Nik was diagnosed with cancer in 2008 when he was 17.He died in 2012.But Nik’s kindness and generosity have lived on long after his death.
After he was diagnosed and started treatment,Nik was granted (给予) a wish experience from the Make-A-Wish Foundation.“For just this period of time,we didn’t think about cancer,” his mother Kelli Boehle said.“All we thought about was enjoying our time together.” In 2009,Nik met another young man Nate,who was also going through cancer treatment.He’d been diagnosed a month after turning 18,and Nik learnt he was too old to qualify for a wish.The night before Nik’s death,he asked his mother to help ensure that young adults fighting cancer could have their wishes come true too.
“It was like a seed he planted that just wouldn’t stop coming into my mind,” she said.In 2012,Kelli Boehle started Nik’s Wish.The nonprofit grants wishes to young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 who are battling cancer.Nate was the organisation’s first wish recipient.“It’s meant to bring them joy and know that they’re loved and that we’re fighting for them,too,” Kelli Boehle said.
Recently,19-year-old Jordan Morrow received her wish to attend a concert by her favourite singer as part of a trip to Los Angeles.For Morrow,who has spent the last year battling brain cancer,going to the concert has done more than lift her spirits.“I think it’s something to get me through whatever comes my way,” she said.“And I’m thankful for Nik’s Wish for that.”
In the 11 years following Nik’s death,up to 2023,the organisation has granted more than 300 wishes across more than 30 states.In the beginning,Kelli Boehle said she wasn’t sure she could be a wish maker and work closely with the young adults.But now,it’s her favourite thing to do.

Sensory-based food education given to 3-5-year-old children in the kindergarten increases their willingness to choose vegetables and fruit,according to a new study from the University of Eastern Finland.
The researchers used the sensory-based food education method Sapere,which makes use of children’s natural way of relying on all of the five senses when learning new things.In the Sapere method,children are given an active role around food,and they are encouraged to share their sensory experiences.For example,kindergartens can introduce different vegetables and fruit to children in hands-on sessions,they can involve children in baking and cooking,and they can offer children opportunities for growing their own vegetables in the kindergarten backyard.Food-related themes can also be included in books and games.
“There are several different ways to do this.However,it always starts from sensory-based learning and child engagement.Doing and experiencing things together is also an important aspect,” says Kaisa K hk nen,a researcher and nutritionist from the University of Eastern Finland.
The researchers compared children in different kindergarten groups.Some were offered sensory-based food education,while others weren’t.Children were offered a snack buffet containing different vegetables and fruit to choose from,and the researchers took photos of their plates to analyse their willingness to choose and eat these food items.
The findings show that sensory-based food education increased children’s willingness to choose vegetables and fruit,especially among children whose mothers have a lower educational background.On average,children of lower educated parents tend to eat less vegetables and fruit.This is how food education given in the kindergarten can help even out dietary gap between families.
“Another interesting finding is that the Sapere food education method also seems to improve the eating atmosphere in kindergarten groups.This encouraged children who were picky eaters to choose a more diverse selection of vegetables and fruit on their plate,” K hk nen explains.
Positive and personal food-related experiences gained in the kindergarten can help adjust dietary preferences in a direction that is beneficial for health.Dietary preferences learnt in early childhood often stick with a person all the way to adolescence and adulthood.

Modern technology has greatly increased efficiency,which makes life simpler for porcelain (瓷器) makers,but many Chinese craftsmen,who aren’t afraid of tough work and follow traditional ways,are restoring the charm of porcelain from days gone by.
Porcelain-making artist Gong Hua is among them.In 1992,Gong,in his 30s,had a wood-fired kiln (窑) built strictly to the letter of Ming Dynasty designs.Despite the kiln’s obvious drawbacks,such as the materials used in its construction not being as resistant to high temperatures as modern ones,it honours the production techniques and materials of Jingdezhen porcelain since the Song Dynasty.Over the years,Gong’s kiln has been used to create copies of porcelain works for many museums and collectors,to protect the originals.
In 1987,during the urban renewal of Jingdezhen,Gong saw porcelain shards (碎片) being unearthed at archaeological excavations (挖掘).They exposed him to the vast gap between modern porcelain craftsmanship and that of ancient times.“The glaze (釉) was as smooth as jade,and their beauty was indescribable,” he says.This set him off on a search for paints,materials and other elements to match historical standards.
In the early 1990s,he spent three years researching the craftsmanship of blue-and-white porcelain made during the Ming Dynasty.“I found that the blue and white colours were thanks to the rich trace metal elements in their raw materials,which came from the Middle East,” Gong says.Later,Gong studied hundreds of items of blue-and-white porcelain from ancient imperial kilns,and found that ancient people explored the use of local plants and eventually settled on ferns (蕨类),which grew abundantly around Jingdezhen and were the key to achieving the jade-like glaze.Unfortunately,they are ruined by modern electric and gas kiln equipment.
“Although they are hard to control precisely,only traditional wood-fired kilns can process the porcelain in an extraordinary way that may go beyond our imagination,” he says.

The researchers compared children in different kindergarten groups.Some were offered sensory-based food education,while others weren’t.Children were offered a snack buffet containing different vegetables and fruit to choose from,and the researchers took photos of their plates to analyse their willingness to choose and eat these food items.
The findings show that sensory-based food education increased children’s willingness to choose vegetables and fruit,especially among children whose mothers have a lower educational background.On average,children of lower educated parents tend to eat less vegetables and fruit.This is how food education given in the kindergarten can help even out dietary gap between families.
“Another interesting finding is that the Sapere food education method also seems to improve the eating atmosphere in kindergarten groups.This encouraged children who were picky eaters to choose a more diverse selection of vegetables and fruit on their plate,” K hk nen explains.
Positive and personal food-related experiences gained in the kindergarten can help adjust dietary preferences in a direction that is beneficial for health.Dietary preferences learnt in early childhood often stick with a person all the way to adolescence and adulthood.

Each 25-acre unit houses 50,000 residents on interconnected platforms,with potential expansion for 200,000 and buildings are capped at 90 metres tall for stability.“Structures must be flexible like bamboo in wind to resist waves,” explains architect Luca Curci.To achieve this, seawater resistant materials are given priority to,while hollow sections in platforms help them float.Meanwhile,movable bridges are constructed to link these “water neighbourhoods” to mainland transport systems.
The project team also envisions a mix of renewable energy sources extracting power from wind,water,and the sun to power the city.During extreme weather,platforms automatically separate and regroup using intelligence algorithms inspired by how fish schools avoid hunters.
