(2025·南阳一中高一月考)A lot of people feel that it's much harder to learn a foreign language as they grow older—and they're right. A new study found that if you want to achieve the proficiency (熟练) of a native speaker, you'd better start when you're 10 years old.
There is a lot of evidence that shows children find it much easier than adults to learn a foreign language, which has made researchers suggest that there is an “important period” for language learning. But until now, no one has really been sure what that age period is. Now, MIF researchers believe they have solved one of those things.
They found that the window starts to close when you're about 10 years old. Although children up to 17 or 18 learn a new language faster than adults, and their ability drops slower than that in adults, it becomes very difficult to reach the proficiency of a native speaker if you start later than age 10.
The findings are based on an analysis of a grammar test taken by nearly 670,000 people. Researchers took snapshots (快照) of thousands of people who were in different stages of learning English. They also used a game called “Which English” to judge which dialect (方言) of English the test-taker speaks. Within hours after being posted on the social media, the 10-minute test “Which English” spread quickly.
Researchers found that the grammar-learning ability remains strong until age 17 or 18, after which it starts to drop—which was rather unexpected. It's not clear why the drop starts to happen. It may either be a cultural reason or a biological one. You shouldn't let this disappoint you. Even if it's a bit harder, you should try it. It's not just the ability to talk to someone from another country. Studies have shown that learning a second or third language does wonders for your brain and mental health.

(2025·常州北郊中学月考)What kind of people can become scientists When a group of researchers posed that question to ninth-and tenth-graders, almost every student gave such responses as “People who work hard” or “Anyone who seems interested in the field of science”.
Many of these same students struggled to imagine themselves as scientists, citing concerns such as “I'm not good at science” and “Even if I work hard, I will not do well.” It's easy for them to see a scientist's work as arising from an inborn talent.
But for high school students, learning more about some struggles of scientists can help students feel more motivated to learn science. Researchers at Teachers College, Columbia University and the
University of Washington designed an intervention to change students' beliefs that scientific achievement reflects ability rather than effort by exposing students to stories of how accomplished scientists struggled and overcame challenges in their scientific efforts.
During the study, the students read one of three types of stories about Albert Einstein, Marie Curie and Michael Faraday. Intellectual struggle stories: stories about how scientists “struggled intellectually”, such as making mistakes while tackling a scientific problem and learning from them. Life struggle stories: stories about how scientists struggled in their personal lives, such as not giving up in the face of poverty or lack of family support. Achievement stories: stories about how scientists made great discoveries, without any discussion of coexisting challenges.
Researchers found that students who heard either type of “struggle stories” improved their science performance post-intervention, relative to students in the control group. The effect was especially pronounced for lower performing students, for whom exposure to struggling stories led to significantly better science-class performance than low-performing students who read achievement stories. In addition, students who read struggle stories reported feeling
more personally connected to the scientists. By identifying a scientist's struggles and introducing the growth mindset he or she applied to accomplish great works, the students were able to empathize (共情) with the scientists during their own struggles.

(2025·洛阳高一期中)I had heard about VR being used in the classroom but didn't think I'd ever try it. I actually got a VR headset (耳机) as a New Year present from my friend and started searching for apps online to see whether it could be useful in my classroom. I soon found a free app through the Internet and knew I had a lesson!
To use VR in the classroom, you need two things: a smartphone that can download (下载) the app or video, and a headset. To find the actual videos we'd be watching, I searched through free VR apps. I also found hundreds of videos. The key is to find videos made with the 360 cameras. While they don't give the kids a 3-D experience like the apps, they are still amazingly immersive (沉浸式的) when viewed through the headsets.
So far we've had three lessons. I first used the headsets with my seventh grade US History class. The app allows students to “walk” through a trench (战壕) during World War Ⅰ and learn about many of the tools used during that time. My second activity was working with the sixth grade Geography class. They used the headsets strictly as viewers to watch a 360 video taking them through a rocky landscape. My final activity was the most interesting one, according to the reactions (反应) of my eighth grade Civics students. I was able to find a White House 360 tour that was made a few years ago.
For the rest of this year, I plan to continue using apps and 360 videos in my classes. Next year I'm going to buy a 360 video camera so that I can begin to create my own VR field trips for the students.

(2025·山东六校联考)When Perla Latorre-Suarez was a child, she remembers holding her brother's hand in the mountainous Orocovis region in Puerto Rico where she grew up and looking up a clear night as the International Space Station(ISS) flew overhead.“That day, my parents explained it to me; this is where all my interest in space came from,” Latorre-Suarez says.
Her love was further developed by a schoolteacher who encouraged her to pursue science, a trip to Kennedy Space Center during a family vacation, and visits to the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, which University of Central Florida(UCF) manages for the US National Science Foundation.Today, she is earning a master's
degree in aerospace engineering at UCF.Her current area of research is 3D printing sensors.“My biggest goal is to be able to work on space missions, such as the Artemis moon mission,” she says.“I want to ensure astronauts' safety while they are exploring other planetary surfaces.”
Latorre-Suarez decided to study at UCF because of its excellent and supportive faculty As an outstanding student, she had plenty of choices.“UCF has amazing teachers, such as Dr (Seetha) Raghavan, that are always willing to help their students to achieve their goals,” she says.“UCF has given me the opporty to grow as a professional and as a person.” Latorre-Suarez credits Raghavan with
her pursuit of space-related research at UCF.Together they pursued 3D printing and later determined they could probably use an autonomous application method for space missions. It is something Latorre-Suarez continues to work on today because she knows it will make a difference.
“Exploring space is important because we can get many answers that we will not be able to get here on Earth,” she says.“We can get answers about the history of our solar system and understand its formation.Through these answers, we will be able to expand technologies that will benefit us here on Earth as well as contribute to further exploration.”

It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West. We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad's friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze (吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn't going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. “Don't be late for supper,” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the track so that you don't get lost!” “OK!” my dad
cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. Dad and I found it was so cute that we decided to run after it. After a while, we were completely lost in the forest. There was nothing left in our sight but the trees. “We may not be able to make it back to the farm house in time for supper.” I thought to myself. After a series of useless attempts to find a way out, we felt hungry and tired.
We had no idea where we were and it was getting dark. We got stuck in the forest. And an unexpected shower added to the difficulty of us in finding a way home, for all the tracks we had made disappeared because of the rain. I was almost breaking down when my father said, “Don't worry, my son. I remember there is a river near the farm house. Find the river and we will be back home.” Finally, we found the river and got back to the house along it. Needless to say, we ate a late dinner.(共37张PPT)

One possible version:
My Reflection on “Active Learning”
I benefit a lot from reading“Active Learning” by Kevin Daum, which helps me better know how active learning works.
Before reading the text, I knew little about active learning. Now I understand there are many things we can do to become better learners. Our inner voice tells us personal opinions and our outer voice deals with others' opinions and things we have heard. If we listen to our inner voice too much, it can block us from learning. One of the best ways to promote active learning is to ask questions.
In the future, I will apply what I have learnt to my study and work, and learn to avoid listening to my inner voice all the time. On the other hand, I will also attempt to ask as many questions as I can.

One possible version:
My Reflection on “Roots & Shoots”
I have learnt a lot after reading the text “Roots & Shoots”. It's the name of an international institute which contributes to the protection of the environment.
Little did I know about “Roots & Shoots” before I read the text. Now I know that it was established in the early 1990s by Dr. Jane Goodall. It is called “Roots & Shoots” because roots move slowly under the ground to make a firm foundation. Additionally, although shoots seem small and weak, they can break open brick walls. The purpose of “Roots & Shoots” is to educate young people to protect the environment.
It's the duty of everyone to take action to protect the environment from now on. Just as Dr. Jane Goodall says, every individual makes a difference. We should try our best to make the world a better place.

The more I learn, the better I know how much there is still left to learn. As I journey through my life, I have become aware that acquiring knowledge is not only a means by which you can better understand the world, but also a way of appreciating how much, as an individual, you do not know. The ability to admit this should not be perceived as a weakness, but as a strength. I once had an art teacher,
pointing out that it is not only what you can see that is important, but also what you cannot see. When I drew a still life, it was impressed upon me that the blank spaces between the objects were just as vital to the success of the composition as the actual objects themselves. Also, as the great educator Confucius stated, “When you know a thing, to recognize that you know it; and when you do not know a thing, to recognize that you do not know it—that is wisdom.”
It is vital to remain lifelong learners in a rapidly changing world. As you progress through life, you may study and work in new environments. Consequently, you will be exposed to many new ideas, beliefs, practices and learning experiences. Furthermore, the production of knowledge is bound to grow rapidly. New knowledge is constantly being generated and what you already know is being revised all the time, to the extent that it can be difficult to keep pace with the
latest developments. Indeed, you may one day do jobs that do not yet exist, use technologies that are not yet developed and resolve problems that are not yet problems! This is not to suggest that there is no need for you to study in school but to acknowledge that refreshing your knowledge through lifelong learning is both essential and beneficial.

This guide will teach you how to learn English idioms effectively, so that you can make your conversations sound more natural. With this guide, you'll understand what idioms are, why native speakers use them so much, and how to learn and use idioms in your own conversations.
Idioms are a unique aspect of language that can sometimes be confusing for language learners. So, what exactly are idioms and why are they important Idioms are phrases or expressions that have a figurative (比喻的) meaning that is different from the literal interpretation (字面解释) of the words used. They are a way to add color, humor and depth to our conversations.
Native speakers of English use idioms all the time without even realizing it. They play an important role in understanding and communicating effectively.
Learning idioms is important for several reasons. Firstly, idioms can help you sound more like a native speaker. Including idioms into your conversations will make your speech more natural and fluent. Secondly, idioms are a key part of cultural understanding. Many idioms are deeply rooted in a country's culture, history, and by understanding and using idioms, you can learn more about the culture of the language you are learning. (2025·重庆八中高一期末)Michael Faraday was an English chemist and physicist born into a working-class family on 22 September, 1791. Faraday's father suffered from long-term health problems that often impeded his work. As a result, Faraday's family
had little money and Faraday got very little formal schooling. But Faraday had active curiosity and determination to learn. While working in London as a teenager, he had access to a wide range of books and read everything he could get his hands on. By doing a lot of reading, Faraday soon educated himself on many scientific subjects, and his life as a scientist began.
In 1812, Faraday attended four lectures at the Royal Society given by a famous chemist named Humphry Davy. Afterwards Faraday sent a letter to Davy, expressing a strong interest in the subjects covered in the lectures and offering his service as a lab assistant. A year later, Davy accepted Faraday as his lab assistant. Thanks to his work with Davy, Faraday got a complete scientific education.
He soon began to do research and experiments on electricity. Although his time was mostly spent helping Davy, Faraday began to work on his own as a chemist and scientist of great importance. When Davy retired in 1827, Faraday took his place as the head of the chemistry department of the Royal Society. Upon taking up the position he could focus on his own research, and Faraday's most influential and celebrated work began in the 1830s. In 1831, he
discovered electromagnetic induction (电磁感应), a breakthrough in the field of technology. In 1846, he gave a lecture that presented important ideas about the magneto-optical effect (磁光效应), and these later inspired the historical work of James Clerk Maxwell related to the electromagnetic field theory.

Where had the time gone Four years had disappeared in a flash. I stood with my certificate in hand and reflected on those four years.
I remembered arriving at university on my very first day, pausing at the gate to look down the long drive. I could feel my hands sweating slightly and I had to hold on tight to my suitcase. Would I be able to fit in Did this new phase of my life mean that I was now mature enough to be entirely responsible for my own successes and failures I took a few seconds to compose myself and to take in the scene that was laid

Little did I know that I was about to experience the best four years of my life.

3.当each、either、neither作主语或主语由each、either、every、neither、no修饰时,谓语动词用单数形式。
4.当with、along with、together with、like、but、except、besides、as well as、rather than、including、in addition to连接两个并列的主语时,谓语动词的单复数形式与前面的主语保持一致。
3.“all/most/half/the rest...+of+名词/代词”或“分数/百分数+名词/代词”作主语时,若名词或代词表示单数概念或抽象概念,谓语动词用单数形式;若表示复数概念,谓语动词用复数形式。
5.“a number of...”
2.由or、either...or...、neither...nor...、not only...but also...
