You may know the saying: An apple a day keeps the doctor away. A recent study by the Chinese University of Hong Kong has discovered another saying: An apple a day keeps old age away.
The study involved fruit flies, as they share many genes (基因) with humans. Researchers gave food to two groups of fruit flies. Both groups got the same fruit, with one exception: The second group also got apples, while the first did not.
The results showed that flies that ate apples lived an average of 55 days longer than the flies that didn’t eat apples. The study also found that apple-eating flies were more able to walk, climb and move about as they became old, Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry reports.
The researchers believe that the antioxidants found in apples are good for health. In another experiment, researchers studied the diets of thousands of women. They found that those women who often ate apples were 20 percent less likely to have a heart attack.
Scientists have recently discovered the apple’s genetic code (遗传密码). This allows scientists to make new kinds of fruits that are healthier. Researchers are already using this information to grow apples with added antioxidants. Antioxidants help to keep eyes and joints (关节) healthy and protect against heart attacks and cancer.
Apples that help people lose weight may be in supermarkets in just four or five years. They are said to be “extra healthy” apples that can stop people from overeating.

Ben walked away to continue his work. Mary began talking to the robin. She felt happier than she had ever felt.

Mary skipped (跳跃) around the garden. The robin followed her. Mary stopped skipping and spoke to the robin.
“He showed me where to find the key,” she thought. “Can you show me where the door is ”
The robin sat on the top of the garden wall. It began to sing. The wall was covered with ivy. Mary pulled at a piece of the ivy. It came away from the wall. Behind the wall was a door. 五、阅读与表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
Reading a good book is a wonderful journey because the reader can live-in someone else’s world for a while. Reading together with others, known as buddy(同伴) reading, will make this journey even more fantastic. During the journey, the buddies spend time doing a lot of reading activities. This not only adds to the pleasure of reading, but also deepens their understanding of the books.
Although it is all right to have students join in buddy reading with schoolmates of the same age, schools usually pair up older students with younger ones. In 2021, Green School started such a programme and has achieved a great success.
Both younger and older readers in this school have learned a lot from this two-year programme. For example, when they listened to each other, they learned to be kind and patient. This experience also provided them with a chance to practise lifelong skills such as exercising leadership and communicating with others. A student called Jason said that reading to a younger buddy was really helpful. He became more confident, as he knew he was a role model for someone.
The school also became a closer community. The reading buddies felt closer as they often met each other. The students were always excited when they saw their buddies pass by in the hallway.
Now the summer vacation is coming. It’s a great time to get into books. Why not pair up with a friend, choose a book you both like and read it together

1. What is buddy reading

I think reading is as important as travelling.
Reading is important. For us, reading can not only offer us many different kinds of knowledge, but also open up a whole new world to us. When we are reading books, we can feel the beauty of nature.
Moreover, travelling is also important to us. When we are travelling, we can know different cultures about different countries. We can also see the real beautiful views. We can get both knowledge and happiness. Travelling is a good way to help us get excellent experiences.
So, I think reading is as important as travelling. Let's be interested in both of them!
Thank you for listening!
