Step 1: Lead-in Activity 1: Play the game “I describe, you guess!”. Show clues related to charity logos (e.g., “It helps animals. Its logo is a panda.”) and have students guess the charity (WWF, Save the Children, etc.). End with Orbis. Activity 2: What can you see in the logo Why is there an eye, a plane and an earth in the logo Design Intent: To activate prior knowledge about charities from the previous lesson, create an engaging and interactive start, and smoothly transition into the focus on Orbis. Step 2: Pre-reading Activity: Ask: What do you know about Orbis Why do you think there are charities like Orbis Design Intent: To activate students' prior knowledge and personal understanding of the charity's purpose, creating a context for the upcoming reading. This helps bridge their existing ideas with the new information in the text and engages them emotionally with the theme of necessity and aid. Step 3: While-reading Activity 1: Have the students look at the article and ask: What’s the genre (体裁) of the article Who are the two speakers in the interview Give students some tips: When interviewing somebody, we should be well prepared with background knowledge of the topic. Remember to ask questions one at a time and allow the interviewee time to think and respond. Design Intent: To explicitly introduce and analyze the interview genre. By identifying the speakers and discussing interview etiquette, students learn to recognize the structure and purpose of this text type. Activity 2: Read for Structure Students quickly read to match each paragraph range (Lines 1-8, 9-22, 23-26, 27-34) with its main content (The situation of eye problems / The way Orbis helps / The work Dr Ma has done / The support needed). Design Intent: To help students grasp the overall structure of the interview and understand how the conversation develops logically. Activity 3: Read for Details Students read carefully to answer specific questions for each section: Part 1 (Problems): 1. How many people have eye problems 2. How many cases can be prevented or cured 3. Why are numbers used Part 2 (Orbis’s work): Fill in the blanks. What is the plane used as Why is it used as a training centre? Part 3 (Dr Ma’s experience): 1. How many patients were operated on in his last visit 2. How does he feel Thinking: What do you think of Dr Ma Part 4 (Call for support): 1. Why can most eye problems be treated now 2. What does Orbis need Thinking: How will you support charities like Orbis Possible answer: Share Their Story, Raise Funds, Promote eye care awareness, Build skills for tomorrow Design Intent:To guide students through a close reading of the text, ensuring they extract and comprehend key factual details, numerical data, and reasons that explain Orbis's mission and methods. The follow-up "Thinking" questions push students to interpret information, make personal connections, and transition from understanding to potential action, deepening their engagement with the content. Step 4: Post-reading Activity 1: Complete a thank-you letter from an Orbis patient. Design Intent:To apply the learned vocabulary and concepts in a new context. Writing from the perspective of a patient allows students to use the language meaningfully, demonstrate understanding of the charity's impact, and practice empathetic writing. Activity 2: Let’s design a slogan for Orbis! Examples: Flying light to darkened lives! Bringing sight, changing lives! Design Intent: To guide students to synthesize their comprehension of Orbis’s mission and impact by creating concise, powerful slogans. It moves beyond factual recall to foster language creativity, concision, and emotional engagement. Students internalize the charity’s value and practice turning understanding into persuasive expression, thereby deepening their connection to the cause and reinforcing the unit’s core message of empathy and action. Step 5: Homework Must-do: Search for more information about other charities. Optional: Create a short video or poster to introduce Orbis’s work. Design Intent: To reinforce key takeaways, provide structured review, and offer differentiated tasks that extend learning beyond the classroom, catering to varying interest levels. 展开更多...... 收起↑ 资源预览
