the measure not only of routine, but even of wisdom. “Weekly rhythms have become so thoroughly absorbed into ordinary human experience,” Mr Henkin writes, “that forgetting what day it is constitutes a singular symptom and feeling of disorientation(迷失方向).” His new book shows how the week came to rule the world.
But when newspapers, factory schedules and weekly paydays were all rarer, the weekly structure was less important. People got confused. As late as 1866, the Louisville Courier mentioned a man getting drunk on Friday because he thought it was Saturday.
As towns grew and society became more complicated, citizens “became differently and more intensely week oriented, in ways we can now recognize as modern”. When his local charity met on Wednesdays in 1859, and choral concerts were scheduled for Fridays, James Fiske of Massachusetts couldn't afford to mix up his days. Japan formally adopted the seven day system only in 1873; all the same, a character in a novel by Haruki Murakami is as sure of something “as I am sure that today is Wednesday”.
( ) 1. What is the function of Paragraph 1
A. To introduce the topic. B. To clarify a concept.
C. To record some experience. D. To make a prediction.
A
根据第二段中“The episode(经历), says David Henkin, suggests…these seven day groupings have no real basis in astronomy.”和第三段中“And yet the week has become the measure not only of routine, but even of wisdom.” 故选A。
( ) 2. Why can a sense of week be so fragile
A. Because it does rule the world.
B. Because it is tightly related to reality.
C. Because it is not used very often.
D. Because it is not based on astronomy.
根据第二段中“Unlike months or years, these seven day groupings have no real basis in astronomy.”
D
( ) 3. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A. The influence of abusing the week.
B. The change of weekly rhythms.
C. The disadvantage of using the week less.
D. The importance of changing the weekly structure.
C
( ) 4. What is the author's attitude towards the use of the week
A. Positive. B. Intolerant.
C. Negative. D. Unclear.
根据第三段中“And yet the week has become the measure not only of routine, but even of wisdom.”,和第四段陈述少使用“周”造成的不便,以及最后一段中“As towns grew and society became more complicated, citizens ‘became differently and more intensely week oriented, in ways we can now recognize as modern’.” 故选A。
A
1. It took around a fortnight, and renewed contact with civilization, for Gunn to restore his weekly bearings.
主语是“for Gunn to restore his weekly bearings”,It是形式主语,谓语是took,宾语是“around a fortnight, and renewed contact with civilization”。
2. “Weekly rhythms have become so thoroughly absorbed into ordinary human experience,” Mr Henkin writes, “that forgetting what day it is constitutes a singular symptom and feeling of disorientation.”
that引导的“forgetting what day it is constitutes a singular symptom and feeling of disorientation”是结果状语从句,其中“forgetting what day it is”是动名词短语作主语。
3. As late as 1866, the Louisville Courier mentioned a man getting drunk on Friday because he thought it was Saturday.
主句的主语是“the Louisville Courier ”,谓语是mentioned,宾语是a man, “getting drunk on Friday”是现在分词作定语,because引导原因状语从句。
1. The episode, says David Henkin, suggests how fragile a sense of time can be—especially when it comes to weeks.
2. As towns grew and society became more complicated, citizens “became differently and more intensely week oriented, in ways we can now recognize as modern”.
3. When his local charity met on Wednesdays in 1859, and choral concerts were scheduled for Fridays, James Fiske of Massachusetts couldn't afford to mix up his days.
