The “Go West” programme is a voluntary service programme which sends college graduates (毕业生) to work in less developed areas in China for 1 to 3 years. This national programme covers education, medical care, farming technology and so on. Many areas have benefited from the programme since it started in 2003, and Sheyit is among them.
Sheyit Primary School is a faraway village school in Xinjiang. Thanks to the “Go West” programme, many young graduates have arrived here to help. Although they come from different places across China, they all share the same wish: to bring hope and knowledge to the children and lead them to a brighter future in this way.
Those volunteer teachers at Sheyit Primary School devote (奉献) themselves fully to teaching the children and taking good care of them. They set clear rules in class and expect students to finish homework on time. They find that many parents are busy herding (放牧) animals and have little time to help their children with homework. The teachers work extra (额外的) hours so that they can help the students with their study. “This is where I find the true meaning of my life,” a volunteer teacher here said. “When I see my students grow through my lessons, their progress becomes my honour.”
The students also greatly treasure their teachers’ teaching and care. They describe their teachers as being like the sun. They love going to school so much that some even come on weekends to study! Now all of them dream big and study hard towards their dreams.
“When active students meet hard-working and caring teachers, improvement is only a matter of time. Our school is no longer the worst in the city,” said Jin Wenbin, the leader of Sheyit Primary School. Since 2023, the school has produced many graduates who have done very well in local exams and got into top middle schools in Xinjiang.
1.How does the programme help these less developed areas in China
2.How long has the “Go West” programme been in service
3.Why do volunteer teachers at Sheyit Primary School work extra hours
4.According to Jin Wenbin, what is the reason for the school’s improvement
5.If you plan to join this programme in the future, what will you do to help the students

Chinese writer Wang Zengqi once wrote, “When I arrive in a new place... I prefer to visit the local farmers’ market to see live chickens and ducks, fresh vegetables and bright fruits. It’s lively and brings me a sense of the joy of life.”
Nowadays, more people feel the same. They love to explore farmers’ markets wherever they visit. These traditional markets, once just local shopping places, are attracting visitors during holidays, especially the young. They think visiting a city without walking around farmers’ markets is a waste of a trip. There they can enjoy delicious food, local culture, and the real nature of a city.
Luo Yan, a travel lover, travels around markets nationwide. In Xi’an, he enjoyed tasty Roujiamo, while in Inner Mongolia, he tasted the famous air-dried beef. Foreign travellers, too, see these markets as interesting windows into Chinese daily life. They talk with sellers though they have language difficulties, and they can’t stop trying local snacks. They are touched by the energy of Chinese daily life.
The popularity of farmers’ markets among visitors shows an important change—from a focus on scenic spots to deeper experiences of local life.

Located in Africa, the Sahara Desert covers 30 per cent of the whole continent. Known as “the great desert” in Arabic, it is about 9 million square kilometres in size, with a history of over 4.6 million years, making it one of the oldest places in the world.
As the world’s largest hot desert, the Sahara is extremely dry and hot all year round. However, not all deserts are hot. For example, scientists regard Antarctica as a typical cold desert.
Most of the Sahara is rocky land. Besides, it also has grasslands, lakes, mountains and sand seas, which look like endless oceans of sand. When the wind blows, the sand looks like waves.
Life in the Sahara is difficult. Around 2 million people live in this area. They usually move from place to place. There is water in a few parts of the Sahara, and some people live in these places all year round.
Few animals can live in a place with such a dry and hot climate. They must adapt to survive. Camels can live for a long time without water, and can drink over 100 litres of water in just 13 minutes. Fennec foxes have large ears to help their bodies stay cool.
Today, the Sahara is getting even bigger. It is 10 per cent larger than it was a century ago. But why is it growing Some scientists believe that part of the reason is climate change. As temperatures rise, summers in Africa grow hotter and less rain falls. Water bodies get smaller and the ground gets drier and drier. If we do not take effective measures, the desert will keep growing!
11.How old is the Sahara Desert according to the passage
12.Where can some people live all year round in the Sahara
13.What special ability do fennec foxes have to live in the hot desert
14.Why is the Sahara Desert becoming bigger and bigger these days
15.What can we humans do to stop the desert from growing
The world is full of exciting places to explore. Do you always want to try somewhere new Yet, many people choose to revisit (重游) some places instead. Do you know why
First, family and friends are an important reason. When people have family members or friends living in another place, they’re likely (可能的)to spend their vacation time there. They can catch up on each other’s lives, share stories and laugh together. Being with loved ones makes their vacation more meaningful.
Second, happy memories bring people back to the places they know. If a past trip is special, travellers often want to experience it again. For example, older travellers enjoy revisiting the places they first explored when they were young. These familiar places can recall their happy moments from the past.
Third, it’s important to have a feeling of safety and relaxation. When people step into new places, some may feel anxious (焦虑的). However, in familiar places, they already know what to expect. With no worries there, they can enjoy themselves. This is why visiting familiar places is relaxing.
Next time you want to find peace and joy during your vacation, why not try revisiting familiar places

Jim Green has been in China for more than two years. He has been to many interesting places in Beijing but he has not yet been to many other parts of China. Last week he went to Mount Emei in Sichuan Province with his family.
Many people like to travel by air, but Jim thinks that traveling by train is the best. It is much cheaper and far more enjoyable than a trip by air. They had a wonderful train ride to Chengdu before they went on to Mount Emei by bus.
Early one morning, they took a taxi to Beijing West Railway Station. The station was very lively. There were bookshops, food shops and stores selling all kinds of things. Mrs. Green bought some fruit, food and bottles of water to take on the train. She said that it was better to get some food before they got on the train because food on the train was usually too expensive.
The train was quite comfortable, and there weren’t too many people around them. The Greens could stand up and walk around. It was a long journey, but none of them felt tired. They kept watching the beautiful scenery (景色) out of the window. They walked, laughed and played cards. The conductor (乘务员) kept coming to offer them hot water and selling them magazines. People nearby talked with each other. A young man practiced speaking English with Mr. Green. Jim thought the train was like a big moving party. He listened and then fell fast asleep.

In the near future, we may be able to taste food and drinks “online” before buying them. A new tool made by scientists at Ohio State University in the US makes it possible to share taste on the internet.
When we eat or drink, our teeth and tongues(舌头)break the food into little pieces. During this process, very small things called molecules(分子)come out of these pieces. The taste buds(味蕾)on our tongues catch these molecules and “tell” the brain about them. The brain then knows how the food tastes.
The “e-Taste” tool has two main parts. The first part works like our tongues. It checks for five special chemicals(化学成分)in food or drinks, said The Guardian. These chemicals give different flavors like sweet, sour and salty.
After getting this information, the first part can send it to the second part of the tool, even if it’s in another city. The second part then mixes the five chemicals with water to make new liquids(液体). People can taste these flavors by drinking the liquids.
Scientists believe “e-Taste” can be used in many ways to improve online experiences. For example, it can help make online classes and gaming experiences more fun.

Ice covers much of the Arctic Ocean (北冰洋). Some pieces of ice are huge, like moving islands. As temperatures have increased, however, some of the ice has begun to disappear. Scientists have discovered huge waves in the Arctic waters.
The waves were discovered by accident in May 2010. Scientist Aleksey Marchenko and his students set out on a trip. They wanted to study the icy waters.
On May 2, the ship traveled east and stopped next to a large chunk of ice around 50 miles from the small island Hopen. Marchenko prepared to lead his students out onto the ice.
“We were ready to go but when I went out, I discovered many cracks (裂缝) around,” he remembers.
He decided to move the ship deeper into the ice to keep safe. The farther in they went, he thought, the harder the ice would become. As they pushed forward, however, the ship experienced small waves, and then bigger ones. Soon, the waves broke up the ice around the ship into thousands of smaller pieces.
Within an hour, Marchenko and his team saw a wave that was about 13 feet high. The ship’s navigation (航行) system finally recorded the largest waves. They were more than 20 feet in height. The waves were so strong that they forced huge pieces of ice to jump up and down, breaking the ice into smaller pieces within just one hour. Scientists have never imagined that the process could happen so fast. The waves in these areas used to be small.
The speed and force of the huge waves there make it impossible to know in advance when they are coming.
That could be dangerous for navigators and local communities who are unprepared for huge waves or depend on sea ice to protect them. Wildlife like polar bears and walruses that depend on sea ice to live are also in danger.
Some scientists think people will soon see even bigger waves in these icy waters. As waves break up ice, the seas will become more open, and the waves will get even stronger. There are stormy times ahead.
61.When did Marchenko and his students discover huge waves in the Arctic waters
62.Why has the Arctic ice begun to disappear
63.How high were the largest waves recorded by the navigation system
64.Who may be in danger from the huge waves
65.What can we do to protect the Arctic
Chaka Salt Lake (茶卡盐湖) lies in Qinghai Province, China. It sits at an altitude (海拔) of about 3,100 metres and covers an area of about 105 square kilometres. It is rich in salt with a heavy salt bed close to the lake surface. That makes the lake a main source (来源) of salt in our country. When the weather is clear, the lake offers beautiful reflections (倒影) of the blue sky. That is why people call it the “sky mirror (天空之镜)”.
Because of its wonderful views, the lake is seen as one of the “must-visit” places in China. The beautiful sunrise and sunset views are the most attractive. Every July, large numbers of visitors begin to crowd to Chaka Salt Lake. And the situation usually lasts till the end of August, because they just don’t want to miss the best time to go there. It is believed that with the summer breeze (微风), breathing in the salty air is especially good for lungs. If you want to go on a trip to the lake, the following tips may be helpful:
*The salt in the lake can’t be eaten directly.
*Wear sunglasses and a hat because of the strong sunshine.
*You may want to take quite a few photos, so you’d better take your camera with you.
*Prepare some medicine beforehand so that you can deal with altitude sickness in time.
Travelling to such a beautiful world of salt with snowy mountains and green grass around, you will feel like you are in a fairyland. But you also need to protect the natural beauty while enjoying it.

Wendy Chen decided to challenge herself by climbing Mount Tai, a well-known mountain in eastern China. But there was one problem: she couldn’t find a friend to join her for the five-hour trip. Rather than give up her plan, the 25-year-old hired a “climbing buddy”, a young man with rich outdoor experience, to be with her and support her to the 5,000-foot peak.
Known in Chinese as “pei pa”, the young Chinese join strangers on their journeys up mountains for a price. It’s becoming popular now. Young people, healthy and active, often college students, advertise themselves on social media. They tell people their height, how strong they are and their hiking experience. They usually ask for 200 to 600 yuan for one trip.
During the climb, these “buddies” try their best to make climbers keep going. They sing songs, tell jokes, play music and give them words of encouragement. Sometimes they even carry bags, hold hands and pull the climbers up.
Chen and her climbing buddy’s journey began at around 8:00 p.m., so that she could arrive in time for the famous sunrise. After checking her health condition, her climbing buddy planned a suitable route and carried her backpack the whole way. At the moment the sun rose, he showed Chen a national flag so that she could take a photo. Though Chen felt his photography skills still had room to improve, she regarded her climbing buddy as “satisfactory”. Chen was supposed to pay 350 yuan, but she was so pleased that she offered 50 yuan more.

Pudong, a part of Shanghai, is now one of the busiest areas in China. Walk through its streets, and you’ll see countless tall buildings, busy companies, and crowds of people. But if you could go back to the 1980s, you would find a very quiet place—small boats on the water, a few low houses, and fields all around.
Pudong changed so much because of many big development projects. The local government worked hard to turn this area into a modern center. Over time, more and more land was used to build tall buildings, wide roads, and new facilities. This made the land here very valuable. Today, hundreds of international companies have their offices in Pudong, bringing jobs and energy to the area.
Transportation in Pudong is now easier than ever. There are six big bridges and five underwater tunnels connecting it to other parts of Shanghai. Every day, thousands of buses, cars, and trucks use these roads. For those who prefer trains, the underground runs under the river, taking people to their destinations quickly.
Tourism is also a big part of Pudong’s life now. The Oriental Pearl TV Tower and Jinmao Tower stand tall, attracting millions of visitors every year. They come to take photos, enjoy the city views from the top, and feel the excitement of this modern area.
Pudong’s story is like a fast-growing tree. It started small, but with care and hard work, it has become a wonderful place that people from all over the world love to visit.

Over two hundred people were homeless after the storm in total.
A farmer Mr. Tan, said that the storm began early in the morning and lasted for over an hour.

The world’s oldest and largest iceberg, known as A23a is moving again after being stuck (被困住) in one place for many years. It’s now moving through the Southern Ocean, near Antarctica.
A23a is about 1,312 feet thick and covers 1,418 square miles-just a little larger than Rhode Island. The BAS said the huge iceberg’s journey included many interesting scientific events. In 1986, it broke off from Antarctica’s Filchner Ice shelf. Soon after, it got stuck on the ground under the sea, which is common for large icebergs, and remained there for more than 30 years.
As parts of the iceberg melted underwater, it became lighter and started moving. Experts said this process is natural and probably has nothing to do with climate change. In 2020, A23a began moving north. In August 2024, it got caught in a column of rotating water (旋转的水柱) and stuck there until not long ago.
“It’s exciting to see A23a on the move again after months of being stuck,” said Andrew Meijers, an oceanographer (海洋学家) with the BAS. He and other experts will follow where the iceberg travels and study how it affects the ocean ecosystems it passes through.
95.Where is the iceberg A23a moving now
96.How large is the iceberg A23a in area
97.When did A23a break off from Antarctica’s Filchner Ice Shelf
98.How do you feel about the movement of the iceberg A23a Why (Write 30 words or more.)
