A
(2025·武汉外国语学校期末)Like so many other ABCs(American-Born Chinese)and younger first-and second-generation Chinese immigrants, sisters Sarah and Kaitlin Leung reached a point in their adult lives when they started to long for the Chinese food they'd grown up on, but found it really difficult to learn how to prepare it.There was such a “representation gap”, as Sarah puts it, in terms of what kinds of cuisines were noticeably featured in those early days of TV celebrity chefs and the emerging food blogosphere (博客圈).
As it turns out, though, the Leungs were uniquely positioned to do something about it.Bill, the father, had spent years cooking beef at his family's Chinese American takeout restaurant.Judy, the mom,was born and raised in Shanghai and had deep knowledge about traditional Shanghainese cooking.Meanwhile, the two sisters had grown up in the New Jersey suburbs, eating their parents' food, but also growing in America's own food-obsessed culture.
So, in 2013, the Leungs started The Woks of Life. What distinguished their blog from others was that the intergenerational heritage (传承) of knowledge that the Leungs were so eager for was baked right into the concept—The four family members took turns posting recipes, each sharing their own areas of expert knowledge.
Kaitlin is proud that The Woks of Life follows a long line of pioneers—folks like Joyce Chen,Martin Yan and Ming Tsai, who first started to bring Chinese home cooking into the mainstream in the US.“We feel proud that we have made a meaningful mark over the past decade, indicating that there's a huge demand for these recipes,”she says.“It's about representation, yes, but there's also a huge demand.Asian Americans are looking to reconnect with the food of their heritage.”
Five years ago, you wouldn't have been able to find a ton of Chinese recipes in the food section of The New York Times, Kaitlin notes. Now you can.
【解题导语】 本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了年轻一代的美国华裔在做中国菜时遇到的困难以及“生活的炒锅”博客的诞生和影响。

(2025·漯河期末)Social media often encourages us to paint life in an idealized light, emphasizing optimism, thankfulness, and a positive outlook in all that we share.
I was the king of perfecting life.No fancy restaurant, overpriced coffee, or famous tourist destination was off-limits.I posed at the Eiffel Tower, threw a coin in the Trevi Fountain, and rode a camel around the pyramids, showing I was living my best life.Little did I know my ideal was about to change.
This summer, I chose to start a journey in a manner I had never done before. While I had always traveled with loved ones, the idea of exploring a new location alone had always attracted me.
My adventure alone to Portugal did not unfold as expected.I often found myself missing my husband and son.I spent two days ill in bed, eagerly waiting for my return flight.Despite this, the photos I posted on the Internet are only the fantastic scenes.I found myself discussing the weather and landscapes to avoid admitting that my trip was not entirely delightful.
Why did it seem so forbidden to share less-than-perfect experiences Why was I so used to turning every negative into a positive Because we are made to feel that we should show hope, gratitude, and positivity in everything we display. While the effort to get inspiring social media stories from the most ordinary experiences is admirable, it takes “positivity” too far.
Since returning from this journey, I've come to understand that it's acceptable to have bad days and that life is composed of imperfect moments. Now, as I view my online releases, I'm reminded that not every picture-perfect post reflects the complete truth.I've become better at dealing with the social pressure to idealize every aspect of my life and recognize the importance of sharing the whole story.

7.Why did it seem forbidden to share imperfect experiences
A.It was an indication of failure.
B.It challenged social conventions.
C.It made you disconnected with others.

(2025·揭阳期末)According to new research, babies are not only capable of creative thinking well before starting to speak, but this sort of thinking may be important for language learning.
In the study, the researchers set out to explore the origins of human creativity and productive thinking to try to find out how people arrive at completely new thoughts and ideas. They found that babies were able to very quickly learn new words that describe small quantities and combine these with familiar words to fully understand a phrase.
Lead researcher, Dr. Barbara Pomiechowska, said: “Human creativity is limitless: it has taken us to the moon and allowed us to cure deadly diseases—but despite its importance, we don't yet know when and how this impressive ability to combine ideas and invent new things appears. This research shows that we must go right back to the beginning of language learning to solve this puzzle.”
In the study, the researchers worked with 60 babies, all around the age of 12 months. They started by teaching the babies two novel words describing quantity: “mize”, to mean “one”, and “padu”, to mean “two”.
Then the babies were asked to combine these new number words with different object names, for example to identify “padu ducks” from some pictures. By teaching novel words to represent quantities, the researchers were able to test the babies' ability to combine concepts in real time, rather than simply recall combinations of words that they already knew from previous experience.
By using eye-tracking technology to monitor where the babies look, the researchers were able to show that the babies could successfully combine the two concepts to understand what they were being asked about.
According to Dr. Barbara, this ability to combine different concepts is likely to help babies not only to understand the language input, but also to learn about different aspects of the physical and social world.

C.The limitations of creative thinking.
D.The importance of language acquisition.
解析:细节理解题。根据第三段中的“but despite its importance...invent new things appears”可知,研究人员想要解决创造性思维的起源问题。

10.What were the babies asked to do in the study
A.Create novel words.
B.Count numbers in order.
C.Point out the number they knew.
D.Match objects with what they heard.
解析:细节理解题。根据第五段中的“Then the babies were asked...from some pictures.”可知,婴儿被要求将听到的内容与物体匹配。

11.What did the researchers use in the study
A.Previous data.
B.Advanced technology.
C.Professional concepts.
D.Regular examinations.
解析:细节理解题。根据第六段中的“By using eye-tracking technology to monitor where the babies look”可知,研究人员在研究中使用了先进的眼动追踪技术来监测婴儿的视线。

12.For Dr. Barbara, how is the effect of babies' ability to combine different concepts
A.Very bad. B.Quite impractical.
C.Greatly beneficial. D.Pretty impressive.

(2025 ·武汉期中)Culture shock is the feeling of losing direction experienced by someone suddenly subjected to an unfamiliar culture and way of life. 1.___________________________________________ This guide will inform you of the different stages of culture shock, helping you be better mentally prepared.

E.The experience seems like the greatest decision ever made.

The Frustration Stage
Frustration may be the most difficult stage of culture shock and is probably familiar to anyone who has lived abroad or who travels frequently. People are comfortable with the cultures, people, food and languages of new environments.

The Acceptance Stage
Generally—though sometimes weeks, months or years after wrestling with the emotional stages outlined above—the final stage of culture shock is acceptance. Acceptance doesn't mean that new cultures or languages are fully grasped. 5._______________________________ ____________________________During the acceptance stage, travelers have the familiarity and are able to draw together the resources they need to feel at ease.
D.People realize a complete understanding isn't necessary.
5.D 解析:上文提到,一般来说,文化冲击的最后阶段是接受,接受并不意味着完全掌握新的文化或语言。D项符合语境,且D项中的“complete understanding”与上文中的“fully grasped”相呼应。

B.It can be a difficult and overwhelming time.

One possible version:
Nowadays a lot of schools keep their students in school all day long. Students have different opinions about it.
Some of the students think they enjoy less freedom and have little chance to get in touch with society. They are not able to fully develop their interests and hobbies. Therefore, they have less interest in their studies.Others think school is the best place to get knowledge so they should put their heart into their lessons. Some students lack the ability to control themselves. Once out of school, they may do something that will influence their studies.
Personally, it is necessary to keep students at school. At the same time, schools should organize various activities so that students can enjoy their school life.

Job Title of the Future: Digital Forest Ranger
Adapted from MIT Technology Review
When Martin Roth began his career as a forest ranger in the 1980s, his job was to care for the forest in a way that would ensure continuity for decades, even centuries. Now, with climate change, it's more about planning for an uncertain future. “It's turned into disaster management,” says Roth, for whom the 3,000 acres of forest along the northeastern shore of Lake Constance in Germany double as testing ground for high-tech solutions, earning him the title “digital forest ranger” in the German forestry community.
After a catastrophic storm, the clock starts ticking. Damaged trees need to be removed before the arrival of bark beetles, which breed in dead trees and can go on to devastate entire forests. While it used to take Roth two and a half hours to cover an acre of forest on foot, drones now let him survey the entire 3,000 acres in days, so he can quickly locate damaged trees, identify and inform the owners of affected plots.
Roth also has digitally mapped all the logging trails and equipped tree harvesters with high-precision satellite antennas so the machines can precisely follow the same route for decades and easily find them in the chaotic aftermath of a storm.
His most recent project is combining body camera footage with AI. “When trees are felled, usually you have no idea how much timber you'll end up with—how many cubic meters, what quality, which tree species,” he explains. Now AI, “looking” through his body camera, automatically recognizes the tree species he has marked and estimates the amount of timber it will produce, sending the information to his phone in real time.
Up to half of European tree species are unsuited to rising temperatures and extended drought periods, so Roth has begun experimenting with new species, planting them in small batches and keeping track of them in his system.

My Uncle Makes a Great Discovery
Excerpt from A Journey to the Center of the Earth
一个坚定果敢,具有献身精神的科学探险家同他的侄儿和向导汉恩斯按照前人的指引,在地底经过整整三个月的艰辛跋涉,进行科学探险。
Having described my uncle, I will now give an account① of our interview.
He received me in his study②; a perfect museum, containing③ every natural curiosity④ that can well be imagined. Every one was familiar to⑤ me, having⑥ been catalogued⑦ by my own hand. My uncle, apparently⑧ forgot the fact that⑨ he had asked me to his presence, was absorbed in⑩ a book. He was particularly fond of early editions, tall copies, and unique works.
“Wonderful!” he cried, tapping his forehead. “Wonderful—wonderful!”
It was one of those yellow-leaved volumes now rarely found on stalls (货摊), and to me it appeared to possess but little value. My uncle, however, was in raptures .
He admired its binding, the clearness of its characters, the ease with which it opened in his hand, and repeated aloud, half a dozen times, that it was very, very old.
I asked him what it was about. “It is the Heims-Kringla of Snorre Tarleson,”he said, “the celebrated Icelandic (冰岛的) author of the twelfth century—it is a true and correct account of the Norwegian (挪威的) princes who ruled in Iceland.”
My uncle's delight was to have found the original work in the Icelandic tongue, which he declared to be one of the most magnificent and yet simple idioms (方言) in the world.
I was about to venture upon some joke on the subject, when a small scrap of parchment (羊皮纸) fell out of the leaves.
My uncle looked keenly at the document for some moments and then declared that it was Runic (北欧古字). The letters were similar to those in the book, but then what did they mean This was exactly what I wanted to know.
Now as I had a strong conviction that the Runic alphabet and dialect were simply an invention to confuse poor human nature, I was delighted to find that my uncle knew as much about the matter as I did—which was nothing.
The shaking motion of his fingers made me think so.
“And yet,” he muttered to himself, “it is old Icelandic. I am sure of it.”
And my uncle ought to have known, for he was a perfect polyglot (通晓多种语言的) dictionary in himself. He did not pretend to speak the two thousand languages and four thousand idioms made use of in different parts of the globe, but he did know all the more important ones.
It is a matter of great doubt to me now, if the clock had not struck two, and our old French cook called out to let us know that dinner was on the table, what violent measures my uncle's impatience might have led him to.
“Bother the dinner!” cried my uncle.
But as I was hungry, I rushed to the dining room, where I took up my usual spot. Out of politeness I waited three minutes, but no sign of my uncle, the Professor. I was surprised. He was not usually so blind to the pleasure of a good dinner. The dinner was a German luxury —parsley (欧芹) soup, a ham omelette (煎蛋) with trimmings (装饰), an oyster (牡蛎) of stewed beef, delicious fruit, and sparkling Moselle (白葡萄酒). For the sake of this old piece of parchment, my uncle did not come to share our meal. To satisfy my conscience , I ate for both.
The old cook and housekeeper was nearly out of her mind. After taking so much trouble, to find her master not appear at dinner was to her a sad disappointment —which, as she occasionally watched the havoc (浩劫) I was making on the table, became also alarm. If my uncle were to come to table after all?
Suddenly, just as I had consumed the last apple and drunk the last glass of wine, a terrible voice was heard at no great distance. It was my uncle roaring for me to come to him. I made very nearly one leap of it—so loud, so fierce was his tone.

【改编自译林选必三 U3】
It was Sunday, December 7, 1941. As usual, the wake-up call came at 5:45 a.m. The men aboard the warship USS Arizona stretched and rubbed their eyes. Seaman Russell Warriner was awakened by Quartermaster Louis Conter. Russell made his bed and helped clean the huge, shared room. The men went to the washroom, dressed in their uniforms and sat down to breakfast. It looked like it would be a normal day on board the ship.
But nobody ate their breakfast: at that moment, there was a huge crashing sound from above. The ship shook violently and the men looked at each other in horror. Above their heads, hundreds of Japanese planes circled like eagles. They were diving down to drop bombs on Pearl Harbor. The scream of their engines was deafening. As bombs thundered all around, clouds of black smoke rose into the sky and hung over the sea. Russell felt his blood freeze, but he quickly came to himself and rushed up to the deck. Moments later, a bomb hit the USS Arizona and Russell was thrown more than 100 meters across the ship. He suffered serious burns on his hands, arms and legs, and watched many of his friends die.
Louis, meanwhile, also standing on the deck, was lucky not to be thrown into the sea. With only minor injuries, he was able to help others who were severely burnt and in terrible pain. After receiving the order to abandon ship, Louis saved more men from the water, dragging them into the lifeboat. In the chaos and confusion after the attack, the US Navy sent a message to his family that Louis had been killed in the attack. Luckily, he was able to get in touch with them before the message arrived. Despite his remarkable actions, Louis did not think that he was a hero. “The heroes are the ones that gave their lives that day,” he said.

(2025·湖南部分重点中学期末)Life plays out much as it always has on the great plains of Kenya's Maasai Mara, but the latest generation of Maasai are gradually changing the face of modern safari (观兽旅行)—with greater permission for female guides and local communities as a whole.
[综合能力提升练]
Trainee Brenda Senewakorian, with her long hair sweeping into a bun, is among the new female guides recruited by a camp in an effort to increase their numbers. Traditionally in rural communities, women would be expected to cook and fetch water, among other domestic chores. Now, female guides behind safari vehicle steering wheels (方向盘) are an increasingly common sight in the Mara—largely due to communities becoming more accepting, greater education from measures such as the WTC and greater flexibility from employers around family commitments.
“Animals are just like us,” Brenda remarks, “They just want to take care of their young ones.” She's a single mother who relies on the support of her family to help raise her child. but she says she's determined to earn her own income.
Across the Mara, more camps are employing women. They're in the process of training their first female guide. Sophie, a veteran in the Mara at the wheel, recalls that previously girls couldn't go to school as parents thought it a waste. But now, the elders recognize what they do, and that everyone needs to contribute to the family income. The perception has changed: “if men can drive, we can drive; if men can guide, we can guide, too.”
It's not long before Sophie finds a mother buffalo and her calf hiding in the long grass. As tourists watch them, Sophie tells them of the legendary black rhino called Mary, who raised a new population of the creatures in the area and inspired the Kenyan government to establish a protection project.
While the essence of safari may remain the same—of watching wildlife out on the plains—change is coming to Kenya, as the next generation of Maasai guides pave their own path.

My senior year at Westfield High School was supposed to be the best year of my life.Instead, it turned into a lesson about friendship that I would never forget.
My best friend, Emily, and I had been inseparable since middle school. But as graduation approached, the stress of exams and college applications began to weigh heavily on us.Emily and I became distant.I was focused on getting into a top university, while Emily was more interested in enjoying our last year together. Our differing goals led to disagreements, and soon enough, we started to argue over the smallest things.
One day, things reached a boiling point. We had a huge fight over a group project.Days turned into weeks, and our friendship seemed beyond repair. We avoided each other at school and stopped sitting together at lunch. Our friends tried to help, but neither of us was willing to make the first move. The silence between us was deafening, and I missed her more than I wanted to admit.
It wasn't until our English teacher assigned us to work together on a final presentation that we were forced to confront each other. At first, we worked in tense silence. But as we spent more time together, the ice began to melt. One evening, as we were finishing up our project, Emily broke the silence.“I miss you,” she said softly.“I miss you, too,” I admitted, feeling a lump in my throat.“I'm sorry for being so hard on you.I just wanted everything to be perfect.” “I'm sorry too,” Emily replied.“I should have been more understanding. We're both stressed, but we shouldn't let it ruin our friendship.” We hugged, and at that moment, it felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders.
On the graduation day, we stood side by side, proud of what we had accomplished and grateful to each other. The experience made our bond stronger, and we knew that no matter where life took us, we would always be there for each other.

W:Well,my class will organize another tour to the mountains next Saturday. Are you interested in it
M:Sure.Count me in.

W:Hi.Not so good.I'm getting really annoyed with my little brother Jim at the moment.I'm trying to review for my exams and he keeps stopping me from working. Sometimes he listens to music late at night with his radio on loudly; sometimes he borrows something from me that I need to use for studying, like my dictionary or computer.I can't concentrate on my work for more than a few minutes. It's terrible.
M:You should ask your parents to deal with your brother. Your exams are more important.Your parents understand that.
W:That's a good idea, Matthew.I'll ask my dad for help tonight. My brother will listen to him.And I'll also think about going to the library at the weekend. It's nice to have a change sometimes when you're studying. How's your review going, Matthew
M:My problem is that I just can't remember anything from History.I read a page and then ten minutes later I've forgotten it.
W:That's not unusual. You should try writing down what you've just read. It's amazing how much more you will remember that way.Sometimes I even sing my notes. It's a bit embarrassing, but it will help to remember lots of information.
M:Yes.I'll try those ideas.
(Text 10)
M:Well, thank you for inviting me here today to talk to you about the riding and holiday centre I run.
Let me tell you about a normal day's activities. You'll probably be pleased to know we don't make you get up too early! We have our breakfast at 8:30. After that, we begin at 10 o'clock by getting the horses ready. You need to make sure you have the right equipment before the ride begins at about 11:30.
For the first few miles we go quite slowly, breaking for about an hour at midday, near a beach or a lake where you can take photos or sunbathe. At about 1:00 p.m., we have packed lunch together. We arrive back at the Centre at about 4:00 p.m.
Everyone has to wear a hard hat and these are available free of charge at the Centre. Sports shoes are no good for riding, I'm afraid. Strong shoes or boots with a small heel are best. Warm clothes such as jeans and sweaters, and a small shoulder bag for carrying a packed lunch are useful.
And now for the price. Well, a four-day holiday is £292 per person and that includes the riding and the equipment. The cost of food and hotel rooms is not included.

Mel Taylor-Bessent has had a passion for reading and writing stories since she was a child. After doing a creative writing degree at university, she set up Little Star Writing—after-school creative writing clubs, which she ran for many years. She went on to interview hundreds of authors for her website, called Authorfy, before becoming a children's author herself.
Her latest book, Race to Imagination Island, is the first step in an exciting adventure series exploring the unlimited power of our imaginations. Taylor-Bessent says writing for fun is vital for fueling children's creativity and dreams and everyone needs imagination.
She enjoyed creating her own stories from a very young age. “In school, I was the writing kid,” she says. “I just loved escaping into a story.” After reading a National Literacy Trust (NLT) report that said fewer and fewer children were writing for pure enjoyment, Taylor-Bessent decided to launch her social media channel, which offers top tips for children on how to enjoy creative writing, simply for fun.
Making a special writing atmosphere is a great way to start your writing tour. “Create a fun writing environment, play some music, grab a blanket, find a cosy corner,” she says, adding that when you start writing, don't worry about perfect spelling, punctuation and handwriting. Just let your ideas flow. “Our writing will improve if we play with our words,” she says. “Write about what you enjoy.” You could even invite a friend to write with you for “twice the ideas, twice the imagination and twice the fun”.
Taylor-Bessent encourages all children to try creative writing, saying, “There is no such thing as a wrong idea. Writing will take you anywhere you want to go and your imagination is limitless.”

“Human activity has wiped out two-thirds of the world's wildlife since 1970,” CNN (美国有线电视新闻网) reported.Later, The Guardian reported that “40 percent of the world's plant species are at risk of extinction”.Stanford biologist Paul Ehrlich and his colleagues argued that “the ongoing sixth mass extinction may be the most serious environmental threat to the persistence of civilization”.Around the same time, the Daily Mail warned that “human civilization stands a 90 percent chance of collapse within decades due to deforestation”.
These horrible calculations and projections come from authoritative-sounding reports issued by international agencies, conservation groups, and peer-reviewed scientific journals. But is the future of wild nature and human civilization really so poor
Data from uncontroversial mainstream sources strongly indicate that both humanity and the natural world are likely to be flourishing rather than collapsing at the end of this century.Humanity is becoming an urban species, and that's good for the environment, since urban dwellers generally use less electricity, produce less globe-warming carbon dioxide, and have smaller land footprints than people living in the countryside.By 2100, it is estimated that 85 percent of people will be city dwellers, which would leave only 1.2 billion still living in the countryside. That means more space for the wildlife and less pollution from the agriculture.
The global tree-covering area increased by about 865,000 square miles between 1982 and 2016.The researchers found that gains in forest area in the mild, subtropical and northern climatic zones are offsetting declines in the tropics. The Maryland researchers owe much of that increase to “natural afforestation on abandoned agricultural land”.“Furthermore, forests in mountainous regions are expanding as climate warming enables trees to grow at higher altitudes,” they added.
Humanity does face big environmental challenges in the coming century. But the scientific and economic evidence shows that most of the trends are positive or can be turned in positive direction by human wisdom.Rather than an age of extinction, the 21st century promises to be an era of environmental renewal.

Coral reefs (珊瑚礁) may be more capable of adapting to hotter and more acidic (酸性的) oceans than we thought, raising hopes of preserving these biodiverse ecosystems.
Rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere due to our emissions pose a twin threat to the world's coral reefs. Higher temperatures stress corals and this can lead to mass bleaching (漂白) and death. In addition, atmospheric CO2 absorbed by the ocean makes the water more acidic and weakens coral skeletons. This, along with pollution and overfishing, has already created a crisis for the planet's reefs.
To find out more about the extent and speed at which coral species could adapt, Jury and his colleagues at the University of Hawaii collected dozens of specimens of eight different coral species from reefs around O'ahu, Hawaii. They were then grown in an outdoor lab under four different conditions: under today's climate, one with temperatures raised by 2 ℃ but water chemistry unchanged, another with temperatures held but water chemistry made more acidic, and the last with both temperature and water chemistry changed to produce the warmer, more acidic conditions.
The test lasted as long as six months, but “the corals did surprisingly well”, says Jury. All saw lower growth rates—a measure of coral health—under the more stressful conditions. Yet individuals of all species survived the combined stressors, with no clear trade-off between tolerance to heat and acidity.
In fact, there is building evidence of a significant potential to adapt to changing oceans. For instance, in a second study published this month, Melissa Naugle at Southern Cross University in Australia and her colleagues analysed heat tolerance of different coral species on the Great Barrier Reef. They found unexpectedly large variation in heat tolerance, even among corals in the same part of the reef, which could be especially valuable for efforts to restore reefs by breeding more tolerant corals.
“I'm cautiously optimistic,” says Lisa McManus at the University of Hawaii, who wasn't involved with any of the research. But she cautions that any adaptive potential still depends on how much coral is left after extreme events. “In a lot of areas around the world, there's little coral cover left.”

A.By collecting from different oceans globally.
B.By growing under only one environmental condition.
C.By testing without considering coral species differences.
D.By cultivating in different conditions with local coral species.

Imagine that you are feeling down and inadequate.Someone who loves you wants to help by saying something really comforting. How about “You're perfect just the way you are”? That sounds nice! 36._________________________________________________________________The truth is that you are not perfect, and neither is anyone else.
F.This, however, may be the most misleading thing that people tell us.
36.F 解析:上文提出了一句听起来很不错的安慰话,F项与上文构成转折关系,指出这句话可能是最误导人的,引出下文对“没有人是完美的”这一事实的讨论,符合语境。
We humans have a natural tendency to overstate our positive qualities, and compare ourselves favorably with others.37. ________________________________________And it gives rise to all sorts of misrepresentations in how we see ourselves and the world around us.For example, back in the 1980s, researchers showed that up to 80 percent of motorists considered themselves to have above-average driving skills.
B.This is what we call self-enhancement.
37.B 解析:上文描述了人类的一种自然倾向,B项对上文进行总结,指出这种倾向就是“自我提升”,且下文“And it gives rise to...the world around us.”

Although self-enhancement feels good in the short term, it is not a long-term solution to life's problems. For instance, researchers showed that when college students held an overestimated view of their own academic ability, it enhanced their mood and positive emotion.39. ____________________________________________________________________________ In fact, the students tended to fail at their academic expectations, and that in part led to lower self-respect over the long term.
G.But the overestimation did not translate into better academic performance.
39.G 解析:上文举例说明自我提升在短期内让人感觉良好,G项与上文构成转折关系,指出自我提升并不能带来更好的学术表现,引出下文对学生未能达到学术期望的讨论,符合语境。
So we face a dilemma in life: we want to feel better and make others feel better, but people's tendency to do so through self-enhancement is a short-lived solution with possibly enduring ultimate costs.A better approach might be to reconsider our imperfections, and those of others, not as shortcomings but as interesting challenges to overcome.40. ________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________
E.After all, if you're already perfect, what is there left to fight for
40.E 解析:上文提出了一种更好的方法,即正视不完美并将其视为挑战,E项强调了正视不完美的重要性,与上文观点相呼应。

B.This is what we call self-enhancement.
C.One reason for this tendency is its protective function.
D.Being told you're perfect can make you feel good temporarily.
E.After all, if you're already perfect, what is there left to fight for
F.This, however, may be the most misleading thing that people tell us.
G.But the overestimation did not translate into better academic performance.
【解题导语】 本文是一篇议论文。文章讨论了自我提升现象,以及这种现象虽然短期内让人感觉良好,但并非解决问题的长久之计,更好的方法是正视不完美,将其视为有待克服的有趣挑战。

Dear Community Management,
I am a resident affected by the ongoing construction near our residential area. The noise from the site, which operates from early morning till late night, is excessive and has become a significant disturbance. It disrupts our daily lives, including rest, study, and work.
The constant loud machinery and crashing sounds have made it difficult for neighbors to enjoy peace indoors. This noise pollution seems to be in violation of local regulations on construction hours and environmental impact.
We kindly request prompt intervention to resolve this issue and restore tranquility in our community. We look forward to your immediate response.
Sincerely,
Li Hua

Mr.Riley's room was just past the bathrooms on the left side of the hall across from the lockers, which, for some reason, we were not allowed to use. He stood in the doorway, hands in pockets, and welcomed us into the classroom every day. He was a nice enough guy, but he was so pretentious (自命不凡的) that most students disliked him. And I was in general agreement with my classmates that none of us was supposed to like anything that went on in his class.
Then we read All Summer in a Day by Ray Bradbury in his class. I didn't think I'd like the short story at first, about a girl who lived on Venus (金星). Oh gosh, a sci-fi story. Not my favorite,I thought. I was prepared to roll my eyes along with the kids around me, to signal my discontent with Mr. Riley. However, after the opening paragraphs I felt an electrifying sense, because something about this story felt so close to me. Something about a world where the rain never stopped and where a girl felt lonely and misunderstood by those around her cut me to the heart. And suddenly my desk, the classroom, Mr. Riley's voice all fell away as I traveled through space and stood invisible on Venus, free to feel all that happens to this girl, Margot.
The story doesn't end happily. The children who treat Margot terribly remain terrible. None of them becomes her friend. And Margot is left in a state of sorrow and exposed to various forms of hardship.
Maybe I should have hated the story, with its unsatisfying conclusion. But instead I loved it. I loved the honesty. I loved how the ending did not lie to me or try to make me feel better, but instead revealed a kind of truth that most people don't often reveal to children: sometimes there are no happy endings. And while we are capable of surviving cruelty, we do not do so completely unaffected.

One possible version:
Mr. Riley made us write a continuation of the story by creating a new ending. I felt a deep sense of responsibility to Margot, so I decided to give her a good ending. In my version, Margot found acceptance and formed friendships she longed for, and the children who were once unfriendly to her came to understand her struggles. The sun finally shone not just in the sky of Venus, but also in Margot's life, bringing warmth and hope to her heart.
Unexpectedly, Mr. Riley read my ending to the class the next day. I could feel my heart pounding, unsure of how my classmates would react. As Mr. Riley read, I watched their faces closely. To my surprise, there was no ridicule and no eye rolls. Instead, there was quiet attention, a sense of collective eagerness for the happy twist I had crafted. When Mr. Riley finished, he looked up and said,“This, my friends, is the power of storytelling. It allows us to reshape the world, even if just in our minds.” For the first time, I saw respect in his eyes, and maybe, just maybe, a glimmer of pride.(共31张PPT)

[1]When I was young, my father was a secondary school teacher in Edensor, England. As the breadwinner of my family, he was deeply engaged in his school responsibilities during my childhood. Consequently, I often felt distant from him because he had few moments to talk or interact with me. My mother, a full-time housewife, managed the household and took care of my younger brother and me. The back garden of our house was a special place for me; it was not only a secure spot for kids but also my dad's favorite hobby area. Whenever he was home, he would spend most of his spare time looking after his treasured roses, which my mother also adored.
[2]My father would care for his roses with great devotion and affection. Often, I would watch beside him, curious or eager for his attention, but he was usually preoccupied (全神贯注). He regularly watered the roses, cleaned the leaves, loosened and turned over the soil, and fed them with essential nutrients. His expectation was the joy and sweetness brought by their blossoming.
[3]One day, I saw him cut off some branches and stems. Then, with a sharp knife, he carefully made marks on the main branches. He cut open the marked spots to insert sprouts (嫩枝) into those new cuts and wrapped them with bandages. After all his efforts, he reminded us never to touch them. From then on, whenever my father returned home from work, he would go straight to tend to those plants.
[4]Within a month, we all witnessed the entire process: tender stems grow, form buds, and finally bear blossoms in various colors. The garden soon became a place of immense beauty, filled with rose blossoms and surrounded by their sweet fragrance. My parents truly enjoyed themselves there, and so did my brother Tommy and I. Those roses brought us immense happiness, and no one, especially me, wanted to let go of such beauty.

“I am not out of place; I am where I belong,” says Joel Walker, after performing acupuncture (针灸) on a patient in Zhengzhou, China. Some locals are astonished by receiving traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) from a foreigner, but Walker is confident in his path. He is among a growing number of foreigners engaging in TCM, mixing their Western backgrounds with ancient Chinese healing arts.
[综合能力提升练]
Walker, from Germany, came to China in 2015, drawn by martial arts. While learning Shaolin kung fu in Henan, he developed a curiosity about Chinese culture and medicine. After a year of intensive Chinese study, he signed up in Henan University of Chinese Medicine. Specializing in acupuncture, he has treated over a thousand patients. “He is skilled in heartbeat diagnosis (诊断) and acupuncture,” said his teacher, Professor Yu Dongdong.
Under his Chinese name “Wuming”, Walker has become an online hit on a video-sharing platform, gathering over one million followers. Balancing his roles as practitioner and Internet celebrity, he presents local culture in fluent Henan dialect (方言), often alongside his local girlfriend. “Your grasp of the Henan dialect is even more authentic than mine,” comments one follower. Apparently, his cultural involvement has endeared him to many. He also treated his grandmother's health problems with acupuncture, leading to her swift recovery.
With his growing fan base, Walker feels a responsibility. “Posting videos was just a pastime, but now I want to participate in more meaningful projects,” he says. He plans to create bilingual videos promoting TCM and sharing stories of ancient Chinese medical experts. “I'm devoted to spreading awareness of TCM and its far-reaching cultural significance,” he adds. Whether in China or Germany, he plans to devote himself to TCM. “I will do anything to help people through TCM. That's my calling.”

Recent research suggests that growing camellia (山茶) plants for cooking oil could enhance production while minimizing environmental harm. Replacing some traditional vegetable oil crops with camellia could lead to increased oil yield and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions (释放), water consumption, and pesticide use. Camellia, or tea seed oil, is a high-yielding bush that grows well in challenging conditions where other oil crops struggle. Despite its potential health benefits, camellia oil remains largely unknown outside China.
Currently, about a third of the world's farmland is used to grow vegetable oils. This area is expanding, contributing to deforestation, global warming and wildlife loss. According to Thomas Wanger from Westlake University in Hangzhou, China, the environmental impact of six main oil crops—soya, palm, rapeseed, sunflower, peanut, and olive—results in an estimated 1.2 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, primarily due to fertilizer use and deforestation.
Wanger's team explored the environmental benefits of replacing some of these crops with Camellia oleifera. This plant can yield up to 2.8 tonnes of oil per hectare, second only to palm oil, and can grow in poor soil and on steep hillsides. Camellia oil is rich in oleic acid (油酸), which may lower heart disease risk and has a higher smoke point than many oils, reducing harmful chemical formation during cooking.
If camellia were grown on 11% of the land currently used for other oil crops, it could produce the same oil volume while decreasing greenhouse gas emissions by 14%, water use by 5%, land use by 7%, and pesticide use by 9%. However, these figures would depend on how camellia is grown, says Wanger, “The benefits depend strongly on where it is planted and to replace what.”
“Government action would probably be needed to encourage a camellia oil market,” says Wanger. “The price currently is very high, and so I think the consumer might be a bit hesitant.” “The commercial reality is that new oil crops won't achieve a large market share unless production can compete in the market,” says Christopher at Alternative Fuels Consultancy.

C
(2025·重庆育才中学月考)Do you have a suit or dress in the closet that you haven't worn for years but are reluctant to get rid of Maybe you say instinctively, “I can't throw that away because I paid good money for it.” If you recognize this in yourself, then you are suffering from commitment to the sunk cost fallacy (沉没成本谬误). It occurs when we feel that we have invested too much to quit. This psychological trap causes us to stick with a plan even if it no longer serves us and the costs clearly outweigh the benefits.
Arkes and Blumer conducted a survey revealing that people are influenced by the sunk cost fallacy in their decisions. Participants were asked to imagine a situation where they accidentally booked two ski tickets for the same date, spending $100 on a ski trip to Michigan and $50 on Wisconsin. They were also told the latter would be more enjoyable. It turned out that 54% chose to go up to Michigan despite the reasonable choice being Wisconsin, because they had made greater initial investment.
The sunk cost fallacy takes place when we let emotions cloud our decisions. Once we've invested in a choice, we feel guilt or regret if we don't follow through, without realizing that past investment won't be recovered. Instead, we base decisions on past costs, ignoring present and future costs and benefits. This may be due to loss aversion (厌恶), where people place more weight on losses than on gains. As a result, our decisions often aim to avoid losses instead of seeking the benefits gained if we let go of the past commitment.
No one can deny the fact that we benefit a lot from perseverance. So our society loves to emphasize perseverance with some phrases, like “Never give up! Don't waste.” But only you know the right path for you. Sometimes walking away is the hardest choice of all. You might realize a path you're on is no longer the right one or never was. That's a painful recognition.
【解题导语】 本文是一篇议论文。文章讨论了“沉没成本谬误”这种心理陷阱,认为应该客观地看待“毅力”和“放弃”。
9.What phenomenon does the author describe at the beginning of the passage
A.People benefit from sticking with a plan.
B.People's consumption view has changed.
C.People refuse to give up the past commitment.
D.People's clothes are becoming more expensive.
解析:细节理解题。根据第一段中舍不得丢掉很多年都不穿的旧衣服的例子及“It occurs when...outweigh the benefits.”可知,作者在文章开头描述的现象是人们不愿意放弃自己已经投入太多的事情。

10.Why did 54% of the participants choose the Michigan trip
A.To save more of the loss.
B.To appear more reasonable.
C.To make greater investment.
D.To enjoy more of themselves.
解析:细节理解题。根据第二段最后一句和第三段中的“This may be due to...the past commitment.”可知,54%的参与者选择了密歇根之旅是为了避免更多的损失。

11.When does the “sunk cost fallacy” occur
A.When we don't follow through our choices.
B.When we attach more importance to potential gains.
C.When we feel it worthwhile to invest in past decisions.
D.When we emotionally stick with investment already made.
解析:细节理解题。根据第三段中的“The sunk cost fallacy takes place...future costs and benefits.”可知,当我们在情绪化地坚持已经做出的投资时,“沉没成本谬误”就会发生。

12.What is the author's attitude toward “perseverance”?
A.Favorable. B.Objective.
C.Critical. D.Unclear.

Dear Ben,
There is an old American saying, “Loose lips sink ships.” This means that if you speak too much about something, especially to people who you don't know so well, it'll cause all kinds of trouble.
The situation here is so much worse because the “loose lips” were your best friend's. Treated this way, you're sure to feel hurt—we should always be able to trust those closest to us, and it hurts even more when we find we can't.
But I have to say that it's partly your fault, isn't it You admit that you were “letting off steam”. It is understandable in that situation, but we should always think before we speak.
Here's what you need to do. First, apologise to your teammate. If you ever want to win any more basketball games (and I'm sure you do!), you need to work together, and that means communicating with each other clearly and resolving conflicts. So have a chat with your teammate. Tell him directly and honestly that you were talking without thinking.
Then, talk to your friend. Friendship should be one of the greatest things in the world, but sometimes it can be difficult. Again, your strategy is clear communication. Tell your friend you're angry with him for repeating what you said and making the situation worse, but that you want to move on. Approached in this way, your friendship will soon be repaired.
Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, think about your own behaviour. Don't say too much when you're angry!Filled with anger, you tend to say whatever comes to your mind. This gives people the wrong signal. Take a deep breath, calm down, and always remember: think first, speak later. If you feel one of your teammates isn't pulling their weight, then raise your concerns in a professional way with your team coach.
If you think about other people's feelings as well as your own, you'll soon find everything works out .
Good luck!
Agony Aunt

(2025·郑州第一次质检)A few years ago, we bought a Taj Mahal (泰姬陵) model for my dad's birthday, hoping to combine his love for architecture with family time.
Each evening, my dad and I gathered around the large dining table to build the model. We faced thousands of tiny white pieces, each packaged with precision in numbered plastic bags, accompanied by a thick instruction book.
The evenings passed quickly, and the building rose before our eyes. We could see our efforts producing good results, and as we turned to the boring task of ordering the colored bricks on the building's floor, our conversation too took a turn.
We were amazed by how complex the model and its instruction book were. We realized the book itself was a work of art, beautiful, but also surprisingly detailed and clear. It provided us with the comfort of certainty. We knew if we followed all the instructions, we would end up with a model that looked exactly like the picture on the box. If we made a mistake, all we had to do was to repeat our steps and start again.
Life, however, does not fit together so neatly and rarely provides us with such clear instructions. We talked over our respective lives, decisions made, and actions and choices never taken. Dad reflected on a life well lived, and I, in my mid-thirties, on the uncertain path that lay ahead.
Here, we were the expert architects doing the assembling (组装), but out in the world, we were the ones being assembled. We think we're in control, but our choices are shaped by forces beyond our control. In the face of uncertainty, we have to proceed, trusting both in the process and the end result.
Sometimes, on the days I return home, I go to the spare room to look at the completed model, which brings forth a sense of happiness and comfort. It reminds me that life is built slowly, with mistakes, an element of uncertainty and no instruction book. It shows that consideration, warmth and faith will result in a life well lived. Life itself is not about what we materially create or leave behind, but rather how we live it.

Dragons, mythical creatures of power and magic, have captured the imagination of people across cultures for centuries. However, the perception and symbolism of dragons differ significantly between Eastern and Western cultures.
In the East, particularly in China, the dragon is a respectable symbol of power, strength, and good luck. It is often associated with the element of water and is believed to have the ability to control rain and floods. The Chinese dragon most resembles a snake, and has four claws and no wings. It also represents the imperial power, so ancient Chinese emperors decorated their clothes with dragon patterns, which were known as dragon robes. The dragon is often used in traditional art and festivals in China, such as the Dragon Boat Festival. Many Chinese view the dragon as a national representative, thus proudly referring to themselves as “Generations of the Dragon”.
In contrast, Western dragon culture portrays dragons as fearsome, fire-breathing creatures that spread violence and terror throughout the land. They are typically shown with large, bat-like wings, sharp claws, and a long tail. Western dragons are known for guarding vast piles of gold and jewels and are often defeated by heroes in various stories. They symbolize chaos and destruction, and their defeat is seen as a triumph of good over evil.
Despite these differences, dragons in both cultures are seen as powerful and wise beings. They are a source of fascination and have inspired countless stories, art, and even modern-day movies and games. The dragon's ability to fly and its connection to the element make it a symbol of freedom and the ability to overcome obstacles. Today, dragons continue to evolve, exceeding traditional boundaries and finding new significance in global culture. They are no longer associated with evil or good, but rather as complex characters with their own unique personalities and motivations.
