AI and English Learning

AI and English Learning
In order to explore the impact of AI on English learning and exchange ideas about its advantages, our class held a discussion on the topic of “Artificial Intelligence (AI) and English Learning” last week.
Many students noted the potential benefits of AI, such as providing personalized learning and instant feedback. However, some also expressed concerns about the negative effects on traditional teaching methods and interpersonal communication. This was a thought-provoking discussion which inspired us to reflect on the role of AI in English learning and how we can strike a balance between technology and human communication.
Overall, this discussion highlighted the need for continued examination of AI’s role in English learning as we strive to create effective and engaging learning environments.

Dear Chris,
I’m glad to write to share a wonderful elective course about art and science. I choose the course related to music and acoustics.
It perfectly combines artistic appreciation with scientific knowledge. In class, we learn about sound vibration and resonance. We also adjust musical instruments scientifically and explore how materials affect tones. Different from traditional classes, it focuses on hands-on experiments and group exploration.
This course is truly rewarding. It enables me to discover the scientific secrets behind music. I realize art and science are closely connected. Meanwhile, it enriches my spare time and inspires my creative thinking.

你校英语社团要举办主题交流活动,本期话题为:“如果前往太空,你会携带什么物品?” 请你写一篇发言稿,内容包括:(1) 物品描述;(2) 说明理由。
【参考范文】
Hello, everyone!
If I could take one item into space, I would bring some small, carefully sealed tomato seeds. They are tiny, dry, and golden-brown, yet each holds the potential to grow into juicy and red tomatoes. Packed safely, they would carry profound meaning.
What makes seeds precious is that they symbolize life and hope. In the silent and empty environment, watching them take root and grow slowly would constantly remind me of Earth’s energy and the beauty of nature. Never would they fail to bring me warmth and courage when I felt lonely or helpless, as if I were holding a piece of my hometown tightly in the vast universe.
Thanks for your listening!

你校将以五一劳动节为主题举办英语征文比赛。请你结合以下名言,写一篇短文投稿,内容包括:(1) 你对该名言的理解;(2) 你的相关经历。
The most beautiful things in the world are created by labor, by the clever hands of people.
—Gorky
【参考范文】
From what Gorky said, I believe what Gorky says is especially true in our daily lives: the meals we cook, the gardens we nurture, the gifts we make—these are the most beautiful things, born from labor and wisdom of our hands.
I learned this lesson through a family cleaning with my parents. At first, I perceived it as a simple work, but I soon recognized that it was much bigger than I expected. Though sweat dripped down my forehead, a sense of achievement welled up in my heart when our house looked spotless.
This experience taught me that the most beautiful things are not always grand. What started as a simple task became a lesson I will carry with me for life.

Dear Alex,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to thank you for your mental health lesson last Friday, which was so interesting and meaningful. It helped me understand the importance of taking care of our mental well-being.
It was from your lesson that I learned it is normal to experience pressure in daily life. Thanks to your advice, such as sharing our feelings with friends and developing healthy habits, I now know how to deal with stress. I also enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere during the lesson, in which we felt encouraged and understood. For future classes like this one, I hope we can have more discussions so that everyone can share their practical ways to manage negative emotions.
Thank you again for the wonderful time! I can’t wait for your next class.

Dear Chris,
Glad to hear you’re participating in the World Earth Day poster design contest_!_________________________________

Li Hua
【参考范文 1】
Dear Chris,
Glad to hear you’re participating in the World Earth Day poster design contest!Between the two versions, I highly recommend the first one, “There is no Planet B”.
I prefer this design for two main reasons. Visually, the poster features a crying and sweating Earth, with factory chimneys emitting toxic smoke on its top. It vividly highlights the severe environmental crises we are facing, such as global warming and air pollution. More importantly, the slogan itself is brilliant. By cleverly playing on the phrase “Plan B”, it sends a powerful warning to the public: our planet is irreplaceable, and we have no backup home to escape to. Therefore, we must stop the destruction before it’s too late.
I believe this thought-provoking poster will surely leave a lasting impression on the judges.
Yours,
Li Hua
【参考范文 2】
Dear Chris,
Glad to hear you’re participating in the World Earth Day poster design contest! Both versions are fantastic, but I favor the second one, “OUR ACTIONS, OUR FUTURE”.
What makes this poster stand out is the perfect combination of its image and slogan. In terms of the image, it presents a hopeful scene where a pair of hands gently holds the Earth. On top of the globe, leafy trees and a bright sun vividly symbolize a green, sustainable future. Moreover, the slogan perfectly matches the drawing. Written entirely in bold capitals, the words create a strong impact, conveying a highly positive message that the destiny of our planet literally lies in our own hands.
I’m sure this inspiring design will shine in the contest and motivate more people to take concrete eco-friendly actions. Good luck!
Yours,
Li Hua

Dear Chris,
I’m writing to share with you my experience of shooting a short video on rural revitalization.
We arrived early in the morning and were immediately drawn to the peaceful beauty of the countryside. We filmed farmers working in the fields, elderly women weaving bamboo baskets, and children playing by a newly restored stream—all telling the story of a community on the rise. We also interviewed a young man who had returned to his hometown to start an organic farm. His passion and determination left a deep impression on all of us.
This experience taught me more than I expected. I realized that rural revitalization is not just about better infrastructure, but also about hope, tradition, and young people choosing to contribute to their hometowns. It also made me appreciate the simplicity and warmth of rural life. I’ve attached a photo from the shoot. Hope you like it!

Born in an ordinary village, he started as a motorcycle repair apprentice at 14. At 19, he chased a TV crew over 100 kilometers in the rain for a chance to pursue his dream. Despite many difficulties, he stuck to independent research and development of core technologies. In 2024, he founded his own brand (ZXMOTO). In 2026, his team won twice at the WSBK Portugal round, breaking the long-term monopoly of foreign brands.
His story shows us that with determination and love for the country, we can turn our dreams into reality.

Dear Jenny,
I hope you’re doing great. Last week, our class took part in a labor practice at a charming village, which now serves as our school’s official labor education and practice base. It was a truly eye-opening experience.
We helped local farmers harvest vegetables, clear weeds, and feed livestock. Though clumsy with the tools at first, the villagers guided us patiently. Sweaty and tired as we were, a sense of fulfillment filled us all. This hands-on practice taught me that no grain comes easy—every meal is earned through sweat. More importantly, I came to understand the dignity of labor and the joy of teamwork.
Have you ever had a similar experience in Australia I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Dear Tom,
Knowing you’re curious about the Grassland Music Festival our school held for us Senior 3 students last Friday night, I can’t wait to share this unforgettable evening with you!
As night fell, about 12 songs—ranging from uplifting pop to classic melodies—were performed by our school chorus and talented fellow students. The air was filled with music, laughter, and the scent of grass. We all sang along to a familiar tune, turning the whole field into a giant choir. Honestly, this festival meant so much more than just entertainment. For a few hours, the heavy academic pressure simply melted away. Standing there with my classmates, sharing smiles and singing our hearts out, I felt a deep sense of connection and release.
I truly appreciate how this event lifted our spirits and created lasting memories that we’ll treasure forever. I hope you get to experience something similar someday!

This morning, my American friend Allen and I paid a special visit to the Chinese Paper-cutting Show held in our city museum.
Upon our arrival at the museum, we caught sight of crowds of visitors. What impressed us was that various styles of paper cuts were on display, with typical works from different regions nationwide. To our satisfaction, the exhibits were skilful, creative and original. Unexpectedly, the visitors could practise paper cutting in person under artists’ guidance. So immersed in the show were we that we were reluctant to make a departure.
From this show we gained an in-depth understanding of the charm of Chinese paper cutting and the excellence of the traditional Chinese art.

Dear fellow students,
Currently, a campaign of garbage classification is being launched in our school, which aims to improve our study environment and educate the students on the urgency and necessity of waste sorting.
Given that most of the waste in our school and community usually ends up in the landfill, the campaign makes a lot sense. It helps to keep the trash where it belongs, thus reducing the amount of money spent on garbage services and even litter collection. Additionally, the students' habits of properly disposing of the garbage will be developed and such habits will be carried into their adult years.
Therefore, as students, we should take responsibility and start from “me” to get the waste sorted. I'm strongly convinced that only with everyone's contribution and participation can the campaign work wonders.

I am very delighted to know that you are interested in the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. If I can make just one recommendation to you, it will definitely be A Dream of Red Mansions.
Written by Cao Xueqin in the Qing Dynasty, it is an epic that describes the fall of a large wealthy family much like the author’s own. It also portrays the beauty of women from all angles and the love between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu. I am fascinated by the book because of its vivid language, attractive plot and the historical elements involved in it. In addition, it is of great value in understanding the Chinese traditional cuisine, medicine and architecture.
We can talk about it more after you finish reading it. Hope you will enjoy reading it.

你校英语社将举办题为 “Be Smart AI Users” 的征文活动。请你写一篇短文投稿,内容包括:(1) 简要介绍使用现状;(2) 提出使用建议。
【参考范文】
Be Smart AI Users
Artificial intelligence has become an essential part of our daily lives. From voice assistants like Siri to AI powered learning tools, many students rely on AI for information, homework help, and even creative writing.
While AI offers convenience and efficiency, over dependence can weaken critical thinking and creativity. To be smart AI users, we should first check information from reliable sources instead of blindly trusting AI answers. Second, we are supposed to use AI as a learning tool instead of allowing it to replace our own thinking and efforts. Finally, we ought to use AI ethically by avoiding copying and respecting privacy.
Only by making the best of AI’s advantages while maintaining independent thinking can we be smart AI users.

In Los Angeles, California, there was an aquarium called “Ocean Wonders Aquarium”, located along the scenic coastline. The aquarium was home to a wide variety of ocean creatures, attracting countless visitors who were amazed at the colorful tropical fish, slow-moving seahorses, graceful jellyfish, and intelligent dolphins. However, the aquarium had to go through a major restoration, and as of December 1st last year, it closed its doors to the public. The construction was expected to last until the summer, with the entire project taking more than six months to complete.
Without visitors, the aquarium grew extremely quiet and felt like an empty space. The animals, who were used to human interaction every day, now saw very few human faces, only the familiar caretakers. Something strange began to happen. The dolphins, once energetic and lively, seemed tired, lacking the usual enthusiasm they had for play.
One morning, after the caretaker Amanda threw small fish into the dolphin’s tank, the dolphins swam lazily to the tank walls and barely showed any interest in their favorite meals.
They stared blankly into the distance, their usual excitement absent. “Something’s not right,” Amanda whispered to herself.
Dr. Harris was called in to investigate. He examined the dolphins and initially suspected digestive issues. “Perhaps we should reduce their food intake,” he suggested. “Give them smaller amounts of food and see if that helps with any potential digestive discomfort.”
But after a few days, there was no improvement. The dolphins continued to suffer, showing no interest in food or play. Disappointed and worried, John, a senior caretaker, gathered the team. “What should we do ” he asked, his voice filled with concern.
Then, one of the caretakers posed an idea: “Could it be that the dolphins are lonely without the visitors ”
While everyone was doubtful, they decided to try something.
As the dolphins started to recover, the staff became more creative in their efforts.
【参考范文】
While everyone was doubtful, they decided to try something. They invited a group of volunteers to stand outside the dolphin’s tank, waving and clapping just like regular visitors. At first, the dolphins remained still. But as the volunteers cheered and tapped on the glass gently, the dolphins slowly turned their heads. Their eyes seemed to brighten. One of them let out a soft whistle and began swimming toward the wall. Within minutes, some dolphins were leaping and spinning as they used to do. Amanda smiled with tears in her eyes. “They just missed the crowd,” she said. “The lonely silence had been the real illness.”
As the dolphins started to recover, the staff became more creative in their efforts. They set up recorded sounds of laughing children and playing music near the tank. They also invited school groups for private previews, letting kids draw pictures and show them to the dolphins. Some caretakers even wore colorful hats and danced by the water. The dolphins responded with increasing energy, splashing and chirping happily. Dr. Harris realized that emotional connection mattered as much as physical health. The aquarium decided to keep some “visitor hours” even during construction. The dolphins were no longer just fed and checked—they were loved, and that made all the difference.

Li Jia, a senior high school student in Changsha, had always been deeply passionate about computer science and digital technology. She spent much of her spare time learning programming, online resources and technological innovations. One day, she read exciting news that the Central South Intelligent Computing Center, a landmark national big data project, was being built in her hometown. This super-large center, part of the national “East Data West Computation” strategy, would provide powerful computing support for scientific research, industrial upgrading and urban development. It would not only greatly promote the local digital economy but also take the lead in using green, low-carbon and energy-saving technologies to protect the environment.
Thrilled and inspired, Li Jia decided to do something meaningful. She formed a small team with her two like-minded classmates, Wang Wei and Chen Yu. All of them were interested in innovation and eager to make contributions to their hometown.
They decided to take part in the “Youth Innovation Proposal Competition” hosted by the computing center. Their creative plan was to design a practical mobile app that could help local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) make better and smarter use of the center’s super computing resources.
However, when they finished their first plan and gave a live presentation to the competition judges, they met cold doubt and strict questions. One experienced judge shook his head and said directly, “Your idea sounds creative and interesting, but it is too simple. How can three high-school students fully understand the difficulty and complexity of such a huge and professional computing center ”
Hearing these words, Li Jia and her whole team felt extremely upset, disappointed and disheartened. They walked out of the room with their heads down, not knowing what to do next.
Staring at the construction site of the computing center from afar, Li Jia clenched her fists.
A month later, they stood before the same panel of judges, presenting their revised proposal.

Staring at the construction site of the computing center from afar, Li Jia clenched her fists. She refused to give up easily or let their valuable dream die. That evening, she suggested they visit the center’s public exhibition hall and communicate with the engineers online. Wang Wei, skilled at data analysis, collected detailed information about resource allocation. Chen Yu, talented in design, optimized the app’s interface and functions. They buried themselves in researching, learning and improving day and night, fueled by strong passion and determination.
A month later, they stood before the same panel of judges, presenting their revised proposal. This time, they showed a complete prototype and explained how their app could connect to the center’s open system to meet SMEs’ real needs. They also used believable data to prove its efficiency and energy-saving advantages. The judges were greatly impressed by their efforts and courage. “Your persistence has turned a good idea into a wonderful project,” one judge praised. The three students smiled with joy, feeling that all their hard work had paid off.

During a stopover at Cairo Airport, a group of Chinese tour members faced an unexpected five-hour flight delay. The waiting hall was filled with tired and anxious passengers—some sat slumped in their seats rubbing sore necks, others wandered aimlessly with heavy steps. The long wait had worn everyone down.
But several middle-aged Chinese women, known fondly as “aunties”, decided to turn the waiting time into something meaningful. They loved dancing and traveling, and they had a secret weapon against fatigue: Baduanjin Qigong, an ancient Chinese wellness practice combining slow movements, breathing, and meditation.
One auntie, surnamed Chen, took the lead. Without any music, she began rubbing her hands to warm them up, and then gently pressed them to her face. A few fellow Chinese travelers joined in, following her slow, graceful motions. Then something unexpected happened—a foreign passenger named David, looking tired yet curious, stepped forward hesitantly. He stretched his stiff neck and began to follow the movements clumsily. Chen smiled and gave him simple instructions in broken English: “Breathe … slowly… arms up.”
To her surprise, after just a few minutes of practice, David’s tired expression softened into a relaxed smile. He stretched his arms and rolled his shoulders, and then gave Chen a big thumbs-up, saying, “My neck feels so much better! This is amazing!” His excitement caught the attention of other passengers nearby. Chen nodded encouragingly and gestured for them to join.
Gradually, more and more passengers were drawn to the group.
The flight was finally ready for boarding, but something had changed.

Gradually, more and more passengers were drawn to the group. A young mother stepped closer, interest written on her face. An elderly couple put down their heavy luggage and joined in. Soon, people of various ages and nationalities were stretching together, following Chen’s gentle instructions. Some chuckled as they swayed off balance; others shut their eyes, lost in the peaceful rhythm. David, now standing at the front, helped demonstrate the moves with growing confidence. The hall, once heavy with sighs and dullness, now filled with quiet laughter and shared energy.
The flight was finally ready for boarding, but something had changed. The departure hall, once thick with exhaustion, now glowed with easy smiles and friendly nods. David shook Chen’s hand warmly. “You turned our worst wait into a beautiful memory,” he said. Several other passengers echoed the gesture with cheerful thumbs-ups. Chen patted David’s arm gently and whispered, “Happy.” In that moment, the ancient Chinese practice became a quiet bridge across cultures. Strangers understood one another—not through words, but through shared breaths and simple stretches. That tired airport witnessed something unforgettable.

The Peterson family lived in an old brick house at the edge of the town. The house had been there for many years, and much of its interior was made of dry wood, which would catch fire easily. They had a cat named Whiskers, a quiet gray tabby who spent most of his days sleeping by the window. Mr. Peterson often joked that Whiskers was “the laziest cat in the neighborhood”.
One night, around two in the morning, a fire started in the kitchen. An old wire behind the fridge had been worn out for a long time. That night, it finally broke and sent out a small spark. The spark landed on a dish towel lying nearby. Soon the small flame grew bigger and began to spread. Thick, black smoke rose slowly to the ceiling and started to fill the kitchen.
Everyone in the house was fast asleep. Mr. and Mrs. Peterson were in their bedroom, tired after a long day of work. Their bedroom door was tightly shut, as it always was at night. Their two children were sleeping in the room next door, dreaming quietly. Unlike the parents’ door, the children’s door was left a little open—just enough for a cat to push through. The smoke alarm on the ceiling had been broken for months, but no one had remembered to fix it. So when the smoke rose, there was no sound to warn them.
But Whiskers noticed. He was not in the kitchen. He had been sleeping on the living room sofa, close to the hallway. The smell of smoke woke him up. His eyes opened wide. He lifted his head and smelled the air again. Something was wrong. He jumped down from the sofa and ran toward the kitchen. There he saw the growing fire and the smoke getting thicker. Without wasting a second, he turned around and ran quickly as he knew the family was in danger.
Whiskers scratched at the parents’ door and meowed loudly, but no one answered.
The next morning, with Whiskers in Mr. Peterson’s arms, the family stood outside watching the firefighters, all safe and sound.

Whiskers scratched at the parents’ door and meowed loudly, but no one answered. He knew he had to try something else. He turned and ran to the children’s room. Seeing the door was left a little open, he pushed it with his head and slipped inside. He jumped onto the bed and scratched at the boy’s arm while meowing sharply. The boy woke up and saw the smoke through the open door. “Dad! Mom! Fire!” he screamed, running to his parents’ room. This time, Mr. Peterson heard the cry. He opened the door, smelled the smoke, and quickly woke up his wife. The whole family rushed out of the house, with Whiskers leading the way.
The next morning, with Whiskers in Mr. Peterson’s arms, the family stood outside watching the firefighters, all safe and sound. Mr. Peterson looked down at the gray cat, his voice trembling as he whispered, “You saved us, little guy.” The children also gathered around, petting Whiskers gently. The kitchen was badly burned, and the house needed repair. But none of that mattered. Everyone was alive because of a cat they had once called lazy. That day, they fixed the smoke alarm and decided never to shut the bedroom door so tightly again. Whiskers was no longer just a pet—he was their hero.

I am a frequent interstate traveler. I was born in Ontario, Canada and thus all my family except my husband and children live there. So three times a year I make a trip north from Georgia to visit. I often travel by myself as my children are all grown and my husband is working.
Two years ago I went up to Ontario in the spring and brought one of my sisters south for a month to take away the pains of a long winter. This year I did the same. It is interesting that many of my friends have said “Aren’t you scared ” or “What if you break down ” I always respond that I have a lot of faith in the Lord and in myself. My husband is a mechanic and each year gives my 230,000+ miles car a good checkup. He will come for me if I need help.
Here is how my miracle happened on Interstate 85 North in South Carolina. Heading north to take my sweet sister of 63 home to Canada, we were chatting away and I was driving 70 miles per hour in the first lane over. Yes, the fastest lane. All of a sudden, I started to lose power. I said anxiously I was losing power and got over to the next and then the right lane. I was driving at about 40 miles per hour when I got to the first exit. I finally arrived at a Citgo station and pulled off the road.
I immediately called my husband and he didn’t answer. I was thinking he never answered his phone. I called 2 more times saying please answer the phone to myself. I was getting pretty upset thinking what I should do. I got out of the car and looked under it and smelled gas. Then I checked the oil and water. Luckily, both were good! My sister went into the gas station and said to the clerk if he knew anyone who could help us and then said a prayer for us as she made her way to the restroom.
I was standing by my car when a man with broken English suddenly appeared.
I thanked the man and asked him if I could pay him for his help.

I was standing by my car when a man with broken English suddenly appeared. I couldn’t understand him clearly because of his pronunciation, but I did know that he wanted to help me. After a moment of hesitation, I decided to accept his offer. He checked my car carefully and finally identified the problem. When my sister came back from the restroom, we waited beside him and offered help when asked. About an hour later, my car was fixed. Both my sister and I were grateful to the man.
I thanked the man and asked him if I could pay him for his help. He smiled gently and refused my proposal. He explained, in simple words, that his mother at my age had experienced a similar accident. When his mother was in need of help, a passer-by helped her out. So he regarded helping me as a return to all the kind people. When my husband called back later and knew all that I experienced, he was also moved. We agreed to pass on the kindness whenever and wherever it’s necessary.

I was standing by my car when a man with broken English suddenly appeared. He pointed at my car and made gestures, trying to ask what was wrong. I shook my head and showed him the gas smell, and he immediately knelt down to check the car carefully. He touched the engine gently, frowned slightly, and then took out a small tool from his pocket. My sister came back just then and stood quietly beside us, watching him work. About twenty minutes later, he stood up, smiled and nodded at us, indicating that the car was fixed. I was so relieved, not knowing how to express my gratitude.
I thanked the man and asked him if I could pay him for his help. He waved his hand firmly and shook his head, with a warm smile on his face. He used simple words and gestures to tell us that his mother once had a car breakdown on the road and was helped by a stranger. He just wanted to pass on the kindness. Before leaving, he gave us a thumbs-up and got into his own car. When my husband called back later, I told him everything. We both felt warm, knowing that kindness is never far away.

Zero waste is the latest trend among eco-friendly and sustainable living circles. Concerned individuals are taking a hard look at our wasteful habits, and finding creative and innovative ways to deal with the issue. Among them is a restaurant owner in India.
Minu Pauline owns a restaurant in Kochi, southern India. The 28-year-old restaurant owner was upset that her restaurant was throwing away a lot of food each day while many within the community were going hungry. Then she came up with an idea after watching a woman digging through the restaurant’s rubbish bags for food late one night.
“Just imagine being in the situation where you should be asleep but you feel too hungry and have to go out to find food,” she said. “It was very sad.” The experience was an eye-opener for Pauline. She realized just how much food we waste in society—including her own business, while so many people are going hungry. In response, she decided to place a refrigerator in front of her restaurant.
Once the refrigerator was in place, she encouraged customers to put whatever food they didn’t finish within. Pauline herself also put food in it. In addition, she wrote the date when the food was left in the refrigerator, so those who took it knew how long it had been there. The refrigerator was left unlocked 24 hours a day, and the food was available to anyone for free. Now the refrigerator feeds dozens of homeless people each day.
At first, some people were afraid the refrigerator would affect Pauline's business.
Better still, some children in the community also joined Pauline.

At first, some people were afraid the refrigerator would affect Pauline's business. Attracting homeless people to the front of her restaurant would prevent customers from coming, because they would feel uncomfortable with poorly dressed homeless people outside the restaurant. On the contrary, just the opposite happened and business was better than ever. People all praised her for her kindness and more and more customers came for dinner in support of what she did for the homeless. “I have so many smiling customers,” said Pauline. “I can feel the positivity in my restaurant.”
Better still, some children in the community also joined Pauline. Recently, Pauline noticed that two children were outside the fridge. “After they left, I went to see what they had been doing and in the fridge was some fresh food and candy that they had donated,” she said. “I’m so happy to see the message being spread to the next generation.” Indeed, Pauline has found not only a wonderful way to spread love and kindness, but also a creative way to combine reducing food waste with feeding the hungry.

Thirteen can be a challenging age. Not only did I have to adapt to my changing body, I also had to deal with my parents’ bitter divorce, a new family and the upsetting move from my country home to a crowded suburb.
When we moved, my beloved companion, a small brown pony, had to be sold. Feeling helpless and alone, I couldn’t eat or sleep, and I cried all of the time. I missed my family, my home and my pony. Finally, my father, realizing how much I missed my pony, purchased an old red horse for me at a local market.
My horse, Cowboy, was without a doubt the ugliest horse in the world. He was pigeon-toed and knock-kneed. But I didn’t care about his faults. I loved him beyond all reasons.
I joined a riding club and faced rude comments and mean snickers about Cowboy’s looks. I never let on how I felt, but deep down inside, my heart was breaking. The other members rode beautiful registered horses.
When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse is judged on appearance, we were quickly out of the game. I finally realized that my only chance to compete would be in the timed-speed events. I chose barrel racing, an event in which a horse and its rider attempt to complete a triangular pattern around three barrels in the fastest time.
One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons. Needless to say, she didn’t feel threatened when I competed against her at the next show. She didn’t need to. I came in next to last.
The bitter memory of Becky’s smirks made me determined to beat her. For the whole next month, I woke up early every day and rode Cowboy five miles to the arena. We practiced for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home. On the way home I would be so tired; those five miles seemed twice as long.
All of our hard work didn’t make me feel confident by the time the show came. I sat at the gate and sweated it out while I watched Becky and her horse charge through the pattern of barrels, finishing the course with ease.
My turn finally came.
No cheers filled the air when I finished my show.

My turn finally came. As I urged Cowboy forward, he stumbled, and almost fell, much to the delight of the other riders. I jammed my hat down on my head, stroked Cowboy’s big red neck and entered the arena. At the signal, we dashed toward the first barrel, quickly whipped around it and with perfect precision rounded the second and thundered on to the third. We tore around the final curve and shot for the finish line.
No cheers filled the air when I finished my show. The end of our run was met with surprised silence. With the sound of my heart pounding in my ears, I heard the announcer call our time. Cowboy and I had beaten Becky and her proud fancy horse! I gained much more than a blue ribbon that day. At thirteen, I realized that I’d always come out a winner if I wanted something badly enough to work for it. I can be the master of my own destiny.

Jenny had hearing problems when she was four years old. Several surgeries later, Jenny was found having a severe joint disease at seven. She could not put pressure on the back parts of her feet, so she walked on the tiptoe, and when the pain became unbearable, someone had to carry her. Once when she suddenly experienced sharp pain, her friends got her up and carried her from class to class.
All through grade school, and on into high school, Jenny suffered, yet never complained. She took her medicine and wrapped her feet in steaming towels until the pain eased. As soon as she could bear the pain Jenny immediately carried on, as though she was free of pain. She always wore a smile on her face and expressed her love for others.
Jenny had never been a cheerleader or competed in a sport. She could not even take part in a gym class, though she took the same health class four years in a row, through which she could pass with a substitute credit each year.
Jenny continued to have one surgery after another on her ears all through school. Her hearing improved and she taught herself to read lips. She also carried a pillow to school so that she could relieve the pain when she sat down. Gradually, Jenny began attending every football game, cheering the team on.
Then came her senior year. She saw documents about scholarships on the school website when visiting it one day. According to the statement, she would be considered for scholarships; however, school activities, especially sports, could often mean the difference between receiving an award and losing out. She continued to read other notices and found an ad from the football team, which stated that the football manager was seeking for an assistant, who would take on ancillary services like taking charge of the team’s supplies, communication and security.
Jenny decided to seize the chance.
When asked why the team did so well that year, a player spoke of Jenny.

Jenny decided to seize the chance. The football manager turned her down at first considering her health condition. But Jenny didn’t give up, promising that she would spare no effort to fulfill the duties. Impressed by her persistence, he finally gave in with the warning, “If you miss ONE game, you’re out!” Jenny nodded in excitement. Before each game, Jenny could be seen carrying big buckets of water to her teammates, with her pillow under the arm. She helped bandage knees, massaged backs and gave pep talks. It turned out to be one of the best years for the team in its history.
When asked why the team did so well that year, a player spoke of Jenny. “When we’re knocked down and can’t move, we look up and see Jenny, struggling across the field, dragging her buckets and carrying her pillow. It makes anything the rest of us suffer seem insignificant. We feel we have no excuse not to work hard,” he recalled. Finally, Jenny gained recognition and respect that she totally deserved, and she received a number of scholarships. Her favorite scholarship, however, was a small one from a sports club, because she thought it was of special and considerable significance to her.

I didn’t continue college after graduation and moved out of my family. With little work experience, I served as a waitress. But during the five years’ labor, I found myself burning calories running about only for a tip.
I had had enough so I moved to a smaller town hoping to pursue a college degree. I promised I would never serve people again—at least not in such a way. It was time to serve myself. Luckily, I received a position as an after-school program tutor at a local middle school, with the added benefit of completing English education degree. I had the opportunity to go big! The kids would need me—a role model and a trustworthy friend, I believed.
But my first day was welcomed by the students’ indifference. The desks were messy and the whole room smelled of dirty gym socks. My excitement began to die down. I doubted whether the new job was a mistake. The playground activity was deafening while homework time was not much better. After my repeated persistence, they finally turned off the playground mode. But just a few minutes passed when I noticed two kids quarreling in the corner.
I supposed it was another little incident but one kid named Jeremy bothered me. He shouted at me for coming at him. And when I asked them to return to their seats, he slammed his backpack and grew mad as I tried to urge him to take the right attitude. “I don’t like you, homework and this after-school program! All you guys do is yell at me. I’m never coming back.” he walked out of the classroom, slamming the door.
Naturally, I was so frustrated. I wondered why I was here. Most kids disrespected me! I paused to take a deep breath. Then suddenly I thought to myself, “You said you would never serve people again, but you don’t understand what these kids really need.” At that moment, I remembered my middle-school life. I always had a poor attitude, never did my schoolwork, repeatedly got into fights, and disrespected my elders.
Realizing I was not different, I walked out into the hall and caught up with Jeremy.
At that moment, my heart broke for this boy and his family life.

Realizing I was not different, I walked out into the hall and caught up with Jeremy. “I’m sorry, Jeremy. Could I have a talk with you ” I said, trying to be calm and sincere. He turned around, looked at me for a moment and nodded, “OK.” “Jeremy, could you tell me what have happened to you ” I asked. Hesitantly, Jeremy began to share his story with me. From what he said, I knew his mother was killed in a car accident three months ago. Worse still, his father, who was in deep sorrow, lost his job at the same time. After that, his father became bad-tempered and often shouted at him, ignoring all his requests. As he told me what was happening, he began to cry.
At that moment, my heart broke for this boy and his family life. I gently hugged him and patted him on the back. Then I walked him home and encouraged him to face life in a positive way. After that, I often chatted with Jeremy and helped him deal with his troubles. I even visited his father several times. As time went by, Jeremy behaved better and better and smiles often appeared on his face. At the end of the program, Jeremy hugged me tightly and thanked me again and again. At that moment, I suddenly realized what it meant to serve—get to know a person from the bottom of your heart and give what he needs.

Melati and Isabel deeply love their home on the island, surrounded by tropical rain forests, green fields, and a vast ocean. Enjoying a daily swim at their local beach was once a daily pleasure for them. But when Melati was fifteen, and Isabel just ten, the sisters started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters near their home. More often than not, plastic bags would be around them as they swam and some were scattered on the beach. They got really upset about that.
Melati didn’t think much about it until one day her teacher gave a lesson on some world heroes. Each of those people had sparked movements of positive changes in the world. They believed in the impact they could have and they did inspire more people to do something meaningful. After school, Melati walked home slowly in silence, concerned about the vast amount of plastic rubbish on the beach. The heroes crossed her mind. If they could do it, we could do it too, she thought. The idea lit her up. She couldn’t wait to share what she thought with Isabel and quickened her pace.
“So many plastic bags around! The beach is dirty and messy! It’s so terrible! We have lost the clean and beautiful beach. Can’t we do something to get it back ” Melati said heartily. Isabel felt a bit puzzled at what to do, but she also had a strong desire to do something. Picturing a beach as fascinating as before in mind, the pair jumped with joy.
They talked a lot, anxious to know how Dad and Mom would respond to their ideas. That night when the family sat by the dinner table, the sisters eagerly got their ideas across. While Mom and Dad listened to the girls carefully, their eyes shone. “How amazing that would be! We are so proud of you!” Dad exclaimed. Mom came up, gave them a thumbs-up and hugged the sisters.
Melati and Isabel decided to make a positive impact straight away.
One month later, Melati received a call from the local newspaper.

Melati and Isabel decided to make a positive impact straight away. They took advantage of their spare time to pick up rubbish on the beach. However, they soon realized that they couldn’t solve the problem on their own for there was so much plastic. After discussions and preparations, they started an organization to spread their ideas among the youth, involving more youths in the movement, which proved to be a hit. More and more teenagers took part. In a month, they altogether collected and recycled 2.5 tons of plastic, recovering the beautiful beach.
One month later, Melati received a call from the local newspaper. The two girls were invited to an interview in which they were asked what inspired them to start the organization, what the biggest challenges were and what advice they would have for young people who want to make changes in this world. They said a team is what keeps them going on the challenging days and added, “keeping our team engaged and motivated has been a challenge and we are happy to have a positive influence.”
