The afternoon air was thick and warm, and by the time my dad and I reached the bay, which we called a swimming palace, my clothes were damp and itchy (痒) on my skin. Dad dived into a splash, heading out toward the edge of our narrow bay. Overwhelmed, suddenly, and with envy, I did what I hadn’t done in years: I held my breath and pulled my own head underwater.
There, suspended beneath the glimmering surface, I remembered it all — my love of diving, swimming, rivers and lakes. I knew what it was like again: to be free and fully present in my own skin.
Though I’ve always loved the water, I had spent seven years prior to that day staying away from moments like this one. I was afraid. Struggling for a long time with unhelpful treatments, and the pressures of teenage girls’ appearance, I had become entirely reliant on my makeup. I needed total control over how I looked, and going swimming meant washing this control away. My bare face and natural appearance were not something I identified with. I hated it, deeply, though I wished more than anything that I didn’t.
But those 10 minutes of contentment I floated within were fuel for the next chapter of my life. Suddenly, it didn’t matter how I did it. Whether through medication or mental attitude, I would find a way to have the kind of life that allowed me to dive into the water.
That day was the beginning of a slow but determined journey back to my own body — a slow unearthing of my deep self-consciousness. Life didn’t change in a heartbeat: I returned to the shore with all the same fears, but I clothed myself in a new determination to change things. I felt the tide turn.
Reflecting on this moment again today, it seems strange to think that going bare-faced on an empty beach was such a challenge. But this is exactly the perspective I had once dreamed of reaching. I do my best never to take for granted this freedom I have found. I will sink under the surface of the water, embracing that swell of fear and joy and liberation.
24.What can we learn from the first two paragraphs
A.My father’s action inspired me. B.I once suffered from memory loss.
C.My envy prevented me from diving. D.The bay was where I learned swimming.
25.The author avoided swimming for seven years because of ______ .

C.inconvenience of making up D.insecurity about appearance
26.How did the author feel after she returned from the diving
A.Hesitant and fearful. B.Restless but joyful.
C.Proud and contented. D.Afraid but resolute.
27.What message does the author want to convey in the passage
A.Do not judge a book by its cover. B.Self-acceptance is the greatest gift.
C.Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. D.Nothing is difficult to a willing heart.

It is not uncommon for people to say they have no sense of direction. The sense of direction represents the ability to find one’s way. In other words, it is about getting from point A to point B without a hitch. The journey begins with determining the initial position using landmarks in the environment. It’s really about choosing a route and following it. It is also a question of testing that this same route is the correct one, with the mental representation of space or the help of tools such as maps. Finally, the ability to identify the point of arrival is obviously very important.
In a study published in 2009, scientist Giuseppe Iaria, a scientist of the University of Calgary (Canada), who specialized in cognitive neural(认知神经) networks indicated that people lacking a sense of direction have a special condition: Developmental Topographical Disorientation(DTD).
The sense of direction required large neural networks for proper functioning, according to the expert. However, the fact is that a majority of people are unable to put a map in their head while on the move. In her book Mind in Motion(2019), Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Stanford University(USA)Barbara Tversky explains how most people do it.
She introduced a combination of methods. It’s a mix of turn-by-turn directions, bird’s-eye views and general information in the form of maps. However, it should be noted that most medium-complexity navigation(导航) directions depend in part on the ability of people to understand the perspective of a map. In other words, people without a sense of direction follow a route in pieces. Thus, they have no expanded understanding for space and navigate their environment without any mental map of their destinations.
However, there is a solution, namely to guide the person through a series of short routes.
28.What does the underlined phrase “without a hitch” in paragraph I mean
A.With ease. B.By oneself.
C.At ease. D.Without reflection.
29.What is the cause of going short of a sense of direction
A.Being unable to put a map at hand. B.Expanded understanding for space.
C.Lack of guiding through short routes. D.Neural networks’ improper functioning.
30.What could be a challenge for someone without a sense of direction
A.Reading a map. B.Forming a map in mind.
C.Following a route in pieces. D.Finishing a series of short routes.
31.What can be inferred from the text
A.Mental map contributes to the sense of direction.
B.Having no sense of direction is merely an excuse.
C.Most people have long routed in their mind.
D.People with a sense of direction don’t need a map.

King Shahryar, betrayed (背叛) by his wife, decides to marry a new woman each night and have her killed by morning to ensure he is never betrayed again. Scheherazade volunteers to marry the king. Each evening, she begins an engaging story but stops at dawn, leaving him eager for more. Night after night, she keeps him attracted with new tales, and over 1,001 nights, the king falls in love with her and abandons his cruel ways.
This ancient tale from One Thousand and One Nights highlights storytelling’s impact. Our recent research shows that strong storytelling skills can dramatically improve someone’s well-being.
At its core, storytelling helps people find meaning from life’s chaos. Studies show we shape our identities by turning experiences into personal stories. Skilled storytellers excel at two key skills: they need to connect events logically and they must learn to see the world through the eyes of their characters, understanding the “why” of what drives people. Applying these two skills to their own lives, skillful storytellers use the first to identify and pursue what gives their life meaning, while the second develops a mindset that prioritizes the “why” behind their actions over just the “how”.
To illustrate this point, we conducted studies with 800 participants. We measured storytelling ability through self-reports, friend evaluations and expert reviews on lab experiments where each participant told one story about himself and the other with three given random words. In addition to these assessments of storytelling skills, we asked participants questions to get a sense of how meaningful they found life and whether they approached decisions with a “why” mindset rather than a “how” mindset.
Results consistently linked storytelling skills to stronger life meaning and goal clarity. Personality also mattered: people open to new experiences collected more interesting life stories, while shy people used storytelling to balance out their limited social interaction.
A strong “why” mindset connects with reduced stress and extended life. Storytelling also builds social connections. By helping people express their purpose and build relationships, stories may indirectly strengthen both mental and physical health.
Storytelling workshops, now popular globally, may do more than teach communication they could help participants redefine their life’s direction.
32.Why does the author mention Scheherazade’s stories in the first paragraph
A.To show Scheherazade’s cleverness. B.To entertain readers with a classic tale.
C.To introduce the topic of storytelling. D.To compare ancient and modern stories.
33.What does the “why” mindset primarily focus on
A.Completing daily tasks efficiently. B.Avoiding stressful situations.
C.Memorizing random life events. D.Understanding life’s purpose.
34.What were participants asked to do in the lab experiment
A.Share personal interests in a group.
B.Tell a story with words provided.
C.Reflect on the “why” behind their actions.
D.Connect events into a meaningful story.
35.Which can be the best title for the text
A.Scheherazade’s Survival in an Ancient Tale
B.How People’s Storytelling Abilities Develop
C.Living a Meaningful Life through Storytelling
D.Why Shy People Attend Storytelling Workshops

Mary was the art teacher for primary school students. On this particular day, she was guiding them through the process of drawing a scenic landscape. Akila yawned(打哈欠), clearly disinterested - drawing wasn’t her thing. A small group of students gathered around Tina, laughing at her unusual drawing: a sun sporting sunglasses and trees topped with ice cream cones.
Mary instructed Tina firmly but with unease, “Draw it the way I showed you.” As the lesson continued, doubt crept into Mary’s mind. Had the joy of creativity been overshadowed by the pressure to fit in She scanned the room, observing her students’ faces – some concentrated, others uncertain. Akila’s disinterest was clear and Tina’s imaginative drawing had been met with ridicule instead of praise.
After class, Mary sat down with Tina, her tone softening, “Why did you draw the sun with sunglasses and the trees with ice creams ” she asked gently.
Tina’s eyes sparkled with a touch of rebellion (叛逆)-“I love ice cream, and I thought the sun would look cool with sunglasses. Why do we always have to draw like everyone else ”
Mary paused, her thoughts racing. Tina’s drawings weren’t just curious —they were a window into a world where imagination ruled, where rules could be bent into delightful chaos. Was she, by enforcing a rigid style, killing that very creativity
The next morning, Mary walked into the classroom with a renewed sense of purpose. She placed a large sheet of paper in front of the class and announced a new project: they would create a collective(集体的)artwork titled “Our Dream World” with no rules. They were free to use colors, shapes, and patterns however they wished.
At first, the students hesitated, unsure of this newfound freedom. Akila leaned back, skeptical of what seemed like another pointless exercise. But Tina, her creativity no longer restricted, eagerly grabbed her crayons and began to draw with abandon. Then, Maya joined in. And then Michael...

Text 10
This week on Hilarious Homes. (17) we’ll take a look at two houses. Our first story involves a couple. Their love of animals led them to buy a home alongside a forest in Clearwater, Florida.Don and Samantha Smith have lived in this house for 20 years. Most homeowners are used to seeing local animals, such as rabbits, deer, or perhaps a neighbor s dog. But in Florida, it’s normal to see 10 full-length snakes. In fact, the snakes have become more like pets. Although they are friendly to these ancient creatures, the Smiths are very aware of how dangerous these animals can be. Recently, their pet cat disappeared. (18)Our next story proves that one man’ s garbage is another man s treasure. Take a look at George and Helen Wilson s house in Halifax, Canada. Notice anything different That’s right. Their house is completely made of garbage and recycled materials. (19) It took only one month to build this house and it cost only $ 500. Amazingly, they got the idea from their daughter Rose, (20) whose 4th-grade science project was to build something out of stuff from around the house. Helen said about six months ago they were living at her mother-in-law’s, but now they have their own beautiful home. She also said she would never look at garbage the same again.

She noticed how Akila, initially disinterested, had quietly chosen vibrant colors and was now blending them together to create a swirling sky filled with fantastical creatures that flew over a stone castle. Meanwhile, Tina was enthusiastically adding playful details to her section of the paper-a whimsical garden where flowers wore hats and creatures rested on the ice cream-topped trees. Mary felt a wave of relief washed over her. The room was alive with chatter and laughter, as Akila and Tina frequently exchanged ideas and inspired one another. Akila even leaned over to admire Tina’s ice cream trees and said, “That is mind-blowing!” It was wonderful to see them cooperate, their initial differences melting away in the warmth of shared creativity.
