Writing a news report about natural disasters is a useful skill. A good news report has clear structure and correct facts. It usually includes a headline, lead paragraph, body and ending.
The headline is short and tells the main event. The lead paragraph comes first. It answers the key questions: what, when, where, who and why. The body gives more details about the disaster, such as damage, death number and rescue work. The ending tells about future plans or rebuilding.
When you write a news report, you should use past tense for the event and present perfect tense for rescue work. You should write in the third person and give true information. Do not add your own feelings.
Making a leaflet is also helpful. A disaster leaflet for communities introduces a kind of disaster, its causes and effects. It tells people what to do before, during and after the disaster. It often uses clear pictures and simple language so everyone can understand easily.
Leaflets can be put up in communities, schools and hospitals. They help people learn safety knowledge quickly. Good leaflets can save lives when disasters come.

Qingming Festival, also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day, is a traditional festival for Chinese people to remember their family members who have passed away. It usually comes on April 4th, 5th or 6th. And it has a long history of over 2,500 years. The weather during this time is often warm but rainy, with flowers coming out and grass turning green.
On this day, families go to the cemeteries (公墓). They clean the tombs (坟墓) and place fresh flowers to honor their ancestors (祖先). Some also bring food or drinks to share with their ancestors. Even though people feel sad, this activity helps them keep in touch with their family history.
Besides tomb-sweeping, there is another tradition during the Qingming Festival called “stepping on the green”. There are many activities such as going hiking, flying kites, or having picnics in the countryside. People like stepping on the green because it’s a great chance for them to enjoy the warm spring and have fun with their families.
A special food for Qingming is Qingtuan (a kind of green rice balls). It is made of sticky rice and green plants. The green colour stands for the freshness of spring.

Second, at home, robots will help with daily tasks. For example, smart kitchens will cook meals automatically (自动地), and robot cleaners will keep houses tidy. People will turn on or off lights and TVs just by using their voices or hand signs.
Third, in healthcare, tiny robots in the human body will check people’s health and deal with problems early. Doctors could use VR glasses to examine (检查) patients (病人) far away. This will save time and make medical care better.
Finally, people might spend too much time with technology, however. To solve this, outdoor activities will become more popular.

With the development of technology, our city life is becoming more and more “smart”. Here are some great technologies that make our cities “smart”.
Sensors are like eyes in every corner of the city. They can see and feel things by collecting data (数据) on people and the environment.
It is like the blood vessels (血管) of a city, connecting everything to the Internet. Imagine when you are nearly home, and your smart watch can tell your home to turn on the lights. This can become a reality with the Internet of things.
5G provides high-speed wireless Internet. It is what makes the Internet of things possible. The speed of 5G can be up to 10Gbps. With such a speed, we can download a film in just a few seconds.
AI can also help to deal with data. More importantly, it learns from the data and becomes a smart helper for us. AI can work as a delivery person, a tour guide, or even help design cars and make people’s work safer.
Baidu Map and Gaode Map are two typical online maps. They help people find their way from one place to another. Some online maps can update real-time data on cities. With their help, people can find out the busiest road and plan the best route when traveling.

It’s often said that you can choose your friends but you can’t choose your family. It’s true. Sibling (兄弟姐妹) bonds (纽带) can last for life and may even help our brain health. That’s according to a new study by researchers in the US.
The research team used large amounts of data (数据) from the project that began in 1957. It followed 10,000 US high school graduates and their siblings.
The participants were also asked to look back on their childhood and researchers tested the thinking abilities of some older adults by telephone interviews.
The study finds that those who get along well with their siblings as children are more likely to keep in close touch with them as they get older. However, those who aren’t close to their siblings during childhood often also manage to stay lasting relationships with them when they grow up. And this is important, because the study also finds people who often keep in touch with their siblings in the 50s, 60s and 70s have better brain health in the 80s.

In the near future, we may be able to taste food and drinks “online” before buying them. A new tool made by scientists at Ohio State University in the US makes it possible to share taste on the internet.
When we eat or drink, our teeth and tongues(舌头)break the food into little pieces. During this process, very small things called molecules(分子)come out of these pieces. The taste buds(味蕾)on our tongues catch these molecules and “tell” the brain about them. The brain then knows how the food tastes.
The “e-Taste” tool has two main parts. The first part works like our tongues. It checks for five special chemicals(化学成分)in food or drinks, said The Guardian. These chemicals give different flavors like sweet, sour and salty.
After getting this information, the first part can send it to the second part of the tool, even if it’s in another city. The second part then mixes the five chemicals with water to make new liquids(液体). People can taste these flavors by drinking the liquids.
Scientists believe “e-Taste” can be used in many ways to improve online experiences. For example, it can help make online classes and gaming experiences more fun.

Children in one village have a new place to spend their winter vacation—a library built by a local charity group Dashan Xiaoai, which means “big mountain, small love”. The library is located in Banwan village, Guizhou Province, which became a must-visit place for tourists during holidays.
This is the eighth library set up by the charity to help rural people, especially children. Zhou Beilei, the head of the charity, has worked on rural education for more than 10 years. She found that rural children do not have a place to spend quality time after school. This is why we decided to build libraries for the children, offer them meaningful activities and develop their love for reading, ”Zhou says.
The charity’s first library, located in Qiaoma town, opened in March 2019. It is divided into an adult area and a designated (指定的) space for children. It also organizes all kinds of after-school activities. To encourage them to read, children can join a free rewards (奖励) program and get points by reading books. A Farewell Song
No dust is raised on the road wet with morning rain;
The willows by the hotel look so fresh and green.
I invite you to drink a cup of wine again;
West of the sunny pass no more friends will be seen.
(Translated by Xu Yuanchong)
Friendship is one of the most amazing things in the world. But friends won’t be beside you forever, sometimes they will leave you because of moving to work or study. It might be a little sad to say goodbye to your teachers and classmates. This same feeling was shared more than 1,000 years ago, when the Tang dynasty poet Wang Wei (701-761) had to say goodbye to his friend Yuan Er.
The poem begins with a beautiful morning scene. After the rain, the road is clean and free of dust, and the willows by the hotel are fresh and green. On that day’s morning, Yuan Er is leaving for a faraway place called Anxi (in today’s Xinjiang).
The last two lines are the most well-known. The poet invites Yuan to drink wine because he knows that life in Anxi will be tough. Most cities in China were prosperous (繁华的) during the Tang dynasty (618-907), but the western areas were quite desolate (荒凉的). Wang thinks the journey to the west will be full of hardship. So when Wang says “I invite you to drink a cup of wine again”, he is pouring both his care and good wishes into the cup. This sincere love for his friend made this poem popular back then and it remains popular today.

At just 14 years old, Ryan Hickman from San Juan Hills High School, US, has made waves (引起轰动) with a beach clean-up campaign (运动). On April 20th, he and many volunteers from Project 3R, the nonprofit (非营利机构) he created, started a five-week campaign at five beaches along the Southern California coast and some in Mexico to remove trash (清除垃圾).
“The trash ends up in the ocean, and animals are eating it,” Hickman told The Orange County Register. “Picking up a piece of trash may save a turtle’s life.”
In 2012, Ryan Hickman started to pick up the trash around the beaches. Ever since then, he and some volunteers have collected about 2 million bottles and cans (金属罐) from beaches, lakes and rivers.
From a young age, Hickman had developed a love for recycling and had always liked trash trucks. He put the two interests together and began collecting recyclables (可回收物) to raise money. In 2017, Hickman gave away a $10, 000 (about 72,000 yuan) check to the PMMC after picking up 50, 000 pounds of trash and more than 200, 000 recyclable bottles.
Along with organizing volunteer cleanups, Hickman has also traveled worldwide, speaking to kids about caring for the planet and oceans. At the Ocean Institute in California, he started a program where primary school students clean local beaches and then board (登船) the institute’s teaching ship to learn about pollution’s influence.

In a marathon, have you ever seen some special runners holding signs with different finish times They are marathon pacers (马拉松配速员), also known as “rabbits”. They are usually experienced volunteers who guide a group of runners at a set speed.
Their work is to help others finish the race within their goal time. Usually, there are about 12 pacers in a marathon. Each of them leads a different pace group. Many runners achieve their best finish times with pacers’ help.
Pacers play an important part in a marathon. Firstly, they help runners save energy and avoid slowing down. For example, if you go out too fast in the first half of the race, you will run out of energy quickly and slow down in the second half. With a pacer, you don’t have to think too hard about your pace. You just need to keep up with your pacer. Besides, during the hardest part of the race, pacers support runners by encouraging them.
It’s meaningful but hard to be a pacer. Take Li Jun as an example. He began his marathon journey in 2015. Then he became an active runner. Before he became a pacer, he had not only achieved many good results but also got rich experience in running. In 2018, he became a pacer for the first time, leading a group of runners towards a goal time of 3 hours and 30 minutes. “I want to help others achieve goals.” Li Jun said. Since then, he has continued to serve as a pacer in many marathons.
Pacers are the real heroes of the marathon. They teach us that with courage and support, everyone can overcome (克服) challenges and reach their dreams.

Birdwatching is a popular hobby. Millions of people enjoy it. But besides learning to identify (识别) birds, could it actually shape our brains A new study says yes.
Scientists wanted to know if expert birdwatchers’ brains are different from beginners’. They studied 58 adults. Half were experienced birdwatchers; the other half had much less experience. They put all into brain scanners (扫描仪) to study brain structure and activity while the participants (参与者) identified birds.
Compared with beginners, experts showed more organized brain structure in areas linked to attention and seeing. The more organized the brain, the better they could identify birds. Interestingly, these same brain areas were also active when experts identified less familiar birds.
This suggests that birdwatching over time may change the brain. Another recent study found that people who did more creative activities had younger-looking brains, which was linked to their skill level.
Besides these brain changes, birdwatching helps brain health in other ways. Joining a birdwatching group offers social contact, which is good for the brain. Birdwatching also has to do with physical activity and time in nature, both of which improve brain health. It gets people away from screens. Finally, it helps reduce stress, which is harmful to the brain.
There is still much to learn about birdwatching’s effects on the brain. Though it cannot replace a healthy diet, good sleep, or daily exercise, it may still do your brain some good.
92.Why did the scientists compare expert birdwatchers and beginners
93.What did the scientists find out from their study

“Mobook” gets its idea from “Books on the Underground”, a community project in London. The purpose of “Books on the Underground” is to encourage people to read more. Zhang Wei, the CEO of the Fair also wanted to do something in China. He sent an e-mail to Ms Cordelia Oxley, the leader of “Books on the Underground”, describing his plan and explaining the rules of “Mobook”. The leader replied to him in just two hours, saying that she thought the idea was great and she would offer help if needed.
But “Mobook” project is a little different from that in London. It has its own online system. People who want to donate books must give their information online. QR code stickers (二维码标签) are then sent to their addresses. The book owners should stick them on the books before donating books and readers can know where the books are from with the help of QR codes.
