四、阅读理解
It's winter in Siberia in the east of Russia.Lake Baikal is covered with ice.If you want to get to Olkhon Island, more than 27 kilometres out from the shore, you can't take a boat. You have to drive across the ice.But don't worry because the ice is about 60 centimetres thick.Just try not to think about how much water is below you.Try to forget that you're traveling over the deepest lake in the world.
At its deepest, Lake Baikal is about 1,640 metres deep. The lake is more than 630 kilometres long and it is over 25 million years old.On either side of it, there are mountains which are very slowly moving apart—by about 2 centimetres each year.
Around the beginning of the twentieth century, the Trans-Siberian Railway was built, crossing Russia from west to east. Before then, it was difficult to travel across Siberia's long distance,so Lake Baikal was quite an isolated (与世隔绝的) place.Building the railroad along the shore of the lake was a difficult job, but it enabled more people to visit the area.
Olkhon is the largest island in the lake. For the local people, it is a scary place. For them, Lake Baikal is not simply a lake.It is the “father” of 337 “daughters”.These “daughters” are all the rivers and streams around the lake.In a legend, one of the daughters, Angara, ran away from the family. This explains why the Angara River flows out of the lake while her 336 “sisters” flow into it.
Lake Baikal is usually frozen from January to May.When the weather gets warmer and the ice breaks, visitors can take a boat to Olkhon to enjoy the quiet beauty of this place.
1.Why was Lake Baikal an isolated place before the Trans-Siberian Railway was built
A.Because the ice on the lake was too thick to cross.
B.Because there were no boats to take people to Olkhon Island.
C.Because local people didn't allow visitors to come.
D.Because it was difficult to travel across Siberia's long distance.
2.What does the word “enabled” mean
A.Allowed. B.Prevented. C.Reduced. .Recorded.
3.What can we infer from the legend about Baikal and its 337 “daughters”
A.The Angara River is the only river that flows out of Lake Baikal.
B.All rivers around Lake Baikal are called Angara.
C.Local people think Lake Baikal is not important.
D.The 337 “daughters” are all islands in Lake Baikal.

The Yellow River is a precious treasure of China.People living near its banks are always worried about floods(洪水).Now, scientists can solve these flood problems better with a digital (数字的) copy of the river. This helps stop floods from causing harm.
The digital copy uses technologies like big data, AI, and the internet.Tools placed along the river collect information and send it to a control centre. With this information, the system makes a model. Then, a 3D picture on screens shows how the river is doing right now—It's like the river's digital copy.
One great thing of the copy is “smart stones”.They look like real stones, but they are special tools.Workers put them on dikes(堤坝).The stones can feel if the dikes move and send warnings right away. These sensors(传感器) help keep floods from becoming more dangerous.
Above the water, drones (无人机) fly in the sky.Engineers set fixed routes for them. The drones watch the dikes and send new information. They take photos and share reports, so experts can update the 3D model whenever needed.Together with tools under the water, this technology protects the whole Yellow River area.It also makes digital management in the future even better.

A.To make the Yellow River look more beautiful.
