Why Many Young People Enjoy Reading E-books
These days, more and more young people are choosing to read e-books instead of paper books. Three young readers from different countries share why they enjoy digital reading.
In China, I think e-books are very convenient. My schoolbag is already heavy with textbooks, so carrying paper books for fun reading would be too much. With my e-reader, I can have hundreds of books in a device that weighs less than a notebook. I also like that I can adjust the font size. When my eyes feel tired, I make the text larger. Another great thing is that I can look up new words immediately just by tapping on them. This helps me learn English faster. I sometimes miss the smell of paper books, but the convenience of e-books wins for me.
Here in Brazil, e-books have changed how I read. Paper books in English are very expensive in my country. With e-books, I can buy international books at much lower prices. I also love that I can start reading a new book immediately after buying it online — no waiting for delivery. My favorite feature is the built-in dictionary. As a student learning English, this is incredibly helpful. I do enjoy visiting bookstores and looking at beautiful paper covers, but my budget and learning needs make e-books the better choice.
In India, I prefer e-books because they are better for the environment. Producing paper books requires cutting down trees and using lots of water. E-books don’t need paper at all. I also like that I can read on my phone anywhere — on the bus, while waiting for friends, or before bed. My reading habit has grown a lot since I started using e-books. However, I still buy paper books for my absolute favorite stories because I like to put them on my shelf. For everything else, e-books are perfect.

VII. Writing (Sample):
Dear Mr. Wang,
I am Li Hua from Grade 9. I am writing to share my environmental idea for the “Green Campus, Green Future” activity.
I have noticed that many students in our school use disposable plastic water bottles every day. These bottles create a lot of waste and harm the environment. My suggestion is to install water fountains on each floor and encourage students to bring reusable water bottles from home. The school could also sell eco-friendly water bottles with the school logo at a low price.
This solution would greatly reduce plastic waste on campus. It would also save money for students who no longer need to buy bottled water. Moreover, it would teach everyone to form environmentally friendly habits.
Thank you for considering my suggestion.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
