Shared mobility: Making travel easier for all
In many big cities in Europe and the US, it might seem like we’ve achieved cheap and easy mobility for everyone — just use your phone to find shared e-bikes and electric cars. But if you’re elderly, living in a low-income area or imagine without a smartphone or credit card, using these shared services becomes much more difficult. Here is a survey reporting barriers to using bike sharing.
Shared mobility could be a key part of a more sustainable transportation system. But to be most effective, it needs to include everyone. For-profit shared mobility providers have largely failed to deliver on this, but various initiatives and projects are finding creative solutions to reach underserved communities.

Massimo Bottura, a three-Michelin-Starred chef, has extended his culinary(烹饪的) empire globally. However, he says that the peak of all of his achievements is Milan’s Refettorio Ambrosiano and the following 12 global branches.
At Refettorio Ambrosiano, dinner guests are greeted by name. They dine on fine china at tables created by the country’s most sought-after furniture designers. The waiters are polite, and the chefs have been trained under the finest restaurateurs in the world. The set menu changes every day, depending on what comes in with the morning’s delivery.
This morning’s delivery contains dry arugula(芝麻菜), chicken close to its sell-by date and too-ugly-to-be-sold oranges. By dinner, however, the supermarket castoffs have been transformed into a three-course meal. The 100 or so diners — refugees, the homeless, and the unemployed — enjoy the meal with obvious pleasure, laughing with the volunteer waiters, praising the volunteer chefs, and forgetting, at least for an hour, the challenges of a life lived on the streets.
The brightest gems in Bottura’s culinary empire are not restaurants at all. He thinks of them as spaces that shine a light on the dignity of their guests while focusing attention on the food-waste problem by turning foods that were otherwise going to be headed toward rubbish bins into Michelin Guide-worthy meals.
Botura first thought of Refettorio Ambrosiano as a pop-up concept for the 2015 World Expo in Milan. The organizers had invited him to cook for the grand opening. Bottura proposed something different. He wanted to invite the world’s best chefs to cook with him for the city’s homeless,using leftovers. That idea soon got supported and turned into something more permanent.
Today, the Refettorio is “a movement,” Bottura says. “It is a model for fighting food waste and isolation on the front lines. And it starts by looking at an old carrot or a piece of hard bread and catching sight of gold.”

Many concepts that are central to the human experience are abstract, such as relationships, ideas, and time — things we can’t directly see or touch. We commonly use concrete language to talk and think about these things, often through metaphors.
Using metaphors is far more than a poetic device of factual statements. A study conducted at Purchase College found that metaphors can frame people’s perspectives, thus shaping their reasoning and subsequent actions. For example, describing the effort to stop climate change as a “war” rather than a “race” caused people to feel more urgency about reducing emissions.
Another example is the lightbulb metaphor commonly used to describe new ideas, suggesting that new thoughts appear suddenly like a light switch being turned on. However, this metaphor implies that new ideas come effortlessly and are accessible only to a select few geniuses, such as Isaac Newton, who supposedly developed his theory of gravity from a sudden insight about a falling apple. It may lead people to question their capability to generate new ideas, and as a behavioral consequence, people may underestimate the role of hard work and continuous learning in bringing about change.
An alternative way to describe ideas is by comparing new thoughts to seeds that fall on fertile ground and if cared for, will grow and develop over time. Different from the lightbulb metaphor, the seed metaphor implies an understanding that generating new ideas is a laborious process, which requires time and effort. It also suggests that anybody can be the cultivator of ideas as long as they put their mind to it.
The subtle effects of metaphors show how powerful language can be, even though we often don’t realize it. Who’d have thought a simple use of a lightbulb metaphor could profoundly affect how we understand the concept of innovation Given the nature of our metaphorical minds, it is worth asking: are our metaphors suitable We owe it to ourselves and others to use metaphors appropriately. By 2050, the United Nations says, we’re going to need 70 percent more food to feed the nine billion people living on Earth. Sara Menker says the problem may be even more urgent than the U.N. suggests. In 2017, she gave a TED talk in which she said a “tipping point,” beyond which global food markets become too overloaded to function effectively, could come in just a few years.
“We discovered that the world will be short 214×1012 calories by 2027,” she said. Or, in more familiar terms: “A single Big Mac has 563 calories. That means the world will be short 380 billion Big Macs in 2027. That is more Big Macs than McDonald’s has ever produced.”
Menker cannot change the world alone. But the firm she started, Gro Intelligence, is providing information that food companies, insurers, lenders and policymakers use to make food production more effective, and perhaps help protect against that tipping point.
Gro tracks 650×1012 data points daily — from sources such as government and local food reports, satellite photos, long-term weather forecasts and greenhouse gas measurements — and creates computer models so that food companies, such as Unilever and Yum! Brands, can know how prices are likely to trend, calculate surpluses (过剩) and shortages, and be more flexible when climate change makes food supplies harder to predict.
A type of artificial intelligence known as machine learning is key to dealing with the data because, as Allison Tepley of Gro’s staff put it, “The best information is often local information, but it’s often in local languages, in different forms and it all needs to be put together.”
Gro has sounded warmings on African swine fever in China (which cut pork production 30 percent in 2018), locust infestation in East Africa in 2020 and global inflation (通货膨胀) in food prices.
