Chengdu, China.
If visiting a place with happy locals is a top choice for you, there’s no better city to hit than Chengdu. It is home to pandas and spicy things. Its thick jungle will give you a good chance to uncover a paradise of your own.
Zakynthos, Greece
If you’re looking for an affordable European summer beach vacation, consider Zakynthos. Food is cheap and mouthwatering. Although there are plenty of free things to do, the favorite is spending time on the beautiful beaches edged by electric blue water. There are countless options for swimming in the appealing sea, along with charming villages and museums to explore.

It was a dream come true to study at one of the oldest and best universities in the world. I enjoyed living and studying in Oxford which is little old town with rich history and beautiful buildings. The studying pace was very fast and demanding. However, there was still enough room to have fun with friends from my cohort (同伴). I really enjoyed the social life and being surrounded by like-minded people from all around the world.
I was surprised by how diverse the student body was when I arrived in Oxford. It is a melting pot (熔炉) of extremely smart and talented people from different cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Another shock I experienced was the obvious divide between students and locals. Oxford is after all not just a university but also a town inhabited (居住于) by locals. Although we all share the same space, there is almost no interaction between the students and the locals.
During my studies, I could not work because there simply wasn’t enough time to balance a demanding academic program and a job. Luckily I was on a scholarship that covered all of my costs so I didn’t have to worry about it. At the end of my master’s program, I interned (实习) at the Open Society Foundations.
I come from a low-income family in Croatia, and as a young person, I never thought I would be able to visit places like the UK, let alone study at a world-famous and expensive university like Oxford. Later I realized that there are actually many scholarships and programs that help students like me gain access to higher education. I would recommend young students from disadvantaged backgrounds to think big and not give up on their dreams. The doors will open for those who are determined and positive.
4. What did the author like in Oxford
A. The social life and his cohort’s company. B. The fast and demanding studying pace.
C. The old and beautiful buildings. D. The local cultural history.
5. Why was the author surprised on arrival in Oxford
A. The beautiful town. B. Friendly local people.
C. Smart and talented people. D. Students from different backgrounds.
6. How did the author pay the costs in Oxford
A. With the help of the Open Society Foundations. B. With the support of a scholarship.
C. By attending some programs. D. By doing part-time jobs.
7. What does the author tell the young students
A. They should study in famous universities. B. Scholarships will make them excellent.
C. They should try hard to realize their dreams. D. Students from low-income families are not bad.

Cultural differences do exist, but we can really use them to tighten our relationship as human beings, because there is strength in diversity. We are going to expose some interesting cultural differences around the world. Read these cultures to help you travel out of your homeland!
In Greece, spitting (吐痰) at weddings is believed to drive away devils (恶魔). Funny as it sounds, this cultural tradition is an important practice. What is more shocking, this spitting is focused on the bride. It is regarded as a good luck to bless the couple, However, things have been changed in some parts of Greece these days. Wedding guests just face the bride and make sounds and impressions that show they are spitting on her without actually spitting.
Everybody knows Thai people are so friendly, but their culture demands that you never point your feet at any statue. In addition, they also consider the head to be more important than other parts of the body. This is why it is disrespectful to touch another person’s head in Thailand. It is the same with statues. If you see a statue, avoid touching its head as well.
Russians are very hospitable. In their culture, food is a serious business. Lunch is the most important and heaviest meal. If you get invited by your Russian friend for a meal, don’t ever refuse it — they find it impolite. You might want to skip your own meals to leave space in your stomach for the food you will eat in Russian gatherings. This is a very interesting cultural difference between Russia and other nations.
With limited knowledge about cultures outside your own, you won’t be able to really flow with a foreigner. Know more about the cultural differences around the world and make your life easier.
8. Why do the Greek spit at weddings
A. To add fun to the wedding.
B. To drive away bad luck and bless the couple.
C. To celebrate the new wedding.
D. To express their dissatisfaction with the couple.
9. What should be avoided if you are in Thailand
A. Eating too much food for a meal.
B. Touching your head in your home.
C. Refusing your friends’ invitations;
D. Pointing your feet at the statue you see.
10. What does the underlined word“hospitable” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Famous. B. Welcoming. C. Active. D. Clever.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Beautiful Tourist Attractions in the World.
B. The Most Delicious Food in Different Countries.
C. Interesting Wedding Traditions in Asian Nations.
D. Surprising Cultural Differences Around the World.

Students and Technology in the Classroom
I love my blackberry (黑莓手机) — it’s my little connection to the larger world that can go anywhere with me. I also love my laptop computer, as it holds all of my writing and thoughts. Despite this love of technology, I know that there are times when I need to move away from these devices (设备) and truly communicate with others.
On one occasion, I teach a course called History Matters for a group of higher education managers. My goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes and ideas. Because I want students to thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom, I have a rule-no laptops, IPads, phones, etc. When students were told my rule in advance of the class, some of them were not happy.
Most students think that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology. There’s a bit of truth to that. Some students think that I am anti-technology. There’s no truth in that at all. I love technology and try to keep up with it so I can relate to my students.
The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations and engage complex ideas. Interruptions by technology often break concentration (专心) and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas. I want students to dig deep within themselves for inspiration and ideas. I want them to push each other to think differently and make connections between the course material and the class discussion.
I’ve been teaching my history class in this way for many years and the evaluations reflect student satisfaction with the environment that I create. Students realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom.
I’m not saying that I won’t ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a rally good reason for the change, I’m sticking to my plan. A few hours of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up.
12. Some of the students in the history class were unhappy with ______.
A. the course material B. others’ misuse of technology
C. discussion topics D. the author’s class rules
13. The underlined word “engage” in para.4 probably means ______.
A. explore B. accept C. change D. refuse
14. According to the author, the use of technology in the classroom may ______.
A. keep students from doing independent thinking
B. encourage students to have deep conversations
C. help students to better understand difficult themes
D. affect students’ concentration on the teacher’s ideas
15. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the author ______.
A. is quite stubborn in teaching B. will give up teaching history
C. will change his teaching plan soon D. values technology-free dialogues in his class

【答案】Dear Nancy,
Knowing that you have a great passion for traditional Chinese festivals, I am writing to introduce the Dragon Boat Festival to you.
Falling on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, the festival is celebrated to commemorate the great patriotic poet Qu Yuan. Last year, I celebrated it with my family. Not only did we make and enjoy delicious Zongzi together, but we also watched an exciting dragon boat race, which left a deep impression on me.
I sincerely invite you to come to China to experience this unique festival in person next year. I am looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
