Nici Mense, the New York Jets’ first full-time dietitian, faces the demanding task of managing the daily nutritional needs of professional athletes. Recently, she has successfully completed her seventh season with the team.
Properly fueling players so that they feel the difference in their performance is something she learned while playing soccer at university. “I found soccer to be more demanding on my body than I had expected, and I needed to maintain my energy through proper nutrition to match my performance on the field,” she said. “This realization changed my perspective. I’ve always loved sports and food, so combining the two made the most sense.”
Mense joined the New York Jets and has stayed in tune with the team’s schedule. “My hours vary from time to time,” she said. “It’s the busiest during training camp through the end of the season. We will work seven days a week unless it’s our bye week, when we don’t play a game during the season. We ensure players fuel properly before, during and after practice. They receive recovery shakes, snacks and fruit for post-practice recovery. While they are in training throughout the day, that’s my time to plan for the weeks ahead.”
Mense describes herself as “obsessed” with her field, constantly evolving and gaining knowledge. “If I am the same dietitian three years from now, then I am doing something wrong,” she declared. “The more open-minded I am, and the more I am able to learn as a professional, the better I can help athletes with their goals.”
Occasionally, athletes need a warm-up period when working with a dietitian. “It can be quite challenging to prove that dietitians are here to help them and that we are not the food police,” said Mense. “There are times when a player doesn’t listen to the education and injures themselves. But it’s always so awesome to see when it works for them.” Nevertheless, Mense feels fulfilled in her role and continues to push the athletes, knowing that nutrition is key to fueling performance, recovery and long-term health.
By staying at the forefront of her field, Mense provides athletes with essential nutrition strategies to support their performance, recovery, and long-term health. With her dedication and expertise, it’s clear that professional athletes are truly eating their way to victory.
24.What motivated Mense to choose her career
A.Her experience of playing soccer.
B.Her ambition to make life changes.
C.Her admiration for athletes’ spirits.
D.Her dream of being a professional athlete.
25.What can we learn about Mense
A.She takes a break when players are in training.
B.She keeps her professional knowledge updated.
C.Her priority is to provide post-game recovery meals.
D.She works seven days a week during the season period.
26.Why does Mense sometimes find it hard to work with the athletes
A.They put their own interests first. B.They complain about their diet.
C.They disagree about the schedule. D.They doubt her role in the team.
27.Which words can best describe Mense
A.Determined and generous. B.Humble and innovative.
C.Talkative and open-minded. D.Enthusiastic and committed.

Flashy, high-tech proposals that promise to remove pollutants out of the sky before they hit the atmosphere have attracted attention and investment — but are falling far short of expectations. Now a growing number of scientists are trying a much simpler approach: collecting truckloads of logs, branches and sawdust and burying them.
The concept of wood burial is straightforward: instead of constructing massive machines to collect atmospheric carbon dioxide and put it miles down into the Earth, people simply shift materials from Earth’s fast-paced biological carbon cycle into the much-slower geological (地质的) carbon cycle.
“Every year, plants absorb six times as much carbon as our fossil (化石) fuel release. But almost all of that goes back into the atmosphere as leaves fall and trees die,” says Ning Zeng, a University of Maryland climate scientist, who has been a leader in a related field for two decades and was not involved in the new research.
However, if carbon dioxide is buried under just a few yards of dirt — where bacteria no longer have the oxygen they need to break down wood — none or very little of it is released. If even a small number of woody pieces that decompose aboveground each year were treated this way, it would be easier to achieve the 10 billion tons per year of carbon that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change agrees must be achieved by 2050 in order to keep the planet’s temperature rise to less than 2℃.
Trees in logging-focused forests take up roughly 170 billion tons of carbon every year, 14 billion tons of which finds its way into wood. The researchers say that all of this wood eventually ends up being wasted in one form or another. If all this wood could be collected and buried instead of burned or allowed to decompose, those 14 billion tons of carbon would be safely removed every year. And according to the research team’s models, that would remove a grand total of at least 770 billion tons from the atmosphere by 2100, turning the global temperature down by at least 0.352℃.
28.What are the high-tech proposals like in the first paragraph
A.Complicated but promising. B.Less effective than expected.
C.More advanced than imagined. D.Cost-saving and widely applied.
29.What do Ning Zeng’s words show
A.Burying wood is a way to handle the carbon problem.
B.The plant life cycle is a major contributor to carbon release.
C.Fossil fuel release is a source of carbon absorption by plants.
D.Carbon absorbed by plants is permanently stored in their bodies.
30.How does wood burial prevent carbon from being released
A.By speeding up the biological carbon cycle.
B.By providing enough oxygen for bacteria to work.
C.By constructing massive machines to process wood.
D.By creating an oxygen-lacking environment underground.
31.What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refers to
A.The decomposition of wood aboveground.
B.The process of collecting and burning wood.
C.The research teams model about carbon reduction.
D.The action of collecting and burying all wasted wood.

The soft song of the wren (鹪鹩) once commonly marked sunrise in the central Amazon jungle. But recently, it was a rare wonder when the song cut through the morning darkness. This has received little public attention, yet it is ringing alarm bells among bird scientists. According to their research, numerous bird species are growing increasingly rare, from the Amazon rainforest in Brazil to protected reserves in Ecuador and Panama.
By comparing long-term bird monitoring data over recent decades, researchers have found birds are disappearing from surprising places — expanses of forest untouched by fires, logging or human clearing. These aren’t migratory species in decline because of habitat loss on distant continents; many spend their entire lives in a single area of trees. Further study shows that all studied bird species weigh less now than in the 1980s, suggesting they are not well fed. The hardest-hit species are insect-eating birds, including the musician wren and the black-tailed leaftosser, some of which have declined by nearly 80 percent.
Given that insect populations are highly sensitive to temperature and rainfall changes, scientists suspect climate change might be the underlying cause of the birds’ decline. To explore the exact link between climate patterns and bird survival, researchers launched an experiment in the Amazon. They set up irrigation systems in undisturbed forest plots, supplementing dry-season rainfall to reproduce the wetter conditions of the 1980s. Early results are promising: compared with birds in unwatered areas, those in watered areas have higher fat levels, fewer stress signals and more active reproductive behavior.
Combining long-term observations and experimental evidence, scientists reached a conclusion: climate change is the leading cause of the mysterious bird decline in untouched rainforests. Higher dry-season temperatures and unstable rainfall patterns damage the food chain by reducing insect numbers.
Although the research might help explain why birds are disappearing, it may not point to any solutions. “The best that we can do is really try to slow down climate change as much as possible,” says Corey Tarwater, a University of Wyoming ecologist.
32.What phenomenon is presented in paragraph 1
A.Damage to forest bird habitats. B.Secrets of biodiversity reserves.
C.Decline of forest bird populations. D.Threats to endangered bird species.
33.What can be inferred from paragraph 2
A.Forest birds hardly rely on insects for food. B.Food shortage accounts for the loss of birds.
C.Migratory birds are facing greater challenges. D.Human activities are to blame for bird decline.
34.Why did researchers conduct the Amazon experiment
A.To figure out effects of climate on birds. B.To restore damaged rainforest ecosystems.
C.To increase insect numbers in dry seasons. D.To protect endangered insect-eating birds.
35.What is the best title for the passage
A.Forest Birds: The Victims of Habitat Destruction
B.Irrigation Test: A Crucial Lifeline for Forest Birds
C.Climate Change: A Hidden Threat to Forest Birds
D.Insect Decline: The Underlying Cause of Bird Loss

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Aesthetic (审美的) Education and the Flourishing Self
In an age focused on test scores and career success, aesthetic education is often pushed to the margins (边缘) . 36 . Learning to see, appreciate, and create beauty is central to becoming a whole, healthy person.
Aesthetic education trains our senses and sharpens our perception. It teaches us to notice color, light, pattern, and harmony in nature, art, and daily life. 37 . It improves our ability to observe, analyze, and understand the world around us.
38 . Studies show that looking at art or spending time in beautiful natural settings lowers anxiety and improves mood. In a fast-paced, stressful society, aesthetic experience offers a much-needed pause. It helps us find peace and balance amid chaos.
Beyond mental health, beauty shapes-our moral character. When we experience beauty — whether in a sunset, a symphony, or a poem — we often feel awe, gratitude, or wonder. These “self-transcendent” emotions lift us beyond selfish concerns. 39 .
Aesthetic education also promotes creativity and originality. 40 . It teaches us to think freely, take risks, and express our unique voices. These qualities are essential not just for artists, but for all kinds of problem-solving and innovation.
In short, to neglect aesthetic education is to neglect a part of what makes us human. Beauty develops our minds, heals our emotions, and shapes our souls. A life without beauty is a life only half-lived.
A.Yet beauty is not just decoration
B.Still, beauty is often seen as non-essential
C.Beauty also calms our minds and reduces stress
D.They encourage kindness, generosity, and care for others

Mrs. Henderson’s neat rose garden was the pride of the neighborhood, and she took great care to maintain it. Next door, Mr. Patel and his family moved in six months ago, bringing with them a love for gardening that Mrs. Henderson initially appreciated.
One day, Mrs. Henderson noticed Mr. Patel’s young son, Aryan, playing near the fence that separated their properties. She watched as the little kid reached through the fence and picked a few rosebuds (玫瑰花蕾) from her roses. Mrs. Henderson’s heart sank. These roses were special —they had been planted by her late husband.
Without thinking, she opened the window and shouted, “Put that back, young man! Those are my roses!”
Aryan was frightened, dropping the rosebuds and bursting into tears. Mrs. Henderson felt a bit of guilt but remained firm. “Go tell your father to keep his son out of my garden!”
Mr. Patel heard the noise and came over. He turned to Mrs. Henderson. “What’s the matter, Mrs. Henderson ”
“He took my roses!” Mrs. Henderson pointed to the rosebuds. “You need to teach your child some respect.”
Mr. Patel’s expression hardened. “I’ll handle my son, but a child’s curiosity is natural.”
Mrs. Henderson crossed her arms. “Natural or not, it’s my property. If you can’t control your child, maybe you shouldn’t have moved here.”
The words hung in the air, sharp and unforgiving. Mr. Patel’s face turned red with anger. “You're being unreasonable. I’ll make sure Aryan stays away, but I won’t tolerate your cruelty.”
With that, he walked away, Aryan still weeping in his arms. Mrs. Henderson closed the window, feeling a mix of regret and firmness. She knew she had overreacted, but the thought of her roses being damaged was too much to bear.

【原文】M: Good evening, and welcome to News Night. I’m David Chen. Tonight, we have a special guest with us. Dr. Sarah Williams is an environmental scientist at City University.
W: Thank you for having me, David. It’s a pleasure to be here.
M: Dr. Williams, let’s start with the highly-debated topic. Our city has seen record-high temperatures this summer. Is this related to climate change
W: Absolutely. What we’re experiencing is not just a hot summer — it’s part of a long-term pattern. The data shows average temperatures have risen by two degrees over the past fifty years.
M: That’s alarming. What does this mean for ordinary people living in the city
W: Well, there are several impacts. First, health risks increase during heat waves, especially for elderly people. Second, we’re using more energy for air conditioning, which puts pressure on the power.
M: Those are serious concerns. Are there any solutions that individuals can adopt
W: Yes, definitely. Planting trees around your home provides natural cooling. Use public transportation more. And choosing energy-efficient appliances helps lower electricity demand.
M: What about larger changes
W: Cities need more green spaces, not just parks. We also need better public transportation. And buildings should have better designs.
M: Dr. Williams, thank you for sharing.
W: My pleasure.

W: Hello everyone. I’m Deborah Apau, and I’ve been serving as a reading volunteer for children at the San Jose Public Library for several months. I’m here today to share my experience with you.
When I first started, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But I quickly discovered that being a reading volunteer is about more than just listening to kids read. I help children practice their reading skills in a relaxing environment. What I love most is watching them gain confidence. Shy children gradually become excited about books and stop worrying about getting every word perfect.
The library staff have been incredibly supportive. They make me feel valued and appreciated.
This experience has also connected me to my own childhood. When I was young, my mother would take my brother and me to the library after school. Those visits built my love for books. Now, as a volunteer, I feel like I’m giving back to a place that gave me so much.
If you’re considering volunteering, I highly recommend it. Thank you.

根据第一段“Flashy, high-tech proposals that promise to remove pollutants out of the sky before they hit the atmosphere have attracted attention and investment — but are falling far short of expectations.(那些宣称能在污染物进入大气层前将其清除的炫酷高科技方案,虽吸引了关注与投资,实际效果却远不及预期。)”可知,第一段中的高科技方案实际效果达不到预期。
29.推理判断题。根据第三段“Every year, plants absorb six times as much carbon as our fossil fuel release. But almost all of that goes back into the atmosphere as leaves fall and trees die.(每年植物吸收的碳量是化石燃料排放量的六倍。但随着树叶凋零、树木枯死,这些碳几乎又全部重回大气之中。)”可知,曾宁的话语说明了植物的自然循环是碳释放的一个主要因素。
30.细节理解题。根据第四段的“However, if carbon dioxide is buried under just a few yards of dirt — where bacteria no longer have the oxygen they need to break down wood — none or very little of it is released.(然而,如果二氧化碳埋在几码深的泥土下——细菌不再有分解木材所需的氧气——那么它就不会或几乎不会被释放出来。)”可知,木材通过创造一个地下缺氧环境来阻止碳释放。
31.词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“If all this wood could be collected and buried instead of burned or allowed to decompose, those 14 billion tons of carbon would be safely removed every year.(如果将这些木材全部收集掩埋,而非焚烧或任其腐烂,每年就能稳定封存140亿吨碳。)”可知,“that”指代的是“收集并掩埋所有废弃木材”这一行动。

【答案】32.C 33.B 34.A 35.C
【导语】主要讲述亚马逊等雨林鸟类数量莫名减少,研究探究其原因,证实气候变化是未受干扰雨林鸟类减少的潜在威胁。
【详解】32.细节理解题。根据第一段中的“According to their research, numerous bird species are growing increasingly rare, from the Amazon rainforest in Brazil to protected reserves in Ecuador and Panama.(根据他们的研究,从巴西亚马逊雨林到厄瓜多尔和巴拿马的保护区,许多鸟类物种正变得越来越稀少。)”可知,第一段呈现了森林鸟类种群数量下降的现象。
33.推理判断题。根据第二段中的“Further study shows that all studied bird species weigh less now than in the 1980s, suggesting they are not well fed. The hardest-hit species are insect-eating birds, including the musician wren and the black-tailed leaftosser, some of which have declined by nearly 80 percent. (进一步研究表明,所有被研究的鸟类物种如今的体重都低于20世纪80年代,这说明它们的食物摄入不足。受影响最严重的是以昆虫为食的鸟类,包括琴鹪鹩和黑尾拾叶雀,其中部分种类的数量减少了接近80%。)”可知,食物短缺是鸟类数量减少的原因。
34.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“To explore the exact link between climate patterns and bird survival, researchers launched an experiment in the Amazon.(为探究气候模式与鸟类生存之间的确切联系,研究人员在亚马逊开展了一项实验。)”可知,研究者做实验是为了弄清气候对鸟类的影响。
35.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第四段中的“Combining long-term observations and experimental evidence, scientists reached a conclusion: climate change is the leading cause of the mysterious bird decline in untouched rainforests.(结合长期观测与实验证据,科学家得出结论:气候变化是未受干扰雨林鸟类数量莫名减少的主要原因。)”

67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

1.续写的词数应为150个左右;

Mr. Patel opened the door, where stood Mrs. Henderson.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】The next morning, Mrs. Henderson woke to find a small package on her doorstep. Inside was a beautifully crafted wooden plate, marked with the words “Sorry for the trouble” and some fresh rosebuds. A note attached read: “Mrs. Henderson, I hope this makes up for yesterday. Aryan and I want to be good neighbors. — Mr. Patel.” Mrs. Henderson’s heart softened. She had been so focused on her roses that she had forgotten the bigger picture — community and understanding. That afternoon, she went next door with a plate of freshly baked cookies.
Mr. Patel opened the door, where stood Mrs. Henderson. Mrs. Henderson smiled. “I brought this as a peace offering. I apologize for yesterday. I shouldn’t have spoken like that.” Mr. Patel responded, “Thank you. I appreciate it.” They decided to find a way to share the garden without any misunderstandings. Mrs. Henderson would plant roses along the fence, while Mr. Patel could plant as he wished on his side. Mrs. Henderson realized fences were meant to separate, but gardens and neighbors were meant to bring people together. The roses were a bridge, not a barrier.
