words: vigor; vista; listlessness; faculty; hazily; symmetry; thrilling; gaze; companionship; tenderness; imprint; hasty; glimpse; condense; inhabitant; hearty; overtone; hint; petty

sentence patterns:
We should live each day with a gentleness, a vigor, and a keenness of appreciation which are often lost when time stretches out before us in an endless vista.
Those who have never suffered the loss of sight or hearing seldom make the fullest use of these faculties.
Their eyes and ears take in all sights and sounds hazily, without concentration and with little appreciation.
I feel the delicate symmetry of a leaf and I touch the branches of trees hopefully in search of a bud, the first sign of awakening Nature after her winter's sleep.
On the first day, I should want to see the people whose kindness, gentleness and companionship have made my life worth living.
First I should like to gaze long upon the face of my dear teacher, who opened the outer world to me and accomplished the difficult task of my education with sympathetic tenderness and patience.
The third and last day would be spent in the workday world of the present, so New York City, with so many activities and conditions of men, becomes my destination.
I hurry to the top of the Empire State Building, anxious to see with my own eyes the city below me.
Always my eyes are wide open to all the sights of both happiness and suffering so that I may probe deep and add to my understanding of how people work and live.
In the evening I should run away to the theatre, to a genuinely funny play, so that I might appreciate the overtones of comedy in the human spirit.
Make the most of every sense; glory in all the pleasure and beauty which the world reveals to you through the several means of contact provided by Nature.

Ⅰ. 阅读理解。
Zero emission large passenger aircraft powered by hydrogen will be technically possible in five years, according to Airbus, but they will not enter service for at least a decade as the price of the fuel needs to come down.
The prediction comes from Glenn Llewellyn, vice president of zero emissions technology at the pan European plane maker. He said that while Airbus planned to demonstrate hydrogen powered aircraft in 2025, “over the next 10 years, hydrogen won't be more economical than the fossil fuel equivalent”.
Step Ⅴ: Homework.
For passengers to be flying genuinely emissions free aboard hydrogen powered planes—which emit only water and heat—their fuel needs to come from hydrogen produced via renewable sources such as wind and solar, he added.
In an interview ahead of the BloombergNEF London Summit, Mr Llewellyn said, “We already see massive increases in the amount of renewable energy being produced across the world. Wind energy production has multiplied by two over the last five years and solar energy production has multiplied by four.”
A further hurdle is building up the ecosystem that hydrogen aircraft, along with other forms of transport, will need. This ranges from creating the fuel from electrolysis to split water into hydrogen and oxygen powered by renewable energy, to the actual transport of the gas and fuelling systems for it at airports.
However, Mr Llewellyn predicted that there was enough interest in the sector to make this happen. He added, “There are a number of independent institutes that have mapped out how hydrogen costs can come down over the next decades. We see a 30% reduction in renewable hydrogen costs in 2030 compared to where it is today, and a 50% reduction in renewable hydrogen costs by 2050.”
【文章大意】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了零排放氢动力飞机的研发现状和未来,还说明了氢动力飞机的一些特性和优点以及仍然面临的挑战。
( ) 1. What can we know about the hydrogen powered aircraft according to the passage
A. It will be an unrealistic dream.
B. The cost of its fuel keeps rising.
C. It will be accessible within a decade.
D. Renewable energy makes it environmentally friendly.
【解析】 推理判断题。根据第三段“For passengers to be flying … come from hydrogen produced via renewable sources such as wind and solar, he added.”可知,氢动力飞机使用可再生能源,很环保。故选D。
D
( ) 2. What did Mr Llewellyn say about renewable energy
A. It gains growing popularity throughout the world.
B. More wind energy has been produced than solar energy.
C. Hydrogen can only be generated from wind and solar energy.
D. Hydrogen will be cheaper than fossil fuel in the coming ten years.
【解析】 推理判断题。根据第四段Llewellyn说的话可知,世界各地可再生能源产量大幅增长。风能在过去五年增加了一倍,太阳能增加了三倍。由此可推知,可再生能源在全世界越来越受欢迎。故选A。
A
( ) 3. What does the underlined word “________” in Paragraph 5 refer to
A. Ecosystem. B. Challenge.
C. Aircraft. D. Prediction.
【解析】 代词指代题。根据画线词上文“A further hurdle is building up the ecosystem that hydrogen aircraft, along with other forms of transport, will need.”可知,这一挑战包括以可再生能源为动力将水电解成氢和氧的氢燃料生产,运输氢燃料的交通工具以及机场的燃料补给系统。由此推知,画线词指的是“挑战”。故选B。
B
( ) 4. What is Mr Llewellyn's attitude towards the future of hydrogen powered aircraft
A. Objective. B. Optimistic.
C. Doubtful. D. Pessimistic.

All the workers had left that day and I saw that the swimming pool had been built and was full of water. A white toy poodle(玩具贵宾犬) was swimming around the 4 . When it saw me, and after a few more barks from Sam, it swam towards me and I was able to 7 it out of the water. I took the toy poodle home, dried it off and noticed a collar 8 a name Midge, and an address, which was a five minute walk from my home. So I took Midge home to his very 9 owners. But that was not the end of the story.
Some three weeks later, I was walking down the road when I was 10 by two fierce Dobermans(杜宾犬). They obviously had no 11 of letting me pass. 12 ,Sam ran from a house behind me. Barking, he stood between the Dobermans and me. There he remained 13 my four legged offenders withdrew to their home.

As we came down to breakfast that morning, with very shiny faces and clean aprons, we found Dad alone in the dining room.
“Happy New Year, Dad! Where is Mom?” we cried.
“A little boy came begging and said they were starving at home, so your mother went to see and—ah, here she is.”
As Dad spoke, in came Mom, looking very cold, rather sad, and very much excited.
“Children, don't begin till you hear what I have to say,” she cried and we sat staring at her, with the breakfast untouched before us.
“Not far away from here, lies a poor woman with a little newborn baby. Six children are huddled into one bed to keep from freezing, for they have no fire. There is nothing to eat over there; and the oldest boy came here to tell me they were starving this bitter cold day. My little girls, will you give them your breakfast, as a New Year's gift?”
We sat silent for a minute, and looked at the nice, hot porridge, creamy milk, and good bread and butter.
“I wish we'd eaten it up,” thought I, for I was rather a selfish child, and very hungry.
“I'm so glad you come before we begin,” said Nan, cheerfully.
“May I go and help carry it to the poor little children?” asked Beth, who had the tenderest heart.
“I can carry the last pot,” said little May, proudly giving the thing she loved best.
“And I shall take all the porridge,” I burst in, heartily ashamed of my first feeling.
“You shall put on your things and help me, and when we come back, we'll get something to eat,” said Mom, beginning to pile the bread and butter into a big basket.

We were soon ready and set out.__________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
With May and Beth carrying the pot and I holding the porridge, we closely trailed Mom. We plodded forward in the harsh wind and heavy snow. Then appeared a shabby house and in we popped. What greeted our eyes shocked us: at one end of the bed huddled six kids shivering with cold and the other lay a weak woman who just gave birth to a fragile child. Dirty pans and pots scattered about, with cockroaches creeping on the cracked floor.
Seeing the house totally in a mess, we began to work immediately._______ _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
May helped sweep the floor. Beth and Nan cleaned the sink. Mom and I started a fire, which immediately heated up the place. The oldest brother joined us and set the table, which was now laid with lukewarm porridge, creamy milk and yummy bread. All the work done, we sat around and enjoyed the delicious food with Mom complimenting it was the most meaningful New Year she had ever had. Meanwhile, tears of gratitude twinkled in the family's eyes as no words could convey with their appreciation toward us.

Ⅱ. 阅读理解。
Few of nature's animals are as misunderstood as bats. We at the US Fish and Wildlife Service want to set the record straight and help others understand the importance of bats. Though often feared and disliked as bad creatures of the night, bats are vital to the health of our environment and our economy.
Bats play an essential role in pest control, pollinating plants and spreading seeds. Recent studies estimate that bats eat enough pests to save more than $1 billion per year in crop damage and pesticide costs in the United States corn industry alone. While many bats eat insects, others feed on nectar and provide pollination for plants like peaches and bananas. A third bat food source is fruit, leading to another important role—seed dispersal. Fruit eating bats can account for as much as 95% of the seed dispersal, responsible for early growth in recently cleared rainforests.
Unfortunately, bats are declining across the globe. Many bats are needlessly killed because people do not understand the important role bats play in a healthy ecosystem. For bats that hibernate in caves, human activities resulting in loss of habitat and interruptions during hibernation are harmful. Making matters worse, a fungal disease called white nose syndrome has claimed the lives of more than 5 million bats since its discovery in 2006. The fungus can be transmitted from bat to bat, cave to bat and even cave to cave. Since many bats hibernate in the same caves over the winter, the fungus can kill an entire bat colony once established.
We are now working to protect bats, research treatments to stop the spread of white nose syndrome and raise awareness about just how incredible, and vulnerable(脆弱的), bats are. We complete bat surveys and use bands and transmitters to learn more about movements, habitats and lifespans. Hopefully, the more we know about them, the greater the chance they will survive.

The mascot for the Beijing Winter Olympics, Bing Dwen Dwen, has enjoyed an increasing rise in popularity. It seems to have taken the gold for the most favoured prop for athlete snapshots. Such has been the surge(激增) in popularity that products with its image are difficult to get in the Winter Olympic Village. 1 Some say the mascot has become the best ambassador for the Beijing Winter Olympics.
. 2 Its shape combines the image of a panda with an ice crystal shell, inspired by the “ice ribbon” of the National Speed Skating Oval. The flowing colour lines symbolize the ice and snow sports track. The design conveys the charm of China and expresses the beauty of the Olympic Games.
There have been continual demands to increase supply and end the shortage. A toy manufacturing company, located in Qidong, Nantong, Jiangsu Province, is one of the three companies in China that participate in designing and manufacturing the mascot. 3 In the production workshop, the semi finished Bing Dwen Dwens pile upon the processing tabletop. Workers put on a transparent “coat”, install it on a fixed base, and wrap it in a special packaging box. 4 A worker, surnamed Shen, is responsible for installing the base for Bing Dwen Dwen. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I'm originally from Orange County, California, where I had the pleasure and honor of serving as a Newport Beach ocean lifeguard for five seasons. Whenever I could, I got shifts working the Point. If you wanted to save lives, that's where you worked. The Point was known for its massive rip currents(激流).
So, late in a shift, I was working Tower 15. Two blocks to my right was another guard named Mike, working Tower 17. I'd known Mike for a number of years. Mike had a rough upbringing. You can tell just by looking at him. He has a number of really frightening tattoos(文身), and his bald head shows the scar he got from a broken beer bottle. Maybe he wasn't the friendliest guard on the beach. I admit, I didn't really get along with Mike. But everything he lacked in friendly appearance and social skills, he more than made up for in lifesaving ability.
He called me over the phone and said, “Hey, I got a couple of kids. I gotta go and give them a warning. Keep an eye on us.”
I said, “Sure,” and hung up.
Anytime you get out of your tower, you're supposed to let somebody else know, in case a situation develops. And sure enough, as soon as he hung up the phone, a rip was snapped up under these two kids, and they're getting sucked out. Mike saw it before it's happening, and he was running full speed toward the ocean. I scanned the water. All I saw was two small noses bobbing(上下浮动) in the water.
I dropped my binos(望远镜) and I called in and said, “Double rescue 17—he's out. I'm going.” Mike was already punching through the surf line. By now, the mother of the two kids realized what was happening. She was on her feet and screaming.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式作答。
Mike reached the kids—a brother and sister around eight or nine years old. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
He got to the boy first, and when he turned to the girl, he had to reach down into the water and catch her by the hair to pull her back up. Mike swam sideways out of the rip current into the clear water and started to bring them in. When I reached their mother, Mike was in waist deep water. I turned to their mother and said, “Hey, it's gonna be OK. They're safe.” I saw the terror start to drain out of her.
Then the mother glanced back and got her first good look at Mike, as well as his tattoos.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
And a crazy thing happened. I saw a new kind of panic wash over her because of the tattoos on Mike's arms. She rushed up to Mike and snatched her kids. Not even a thank you. Mike just shrugged, and jogged back to his tower. As I jogged back to my tower, I promised myself I'd never let my own fear or prejudice prevent me from recognizing a hero only because I don't see friendly appearance in him.

Ⅰ. 话题拓展阅读。
When Thomas Panek lost his eyesight more than 25 years ago, the avid runner doubted he would ever pursue his lifelong passion again.
Indeed, although Panek had been crazy about running since high school, the idea of running blind seemed altogether too challenging. But he did manage to keep his dream alive—with help from human guides who assisted him on each run.
Step Ⅴ: Homework.
Even so, the real joy of the run—the thrill of independence that comes from conquering a course on your own terms—eluded(躲避) him. “When you're tied to another person, it's no longer your own race,”the 48 year old said. “The independence isn't quite there.”
Then Panek found a friend—indeed, man's best friend—who would help him achieve that sense of purpose. He started running with a guide dog named Gus. Not only did Panek rediscover his love for running, but, along the way, he founded Guiding Eyes for the Blind, an organization dedicated to providing service dogs for the visually disabled.
On March 16, 2019, Gus glided across the finish line with his human at the New York City Half Marathon. At that moment, they both breezed into the history books. Panek, who finished the course in a little more than two hours and 20 minutes, became the first blind runner to complete the race led by dogs.
Brandishing their respective medals, Panek and Gus—who would retire after the race—shared a breathless embrace.“It's a little emotional for me because he's been there with me the whole time,” Panek said.
But Panek was quick to point out that it wasn't just Gus who provided the wind beneath his running shoes. In all, three guide dogs helped him see his way to the finish line. Siblings Westley and Waffle picked up the early legs of the course, each running between five and eight kilometers of the 21 kilometer race.
With retirement looming, it would be the faithful yellow lab's last race. But for Panek, the road ahead remains long and bright—not only for him, but for anyone with a disability who still hopes to run down a dream.

In today's world, technology is a part of daily life. In order to keep civilization hand in hand with technological advances, and to understand the connected future they will have, children in schools have to be taught technical skills. But how can teachers integrate(使……融入)technology into their classroom Here are a couple of ways.
Teach acceptance of connected learning. In the information age, it's only right to teach kids how to jump at connected learning. 1 For example, a tablet PC could be used in art class to draw pictures or even signs for the school.
Use a video chat system to teleconference. The idea of pen pals can be strengthened by video chat systems. 2 In this situation, children will learn how to share experiences and build new relationships from a distance. Teleconferencing is a great way to teach children about teleconferencing etiquette. 3 .
Develop a class wiki or blog. In order to help get your students active in class lessons, you can use a blog or wiki to make them comment on lessons, topics and current events. Students should also be allowed to create new posts about news or their thoughts. 4 .
Create a podcast(播客) for your class. Technology is always about being seen. 5 It can also be used to be heard. Ⅰ. 话题拓展阅读。
During the rosy years of elementary school, I enjoyed sharing my dolls and jokes, which allowed me to keep my high social status. I was the queen of the playground. Then came my tweens and teens, and mean girls and cool kids. They rose in the ranks not by being friendly but by smoking cigarettes, breaking rules and playing jokes on others, among whom I soon found myself.
Step Ⅴ: Homework.
Popularity is a well explored subject in social psychology. Mitch Prinstein, a professor of clinical psychology sorts the popular into two categories: the likable and the status seekers. The likables' plays well with others qualities strengthen schoolyard friendships, jump start interpersonal skills and, when tapped early, are employed ever after in life and work. Then there's the kind of popularity that appears in adolescence: status born of power and even dishonorable behavior.
Enviable as the cool kids may have seemed, Dr Prinstein's studies show unpleasant consequences. Those who were highest in status in high school, as well as those least liked in elementary school, are “most likely to engage in dangerous and risky behavior”.
In one study, Dr Prinstein examined the two types of popularity in 235 adolescents, scoring the least liked, the most liked and the highest in status based on student surveys(调研). “We found that the least well liked teens had become more aggressive over time toward their classmates. But so had those who were high in status. It clearly showed that while likability can lead to healthy adjustment, high status has just the opposite effect on us.”
Dr Prinstein has also found that the qualities that made the neighbors want you on a play date—sharing, kindness, openness—carry over to later years and make you better able to relate and connect with others.
In analyzing his and other research, Dr Prinstein came to another conclusion: Not only is likability related to positive life outcomes, but it is also responsible for those outcomes, too. “Being liked creates opportunities for learning and for new kinds of life experiences that help somebody gain an advantage,” he said.

How did music begin Did our early ancestors first start by beating things together to create rhythm 1 Has music always been important in human society, and if so, why These are some questions explored in a recent article published in Frontiers in Sociology. The answers reveal that the story of music is, in many ways, the story of humans.
So, what is music This is difficult to answer, as everyone has their own idea. Jeremy Montagu, author of the article, says, “ 2 ” A mother humming(哼唱) to calm her baby would probably count as music.
Another important component of music is rhythm. Our early ancestors may have created rhythmic music by clapping their hands. 3 At that time somebody realized that smacking stones or sticks together doesn't hurt your hands as much. Many of these instruments are likely to have been made from soft materials like wood, and so haven't survived. What have survived are bone pipes.
So, we know that music is old, and may have been with us from when humans first evolved. 4 There are many possible functions for music. One is dancing. It is unknown if the first dancers created a musical accompaniment, or if music led to people moving rhythmically. Another obvious reason for music is entertainment, which can be personal or communal. Music can also be used for communication, often over large distances, using instruments such as drums or horns.
“Music leads to bonding, such as bonding between mother and child or bonding between groups,” explains Montagu. “Music keeps workers happy when doing repetitive and otherwise boring work, and helps everyone to move together.” He concludes: “It has even been suggested that music, in causing such bonding, created not only the family but society itself.”
A. Sound that conveys emotion.
B. Were they the earliest forms of music
C. What types of instruments did they use
D. But why did it arise and why has it persisted
E. More importantly, music brings people together.
F. This may be linked to the earliest musical instruments.
G. It is a strong regular repeated pattern of sounds and movements.

Did you know roughly one third of food for human consumption goes to waste Most of it is fresh fruit and vegetables that go bad. The produce dries out or goes bad, which has led scientists to develop ways of coating or sealing the food to keep it fresher for longer. Now research at Rice University reveals there might be a better way.
Scientists discovered that dipping produce like strawberries and bananas into an egg based wash is remarkably good for preserving it. The coating is extremely thick, and made from a mixture of powdered egg whites and yolks(70%), and some wood sourced cellulose to act as a barrier preventing water loss.
What the scientists found was that the egg wash made a significant difference in helping produce stay fresh over a two week observation period. The appearance of the coated fruits and vegetables didn't change much, while the uncoated produce ripened and even rotted within the same time frame. The egg based coating, as it turned out, reduced each fruit's chance to get exposed to oxygen.
The non poisonous coating was found to be flexible and tests showed that it was just as tough as other products, including synthetic films, used in produce packaging. For anyone with an egg allergy, the coating can be removed by thorough washing in water and is tasteless.
The scientists hope this could be a breakthrough in the fight against food waste. “Reducing food shortages in ways that are not related to genetic modification, uneatable coatings or chemical additives is important for better sustainable living,” said materials scientist and study author Pulickel Ajayan.
What's great about this discovery is that it fights food waste in more than one way: even the coating was made from eggs that would otherwise have been discarded because they weren't fit for consumption. The researchers said roughly 200 million of US produced eggs go to waste annually. So if this were scaled up, it could be a win win situation all around.

phrases: come as no surprise; speak out against; to the extent; to this day
sentence patterns:
These passions, like great winds, have blown me in a wayward course, over a great ocean of anguish, reaching to the very edge of despair.
I have sought love, first, because it brings delight—delight so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy.
And I have tried to understand the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux.
Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens.
I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.
British philosopher, mathematician and writer Bertrand Russell(1872—1970) has had a major influence on Western philosophy.
His works, beautifully written with clarity of thought, are generally regarded as modern classics.
Russell regarded these passions as worthy beliefs and pursued them all his life.
Russell's first passion, the longing for love, played a powerful motivating role in his life.
It is the ultimate emotional experience that people could share with each other.
Russell's acknowledgement of the importance of seeking knowledge at every opportunity, whether to better understand our fellow man or the world in which we live, comes as no surprise.
Widely acknowledged as an expert in many fields, Russell actively followed his second passion.
Human suffering is, unfortunately, universal, inevitable and inescapable, of which Russell was all too aware.
Pity for the suffering of mankind became his third passion, which led him to dedicate much of his life to easing the pain of others through political and social activism.
He was also an active participant in improving the rights of women.
Russell is outstanding to the extent that his contributions and achievements still remain relevant to this day.
