My wife Hannah and I don’t usually keep houseplants. Anything in pots always ends up either over-watered or under-watered. But after I received bad news about my health, I began to want something green in our home to feel better.
At that time, my friend Mitch came to give me a plant called lucky bamboo. It stood straight in the pot. I fell in love with it at once and decided to take care of it. I put it by the window where sunlight could shine in. Every morning, I gave it a little water and gently cleaned its leaves.
For weeks, the bamboo thrived. Its leaves were soft and bright green and it grew taller and stronger every day. But gradually, thin yellow spots (斑点) began to spread along the edges of the leaves. I watered it more often and added special plant food, hoping it would be well soon. However, no matter what I did, the leaves stayed yellow. Each day, I stood quietly by the window for a long time, watching the weak plant, wondering if it and I would both be able to go through the difficulties.
One evening, Hannah noticed my silence. “You’ve cared for it with all your heart each day,” she said softly. “Sometimes growth takes time, and recovering (恢复) needs time too.”
Hearing her words, I was no longer worried. At that moment, the weak bamboo standing before me inspired me to keep moving forward, just as I was trying my best to help it recover.
I kept caring for it patiently. Slowly, new green leaves appeared. And the leaves danced gently in the wind. It seems to say that hope is returning slowly.

Leo found a turtle and named it Charlie. He hadn’t many friends because he was slower than other kids. He was slow in reading, slow in numbers, slow in understanding nearly everything. Leo thought he would never be fast, and he saw no way to be happy. But Charlie took care of Leo’s happiness. Every day, Leo came home and told Charlie what had happened.
Then one day Leo decided to take Charlie to school in a box. It was Prevent Forest Fires Week and there was a speech competition. When it was his turn, he set the box on the teacher’s desk.
“When somebody throws a match into a forest,” Leo began his speech, “he is a killer. He kills trees and birds and animals. Some animals, like tigers, are fast. But other animals” — he lifted Charlie out of the box — “have no hope. They are too slow. They will die. It isn’t fair for the slow ones.” He talked about Charlie the turtle and Charlie the friend. What he said made everyone love turtles and hate forest fires.
That afternoon, the whole school gathered in the hall. The headmaster began his long speech about the competition. Leo’s thoughts drifted off (走神). Then he heard someone call his name. “Leo! It’s you! You won! Go on!”
He saw the headmaster smiling. Leo’s legs moved like Charlie’s — quickly and forward. He shook the headmaster’s hand and accepted the award (奖项). Leo had won an award for the first time in his life. His heart filled with happiness.
