Diving isn't just about swimming alongside various marine species, but the adventure also involves appreciating nature as a work of art. One diver Gary Grayson from Worsley had a rather shocking experience with two seals that were swimming around him.
During one of his dives off the coasts of the Isles of Scilly, England, Grayson got lucky and found two young seals. One of the seals approached him first and started playing with him by touching his hand. The diver remained still, hoping it would leave him alone, while the seal went on with its actions. The marine creature kept exploring Grayson, who had no idea why the seal wouldn't leave him alone.
It turned out that the animal had something adorable in mind and dragged at Grayson's arms slightly because it wanted a scratch (挠) from the diver, and Grayson instantly understood. As he gently scratched the animal, it seemed to enjoy it and wanted more. The diver was excited about this heartwarming interaction with the seal. “I was absolutely loving it,” the 55-year-old experienced diver said.
“We were told just to keep still but the more still we were, the more curious this seal was because we were in their world,”the diver explained. After the first seal was done playing with him, the second seal that was swimming around the diver started to take an interest in his legs.
Being an adventure lover, Grayson always loved living life on the edge. But the time he had with those two seals underwater was something extraordinary for him. The video shot by Gary from more than a decade ago gained online popularity. While the Internet often considers seals as the “dogs of the sea”, their behavior in this video shows how that comparison might be true.

In the depths of Abernethy Forest, researcher and conservationist Jack Bamber has just placed deer meat in the hope of attracting every nearby predator (捕食者). It may sound weird, but it’s all part of a plan to catch the attention of predators who might otherwise be interested in lunching on a capercallie (松鸡) chick and it’s quite normal. Capercaillies are large, secretive birds known for their striking fan tails. However, in Scotland, their population is critically low, with only about 500 left during 2021 — 2022.
Bamber’s method, known as diversionary feeding, involves leaving meat near capercaillie habitats during the breeding (繁殖) season. The goal is to provide predators like pine martens and badgers — both protected species — with an easier meal, reducing the chances of them attacking capercaillie nests. This approach helps protect capercaillies without harming predators.
Initial trials have been promising, showing an 83% reduction in nest predation in areas where meat was provided. However, this is just one of many strategies needed to save the species. Other efforts include educating the public to avoid disturbing the birds, particularly in places like the Cairngorms National Park, where dogs and hikers can unintentionally stress the birds or disturb their habitats.
Carolyn Robertson, manager of the Cairngorms Capercaillie Project, works to minimize human disturbances. He said, “Dogs, even on leads, can cause capercallies to feel threatened. Public awareness campaigns have helped local dog owners understand the importance of keeping their pets under control. Additionally, initiatives like the ‘Lek it be’ campaign urge people to leave the birds undisturbed during the breeding season.”
The species faces multiple threats, including habitat loss, conflicts with deer fences, and the impact of climate change, which affect food availability and chick survival. Conventional wisdom holds that people are easily affected by first impressions, and there's solid scientific evidence that initial judgements and impressions are hard to shake—even when they turn out to be inaccurate. But according to the new study, "sleeping on it "can help us avoid judging a book only by its cover.
In a series of online experiments, researchers asked participants to evaluate virtual boxes of goods to determine which were most valuable. Each box contained mostly low-value items like old alarm clocks or potted plants, with a few valuable ones such as nice lamps or teddy bears. Unbeknown to the participants, however, the combined total value of the 20 items in each box was the same, and only the arrangement of "junk" and “gems (宝石)” differed. Some boxes had valuable items on top; some in the middle or at the bottom; and some had them mixed.
After the participants had opened the different boxes, the researchers asked them to estimate the value of each one. Some participants judged the boxes immediately, but others “slept on it” and decided after an overnight delay.
“By comparing, we found that people are strongly biased (有偏见的) by first impressions,” says lead author Allie Sinclair. “Not only did the participants consistently go for the boxes that “started strong” over the others, they also tended to overestimate their value — guessing they were worth 10% more money than they actually were. However, participants who weren't asked to decide until the next day were less likely to fall into these traps.”
Judging from first impressions can be beneficial for immediate choices. For instance, when watching a movie's opening scene or skimming a book's first pages, quick judgements can save time. But for long-term decisions or significant life choices like hiring or dating, Sinclair said there wisdom in the idea of “sleeping on it” before making a decision.
