My journey to Antarctica was full of surprises. As I boarded the ship, I resolved to say yes to everything during the whole voyage(航海).
On the first afternoon, I sat down with a guide, who was also a creative artist, and we painted clay penguins. He taught me how to mix colours to make penguins looks more real. By the time we finished, three little penguins stood on the table, each with their own personalities. I named them after famous explorers: Shackleton, Amundsen, and Mawson.
The next day, the expedition team announced a rare opportunity: camping a night on the White Continent. That night I lay awake in my cold tent with restless birds making noise. I thought of pioneers who crossed the Antarctic Circle to gather samples and notes, not for enjoyment, but to understand Earth’s extreme end. Inspired, the next morning I signed up for a citizen science project on the rough sea. I put seawater into test tubes as the wind blew and huge waves made it hard to for me to stand. Back on board, at the science centre, a scientist showed us our samples under a microscope. It hit home for me—an entire cosmos(宇宙) in a drop of water. Then the samples were sent to an Argentine lab to help evaluate melting glaciers’(冰川) effect on the Southern Ocean’s food web.
Not every project required me to battle the high seas. Over the next few days, I followed the bird expert and used the iNaturalist app to classify the bird species we spotted, including terns, skuas, and albatrosses. I also took many photos of whales, which were added to a database to help scientists track whales’ movements across oceans and better understand their migration patterns.
At the end of my voyage, without warning, a huge whale leaped out of the water before landing with a heavy crash, sending a small tsunami rushing toward the ship. I was too shocked to pick up my camera. All I could do was watch in wonder — yet another delightfully unexpected Antarctic surprise.

The Gaspésie Peninsula(半岛) is regarded as the birthplace of French Canada. In 1534, explorer Jacques Cartier first claimed it for France, making it a vivid time capsule preserving Canadian history. Fully running on renewable energy, it stands out as a totally unique travel destination.
Rimouski station serves as the gateway to the Gaspésie Peninsula, and most tourists begin their first morning at the beloved bakery, Les Baguettes en l’air. Store up on local specialties on the way to the fascinating trails of Bic National Park. From there, continue onward to the not-to-be-missed Jardins de Métis, home to over 3,000 plant species and a state-of-the-art eco-house.
Wandering around the coastline can easily take a week or longer. Take some time to visit classic seafood restaurants like Sainte Flavie’s Capitaine Homard. Continuing east, visitors have their choice of three notable lighthouse tours: Matane, Cap-Chat and Percé. Continue on to some of Gaspé’s most breathtaking views at Forillon National Park. Be sure to head for the high country along one of the river canyons(峡谷) popular for salmon fishing and winter sports. Highway 299 linking Sainte-Anne-des-Monts with Chaleur Bay is a great route for taking photos at Gaspésie National Park.
The maritime science centre, Exploramer in Sainte-Anne-des-Monts, gives travellers a chance to explore the region’s biodiversity via a St. Lawrence River research ship. This is a perfect destination for families with children who love the aquarium(水族箱) and hands-on exhibits. Further east, explore Gaspé's Musée de la Gaspésie and the Mi’kmaq Interpretation Site. In Gaspé, see the Jacques Cartier Cross monument. The historic site is where Cartier “discovered” Canada for the French, and is the heart of the community’s old town.
Farming and the sea are central to the peninsula’s past and present. At Gaspé's Océan de Saveurs, Québec's first certified organic seaweed producer, diver Antoine Nicolas hand-harvests coastal algae and offers a variety of products—including seasonings and cosmetics. In Douglastown, Gaspésie Sauvage—run by Belgian immigrants Gérard Mathar and Catherine Jacob—is a step back in time to farming self-sufficiency. At their stores explorers can sample some of their wild chanterelles, lobster mushrooms, teas, seeds and other foraged goods.
28. What’s special about the Gaspésie Peninsula
A. It’s sustainable. B. It’s binational. C. It’s unexplored. D. It’s artificial.

A. Environmental protection ways. B. Top popular destinations.
C. Spots along the coastal journey. D. People’s usual travel routes.

Imagine dining on a perfectly cooked steak with fine wine, while outside your window lies the freezing yet beautiful Antarctic Peninsula(半岛). This is not a dream but a real experience on a modern expedition ship. Three years ago I took such a trip with comfortable cabins, a library, and a spa. Although I admired the brave explorers of the past, I had no desire to suffer as they did. And I was not alone—most travellers want adventure, as long as it is not too extreme.
This travel style is called soft adventure. Unlike hardcore exploration, it offers comfort and safety with exciting experiences. A report says the adventure tourism market was worth 345 billion in 2025 and is expected to nearly quadruple(翻两番) by 2033, with soft adventure taking the largest share.
But what exactly is soft adventure It is hard to define because “soft” and “adventure” mean different things to different people. For some, an electric bike ride is adventurous enough; for others, only climbing a mountain counts.
Why is soft adventure becoming so popular Social media plays a big role. Beautiful photos of faraway places inspire even the least adventurous people to seek similar experiences. At the same time, many people want to escape their digital devices and live a healthier, more active lifestyle. Tour operators have lowered the barriers to entry. You don’t need special skills or extreme fitness.
Cycling is a perfect example. With e-bikes and GPS, people of all ages can enjoy trips through various countries. Many holiday companies are offering “upgraded” adventures, where you can stay in palaces or houseboats instead of basic tents. Even walking trips in Albania or cycling in West Africa are gaining popularity. These trips boost local economies and focus on less crowded destinations, which helps fight overtourism.
Some people might say soft adventure is just a watered-down version of real adventure. One travel expert argues that it completely misses the point. Soft adventure is about immersing(使沉浸于) yourself in a new place and having fun. It allows more people to explore the world in comfort.
32. Why is the author’s example mentioned in the first paragraph
To prove that life in Antarctic is improving.
B. To describe the facilities on the expedition ship.
C. To show a preference for comfortable adventure.
D. To highlight the hardships of the past explorers.
33. What makes soft adventure hard to define
A. Subjective understandings. B. Lack of standards.
C. Variation among programs. D. Cost suitability.
34. What can be inferred about soft adventure from paragraph 4
A. It is a product of social development.
B. People’s physical fitness is decreasing.
C. Digital devices has taken over the life.
D. It results from various combined forces.
35. What’s the best title of the text
A. Adventure Is Becoming Soft B. Adventure Think Twice
C. Unlocking Soft Adventure D. For Fun Or For Adventure Your Choice

I was visiting the US as a 23-year-old with my mother and her sister. Without thinking twice, the three of us decided to road trip across the border to Vancouver to catch the tail end of the city’s World Expo. We were young at heart and foolishly optimistic, assuming we’d be able to find accommodation when we got there. The Expo had drawn crowds from all over the world, and every hotel room within fifty miles seemed to have been booked months in advance.
With no mobile phones guiding us, we dragged our feet from one hotel to the next, our luggage growing heavier with each rejection. The summer heat was constant, and my mother’s hopeful smile began to disappear. Before long, it occurred to us that such a strategy was totally inefficient, so we headed for Vancouver’s visitor centre. I remember the centre being unbearably busy, packed with other panicked accommodation hunters and close to shutting up shop for the day. Defeat was setting in. But there was a lovely woman behind the counter who made it her personal mission to help us, tirelessly telephoning every accommodation provider she could think of – motels, hotels, bed and breakfasts, even caravan parks—all without success.
Just as we were wondering if we were going to sleep in the car, she told us the office kept a list of Vancouver residents the centre could contact for emergency accommodation. I don’t know how many people she called, but after what felt like an eternity(很长一段世界), she hung up and shook her head. “I’m so sorry,” she said quietly. “No one is available tonight.”
Our last bit of hope was gone. My mother’s shoulders dropped, and my great-aunt let out a heavy sigh. We stood there in the almost empty visitor centre, too tired even to speak. Defeat was no longer just setting in—it had taken us over completely. The woman behind the counter, whose name we never learned, watched us with deep sympathy.

第二节
读后续写范文
Instead of sending us away, she said, “You can stay with me tonight.” We were too surprised to speak. Before we could refuse, she had already turned off the lights, picked up her bag, and led us out to her car. We drove to a small but tidy apartment on the edge of the city. When she opened the door, we saw a comfort living room. “It’s somewhat tiny,” she said with a warm smile, “but you can sleep here.” She quickly prepared the sofa with clean blankets, then served us some soup and bread. That night, we fell asleep feeling like we had found a friend, not just a place to stay.
Looking back on the trip, getting to know kind people was part of the joy of travelling. The Expo’s sights have disappeared from my memory, but that woman’s kindness never has. She had no reason to help us—she could have simply gone home. Instead, she made countless phone calls and finally opened her own home to three strangers. Travel gives us beautiful views, but its deepest gift is the warmth of the woman. Years later, I still try to pass on that kindness. A safe place to sleep and a bowl of soup may be small things, but to someone far from home, they mean everything.
