Learning new languages can be empowering, opening doors to connect with people from different cultures. Recently, a man practicing Chinese gained widespread attention after visiting a local Lanzhou noodle restaurant and speaking the language in a truly memorable way. Canadian resident Cali Lopez shared a video of his interaction with a Chinese waitress and their authentic and curious exchange quickly won praise online.
The incident occurred in Saskatoon, one of Canada's largest cities, with a growing Chinese community. Cali appeared anxious and nervous at the Lanzhou noodle restaurant before a waitress approached him. Greeting her in her native language, he nearly left her in shock.
With a smile, Cali then politely asked the waitress if he could practice his Chinese and began ordering in her language, asking questions about the menu. He noticed a dish that caught his interest and asked in Chinese, “Is this sour pickle (泡菜)soup hot?” The waitress replied, “Yes, a little bit spicy.” Cali, who works as an English teacher, was fine with mild spice, replying,“Oh, I just want to order one.” When she asked about his other food preferences, he shared his desire for a dish with rice noodles.
The waitress then listed the restaurant's six types of noodles, including three round and three flat varieties. Cali appeared to struggle a bit while discussing the types of noodles in Chinese, requesting the waitress to point to the menu and explain each dish's preparation to help him order. After some thought, he chose the thinnest of the round noodles.
Curious about his language skills,Cali then asked,“Can you understand me?” and waited eagerly for her response. The waitress confirmed she could, leaving Cali visibly moved.
The one-minute video of this genuine and heartfelt exchange has received widespread praise on social media for recording a real, spontaneous (自发的)moment without any forced emotion.

When asked how he “chooses” words for a translation, Damion Searls, a famous translator, likens (比作)it to asking a reader how they “choose” what Mr Darcy, the main character in the novel Pride and Prejudice, looks like when reading it. Neither is so much a choice, he says, but a response shaped by the text.
Translating is some kind of reading and some kind of writing joined together. If you unpack what reading is, you're going to get most of the way to the philosophy of translation. According to Searls, translation isn't that different from other forms of writing in English. However, what distinguishes translation is the way translators read, a close reading that engages deeply with a language's structure.
When “reading like a translator,” Searls said he must identify which linguistic elements can be omitted (省略)in English and which are intentional stylistic choices by the author. When translating Uwe Johnson's novel, Anniversaries, for example, he noticed frequent “not this but that” constructions (“the train leaves at not 7:00 but 6:00”),which are more common in German than in English.
While it would be easy to rephrase for smoother English, he realized Johnson used this pattern deliberately to express a personal vision. “We can't just erase it because it's not just the German language: It's him, the author,” Searls said.
Searls also described his process when approaching a new translation. He usually does a slow and precise first draft, which allows him to revise later without referring too much to the source material. “As much as you can avoid looking back at the original will help you direct your attention to: Does this sound like it should sound in English?”
When asked how to reach the point of feeling like a reader skilled enough to translate, Searls responded that while some believe mastering the source language is necessary for translation, he sees more nuance (细微差异). Though he knows Norwegian well enough to translate the works of Jon Fosse, he wouldn't necessarily feel comfortable translating just any Norwegian book.

Of course, looking up every word in a sentence is no fun. Letting go of the __10__—embracing the fact that I didn't understand every word—helped me __11__ more ground, allowing me to see phrases and vocabulary over and over in hundreds of __12__, however imperfect. And I became __13__ in the stories; I grew __14__ of the characters and wanted to know what happened next.

(2025·湖北部分重点中学联考)
Many concepts that are central to the human experience are abstract, such as relationships, ideas, and time—things we can't directly see or touch. We commonly use concrete language to talk and think about these things, often through metaphors.
Using metaphors is far more than a poetic device of factual statements.A study conducted at Purchase College found that metaphors can frame people's perspectives, thus shaping their reasoning and subsequent actions. For example, describing the effort to stop climate change as a “war” rather than a “race” caused people to feel more urgency about reducing emissions.
Another example is the light bulb metaphor commonly used to describe new ideas, suggesting that new thoughts appear suddenly like a light switch being turned on.However, this metaphor implies that new ideas come effortlessly and are accessible only to a select few geniuses, such as Isaac Newton, who supposedly developed his theory of gravity from a sudden insight about a falling apple. It may lead people to question their capability to generate new ideas, and as a behavioral consequence, people may underestimate the role of hard work and continuous learning in bringing about change.
An alternative way to describe ideas is by comparing new thoughts to seeds that fall on fertile ground and if cared for, will grow and develop over time.Different from the light bulb metaphor, the seed metaphor implies an understanding that generating new ideas is a laborious process, which requires time and effort. It also suggests that anybody can be the cultivator of ideas as long as they put their mind to it.
The subtle effects of metaphors show how powerful language can be, even though we often don't realize it.Who'd have thought a simple use of a light bulb metaphor could profoundly affect how we understand the concept of innovation Given the nature of our metaphorical minds, it is worth asking:Are our metaphors suitable We owe it to ourselves and others to use metaphors appropriately. These choices, conscious or not, can be constructive or destructive.

I'm in a meeting when my phone starts to flash with notifications. While the meeting is important, I'm distracted and want to pick up the phone to find out more. Is it a new job announcement from a friend Something terrible has happened Every second I'm not sending a message, I'm being a bad friend. I become anxious, and I'm praying the meeting ends sooner.
It is the emotional roller-coaster ride of being a modern group chat member, and I'm not alone in these feelings. Research conducted by Three found 50% of British adults struggle to keep up with the speed of these virtual conversations and feel pressured. But why exactly does this occur
“When I'm busy and see a ton of messages coming through, I get stressed that I'm missing something big,” says Jasmine, 31. “Not participating in a group chat can also be overwhelming because then you've got loads to catch up on and it's turned from reading just one or two messages to a short story.”
Besides being overwhelming, there's a lack of real connection, too. “Group chats can make us feel like we're surrounded by people, yet still somehow on the outside,” says psychotherapist Abby Rawlinson. “If everyone is chatting and you're not part of the flow—or your message gets no replies—it can awaken the quiet ache of invisibility.”
For Madhura, 31, this has felt particularly exasperating at times. “I find messaging in group chats can make you feel like you're not quite on the same page. Group chats can turn friendly jokes into hurtful messages. A group chat may be used to gossip about a friend who's not there. Leaving a group chat can also feel like you're creating an opportunity for those who are left to gossip about you,” Madhura says.
“Texting is such a ‘thin’ form of communication. In person, you have tone of voice, facial expressions, and eye contact—all the rich human signals that help us interpret meaning. On a screen, you just get the words themselves,” Rawlinson explains. “So don't fall into a pit of self-criticism when a message goes without a reply. Group chats can't truly measure your friendships. They're just a tool to stay connected.”

6.What mainly troubles Jasmine about group chats?( B )
A.Privacy concerns.
B.Information overload.

D.Fear of misunderstanding.
解析:细节理解题。根据第三段的内容可知,Jasmine关于群聊的主要困扰是信息过载。故选B。

8.What does Rawlinson suggest people do?( C )
A.Reduce group chat usage.
B.Learn new communication skills.

(2026·江苏苏州八校联考)
