Podcasting (播客) has grown rapidly in recent years, gaining popularity among people who wish to make good use of their time while walking, working, or relaxing. Among its listeners is Leo, a 26-year-old librarian who once found his daily commute (通勤) extremely dull. He frequently killed time by watching meaningless short videos, which left him feeling even more tired and empty afterward.
One day, a friend recommended a podcast featuring inspiring real-life stories. Leo was immediately drawn to it. Unlike short videos, podcasts require focused listening and enable listeners to picture scenes with their own imagination. This active mental participation felt refreshing to Leo. He soon formed a habit of listening for 30 minutes on each journey to and from his workplace, turning previously wasted hours into something meaningful.
He soon made it a daily rule. At first, Leo worried that he would lose interest soon, as he had never been able to concentrate on long audio (音频) shows before. However, the stories were so attractive that he gradually began to look forward to his daily listening time. He explored a wide range of topics, including history, personal experiences, and popular science.
As time went by, Leo became more focused at work and at home, and he gained fresh insights from what he listened muting no longer felt like a tiring burden; instead, he regarded it as a valuable chance for self-improvement. He even began taking brief notes to memorize useful knowledge, such as historical facts or practical life tips, which he later reviewed during breaks.
Leo also shared his favorite podcasts with colleagues and friends. They started exchanging ideas and holding discussions about what they had learned, making his daily life more enriched and satisfying.
“Podcasts transform wasted time into meaningful learning,” Leo commented. “It is incredible how much we can gain simply by listening with full attention.” For him, what once felt like dead hours have now become a journey of continuous learning and curiosity.
4. What can we infer about Leo from the first paragraph
A. He felt dissatisfied with his job. B. He was extremely tired of his lifestyle.
C. He disliked communicating with others. D. He failed to manage his commute time wisely.
5. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. Listening to podcasts. B. Imagining inspiring things.
C. Watching short videos. D. Recommending real stories.
6. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. Trouble that Leo faced. B. Benefits that Leo received.
C. Efforts that Leo made. D. Pressure that Leo suffered.
7. What message does the author convey
A. Break out of your shell. B. Change a habit, change your life.
C. Think twice before you act. D. Master time, master your future.

Festivals are meant for music, dancing, and celebration — not for leaving behind piles of rubbish. While this idea has long been a shared belief among festival-goers, the reality often tells a different story. Festivals like Coachella and Stagecoach produce about 214,000 pounds of waste a day, and only a fifth of it is recycled.
The carefree feeling at festivals — where people try to escape everyday duties — can sometimes lead to careless habits, like throwing things away without thinking. But this also gives us a chance to help people change how they act. If festival-goers learn to take responsibility for their impact on the environment while they’re there, they might keep those good habits when they return home. “That’s why we need festivals that show what a clean, waste-free event can look like,” says Heather White, founder of One Green Thing. “If people’s attitudes don’t change, even strong government rules won’t solve the problem.”
This idea finds its purest expression in Norway’s Oya Festival. As Norway’s largest outdoor music festival, Oya is recognized as Europe’s Greenest Festival. First, nearly all of the 22,000 attendees travel to the festival by public transport or bike, which removes the biggest source of pollution at most festivals-travel. Second, while UK festivals burn about 100 million gallons of diesel fuel every year, Oya runs almost entirely on clean energy. This is possible because more than 90% of Norway’s electricity comes from renewable sources like water and wind. Finally, to reduce plastic waste, Oya forbade single-use plastics in 2019. Nearly all food packaging is turned into a renewable fuel after the festival. About 60% of the festival’s total waste is recycled, which is about three times the rate at Coachella.
Oya proves that it’s possible to have fun while protecting the environment. But one green festival alone can’t fix the planet’s problems. Only when the whole music industry works together can we expect festivals with pure joy and no pollution.
8. Why are the two festivals mentioned in paragraph 1
A. To compare their musical styles.
B. To show how fun festivals can be.
C. To introduce popular music events.
D. To give examples of wasteful festivals.
9. What’s important for green festivals, according to Heather White
A. Government measures. B. Festival-goers’ feeling.
C. People’s attitude change. D. Careless environmental habits.
10. How does the author show the effectiveness of Oya’s measures
A. By giving expert advice. B. By making comparisons.
C. By listing government rules. D. By telling an inspiring story.
11. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Oya is the only green festival in Europe.
B. The music industry needs to join hands.
C. Pure joy is hard to achieve at music festivals.
D. Oya Festival has completely got rid of pollution.

Before becoming a therapist (治疗师), I had no idea what it meant to “hold space” for somebody. Now, the term is widespread on social media and serves as the foundation of my work. Holding space is the backbone of supportive relationships and bridges the gap between two people when one person is in hardship.
The term “holding space”was first popularized by Heather Plett, a writer in Canada. In a 2015 blog post, Plett described holding space as “the act of being fully present with someone else, without judgment or distraction, so that the person can share their experiences and perspectives. This looks like creating a safe, accepting environment, engaging in attentive listening and offering non-judgmental support.” Research shows that holding space can reduce stress and anxiety, enhance relationships, and improve mental health and well-being.
Holding space is no easy task. It requires the patience to be calm, to delay a response even when someone has upset or frustrated you. It also requires radical acceptance, a release of your ideas abou who the other person should or can be, and openness and honesty about who they actually are.
These skills require us to know ourselves as well. “Holding space is a form of attunement (调和) or the ability to be aware of our own state of mind and body while also tuning in and connecting to another person,” the University of Pennsylvania professor Edward Brodkin said. But “holding space” doesn’t ask us to honor others’ feelings without comment or response. Instead it is a baseline of love and acceptance from which a deeper, more genuine connection can grow.
As Brodkin puts it, “It’s a way of investing in your relationship, developing it and enabling it to grow. In order for the relationship to grow, you need to be able to see them for who they really are. If you can’t, then how can you know them with any depth ”
12. Why is Heather Plett’s comment mentioned in paragraph 2
A. To explain the definition of “holding space”.
B. To indicate the challenges of “holding space”.
C. To reveal historical facts about “holding space”.
D. To present the skills required for “holding space”.
13. What does “radical acceptance” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. A skill to keep distance with others.
B. An effective way to process your emotions.
C. An ability to find opportunity in adversity.
D. An emotional reaction to the cruel reality.
14. What does Brodkin advise us to do
A. Stop being affected by others’comments.
B. Pick an investment account.
C. Build a healthy relationship with others.
D. Show the greatest tolerance to others.
15. What is the best title of the text
A. “Holding Space”: A Practice of Forgiving Others
B. “Holding Space”: The Art of Supportive Relationships
C. The Power of “Holding Space” to Get Out of Trouble
D. The Benefits of “Holding Space” in Changing Oneself

The sky had darkened early that afternoon, and by evening, the storm had reached its peak. Waves crashed against the shore, which seemed to shake the foundations of Seabrook, a small coastal village. Most villagers had taken shelter in their homes.
Captain James, an experienced fisherman, had been caught at sea when the storm hit. His small boat was no match for the towering waves, and he had sent out a distress signal (求救信号) before losing contact.
In the midst of the storm, the village’s lighthouse keeper, Old Tom, was the first to hear the distress call. He immediately informed the people in the village, and soon, a group of volunteers gathered at the lighthouse, determined to help.
Among them was Sarah, a young nurse who had recently moved to the village. She had never experienced a storm like this before, but she was driven by a sense of duty. “We have to do something. Captain James is out there, and he needs us.”
The villagers quickly made a plan. Old Tom would keep the lighthouse beacon burning brightly to guide James back to shore. Meanwhile, volunteers, including Sarah, would prepare a rescue boat to go out and search for him.
As they prepared the boat, the villagers worked together. Fishermen shared their knowledge of the sea, while others gathered supplies and equipment. Sarah helped prepare a medical kit, knowing that James might need immediate care if they found him.
The boat was tossed (摇晃) about by the waves, and the wind threatened to destroy it at any moment. But the volunteers pressed on, driven by their concern for James and their unwavering belief in the power of community.
It was a long time before they spotted a small light in the distance. It was faint (微弱的) but unmistakable — a sign that James was still alive and fighting. With renewed hope, they sailed the boat towards the light, their hearts pounding with a mix of fear and determination.

Dear Felix,
I am glad to tell you something about the Dragon Boat Festival. The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival or Double Fifth Festival, falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar.
Nowadays, the festival is celebrated by dragon boat races and eating Zongzi. On this special day, a number of strong men are selected to take part in the exciting boat races in the nearby rivers.
By celebrating it, we not only follow the trace of the ancestors, but also get together with our families. It reminds us of Qu Yuan’s patriotic spirit for the country and inspires us to study hard and grow up to serve our motherland, building our motherland into a more prosperous and strong country.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
【答案】 When they finally reached Captain James, he was exhausted but alive. He was clinging to his broken boat, pale and numb from the cold. Sarah immediately wrapped him in warm blankets and checked his injuries. "You're safe now," she said gently. The volunteers lifted him onto their boat, and with Old Tom's guiding light, they slowly headed back. As they touched the beach, villagers rushed forward with dry clothes and hot drinks. James looked at the familiar faces, tears on his cheeks.
In the days that followed, the village came together to help Captain James recover. Neighbors brought him homemade soup, while Sarah visited daily to care for him. The experience had forged an unbreakable bond. James often reflected on that night, knowing he owed his life to their courage. “Seabrook isn't just a village," he told Sarah. “It’s a family.” And as the lighthouse beam swept across the calm waters, it symbolized the enduring strength of a community that stood together against any storm.
