——Unit 5 Working the land

【Analysis of the teaching contents】
The reading lesson is selected from Book 4 Unit 5. It talks about the great scientist--Yuan Longping, mainly about his indentity, education, research, achievements, qualities and his dreams. By reading the passage, students could have a deeper understanding of Dr. Yuan’s life choices and it is helpful to for students to follow the role model to shoulder the responsibility to society and seek for noble careers.
【Analysis of the students】
As senior students, they have some background information about agriculture and Dr. Yuan but their abilities of analyzing the text and extracting information efficiently are still improved. At present, students’ values and outlook on life is being formed so learning this passage is quite educational and helpful.
【Teaching objectives】
1）Language competence
Through reading, students will enable to understand the main idea of the reading material and to use the target language to talk about Dr. Yuan and hybrid rice development
2）Cultural awareness
students can develop a sense of social responsibility;

Students will use English to think independently and critically

Students will be willing to take part in the class activities and cooperate with other group members .

Help students to apply reading strategies to get a good understanding of the text and then form a structural knowledge of how to describe a person.

Guide students to use the target language to talk about Dr. Yuan and the process of developing hybrid rice.

【Teaching procedures】
Step 1 lead in (6 mins)
At the beginning of the class, I will show some pictures about great people we have learned and a question---when it comes to rice, who comes to your mind first Then discuss how much do them know about Dr. Yuan. The teacher will give corresponding comments on students’ answers and show the topic of this lesson.
Justification: The pictures about great people we have learned can activate students’ original background knowledge. The questions can arouse students’ interest and lead in today’s topic naturally.
Step 2 pre-reading (3mins)
Students are asked to read the title together and then encouraged to share what they want to know from the passage, based on the title and picture.
(Justification: to arouse students’ curiosity about the passage as well as train their ability of prediction.)
Step 3 while-reading (20mins)
Activity 1 fast reading
Students are asked to read the passage quickly to find the topic sentence of each paragraph, especially paying attention to the transitional words. Then guide students to summarize the main idea of each paragraph just using a word .
Justification：to develop students’ ability of skimming, scanning and summarizing
Activity 2 careful reading
Para 1 &2 : fill in the table about Yuan Longping
Para 3: find out the process of developing hybrid rice and work in pairs to retell the process with a partner in your own words according to some key words.
Para 4: read the paragraph carefully and try to answer the following questions.
Q1: what is the meaning of “for all people” from the title
Q2:why does the author list many numbers or facts in this paragraph
Para 6: Q: Can you find more supporting details to explain “ongoing”
(Justification: In this activity students will comprehend the passage in detail and their reading ability of getting specific information and comprehending will be improved.)
Step 4 post-reading (8mins)
Ask students to work in groups draw a mind map about the qualities of Yuan Longping and collect their works to appreciate them by projecting them onto the screen. Give feedback and make corresponding comments.
(Justification: By group discussion, students’ critical thinking ability can be developed . Through sharing their own ideas with others, they’ll be increasingly confident to use English to communicate and cooperate with others.)
Step 5 summary and assignment (3mins)
Make a brief summary of what we’ve learned today and assign the homework
1. Surf the Internet to find more information about great famines happening in 1940s to 1960s in China.
2. How do you understand Yuan’s words “My lifelong pursuit is to keep all the people away from hunger” on page 49 after reading the passage
(Justification: Making a summary can deepen students’ impression and help them form a good learning habit. Besides, the homework can help students have a deeper understanding of hunger and Yuan Longping’s contributions )
