In school and at home, most of us have been scolded (责骂) or even got punished for daydreaming. Most people say that by daydreaming we waste our time and energy on something that is nothing less than unproductive things. But many medical studies have shown something different. They've stressed the fact that daydreaming works wonders for our imagination, creativity and situation-handling technique. In fact, many problems can be easily solved if we daydream.
The biggest benefit of daydreaming is that your mood gets the right improvement. By separating yourself from the world around you, you tend to enjoy the solitude (独处) in your mind and get peace from daydreaming as you think about something that calms your senses. When you start imagining things or while daydreaming, you tend to forget all the stress and tension. Instead, you get happiness from it and this happiness changes into a source of energy that helps you work in a good mood.
Many psychologists have said that people who daydream tend to have a sharper memory. It's true that when you're daydreaming, you tend to get carried away to imagine various situations, either real or unreal. You tend to act differently in different situations, trying to satisfy your mind by doing what you want in your dreams. When your mind gets satisfied, you're in a better position to concentrate more on your work. Since daydreaming activates (激活) the nerves of your brain, you tend to have higher attentiveness (注意力) and your ability to remember things will develop.
When you daydream, you imagine yourself as your heart says and therefore, you get to know yourself better. You also start realising the mistakes you've made in life and you start trying your best to avoid repeating them. Such imagination helps you to connect yourself with your soul.

With limited space for parks and gardens, architects (建筑师) and city planners often find it challenging to include greenery in the neighborhoods of cities. One creative solution is to grow plants on unused areas like walls and rooftops. It's a popular idea, and now rooftop gardens and green walls have been sprouting up (涌现出) in cities around the world.
There are many benefits of having green space in the urban landscape. Adding gardens to rooftops or walls can create a pleasant environment—what was once a gray cement wall can become a colorful, blooming garden. The CaxiaForum art gallery in Madrid, Spain, is a famous example—one of its walls is covered with different kinds of plants. In other cities, green walls are being used to cover up construction sites and empty buildings and to decorate the halls of office buildings.
Using plants to cover walls and rooftops can also keep cities cooler in the summer. Buildings and roads absorb (吸收) the sun's heat and hold it, causing a building or neighborhood to stay warmer longer. Plants, on the other hand, provide a large amount of shade. There is evidence that growing a rooftop or wall garden can lower a building's energy costs.
In New York City, public schools plant rooftop gardens that can reduce heating and cooling costs. In addition to saving the school money, teachers and parents love the gardens because of their educational value—it's a fun and healthy way for kids to explore the world around them. “For the children, it's exciting when you grow something edible (可以食用的),” the headmaster of a New York public school said.
Rooftop gardens and green walls may require a bit more effort to grow and maintain. However, hard work always brings rewards, and with green space, the rewards are plentiful.

P53)Later, she studied Chinese medicine for two and a half years with experts in the field from whom she gained a deep knowledge about traditional practices.

(4)In the dark street, there wasn't a single person to whom she could turn for help.
1.根据定语从句中动词、形容词的习惯搭配来确定;
2.根据与先行词搭配的具体含义来确定;
当定语从句中的谓语动词是短语而又不可分割时,那么该动词短语中的介词不能前置,如listen to、 look at、 look for、 look into、 call on、 depend on、 make use of、 pay attention to、 take care of等。
P53)They did not have enough staff, and the laboratory in which they worked had poor air quality.
(2)We are looking for the person to whom the book belongs.

(3)He may be late, in which case we'll have to put off the meeting.
1.“介词+关系代词”引导定语从句,当先行词指物时,介词后的关系代词用which;当先行词指人时,介词后的关系代词用whom;
2.介词后的关系代词不可用that或who;
3.介词后的关系代词不可省略;
三、“介词+which”与关系副词when、 where、 why之间的转换
(1)(教材P53)The reason why(=for which) this was difficult was that the team had limited resources.
(2)So long as you stick to it, the moment will definitely come when(=at which) you can have your dream come true.

(3)Creating an atmosphere where(=in which) employees feel part of a team is a big challenge.
(1)Recently, I bought an ancient vase, the price of which was very reasonable.
(2)He has ten cousins, the youngest of whom is very clever.

Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812.He was born to John Dickens and Elizabeth Dickens from Landport, Hampshire, England. His father was thrown in prison when he was a child. For this reason, Charles Dickens had to leave school. He started to work in factories from an early age. At age 20, he wanted to become an entertainer. He was full of energy and did mimicry (模仿) at the time. He got an acting audition (试镜) but missed it due to cold. Before Charles Dickens got another chance at fame in acting, he had already set out to become a writer.
Charles Dickens rose to fame with The Pickwick Papers in 1836.He was using the pen name Boz at the time. His success as a novelist continued with the release of Oliver Twist in 1838.His later works Dombey and Son and David Copperfield had a more serious theme than his earlier works. David Copperfield is considered to be one of his greatest works ever. Dickens wrote 15 novels in his lifetime. He also wrote numerous short stories, essays, travelogues and plays.
Dickens had a deep-rooted concern for the poor people because of his own experiences of hardship. He was a sharp critic (批评者) of the social problems of his time. He exposed the dark side of Victorian society such as the gap between the rich and the poor. He believed in the power of good and the possibility of social reform. His characters often tried to get a better life and moral values, giving readers a sense of hope.
Charles Dickens married Catherine Dickens in 1936.On June 9, 1870, Charles Dickens died of a stroke at the age of 58.

C
After years of observing human nature, I have decided that two qualities make a difference between men of great achievement and men of average performance—curiosity and discontent. I have never known an outstanding man who lacked either. And I have never known an average man who had both.
Together, these deep human urges (驱策力) count for much more than ambition. Galileo was not merely ambitious when he dropped objects of varying weights from the Leaning Tower at Pisa and timed their fall to the ground. Like Galileo, all the great names in history were curious and asked in discontent, “Why Why Why?”
Fortunately, curiosity and discontent don't have to be learned. We are born with them and need only to recapture them. “The great man,” said Mencius, “is he who does not lose his child's heart.” Yet most of us do lose it. We stop asking questions. We stop challenging custom. We just follow the crowd. And the crowd desires only the calm and restful average.
Most of us meet new people, and new ideas, with hesitation. But once having met and liked them, we think how terrible it would have been, had we missed the chance. We will probably have to force ourselves to waken our curiosity and discontent and keep them awake.
How should you start Modestly, so as not to become discouraged. I think of one friend who couldn't arrange flowers to satisfy herself. She was curious about how the experts did it.
The way to begin is to answer your own excuses. You haven't any special ability Most people don't; there are only a few geniuses. You haven't any time That's good, because it's always the people with no time who get things done. Harriet Stowe, mother of six, wrote parts of Uncle Tom's Cabin while cooking. You're too old Remember that Thomas Costain was 57 when he published his first novel, and that Grandma Moses showed her first pictures when she was 78.
However you start, remember there is no better time to start than right now, for you'll never be more alive than you are at this moment.

A.To present an argument.
B.To make a comparison.
C.To reach a conclusion.
D.To propose a definition.
根据第一段关键句“After years of observing human nature, I have decided...of average performance—curiosity and discontent.”

10.What does the example of Galileo tell us?
A.Scientists tend to be curious and ambitious.
B.Trial and error leads to the finding of truth.
C.Creativity results from challenging authority.
D.Greatness comes from a lasting desire to explore.

11.What can you do to recapture curiosity and discontent?
A.Observe the unknown around you.
B.Develop a questioning mind.
C.Lead a life of adventure.
D.Follow the fashion.

Albert Einstein, who is perhaps the greatest scientist in modern physics, is often considered one of the smartest men who ever lived. He made numerous contributions to the world, the most well-known being the general theory of relativity and the famous formula (方程式) E=mc2. Einstein was not only a genius; he was a courageous and kind figure loved by many people.
This gentle genius was born in Germany on 14 March 1879.When he was 16, he tried to enter university in Switzerland, but failed due to his low scores in the general part of the entrance exam, despite obtaining exceptional scores in maths and physics.After studying for another year, he managed to pass the exam, entering university in 1896 and graduating in 1900.
After two years of looking for work as a teacher, Einstein took a job as a clerk in the Swiss patent office. While working there, out of a strong passion for knowledge, he continued to study, earning a doctorate in physics in 1905.That same year, which was later recorded as a miracle year in science, he published four extraordinary physics papers. Following this, he gradually became famous throughout the world as the new Isaac Newton.After four years, he was able to quit his job at the patent office and enter research full-time at a university.In 1922, he was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics for his explanation of the photoelectric effect.
Circumstances changed in 1933, when Hitler came to power in Germany. Einstein, who was Jewish, found the doors of academic institutions closed to him. As a result, he had to flee Germany. (2025·浙江S9联盟高一期中)Shi Wenlan said the only thing that interests her is dealing with smelly centuries-old books. “I don't want to drink. I don't want to eat or move. I like sitting alone under the warm lights,mending holes and cutting pages. I'm a boring person, but I'm doing an interesting thing,” she said. In the past 26 years,the 51-year-old restorer (修复师) of ancient books at the Hunan Library in Changsha,capital of Hunan Province, has brought about 100,000 pages of ancient books back to life. Her work helps to ensure that ancient knowledge can be read and appreciated by people today. Shi has great faith in her little-known job. “Ancient books are precious documents and important achievements of Chinese civilization.To restore them is to rescue cultural relics that are dying out,” she said.
Books age and decay (腐烂) over time. Though technology, such as accurately controlled temperatures and humidity levels, can be used to slow the process, a number of old books are on the edge of withering away forever, experts said. At the Hunan Library alone, a third of its 680,000 ancient books are in urgent need of restoration, which means each of its eight restorers needs to complete 3,000 pages a year, said Liu Xueping, director of the library's special collection department. More young restorers must be trained to promote the production of ancient books, so human civilization can be preserved despite the damage of time,experts said.
In recent years, the government has attached great importance to the restoration of ancient books and has put forward many policies to encourage more people to take up the work.The number of restorers has now reached about 1,000.They have better educational backgrounds and receive more systematic training,as well as better salaries and higher social status, Shi said.

Tu Youyou has become the first female scientist of the People's Republic of China to receive a Nobel Prize, awarded for her contribution to the fight against malaria, one of the deadliest diseases in human history. Thanks to her discovery of qinghaosu, malaria patients all over the world now have had a greatly increased chance of survival.
Born in 1930, in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, Tu studied medicine at university in Beijing between 1951 and 1955. After graduation, she worked at the Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. She completed further training courses in traditional Chinese medicine, acquiring a broad knowledge of both traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine.
Tu's education was soon to prove very useful. In the 1960s, many people were dying of malaria, and in 1969 Tu became head of a team that intended to find a cure for the disease. She collected over 2,000 traditional Chinese medical recipes for malaria treatment and made hundreds of extracts from different herbs. When they failed to produce any promising results, Tu referred to the ancient books of traditional Chinese medicine again. Inspired by an over 1,600-year-old text about preparing qinghao extract with cold water, Tu redesigned the experiments and tried extracting the herb at a low temperature in order not to damage its effective part. On 4 October 1971, after 190 failures, she succeeded in making qinghao extract that could treat malaria in mice.
However, it was hard to produce enough qinghao extract for large trials because research resources were limited. Tu and her team managed to find solutions to the problem. When there was no research equipment, they had to extract herbs using household water containers. They worked day and night and their health began to suffer because of the poor conditions, but they never gave up.

Confucius grew up in a poor family.As he grew up, Confucius worked to help his mother earn money.When he wasn't working, he would read.His favorite thing to do was to learn.His mother saw this and did her best to help him learn.One day, rich families noticed how smart he was and offered him jobs counting their money and keeping track of their crops.
Confucius did this until he was 30 years old, but he always wanted to do more.
He didn't like the way rulers treated their people.He wanted to find a way to help people who were less fortunate than he was.Later, he founded the philosophy “Confucianism”.Confucianism states that by educating yourself, loving your family, and respecting tradition you could become a better person.Confucius believed a person could achieve these things by practicing self-discipline (自 律).For the rest of his life, Confucius traveled and taught the people of China about self-discipline and the importance of education.He even opened China's first school that taught both the poor and the wealthy as equals.Although he became very famous among China's lower classes, the rulers of China never accepted his teachings.Eventually, his philosophy of self-discipline helped China unite under one ruler and finally find peace.Today, Confucius is celebrated all over the world for his philosophy of education, equality, and peace over war, money, and injustice.

Kelli Boehle says her son Nik was an amazing and caring person. Nik was diagnosed with cancer in 2008 when he was 17. He passed away in 2012. But Nik's kindness and generosity have lived on long after his death.
After he was diagnosed and started treatment, Nik was granted (给予) a wish experience from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. “For just this period of time, we didn't think about cancer,” Kelli Boehle said. “All we thought about was enjoying our time together.”
In 2009, Nik met another young man Nate, who was also going through cancer treatment. He'd been diagnosed a month after turning 18, and Nik learned he was too old to qualify for a wish. The night before Nik passed away, he asked his mother to help ensure that young adults fighting cancer could have their wishes come true too.
“It was like a seed he planted that just wouldn't stop coming into my mind, ” she said. In 2012, Kelli Boehle started Nik's Wish. The nonprofit grants wishes to young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 who are battling cancer. Nate was the organization's first wish recipient. “It's meant to bring them joy and know that they're loved and that we're fighting for them, too, ” Kelli Boehle said.
Recently, 19-year-old Jordan Morrow received her wish to attend a concert as part of a trip to Los Angeles. For Morrow, who has spent the last year battling brain cancer, going to the concert has done more than lift her spirits. “I think it's something to get me through whatever comes my way, ”she said. “And I'm thankful for Nik's Wish for that.”
In these years since Nik passed away, the organization has granted more than 300 wishes across more than 30 states. In the beginning, Kelli Boehle says she wasn't sure she could be a wish maker and work closely with the young adults. But now, it's her favorite thing to do.

Kurzweil's positive view on the singularity stands in sharp opposition to the warnings from several famous people who have voiced concerns about the potential risks of superintelligent AI. These figures fear that AI could become uncontrollable and threaten humanity's survival. Kurzweil, however, sees AI not as an existential risk, but as a powerful tool for improving human abilities. He argues that AI won't operate as an independent force but will function within a network designed to work alongside humans, improving rather than replacing our abilities.
Kurzweil supports his viewpoint with existing technologies, like brain implants used to treat Parkinson's disease (帕金森病), suggesting that the integration process is already in progress. He envisions a future where, by the 2030s, individuals will connect their neocortex—the part of the brain responsible for advanced thinking—to the cloud, improving our memory, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
Looking ahead to 2045, Kurzweil believes that the singularity will further enable humanity to address complex global challenges and unlock new levels of intellectual and creative potential. Rather than viewing this transformation as a threat, Kurzweil considers it a valuable opportunity for human progress, as AI will empower individuals to meet their physical and intellectual needs. He argues that this will lead to a society characterized by remarkable growth and achievement.
