JUST A BROTHER
It was the final part of the 2016 World Triathlon Series in Mexico. With just 700 metres to go, Alistair Brownlee was in third place and his younger brother, Jonny, was in the lead. Alistair pushed himself towards the finish line in the burning heat, but as he came round the corner, he saw his brother about to fall onto the
track. Alistair had to choose—brotherly love, or a chance to win the race
For Alistair, the choice was clear. His brother was in trouble. He had to help. Alistair ran towards Jonny, caught him and started pulling him towards the finish line. Alistair then pushed his brother over the line. The move put Jonny in second place and Alistair himself in third. It was an unexpected end to the race, but Alistair did not want to discuss it with the media. He just wanted to see his younger brother, who had been rushed to the medical area.
The Brownlee brothers have been doing triathlons since they were children. “Obviously, when your older brother is doing it, you think it's a cool thing to do,” says Jonny. Alistair says that they encourage each other as much as they can when they train. Despite arguments over “stupid things” now and then, Alistair agrees that having a brother is an advantage. “Throughout my entire life, I've had my brother trying to beat me at everything I do. It has been an enormously positive force.”
1.What happened to Jonny when he was taking the 2016 World Triathlon Series ( )

A
(2025·黑龙江双鸭山一中月考)In 2016, I lost my long-term job. The company simply went through serious changes, and my position was no longer needed. They were great to me when I worked there, and they gave me a small severance package I was 55 at the time. I was more than a bit anxiety-ridden,
as I wasn't in a position to retire, and I was concerned about the prospects of being rehired at this age. The good news is that I was a saver, had no debt (债务) and always lived simply. My husband's job carried the benefits.
I woke up every morning at 4 am to consider how best to use my resources, and ended up starting a small business. Once I started, I made mistakes and messed things up, but kept educating myself more and more. There were tough times that were not easy to get through, but I managed to keep going.
After about 18 months it was working! Everything fell into place, and the train finally started going down the track! Now, I wake up each day and think, “I own a small business!” My husband even took early retirement to partner with me.
While we are not making $1 million, we have crossed over into six digits (数位) over the past few years. We run our business out of a home office. And I offer a service based on my knowledge from my previous job that I lost.
Now several times a month, friends and former workmates reach out to us to ask how they can also get started like what we do. Though we're busy, we take the time to talk with them sometimes. I know they really need help.
Nowadays it's easy to lose our jobs. Luckily, we've gained work experience, which can be really helpful if we want to start our own business. So don't be too frustrated if you lose your job. It might be a new opportunity for you.

Most of us are afraid to fail. Our fear of failure isn't surprising. From an early age, we're surrounded by people who value perfection. Parents tell us to bring home A's. Coaches teach us to go for the gold, not the silver or bronze(铜). And on social media, people share only the coolest parts of their lives. Usually they keep their struggles to themselves.
What's so bad about being afraid to fail It might seem like a “win at everything” attitude would push you to succeed. In reality, it can seriously hold you back. For example, many people get one bad grade on an algebra (代数) test and decide they're not smart enough for math.
According to experts, that's the wrong way to think. They say failing is good for you. It teaches you to stick with a task even when it gets hard. The ability to do this is called grit (毅力).
To people with grit, failure is not a reason to give up. It's a chance to improve. There's one place where failure is surely valued: technology companies. To the leaders of these companies, a failed app or website isn't a problem. It's a chance to build something better next time.
Tech leaders have even gathered for events called FailCons. At FailCons, they learn from ideas that didn't work. “Sometimes things
just don't go as planned,” says the FailCon website. “But that doesn't mean you should stop trying.”
That message got through to a man named Evan Williams. In 2005, he developed an app called Odeo. Not many people used it. It was a big disappointment. But Williams wasn't upset. Instead, he learned from his mistakes and kept working hard. He showed grit. And a few years later, he helped create one of the biggest social media site server.

A.They believe failure is shameful.
B.Failure blocks their way to success.
C.They do not know how to deal with failure.
D.Today's society puts a lot of pressure for success.

6.What are people with grit most likely to do when they fail ( )
A.Seek help. B.Keep working hard.

根据第三段中的“It teaches you...is called grit.”及第四段中的“To people with grit, failure is not a reason to give up.”

7.Why do tech leaders have FailCons ( )
A.To develop an app. B.To design a website.
C.To learn from failure. D.To develop work plans.
根据倒数第二段中的“At FailCons, they learn from ideas that didn't work.”

8.What can we learn from the example of Evan Williams ( )
A.Winners make it happen; losers let it happen.
B.Failure is a common thing in one's life.
C.Success comes to those who never give up.
D.The secret of success is not to change your goals.

Perhaps the overall prize for perseverance should go to three sisters from Victorian England who dreamt of seeing their words in print. This, however, was a time when women were not encouraged to become writers. As the then Poet Laureate, Robert Southey, wrote to one of them: “Literature cannot be the business of a woman's life, and it ought not to be.” Nevertheless, the sisters didn't stop trying.
Their response was to write a book of poems under male names. Even when the book sold only two copies, the sisters still didn't give up. They started writing novels, and today Charlotte Bront 's Jane Eyre, Emily Bront 's Wuthering Heights and Anne Bront 's Agnes Grey are regarded as classics of world literature. In fact, it is within the pages of Jane Eyre that we can find these words:“I honour endurance, perseverance, industry, talent; because these are the means by which men achieve great ends...”
So, it seems that talent alone isn't enough to guarantee success. While a lot of hard work and a touch of luck play a part, perseverance is the key. Keep trying and eventually you will read the words “We are delighted to inform you...”
1.What's the dream of three sisters from Victorian England ( )
A.Becoming men. B.Becoming writers.
C.Seeing their books published. D.Writing a book of poems.
2.What is the key to success according to the passage ( )

A
A PhD student in Michigan defended her paper while wearing a skirt made of rejection letters she received while studying.29-year-old Caitlin Kirby printed out 17 of her rejection letters—from scholarships, academic journals, and conferences—then folded each one into a fan. She connected them in rows, and in the end she made a skirt out of these “fans” and wore it.
She said that the idea behind her unique clothing item came out of a desire to normalize (使正常化) rejection and take pride in overcoming it.“The whole process of rereading those old letters and making that skirt sort of reminded me that you have to apply for a lot of things to succeed,” she said.“A natural part of the process is to get rejected along the way.”
Caitlin's adviser, Julie Libarkin, a professor of earth and environmental science at Michigan State University, also encourages the acceptance of failure in her students. Libarkin believes it's important for students to get into a habit of applying for things, and to get used to the feeling of rejection, so she encourages them to chase after any opportunity that comes their way. If a student doesn't get a grant or a spot in an academic journal, that's okay. They'll still have learned something in the process.
As for Caitlin, the rejections she received over the years have led to great things: Since her doctorate, she's won a scholarship to do further research on urban agriculture in Germany.
Currently, she's a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. As for what the future holds “I'm prepared to receive a few more rejection letters along the way,” she joked heartily.“Maybe I'll make a longer skirt.”

When John was growing up,other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him weeding the garden, carrying out the garbage and delivering newspapers. But when John reached adulthood,he was better off than his childhood playmates. He had more job
satisfaction,a better marriage and was healthier. Most of all,he was happier. Far happier.
These are the findings of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more productive lives than those who had not.“Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society,” said George Vaillant, the
psychologist who made the discovery.“And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them.”
Vaillant's study followed these males in great detail. Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47.Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the men's mental-health scores with their boyhood-activity scores. Points were awarded for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.
The link between what the men had done as boys and how they turned out as adults was surprisingly sharp. Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed. The researchers also found that IQ and family social and economic class made no real difference in how the boys turned out.
Working at any age is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and competence—the underpinnings (基础) of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must cooperate and work toward common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this. Yet work isn't everything. As Tolstoy once said,“One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love,to work for the person one loves and to love one's work.”

A
(2025·安庆期中)Mary Verdi-Fletcher was born with spina bifida (脊柱裂), a disease that causes weakness in the legs and spine. Undiscouraged, she was never upset and was about to be told what she could or could not do. She believes that someone who is an artist is an artist from the day he or she was born.
She dreamed of dancing and was determined to make her dream a reality. While still young, Verdi-Fletcher—dancing in her wheelchair—entered a dance contest with a friend. They won first prize. She entered and won more competitions, refusing to listen to people who said to her “You can't dance if you're in a wheelchair” or “Dancing in a chair is not really dancing”.
Nevertheless, Verdi-Fletcher was not satisfied with personal success alone. She wanted to make dance available to others with disabilities. In 1980, she founded a dance company called Dancing Wheels. Based in Cleveland, Ohio, Dancing Wheels performs all over the world. In productions like The Snowman, sit-down dancers perform with stand-up dancers. Modern lighting designs, fantastic sets and props (道具), wonderful music, and festive (喜庆的) costuming draw audience members into fairy tales and other stories.
In one show, a young stand-up dancer named Devin played “The Brother Who Cannot See” while a young sit-down dancer named Jenny performed the role of “The Sister Who Cannot Walk”. It was a lovely way to express a theme Verdi-Fletcher has represented all through her life: We all have disabilities. Some disabilities may be more noticeable, but hard work, and devotion to our dreams can make the seemingly impossible become a reality.

A scientist did some experiments. He left a group of 4-year-olds in a room with a bell and a candy. If they rang the bell, he would come back and they could eat the candy. If, however, they didn't ring the bell and waited for him to come back on his own, they could then have two candies.
In the videos of the experiments, he can see the children hiding their eyes, trying to exercise self-control so they can wait and get
two candies. The results are different. Some broke down and rang the bell within a minute. Others lasted 15 minutes.
The children who waited longer went on to get higher academic scores. They got into better colleges and had better adult success. The children who rang the bell quickest were more likely to have received worse teacher and parental evaluations (评价) 10 years later and were more likely to have negative problems at age 32.
The experiments are worth noting because people spend a lot of time thinking about how to improve education, and how to become rich. But when the result is not good, they will come back to ask “How do we get people to get the sort of self-control that leads to success?” This is to enter the world of human nature.
So these experiments, along with everyday experience, tell us that self-control is most important. Young people who can sit through sometimes boring classes to get a degree can work hard in order to learn a language well. They can avoid drugs and alcohol. For people without self-control skills, however, school is a series of failed and painful experience. No wonder they drop out and their later life is a group of foolish ideas, such as drug use, stealing and so on.

A.Just 15 minutes. B.Within 10 years.

C
Everybody, at some point in their lives, has experienced failure. It could be something as simple as not getting the job you wanted, or getting fewer marks even after hard work. But what makes you is not your failure, but how you get back up after being hit.
Once, a young school boy was caught in a fire accident in his school and was assumed that he would not live. His mother was told that he was sure to die, for the terrible fire had destroyed the
lower half of his body. Even if he were to survive, he would be lame throughout his life.
But the brave boy did not want to die nor did he want to be lame. Much to the amazement of the doctor, he did survive. But unfortunately from his waist down, he had no motor ability. His thin legs just hung there, lifeless. Eventually he left the hospital. But his determination to walk was unshakable. At home, when he was not in bed, he had to stay in a wheelchair. One day, he threw himself
from the chair and pulled himself across the grass, dragging his legs behind him. He reached the fence, raised himself up and then began dragging himself along the fence, firmly determined. He did this every day, with faith in himself that he would be able to walk unaided. With his iron determination, he did develop the ability to stand up, then to walk on and off, then to walk by himself and then to run.
He began to walk to school, and then run to school, to run for the joy of running. Later in college he was on the track team.
In February 1934, in New York City's Madison Square Garden, this young man who was not expected to survive, who would surely never walk, who could never hope to run—this determined young man, Dr. Glenn Cunningham, ran the world's fastest mile.
As a good example of the power of positive thinking and faith in oneself, Glenn Cunningham continues to be an inspiration for
many, and his story is a brilliant evidence to how one can bounce back even when all difficulties are piled against one, to the degree that death seems the preferable option.

A.Glenn was able to walk with his own great effort.
B.Great determination could make a difference to Glenn.
C.There was a slim chance that Glenn could survive.
D.Glenn could live a normal life with the upper half of his body.
根据第三段中的“Much to the amazement of the doctor, he did survive.”

11.What do we know about Glenn ( )
A.Glenn took recovery exercise in hospital.
B.Glenn inspired people with his moving story.

C.Go After Dreams D.Face Difficulty Bravely

A
Over the years, when a book has spoken to me with particular power, I have put pen to paper and sent word off to the author, communicating what his work meant to me.
It all started in my 18th year, when I was entertaining my own imaginations of success as a writer. I was full of high expectations, believing that becoming an author was merely a matter of putting my thoughts onto paper, sending the works to a publisher, and waiting for fame to come. Nevertheless, what came was total disappointment. I wrote to the famous children's author Lloyd Alexander, describing my fruitless year-long effort at publication and asking him for direction. To my delight, he answered:“Advice is
always very easy to give, but it's very hard to make it specific and meaningful since we all have to work in our own ways. When you mention that you've been writing for a year without being published, I hasten to tell you that I wrote seven times that long without being published! So, perhaps one piece of advice is: patience.”
I was encouraged by the idea that a well-regarded writer would take the time to offer a bit of advice to an overconfident teen. But Mr. Alexander was not a singular case (个别现象).I continued to
reach out to writers and, truth to tell, I didn't always receive a reply. But when I did get one, the content was often filled with consideration and even, at times, affection.
I think of the American poet William Stafford, who replied to me from Lake Oswego, Oregon. We actually had an ongoing correspondence (通信) for a while. I wrote to him asking if he would be so kind as to autograph (签名) one of his books for me. His reply brought an immediate smile to my face: “I am eagerly ready to autograph and return a book—it makes me feel like an author.”

(2025·天津市第四十七中学期中)In today's motivational literature, failure is often viewed as something to be celebrated. Inspirational speakers are fond of quoting the words of the novelist Samuel Beckett—“Try again. Fail again. Fail better.”
It seems that disappointments are an essential stepping stone to success, a turning point in our life story that will ultimately end in victory.
Nevertheless, psychological researches find most of us struggle to handle failure constructively. In other words, we fail to “fail forward”.We find ways to devalue (贬低) the task at which we failed, and become less motivated to persevere and reach our goals. This phenomenon is known as the “sour-grape effect”, which was discovered by Professor Hallgeir Sjastad.
Sjastad explains that the “sour-grape effect” is a self-protective mechanism (机制).“Most of us picture ourselves as competent people, so when external feedback suggests otherwise, it poses a serious threat to that self-image,” he says.“The easiest way out is to deny or explain away the external signal, so we can reduce the inconsistency and preserve a positive sense of self. We do this even without noticing.”
If you have one bad interview for your dream job, you might convince yourself that you don't really want it at all, and stop applying for similar positions. The same goes if you fail to impress at a sports trial, or if a publisher rejects the first submission of your manuscript.“We tend to explain away our shortcomings and convince ourselves our ‘Plan C’ is actually our ‘Plan A’,” Sjastad says.
It doesn't mean we should persevere in goals all the time. It can be healthy to change ambitions if the process is no longer
making us happy. But the “sour-grape effect” may lead us to come to this decision prematurely, rather than hanging on a little and seeing whether we might learn and improve.
Failures are unavoidable. By learning to face the disappointment instead of devaluing its importance and pretending nothing has happened, you may find it easier to achieve your goals.
5.What can we learn from paragraph 3 about the “sour-grape effect” ( )
A.It protects us from false feedback.
B.It pictures us as competitive people.
C.It poses a severe threat to the self-image.
D.It denies negative feedback to ourselves.

6.What is the author's attitude towards failure ( )
A.Short-sighted. B.Wait-and-see. C.Objective. D.Skeptical.
根据第五段中的“It doesn't mean we should...making us happy.”

7.What does the underlined word “prematurely” in paragraph 5 mean ( )
A.Unhappily. B.Mistakenly. C.Hurriedly. D.Carelessly.

8.Which statement would the author most probably agree with ( )
A.Don't escape when our self-image is broken.
B.Don't quit when goals no longer make you happy.
C.Never hesitate to replace “Plan A” with “Plan C”.
D.Never forget to maintain a positive sense of self.
根据最后一段中的“By learning to face...achieve your goals.”

Victor E.Frankl, the author of Man's Search for Meaning, once wrote,“Everything can be taken from a person but one thing: the last of human freedoms—to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances.” Frankl was right. Attitude is a choice. You could be faced with a thousand problems, many or most over which you have absolutely no control. However, there is always one thing you are in complete and absolute control of and that is your own attitude.
To be honest,it wasn't until I was in my late 20s that I finally understood its full impact. All through my teens and into my early adult life,I can't tell you the number of times that I heard,“Bob,if you'd just change your attitude, you would do a lot better.” At that time,I didn't know what attitude was,let alone know how to change it!
Attitude and results are inseparable. They follow one another as night follows day. One is the cause, while the other, the result. There is a term we use to distinguish this “cause and effect” relationship, which is called “The Law of Cause and Effect”. Simply stated,if you think in negative terms, you will get negative results; if you think in positive terms, you will achieve positive results. Some people always blame others or circumstances for their problems, while others take responsibility and make things happen.
The latter are in control of their life and achieve success through their choices.
You can experience that kind of life as well;you only need to decide. Dorothea Brande once said,“Act as if it were impossible to fail,” and I challenge you to do so. By simply becoming aware that you can choose your thoughts each and every day,you will change your entire outlook. You have the power to choose an abundant life, no matter what your circumstances are.
Don't wait to experience all the wonderful things the universe has in store for you. Start today by working on your attitude and welcome the abundant life that you are meant to lead.

根据第一段中的“Attitude is a choice.”和“one thing you are...that is your own attitude”可知,第一段主要是关于我们可以随时选择我们的态度。

10.Why does the author use the example of himself in paragraph 2 ( )
A.To show attitude is important to the old.
B.To prove attitude changes on its own.
C.To show understanding attitude takes time.
D.To prove the author was very stubborn.

11.What does “The Law of Cause and Effect” help readers to do ( )
A.Understand what causes a good attitude.
B.Know the benefit of choosing active attitude.
C.Analyze the effect of a negative attitude.

根据第三段中的“There is a term...you will achieve positive results.”
