I have long realized that people who have grown up on a farm have a leg up on so many future job prospects.
Exposed to the very true saying that necessity is the mother of invention, farm kids witnessed parents who could
perform a master class on figuring out a solution to any number of breakdowns on the fly.
We all knew the names of hand tools before we started first grade. Much of this education transferred without a
word uttered, and no praise or reward was expected. People who visited my parents were always astonished that we
kids got our barn boots and headed out the door for milking time without a word said. There was no complaining.
We knew that the sooner we got started, the sooner we would be done.
What we didn’t realize is that we were learning life skills and mastering simple strategies to deal with challenges
that unavoidably landed in our path. We could draw on dozens of previous experiences we had helped our parents
through.
Not too long ago, I heard a friend of mine saying that hiring a young person who was raised on a farm is a dream
find and getting harder to come by as our landscape changes. This fact is worrisome in nearly every career lane. If a
young nursing student has assisted with animals, there is sympathy and attention to detail already in the makeup of
that student. Judgment has been developed, helping to determine a minor issue versus a major one. A young truck
driver who grew up working on tractors (拖拉机) already has an eye for safety. If a tire is low, it will be checked and
addressed before hitting the open road.
A young person starting just about any job starts at a disadvantage if they’ve done nothing but play throughout
their life. Most of my classmates, even if their own parents were not farmers, had the opportunity to be hired by a
farmer, even if just for summer work. However, that fact has changed greatly over the years, even in my rural
community. I truly miss those simple, golden days.
24. What does the author think of farm life
A. It is boring and exhausting. B. It is practical and educational.
C. It is filled with job opportunities. D. It is full of frustrations.
25. Which of the following would the author’s friend approve of
A. The job market is increasingly competitive.
B. It’s getting harder to hire qualified employees.
C. Farm experiences bring out fine qualities in people.
D. People raised on a farm are disadvantaged in most careers.
26. What is the author’s attitude toward the change mentioned in the last paragraph
A. Upset. B. Tolerant. C. Favorable. D. Doubtful.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Why Practical Skills Matter B. How to Get Better Job Prospects
C. The Gift of Growing up on a Farm D. The Simple Pleasures of Farm Life

Grief can bring waves of heartache – but for most people, those feelings gradually fade. For some, they don’t.
The loss remains intense, persistent, and difficult to handle in daily life. This condition, known as prolonged grief
disorder (PGD), was added to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5 (DSM-5) in 2022.
“There’s something blocking their ability to finally say, ‘I have to accept this,’” says Katherine Shear, director
of the Center for Prolonged Grief at Columbia University. Researchers are now beginning to understand why. PGD
may involve breakdowns in the brain systems that govern attachment and reward, according to a 2026 study published
in Trends in Neurosciences. In people with prolonged grief, those systems may continue to signal that the lost loved
one is still expected, creating a conflict between memory and reality.
PGD is a “long-term, intense, painful reaction to loss,” says Holly Prigerson at Weill Cornell Medicine.
Individuals remain “stuck”, marked by persistent longing and not accepting the reality of the loss. Grief is considered
PGD when symptoms last longer than 12 months.
How does it affect the brain Regions involved in reward and motivation appear to remain active. “People with
severe grief are still expecting the existence of what is gone, making it harder for the brain to update and accept the
loss,” says Shear. Research published in 2020 also found that PGD involves different activity patterns in the amygdala
PGD can lead to a higher risk of death. One reason is that prolonged grief keeps the body in a lasting stress
response. High levels of cortisol (皮质醇) can hurt the heart system and interfere with immune function.
The most common treatment is Prolonged Grief Therapy. “The treatment focuses on helping people accept the
reality of the loss and restore their capacity for well-being, but formal recognition of PGD is crucial, as it ensures
accurate diagnosis and effective treatment for those stuck in this disabling experience,” Shear explains.
28. What is PGD according to the text
A. Grief that can’t be treated.
B. Grief that brings heartaches.
C. Grief that comes from great loss.
D. Grief that doesn’t ease with time.
29. What does the study published in 2026 mainly focus on
A. Who PGD affects. B. What PGD brings.
C. How PGD works. D. Why PGD spreads.
30. How does PGD affect humans according to Katherine Shear
A. It disturbs brain functions. B. It reduces memory activity.
C. It weakens the immune system. D. It shortens people’s lifetime.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Official identification of PGD leads to better medical help.
B. Well-being can be recovered with short-term PGD therapy.
C. Reality acceptance of the loss is the main goal of curing PGD.
D. Recognition of PGD largely relies on patients’ self-awareness.

Artificial intelligence is contributing to significant advances in many academic and technical fields. Although
the application of AI tools can benefit science and society, it also creates risks.
AI slop – low-quality, inaccurate content from Generative AI like ChatGPT – floods scientific literature with
false data and misleading reasoning. AI review tools favour such slop. After ChatGP’s 2022 release, scientists lacking
oversight submit error-ridden papers. AI slop also appears in paper mills – companies mass-producing papers; in
2022 alone, 416 mill-produced articles were withdrawn. Though fake research existed before Generative AI, this new
technology has facilitated its expansion, driving a transition from individual bad actors to illegal businesses.
Unfortunately, professional journals continue to publish AI slop. This problem arises partially from novel
challenges specific to Generative AI, such as the difficulties involved in detecting AI slop; the complexities in
enforcing policies that require disclosure of AI assistance; and the increase in submissions arising from AI assistance.
The AI slop trend also results from long-standing failures in the review system. Even before Generative AI,
overstretched volunteer reviewers and editors lacked the time and resources to ensure high standards, allowing many
low-quality papers to pass. AI-generated and AI-assisted papers are pushing an already overstressed system to the
breaking point.
Even the very citations that provide continuity and prior evidence in scientific papers are being undermined by
Generative AI. Librarians have reported increasing requests for access to AI-generated citations that do not exist.
Many such citations have already entered the academic literature, contributing to the reduction of trust in science.
When researchers cite such slop, they pollute the academic world with unreliable or biased analyses, damaging
confidence in the entire scientific ecosystem.
What can we do to contain the AI slop in scientific research Researchers who use AI to conduct literature
searches should carefully check references for reliability. AI developers and companies bear some responsibility for
ensuring that these tools are trained on high-quality research papers and data. For example, scientific institutions can
pressure developers to fine-tune their AI models using the most reliable sources and to openly share the results of
their safety and accuracy tests with users. This is just the beginning of a long journey.
32. What effect does artificial intelligence have on scientific research
A. It transforms illegal businesses. B. It saves struggling paper mills.
C. It eliminates misleading reasoning. D. It boosts the production of false papers.
33. What can we learn about the academic review system
A. It is overburdened. B. It is underestimated.
C. It is rich in resources. D. It is efficient in checks.
34. What does the underlined word “undermined” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Inspected. B. Ignored. C. Weakened. D. Mixed.
35. What does the author imply in the last paragraph
A. AI slop should be tackled collectively.
B. AI companies should be fined severely.
C. AI tools can be trained on various data.
D. AI developers are the root cause of AI slop.

In an age focused on test scores and career success, aesthetic (审美的) education is often pushed to the margins
36 Learning to see, appreciate, and create beauty is central to becoming a whole, healthy person.
Aesthetic education trains our senses and sharpens our perception. It teaches us to notice color, light, pattern,
and harmony in nature, art, and daily life. 37 It improves our ability to observe, analyze, and understand the
world around us.
38 Studies show that looking at art or spending time in beautiful natural settings lowers anxiety and
improves mood. In a fast-paced, stressful society, aesthetic experience offers a much-needed pause. It helps us find
peace and balance amid chaos.
Beyond mental health, beauty shapes our moral character. When we experience beauty – whether in a sunset, a
symphony, or a poem – we often feel awe, gratitude, or wonder. These “self-transcendent” emotions lift us beyond
selfish concerns. 39
Aesthetic education also promotes creativity and originality. 40 It teaches us to think freely, take risks,
and express our unique voices. These qualities are essential not just for artists, but for all kinds of problem-solving
and innovation.
In short, to neglect aesthetic education is to neglect a part of what makes us human. Beauty develops our minds,
heals our emotions, and shapes our souls. A life without beauty is a life only half-lived.
A. Yet beauty is not just decoration.
B. Still, beauty is often seen as non-essential.
C. Beauty also calms our minds and reduces stress.
D. They encourage kindness, generosity, and care for others.
E. Besides improving mental health, beauty enriches our emotions.
F. This kind of careful seeing is not passive – it is an active mental skill.
G. Unlike subjects with fixed answers, art invites exploration and experimentation.

“All right, class, settle down!” my teacher, Ms. Garcia, announced. “Today, you are going to write about your
best friend in real life. I want specific details. Begin!”
I sat with my pencil over my paper. For a moment, I hesitated. I knew I didn’t really have someone like that.
Still, I lowered my head and began to write: My best friend is Hayley. She plays the cello (大提琴), like I do, and we
go to orchestra every Saturday. She makes people laugh, and whenever I feel nervous, she tells me, “You’ve got this,”
We’ve been best friends since fourth grade. I knew Hayley wasn’t real, but it was easier than explaining why I didn’t
have a best friend.
In fact, there was a girl in my orchestra class, Emily, who usually practiced the cello in the music room. Once,
she helped me adjust my bow hold after a rehearsal (排练) and gave me an encouraging smile. “You’ve got this,” she
said softly. I had also seen her patiently help another student work through a difficult passage, never showing the
slightest impatience. We didn’t talk much because I was too shy to start a conversation, but I couldn’t forget her
kindness. Without realizing it, I had borrowed pieces of her to create Hayley.
At school, I didn’t have real friends. My classmates were polite and kind, but I was just too hesitant and shy to
be the first to reach out. When I needed someone, I didn’t know who to turn to. When loneliness came over, I would
imagine someone like Emily beside me, her gentle voice offering encouragement. She was the friend I wished I could
have.
The next day, Ms. Garcia returned my essay with a bright red “A”. “Hayley sounds wonderful! I’ve signed you
and her up to perform a cello duo (二重奏) at next Friday’s Cultural Festival.” My heart skipped a beat. The lie I had
built for protection suddenly turned into a trap. I was totally at a loss.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150词左右;
Anxious, I decided to turn to Ms. Garcia.
The next day, I went to the music room to find Emily.

宾语是“his hair”,与动词“tie up”之间为被
主语“He”与“correct”
61. but 解析:此处为“not/never... but...”

完整形式为“Though/Although he is faced with doubts...
”,省略了“he is”。
Although

Anxious, I decided to turn to Ms. Garcia. I confessed shyly that I had made up Hayley because I was too timid
to make real friends. “But all the details sound so genuine!” Ms. Garcia said in disbelief. I couldn’t help but think of
Emily right away, the warm girl after whom Hayley was modeled. I plucked up my courage and told Ms. Garcia the
truth. Smiling gently, she advised me to invite Emily to perform the cello duo together and not to let shyness hold me
back. Torn between hesitation and courage, I finally decided to have a try.
The next day, I went to the music room to find Emily. As usual, she was practicing the cello by the window.
Gathering my courage, I walked up to her, though nervous enough to stumble over my words. Surprisingly, Emily
agreed to my invitation to perform at the Cultural Festival without hesitation. Her warm smile swept away my
nervousness. We rehearsed hard every day and finally delivered a perfect performance. Gradually, we became close
friends. Never had I expected that my fictional Hayley would turn into a real best friend. It was shyness conquered
and true friendship gained.
