In the heart of Shanghai, a quiet but powerful movement is growing. More and more middle school students are stepping out of their classrooms and into their communities—not for homework, but to volunteer.
Take 14-year-old Li Hua from Jing’an District, for example. The new Shuangliu Yangtze River Bridge recently passed its final checks in Hubei, China. This bridge is over 35 kilometers long and connects the cities of Wuhan and Ezhou. It is special because it passes through a protected wetland and an area where rare Yangtze finless porpoises （江豚）live. Engineers worked hard to build a bridge that helps people travel without hurting nature.
To protect local animals, the team used clever designs. They built a huge 400-meter "noise wall" to keep the bridge quiet for birds living nearby. They even changed the bridge's path to avoid bird migration routes. For the finless porpoises in the water, the team built the main bridge in one big jump across the river. This meant they did not have to put any poles in the water, leaving the porpoises' home untouched.
The project is a great success for both people and the environment. Traveling between the two areas now takes only 5 minutes instead of 90! Most importantly, the number of porpoises in the area grew from about five to twenty during the building process. Workers say that protecting these "river pigs" has become a team habit. In 2008, I was hiking with friends when one got hurt. We called for help, but it was dark and we were lost. Luckily, Blue Sky Rescue found us, and I was so thankful!
I’ve never forgotten that day. Since then, I’ve wanted to help others, so I joined Blue Sky Rescue in 2009 as a volunteer. We teach safety skills in communities, rescue people in emergencies, offer medical aid, and search for the missing after disasters, like the 2013 Ya’an earthquake and the Philippines typhoon.
Working as a volunteer has taught me many practical life-saving skills. It has also helped me understand the power of teamwork because it’s the key to successful rescues. Most of all, being a volunteer has taught me the value of every life.
The work is difficult. It’s voluntary, so we aren’t paid. We often go without food or sleep. But our goal has always been to save as many people as we can. I’m just an ordinary person, but I’ll rush into danger, just like everyone else in Blue Sky Rescue. To the people we’ve saved and their loved ones, I know we’re their heroes.
