My friend and I recently took an art class together through our town’s community education programme. Our classmates were a mix of ages, stages of life, and experience with making art.We stood out in the class—not for our artistic talent, but for our consistent encouragement of ourselves, each other, and the group. It got me thinking how encouragement had become a routine.
It became something of a joke between the two of us to compliment (赞美) each other, give positive feedback when another student showed his or her work, and generally chat around the table about how fun our project was going. But reflecting back, our positiveness was anything but a joke.It was a bright spot in my week,a place where I knew I could be surrounded with kindness, gentleness, and positiveness.
Here’s the most special thing about it:My friend’s and my positive conversation wasn’t just encouraging,it was true.We didn’t go for cheap or false compliments like,“This painting should be in a museum!” Instead,we went for authentic (真实的) expressions of support and encouragement like,“I love how you did that cloud!”
Over time, the class became something of a sacred space, because we had made a habit of using encouraging, supportive language.Sentence-starters like,“I like” “I appreciate” “I want to try”,kept us present, positive, and honest.
The encouragement also kept us engaged in the work of making art.I feel sure that I learnt more—and practised more at home—because the activity was shown in such consistently positive terms, grounded in a growth mindset,self-acceptance,and encouragement.
Having a friend to share an encouragement habit is fantastic, but you can practise it on your own as pliment yourself in the mirror every morning.Keep a running “great work” list of things you are doing well today.Trust in your ability to find something loving—and true—to comment today and every day.

British humour has deep roots dating back to medieval times when jesters entertained royal courts with their witty antics.Over the centuries,it evolved from slapstick comedy to the satirical genius of writers like Jonathan Swift and Oscar Wilde. The British’s love for wordplay and absurdity found its voice in the works of Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear.

Noted for his profound description of life along the Chinese railways,Wang Fuchun passed away on March 13,2021,at the age of 78.His engaging photographs capture the substance of China’s ever-changing landscape.
Being artistic and good at painting and calligraphy,Wang found that photography bridged the two worlds: he could make art with his camera and increasingly he felt that his goal was not art,but life.
In the late 1970s,when he started taking his photographs, everyone on a railway platform looked reserved and orderly.By the late 1980s,a great rush to the cities had begun on the trains. He recorded young migrant workers shedding their shirts, running with sweat, seeking coolness on top of the seats. He did not ask anyone’s permission to take them, and he preferred to act secretly, like a thief in a way,as it captured the authentic moments of people’s lives—and so mirrored all the more clearly how China was changing.
His project was all-consuming.Over 40 years he estimated he had ridden on 1,000 trains and covered more than 100,000 kilometres,on every line in China. Each trip was neatly noted down in a notebook; he took about 200,000 pictures, and logged each by its place. From those pictures,he felt the migrants’ poverty too keenly, and he preferred to capture the hope that pushed people on to trains.
China was rushing to the modern world.Steam was fading; the green-skinned trains acquired fans and air-conditioning.Then came express trains, then high-speed rail. The aisles were clear, the windows sealed. However,in the reclining seats (躺椅座位),everyone reclined. In the ordinary seats, everyone’s noses were buried in their tablet computers and their phones.
He liked the message of hope; he was proud of what China had achieved. But how sad,he also thought that on that dashing train there was no mess,no collision of life and no good subjects for him,and that Chinese people should once again look so orderly, reserved and unconcerned about each other, even on a train.
( )1.How did Wang Fuchun reveal the changes in China with his camera
A.By creating art works on railway platforms.
B.By documenting migrant workers’ daily life.
C.By recording the transformation of life on the train.
D.By capturing a great rush to cities along the railway.
( )2.Why did Wang Fuchun prefer to take photographs secretly
A.To perform his duty.
B.To reflect reality better.
C.To avoid disturbing people.
D.To satisfy his curiosity.
( )3.What did Wang Fuchun find about the passengers on the modern train
A.They were only focused on themselves.
B.They were quite messy and disorganised.
C.They were interested in the reclining seats.
D.They were engaged in lively conversations.
( )4.Which of the following words can best describe Wang Fuchun
A.Friendly and considerate.
B.Devoted and observant.
C.Talented and humorous.
D.Optimistic and generous.

In the early years of televised news,Americans turned to the serious faces of newsmen as trusted sources for news of the important events in America and around the world, broadcast with controlled voices. The rise of comedy-news programmes raised concerns over the combination of entertainment and news. But could this combination actually help inform the public
A study from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania and the School of Communication at Ohio State University found that, when compared to non-humorous news clips (片段),viewers are not only more likely to share humorously presented news but are also more likely to remember the content from these clips.
“It is really important for young people to engage with news to be informed about public issues,” says senior author Emily Falk,Professor of Communication,Psychology, and Marketing at Annenberg.“We wanted to test whether humour might make news more socially related, and therefore encourage young people to remember it and share it.”
The researchers invited young adults (18—34 years old) to watch a variety of news clips, which they designed to vary,so that some ended with jokes and others did not.In addition to collecting data on participants’ brain activity using fMRI technology, the researchers did a memory test to find out how much information participants remembered after watching the clips. The researchers also asked participants to answer questions about how likely they would be to share the news clips with others.
Participants were more likely to remember information when it was presented in a humorous rather than non-humorous way and were more willing to share the information online.
“Our findings show that humour stimulates activity in brain regions, improves memory for news facts, and increases the desire to share information with others,” says lead author Jason Coronel,Assistant Professor of Communication at OSU.“This is very significant because entertainment-based media has become an important source of news, especially for young adults.”

D.Young adults are used to watching news clips on the Internet.
( )7.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about
A.How the study was carried out.
B.Why the study was different.

In a growing number of schools, educators believe that having students take part by starting with practical problems is a great motivator.Project-based learning that freely crosses disciplines provides an education superior to the traditional “maths at age nine, history at ten, literature at eleven” structure.Examples of projects applicable to the current situation are as follows:
Soil Superheroes Project King Middle School,Maine African Wildlife DNA Project High Tech High,California
Seventh graders learn about soil bacteria (细菌)by creating multimedia informational brochures. They consult professional microbiologists and cartoonists, conduct research, and then distribute their work to local garden centres and flower shops. An eleventh-grade biology class uses DNA analysis to help protect African wildlife.Students share their findings with wildlife-conservation officials and have even travelled to Tanzania to lead bushmeat-identification workshops.
Water Wheel Project Ferryway School,Massachusetts Bridge Project Kentucky Elementary School,Ohio
Fifth-graders explore history, science, technology, and engineering by designing their own waterwheels.By the time they visit the nearby Saugus Iron Works, which dates back to the 1640s,they’ve already tested and mastered the centuries-old technology. Students conduct surveys,do research, build models, and take field trips with the goal of determining the best kind of new bridge to build over the Ohio River. They don’t restrict themselves to one discipline but rather look into maths, literature, history, science—whatever is appropriate to the study.

Sometimes one plus one does equal three, as was the case when McNee, a basketball coach, met Mandekic. When Mandekic, a math teacher, told McNee how hard it was to get students excited about math at a gathering, he suggested, “Why not throw in something they enjoy, like sports ” “You are kidding!” Mandekic dismissed his idea at the moment.
The idea of mixing basketball and mathematics got its first shot two years later, when Mandekic and McNee, the current colleagues — who had launched a non-profit tutoring — were invited to run a summer-school programme for kids who’d failed Grade 9 math at Vanier School.
When the students showed up for their first day, they weren’t exactly thrilled. Over the next few hours, Mandekic and McNee gave the kids techniques to improve their shooting while also helping them calculate their field-goal percentage—which, in turn, taught them math knowledge. At the end of the game, the winning team was determined based on which group had the highest total percentage and had done the most efficient math. “When the bell rang, they were so focused on collecting their data and figuring out which team won that they didn’t leave,” says Mandekic. The classes, later named BallMatics, soon spread to other schools.
Later, McNee and Mandekic established a private school. At the school, kids with excellent basketball skills study all subjects, train at their sport and work part-time helping out with the BallMatics after-school programmes. For the school’s first graduates, the value of BallMatics is clear: all of the 16 boys landed university scholarships for their performance in the classroom, not on the court. “The school’s commitment to academics is the key reason for our success. The coaches would put students who didn’t keep up in class on the bench.” Abbott, one of them, says, “At the school, we were student athletes, after all, not athlete students.”
( )4.How did McNee’s suggestion sound to Mandekic at first
A.Confusing. B.Absurd.
C.Practical. D.Professional.
( )5.Why did other schools welcome the classes
A.They enhanced students’ concentration.
B.They improved students’ shooting techniques.
C.They helped students learn math unknowingly.
D.They guaranteed students’ show-up percentage.
( )6.What can be inferred from Abbott’s words
A.Students got balanced development.
B.The coaches cared little about students.
C.The school attracted more and more students.
D.He doubted the education idea of the school.
( )7.What is the best title for the text
A.Big Win B.Math Struggling

Research has shown that mindful eating has positive impacts on people,so it’s beneficial to know how to eat more mindfully. Here are some techniques for eating at a healthy pace.
Remove all distractions while you eat.1. Make sure your cell phone is facing down and you’re not going to be responding to any messages that come through.
Take enough time to finish your meal.Even with all distractions removed, very often you still find yourself eating faster than you should.2. It takes about that time for your body to get the signal to the brain that you are full.
3. You might wonder how to spend 20 whole minutes eating a sandwich. One way to slow down is to engage your senses and think through all the details about your meal.Ask yourself: What’s on my plate How hungry am I today Is it too salty Notice the smell, the taste and whatever other senses that arise as you eat.
Limit the amount of the food you might munch on (用力咀嚼) mindlessly.Put a small amount of snack food, like potato chips,in a separate bowl to help avoid mindless munching.4. Putting aside some of the food can help you eat less at a healthier pace.
Actually chew.If you’re wolfing down (狼吞虎咽) your food you’re probably not chewing it.And chewing is an important part of digestion.5. Look at each bite before putting it into your mouth, acknowledge what you’re eating and chew, chew, chew.

As young children went back to school across Sweden, many of their teachers were putting a new emphasis on printed books, quiet reading time and handwriting practice and devoting less time to tablet computers, independent online research and keyboarding skills.
The return to more traditional ways of learning is a response to experts’ doubt on the country’s over-digitalised approach to education, which has even introduced tablet computers into kindergartens. They are worried that it has already led to a decline in basic skills.
The rapid adoption of digital learning tools has also drawn concern from the United Nations’ education agency. The agency issued an urgent call for appropriate use of technology in education in a published report. The report urges countries to speed up Internet connections at schools, but at the same time warns that technology in education should be used in a way so that it never replaces in-person,teacher-led instruction and supports the shared objective of quality education for all.
However, online instruction is a hotly debated subject across Europe and other parts of the West.Germany has been famously slow in moving information of all kinds online, including education. Many students can complete their schooling without any kind of required digital instruction, such as coding. Most parents worry their children may not be able to compete in the job market with technologically better-trained young people from other countries.“If we don’t manage to make education digital, then we will no longer be a competitive country in 20 years,” said Sascha Lobo, one of the parents interviewed.
However, not all teachers are convinced that Sweden’s back-to-basics push is in the best interest for students.“Technology is just one part of a really complex network of factors in education,” said Catarina Branelius,a third grade teacher in the Swedish capital,Stockholm.“I use tablet computers in maths, but I don’t use tablet computers for writing text.Students under age 10 require time, practice, and exercise in handwriting...before you introduce them to write on a tablet computer.”
( )1.What did Sweden stress before this new school year
A.Printed books. B.Handwriting practice.
C.Quiet reading time. D.Independent online research.
( )2.Which can best describe the approach suggested by the United Nations’ education agency
A.Textbook-centred. B.Balanced.
C.Over-digitalised. D. Traditional.
( )3.What can be known from Paragraph 4
A.Students in Germany do not heavily rely on computers.
B.The German government is pushing for online instruction.
C.German parents are happy with their children’s education.
D.Teachers in Germany are ready to make education digital.
( )4.What is Catarina Branelius’s attitude to the new policy
A.Favourable. B.Unclear. C.Doubtful. D.Unconcerned.

Grammy (格莱美) Awards don’t only go to the people who produce and perform songs. In 2024,the award was presented to Annie Ray,a music teacher at a high school in Virginia, for her efforts to make music accessible to all students, particularly those with disabilities. However,in the award ceremony, she gave the credits to her students.
Inspired mostly by the diversity of the Annandale community including over 60 countries, Ray created an orchestra for students with severe intellectual and developmental disabilities. The orchestra is about much more than just making music.Ray says the programme gives students a chance to develop their collaboration skills, make mistakes and learn the art of refining something. And students teach her a lot in return—more than she could ever teach them.
She says her students completely changed her educational philosophy and approach of what it truly means to meet a student where they’re at and apply that elsewhere.“I believe they have a truly powerful message to share with everyone, and especially with how we look at approaching music education and what that looks like,” she added.
Ray says the success was especially meaningful because not many people understand what exactly music educators do in the classroom or how much their work matters. While her administration is supportive, another challenge is that her school “desperately” needs new instruments.Ray says she will use some of her grant money (奖金) to buy more.
Ray plans to put some of the money towards an ongoing scholarship for students who want to pursue music when they graduate. She knows of several who want to go into music education themselves, which she finds especially rewarding.
“It is a hard profession, but it’s one that is truly, deeply personal and satisfying,” Ray said. “And there’s nothing else like it.”
( )5.Why did Ray win a Grammy Award
A.Pioneering teaching philosophy. B.Great musical talent.

Inspired mostly by the diversity of the Annandale community including over 60 countries,
Ray created an orchestra for students with severe intellectual and developmental disabilities.
“It is a hard profession, but it’s one that is truly, deeply personal and satisfying,” Ray said.“And there’s nothing else like it.”

UNIT 4 HUMOUR

Ⅰ.阅读
A
My friend and I recently took an art class together through our town’s community education programme.
But reflecting back, our positiveness was anything but a joke.It was a bright spot in my week,a place where I knew I could be surrounded with kindness,
gentleness,and positiveness.

British humour is as diverse as a pub menu, but certain characteristics underpin its charm. The British have a habit for self-mockery,and the ability to laugh at oneself is a hallmark of British wit.Sarcasm and irony are close friends, and understatement often delivers the funniest punchlines.
Puns, wordplay and the absurd are common tools in the humour arsenal.Whether it’s making fun at the weather or revelling in the delights of innuendo(暗指),British humour is all about embracing the sudden twists and oddities of life.
British humour boasts a rich tradition of comedic brilliance, and one of its shining stars is P.G. Wodehouse.Within the literary realm,Wodehouse’s work, particularly the misadventures of Bertie Wooster and his unflappable valet Jeeves, showcases a brand of humour that has delighted readers for generations.
Visiting Britain Prepare to be pleasantly confused.British humour can be disarming,
especially if you are not used to the art of sarcasm and the subtlety of understatement. But it is all in good fun.Engage in friendly conversations with locals, try your hand at some humour and don’t be afraid to enjoy a healthy dose of irony. You might just find yourself laughing over a cup of coffee with newfound friends.

Researchers have developed a robotic sensor that combines artificial intelligence techniques to read Braille (盲文) at speeds roughly double that of most human readers. The research team, from the University of Cambridge, used machine learning algorithms (算法) to teach a robotic sensor to quickly slide over lines of Braille text.
The robotic sensor the researchers used has a camera in its “fingertip”,and reads by using a combination of the information from the camera and the sensors.“This is a hard problem for roboticists as there’s a lot of image processing that needs to be done to remove motion blur (模糊),which is time-consuming and energy-intensive,” said Parth Potdar from Cambridge’s Department of Engineering.
“There are existing robotic Braille readers, but they only read one letter at a time, which is not how humans read,” said Potdar.“Existing robotic Braille readers work in a static way: They touch one letter pattern, read it,pull up from the surface, move over, lower onto the next letter pattern, and so on.We want something that’s more realistic and far more efficient.”
The team developed machine learning algorithms so the robotic reader would be able to “deblur” the images before the sensor attempted to recognise the letters. They trained the algorithms on a set of sharp images of Braille with fake blur applied. After the algorithms had learnt to deblur the letters, they used a computer vision model to detect and classify each character.
Once the algorithms were incorporated, the researchers tested their reader by sliding it quickly along rows of Braille characters. The robotic Braille reader could read 315 words per minute with 87% accuracy, which is twice as fast and about as accurate as a human Braille reader.
“Braille reading speed is a great way to measure the dynamic performance of tactile (能触知的) sensing systems,so our findings could be applicable beyond Braille, for applications like detecting surface textures or slippage in robotic manipulation,” said Potdar.
In the future, the researchers are hoping to scale the technology to the size of a humanoid hand.

Listen carefully to a spoken conversation and you’ll notice that the speakers use a lot of such interjections(感叹词)—huh ,mm-hmm, um and the like—that don’t convey any information about the topic of the conversation itself. For many decades, linguists (语言学家) regarded such utterances as largely irrelevant noise. But recent research suggests they are essential tools for communication, helping regulate conversation flow and establish understanding between each other.
“Here is this phenomenon that is obvious but barely noticed.” says Mark Dingemanse, a linguist at Radboud University in the Netherlands. “The research turns out to upend our previous ideas about it.” He highlights that interjections serve as “traffic signals” for interaction. For example, an um or uh from the speaker signals that they’re about to pause, but aren’t finished speaking. A quick huh or what from the listener, on the other hand, can signal a failure of communication that the speaker needs to repair.
Interjections also serve as “continuers”, such as mm-hmm, which signals active listening and encourages the speaker to proceed. Because mm-hmm is made with a closed mouth, it’s clear that the signaler does not intend to speak.
“Continuers matter to a conversation,” says Dingemanse. In one classic experiment, 34 students listened as another volunteer told them a story. Some gave the usual “I’m listening” signals, while others—who had been instructed to count the number of words beginning with the letter t—were too distracted to do so. The lack of normal signals from the listeners led to stories that were less well crafted. “That shows that these little words are quite consequential,” says Dingemanse.
And interjections also provide a window into interpersonal relationships. “These little markers say so much about what you think.” says Dingemanse. For example, “Do you want to go out for dinner ” is an invitation, and “Oh, so now you want to go out for dinner ” implies disagreement, doubt or a teasing tone.
These little words go right to the heart of language and what it is for. “Language exists because we need to interact with one another,” says B rstell.

I used to tell my children that they were smart, because I was impressed by their rapid growth.I remember clearly watching my daughter figure out how to build a house that would stand up on its own,and thinking: Look at this tiny architectural genius.
But decades of research now suggests that we should not tell our children they’re “smart” when they do impressive things. When I first heard it,I felt instinctively irritated. But after I dug into the research,I was persuaded. It all goes back to something called “growth” mindset,a term developed and popularised by Carol Dweck,a professor of psychology at Stanford.Professor Dweck believes that we can change our abilities through effort and strategy. The alternative to a growth mindset is a “fixed” mindset—the idea that our abilities are inborn and can’t be changed. When we praise our children for being “smart”,based on victories like doing well on a test,we’re unwittingly (无意地) encouraging them to believe that if they do poorly or make mistakes, they’re not smart.
It’s not just what we say that matters, but how we tolerate our children’s failures.A 2016 study by Dweck showed that parents’ “failure mindsets” affect their children more than their views on intelligence. In other words,if parents think that failure is shameful, their children are more likely to be afraid of making mistakes. The study concludes that everyone is actually a mixture of fixed and growth mindsets, continually evolving with experience.Whatever we say or don’t say to our kids, the key is to get them more comfortable with failures big or small.
It’s helpful for kids to understand that you make mistakes and learn how they happen. When you chat with them, you can describe what you learnt,or how you strategised a solution.“You don’t have to deny you have negative emotional reactions,” Dweck said.“We,as a society, don’t do that enough because we feel embarrassed when we make mistakes.” But if we discuss our missteps more and explain how we overcame them, our children can learn to do the same.

Talking to your children about the misinformation they may find online is a great idea. Children don’t always have the judgment or critical thinking skills to test what they read or watch, but they’ll develop these abilities quickly if you help them figure out how to separate fact from fiction. We’re here to help you do just that!
Don’t wait for your kids to approach you with questions—instead, take a few minutes to sit down with them.Let them know that there’s a lot of content out there on the Internet, and not all of it is true. With everything going on in the world, remind your kids that they might be seeing a lot of confusing, false information going around on social media and other parts of the web.
It’s a good idea to turn news reports and TV shows into teachable moments.Look for small opportunities to start helpful conversations about misinformation with your kids.Take a TV show or a newspaper article and transform it into a helpful, easy way to understand what misinformation is,and how to avoid it.
Misinformation can be really upsetting and stressful for your kids to think about.Let them know that you’re always available to listen and answer their questions if they’re feeling confused. Reassure your kids that there are no stupid questions, and that you’re always willing to explain something for them.
Teach your kids a few tricks to fact-check misinformation online.Remind your kids to be on the lookout for strange-looking websites like those ending with co.Tell them to read through the headline. If it has a lot of mistakes,or if it’s written in all capital letters, there’s a good chance that it might be misinformation.Additionally, introduce your kids to official websites, which are quick and easy ways to fact-check information.
