I was in high school and my brother Nels was a senior, and talking about going to the university. My sister Christine was graduating from Winford Middle School, and she was so smart that she won a medal. Mama kept the shiny medal in a beautiful box.
To Mama and Papa, an education was the finest thing in the world, and unlike other parents we knew, they did not think it a sacrifice (牺牲) to keep us all in school.
We naturally expected Christine to go on to high school. But Christine—without a word to any of us—got herself a job in a factory.
Mama pleaded and pleaded, but Christine kept going to work.
She brought her first week’s pay home and put it on the kitchen table. “It is for you, Mama.”
“I do not want it,” Mama shook her head sadly.
“What’s wrong with it, Mama I worked hard for it.”
“It is not good money. It is taking away from you the chance at an education. Better that you forget the job, my Christine, and go on to high school.”
But Christine only left the money on the table. And since Mama wouldn’t touch it, it stayed right there.
One week’s—two weeks’—coins piled up on the table.
The third week’s money was added to the pile, and it was like a weight upon us. No more laughter and little jokes as we sat around the table.
Papa did lots of extra work so that Mama could get herself a coat.
“Always,” he said, “something happens when you go to buy the coat. This time, you must buy for yourself.”
Mama said she would. And later that day, Mama came home with a heavy package.
“The coat!” Dagmar, my little sister, cried.
Nels opened the package and in silence took out twelve big books.
“Complete High School Course,” he read, “In Twelve Easy-to-Read Volumes (册).”
“For Christine,” Mama explained. “She will get the fine education right at home.” Mama smiled at Christine. “You will do that for Mama ”
Christine touched the books. “You spent your coat money for these ”
Mama shrugged (耸肩). “I can get the coat another time. But these—Christine ”
Christine smiled and looked right at Mama. “Tomorrow—tomorrow I will go to high school with Nels and Katrin.”
“What are you going to do with the coins on the table ” Dagmar asked loudly.
Christine swept the coins up and put them in the Little Bank. “For furniture,” she said.
“Life is good,” Mama said with satisfaction. “Life is so good.”

①Everybody knows that Earth spins from west to east. When we see from above the North Pole (北极), it seems to be spinning counterclockwise. That is to say, it’s opposite to the way clock hands move. But what if Earth started spinning the other way
②Scientists from Germany have made a computer model in which Earth spins from east to west when we see from above the North Pole. This showed them some interesting things about the weather and topography (地形地貌) on Earth, Live Science reported.
③As Earth spins in a counterclockwise direction, it shapes ocean currents (洋流). The direction of the spin, together with wind, produces different kinds of weather around the world.
④But an opposite spin changes the ocean currents and winds. So, the climate is different. Winters become even colder in northwestern Europe, while eastern Russia becomes warmer than before. Rain no longer falls on the planet’s wettest places.
⑤Another result of a backward spin is that Earth becomes greener. Scientists found that the size of global deserts dropped from 42 million km to 31 million km . This may have something to do with the changing climate.
⑥Therefore, you can see green landscapes from Central Africa to the Middle East, which are mostly covered by deserts now. More surprisingly, the Sahara Desert becomes an oasis.
⑦ ▲ They just show up in some places where they had never existed before. Deserts would cover North America where countries like the United States and Canada are located. Sand dunes (沙丘) would replace the Amazon rainforest in South America.
⑧A backward spin would keep the main characteristics of Earth's topography, such as the size, shapes and positions of continents and oceans. But it would also change the interactions (相互作用) between air, ocean and topography, lead scientist Florian Ziemen told Live Science.
34.Which picture shows the meaning of “counterclockwise” in paragraph one
A. B.
C. D.
35.Which sentence can be put in the ▲

B.As a result, global deserts are gone forever.

Some bright sparks (火花) light up the night sky, creating a fantastic rain of flowers. This exciting performance is Striking Iron Flower (打铁花). It is a traditional folk art form, and it has been around for more than 1,000 years in China. It is deeply rooted (根植) in traditional Chinese culture.
Striking Iron Flower usually takes place during important festivals such as the Spring Festival and the Lantern Festival. People get together to watch this wonderful performance. The blooming (盛放的) sparks are seen as bright symbols of happiness and good wishes.
Striking Iron Flower is a highly skilled performance. To begin with, the performers put waste iron in a big oven. Then, they heat the iron at a very high temperature until it becomes liquid (液体). Finally, they use special tools to splash (泼洒) the liquid iron into the air. When the liquid iron meets the cold air, it will turn into beautiful sparks. A performer needs to have strong arms, good skills and a lot of courage. It shows the creativity of Chinese working people.
In order to keep traditional Chinese culture alive, we should protect and pass down this traditional art. Nowadays, more and more young people are getting interested in it and learning about the skills. They hope to carry forward this special art form and let it shine in the future.

例文
Love yourself, Laoji
Recently, the phrase “love yourself, Laoji” is very popular. I think loving ourselves is very important for middle school students. It helps us keep both physical and mental health, and face challenges more bravely.
I used to stay up late studying every day. I often felt tired and stressed. That was not loving myself well.
Now I develop a new hobby — playing basketball. It makes me strong and helps me forget worries. I also share my worries with my parents and friends. Talking makes me feel lighter and warmer. I also try to sleep early and eat well to keep healthy.
Loving ourselves is the beginning of a happy life. Let’s start from today and take good care of ourselves.
