Seurat created this painting in a special style called pointillism (点彩画法), which uses small dots (点) of colour. By putting two colours next to each other, people could see a third colour.
This painting is full of details about French life in the 1880s. There are several women wearing nice clothes and carrying parasols (遮阳伞). One woman is even walking a monkey. Others are walking or fishing. Many of the men are dressed in jackets and hats. And people can see dogs running around and children playing. There are boats on the water. It looks like a perfect summer day.
This painting makes people feel calm. Even though a park like this could be a noisy place, Seurat makes it feel peaceful. He paints people sitting quietly in the shade (阴凉处). There is a girl smelling flowers. She looks so beautiful. Throughout the painting, people are relaxing on the cool, green grass and enjoying a beautiful day.
Seurat spent two years finishing this beautiful painting. People are thankful that he completed it. It is a very peculiar painting because of Seurat’s use of pointillism, his attention to details and the peaceful feeling he created. In a word, so many people like this painting.
